🇹🇭 Thailand Travel Planning Tips: What to Pack, Protect & Prepare

Thailand is a tropical dream — bustling cities, serene temples, island beaches, and jungle retreats. But before you zip up your suitcase, it’s worth planning for more than just what to wear. Here’s how to prep smartly for your Thai adventure while maximizing comfort, coverage, and savings.

1. Secure the Right Travel Insurance

Don’t leave home without it — the best travel insurance for trips to Thailand and Asia can protect you against everything from delayed flights to emergency evacuations. For broader coverage, look into plans categorized under the best travel insurance for Southeast Asia that include multiple stops or longer stays.

2. Don’t Forget Health Coverage

Healthcare in Thailand is affordable, but it’s still essential to have health insurance coverage for Thailand travel, especially if you’ll be doing more adventurous activities like island-hopping, hiking, or riding scooters. Check if your travel policy includes hospital visits, prescriptions, and COVID-related coverage.

3. Pack Light, Dress Smart

Thailand’s humidity calls for breezy clothing — think lightweight resort wear for tropical destinations. Flowy maxi dresses, cotton sets, breathable jumpsuits, and linen shirts are your best friends. Don’t forget a sunhat and slip-on sandals for beach days or temple visits.

4. Use the Right Card to Pay

Avoid sneaky fees by using travel credit cards with no foreign transaction fees. Many top-rated travel cards also offer perks like hotel discounts, travel insurance, and cashback on international purchases — perfect for shopping local markets or booking Thai massages.

5. Stay Connected the Smart Way

Whether you’re navigating Bangkok or looking for a beach café in Phuket, having data is key. Look for travel SIM cards with cashback offers, which often come with unlimited data packages and can be purchased in advance or on arrival.

THINGS TO DO IN PHUKET FOR COUPLES PERFECT FOR A HONEYMOON

Whether you are looking for a chilled romantic holiday in Phuket or one filled with adventure, Phuket offers the best of both worlds to fulfill interest for pretty much everyone.

If you love relaxation while your partner likes diving or kayaking, you can both do your own thing and then meet up for other outings to temples, markets, food experiences like cooking classes and spa treatments for couples.

There are so many experiences not to be missed on any Phuket itinerary. There are also plenty of tours in Phuket to keep you entertained for part or all your holiday.

  1. TAKE A TRIP TO KATA NOI BEACH

Looking for the best beaches in Phuket for couples, look no further than Kata Noi Beach. The scenery at this beach is overwhelming and breathe taking. You can be certain your spouse would not want to leave the serenity of this heavenly beach soon. Phuket is among the most beautiful places in Thailand and the beaches alone prove that.

Relax at the beach and let the cool breeze blow away your worry, take a romantic walk along the beautiful sands while holding the hands of each other or maybe go for a swim together in the clear blue water. Perfect your beach outing, with a quick romantic dinner by the beach, eat delicious Thai meals served by restaurants close to the bay, and savor the passion and love that transcend the atmosphere.

  1. SEE THE BIG BUDDHA

There is no doubt that this iconic and magnificent work of art is the most visited place and the most famous structure in the city of Phuket, aside from its many beaches. The big Buddha statue is huge and gigantic, as it over look Phuket.

It’s a great place for couples to take advantage of the panoramic view and the lovely scenery and take those beautiful and memorable pictures, with the statue in the background. The huge statue is 25 meters wide and stands at 45 meters tall, it is highly adorned with a Burmese jade marble work. There is a little Buddhist monastery beside the statue, take your partner in and offer a little prayer. There are tours for Phuket city tour with Karon View Point, Big Buddha and Was Chalong that you can do to get the best spots done in one afternoon.

  1. TRIP TO PHANG NGA BAY;

Also famously called the James Bond island, this island off Phuket is a major tourist attraction and it was further made famous when James bond came to act some 007 movie scenes there (the man with the golden gun). Hang Nga Bay is a wonder of nature to say the least, it sure promises to be a thrilling sight for you and your spouse. Lots of tourist swarm to the bay to feast their gaze on the rocky mountain, standing upside down in the middle of the water. With its sharp narrow end inside the water, as if the rock is upside down. The atmosphere around the bay is electrifying, shake off the cold with a warm embrace from your lover, as you join other visitors to marvel at the wonder of mother-nature.

The best way to get up close to Phang Nga Bay is to book a boat tour from the ferry points in Phuket, or you take the faster option, the speed boat cruise.

Phuket Travel Tip And Tips For Getting Around The Phuket

  • While using ATM in Phuket, remember that money comes first followed by the ejection of the card. Do not forget to collect your card in the hurry.
  • The credit cards are accepted in malls and restaurants. But for local expenses like taxis & bazaar, you will need local currency.

  • Booking a hotel in advance in the Phuket is often cheaper. You must choose your lodging at a point which is nearer to your planned visit spots. Patong (crowded) and Mai Khao Beach (quite) are two of the recommendations.
  • While moving around the Phuket, renting a car or bike is a much cheaper option. Read a local drive guide to avoid unnecessary accidents. Always make sure you have travel insurance coverage for your activities.

  • Suntans and Sunburns are quite common in the bright daylight of the Phuket. Always fancy sticking up some sunblocks to protect your skin.
  • Taxis are the a cheap transportation option but they turn on the meter. They will overcharge you as per their choice. Keep an eye on the meters, particularly if you are trying to do Phuket on a budget.

  • Tuk Tuks are a fair choice but ask for the price before starting the journey. It is not safe to ride on it by night. They are convenient and everywhere.
  • Water change often causes stomach upsets so stick to bottled water and ease into tap water slowly especially if staying in Phuket for a long period. Otherwise, stick bottled drinking water. Tap water is not recommended. However, ice is safe as they use filtered drinking water.

  • The temperature in Phuket is warm all around the year. It varies from WARM to TOO HOT. The best time to visit it is from December to March. September to October occupies the rainy season. April and May should be avoided as they are the hottest months.

  • Phuket Safety – Overall we felt pretty safe exploring Thailand and Phuket in general. In the markets, you just have to be wary of people trying to pull scams. Most of these tend to be somewhat obvious but just keep that in mind and some common sense and you will be fine. If you are worried, an added precaution is taking with you an anti-theft backpack too.

  • You can travel there by Taxi which will charge you nearly 800 Baht. One option is to travel by shared minibus which costs around 600 Baht for 2 people.
  • Bus Schedule is quite fixed and is often reliable. Buses and vans can be spotted with orange “AirPort Bus” logo. The bus charges 90 Baht and takes 1:40 hours to drop you to the town. Best Time To Go To Phuket On Holiday

Just like my home country Phuket, mainly has two seasons. The dry season and the wet season. The dry season starts from December to April.

The monsoon season is from May to October. The other in between are wet seasons before the monsoon really kicks in. The beauty of Phuket weather is that the temperatures even during the wet season remain consistent.

So what is the best time(month) to go to Phuket? The best time to visit Phuket is between November to February. We visited Phuket in December and the weather was perfect!

November – February – The weather is cool with manageable warmth perfect for sunbathing and exploring. Temperature is in the mid-20s but usually under 30°C. This is the busiest time in Phuket with most visitors to Phuket visiting during this time. Not surprising as this is this period offers the best weather to visit Phuket.

March – May – The weather is mostly hot but by end of may you are starting to see the start of the wet season. This is the hottest time in Phuket. Temperatures between March and Mary are in the 30s.

May – October – This is the wet season and monsoon season. Expect plenty of rain. There are some gaps in the rain with the temperature still above 25°C.

Where To Stay In Phuket

Regardless of budget, Phuket has something for everyone. As we were in Phuket for some time I managed to sample budget accommodation at Gold Diggers Resort, a mid-range priced hotels at Ikon Hotel and Luxury at Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa where we had our very own pool villa with stunning private beaches just meters from our villa.

I have linked to my post on all these places. Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa is located on the beautiful Mai Khao beach, perfect for those looking for a relaxing experience. Its also only 15 minutes from the airport.

I loved strolling on the beach at sunrise. This was my favourite place during our visit. There are a variety of accommodation options including Oceanfront Pool suites with their own private 18-square meter infinity pools.

For more on where to stay in Phuket, I have shared a guide on the best areas to stay in Phuket with details of the hotels in each of the beaches in Phuket.

But, let face it, no trip to Thailand is complete without seeing Bangkok. Let us start the 3 week trip in Thailand with the very happening Bangkok scene in the first week of your 3 week Thailand trip.

Also, make sure you read up on things to know about Thailand before visiting.

Day 1

No 3-week tour of Thailand is complete without checking out Bangkok. The first day of exploring Bangkok, you can start with a visit to the Grand Palace.

The buildings and structures for diverse purposes and of differing styles, reflecting the changing architecture during the various reigns of the kings. Despite this, most of the buildings within adhere strictly to classical Thai architecture.

The Grand Palace is a must-visit spot on any 3 week trip to Thailand. It is located on the Na Phra Lan Road and is quite accessible.

Visitors will be able to view the war memorabilia of Thailand and the ornamental decor and items in use by the royalty. In the same complex, you will be able to come across the gorgeous Wat Phra Kaew Temple or the Emerald Buddha temple.

After this trip, you can go to Dusit Palace. The opulence of this white monument is just un-mistaken. The Dusit Palace was commissioned to be constructed by King Rama V after he returned from Europe.

Hence, the architectural style of this white marble palace spells European artistry everywhere.

The palace is open to the visitors from 9.30 am, and in order to get the tickets, you can consult the Grand Palace ticket office.

After these two grand palace visits, you can hop into one of the popular hangouts in the city center. For sunset, be ready to visit the Chao Phraya River coast and take in the breath-taking charm of the Wat Arun temple.

The temple with all the lights up twinkles in the dusk skyline and reflects magically on the waters of Chao Phraya river. A river cruise ride with dining is one of the must-dos on your visit in the city.

Day 2

The next day, you can begin on a more spiritual note with the visit to the Wat Arun temple early in the morning during sunrise.

Thousands of tourists and devout folk’s throng the Temple of Dawn and watch the marvelous temple at its morning glory

. The gilded spires and the 70-Meter high spire studded with stained glass decor add to the charm and beauty at any time of the day. It is necessary to dress modestly while visiting the temples.

Just on taking a boat from the Thien pier, you can reach another monument that will spell-bind you this trip to Bangkok.

The Wat Pho temple is a majestic temple, which is famous for its 46-meter long Reclining Buddha. The temple is located on the Sanamchai Road, and it is sure to offer you serenity like no other.

Next, on the trip, you can visit the Safari World or Ocean World depending upon your preference. These two places are worth your time and every minute you spend there, will be a great stress-buster.

Bangkok comes alive at the night, and this is not something that you were not aware. Thai massage parlors on one side, the risqué nightclubs all give a new lease of life to those who come to Bangkok for the same.

The Sukhumvit Road, the bars at Siam, Silom, and Thonburi are all going to bring out the party animal in you. There are rooftop bars hosting classic and absolutely stunning parties that you can never get tired of.

The last day can start with a trip to the Dreamland amusement park, or heading of the Old Town for some exploration on foot.

The Old Town has European architecture all around and has stores and markets aplenty to shop from.

If you feel that you have not had your fill of shopping, heading off to the Floating Market, or the bustling Chinatown is a great option.

Day 3: Travel To Chiang Mai

For the next three days, you can spend in Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is a mountainous city located on the north of Thailand, and it will be a great diversity to discover here in terms of terrain.

The city has a great historical and cultural heritage with art and architectural evidence in the form of temples and ruins from the 14th century still existing there.

The first-day trip to Chiang Mai can be a visit in the Doi Suthep area. This is a mountainous area covering dense forests and waterfalls, growing across the ranges of high mountains.

Trekking through these forests with a guide and reaching the top for a stunning view is a great way to relax.

Other than that, a visit to the temple of Doi Suthep to visit the jaw-dropping beautiful architecture of the temple is something that you can think about later.

This trip will take a long time and so if after that, you still have the energy for more exploration or spending time close to nature, a visit to the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary can be on the list.

The ticketing office is located on the Tha Phae Road, and the trip will involve a safari through the jungle where you can spot rescued or orphan elephants in the wild.

There are various other such elephant camps as Patara, Mae Phing, and more to check out.  For tips on traveling to Chiang Mai from Bangkok check out this the post by Backpackers Wanderlust.

Day 4

Next day, you can visit the Old City of Chiang Mai. By now, you know the prevalence of Wats in and around Bangkok and in Chaing Mai, you will not find any difference.

The number of Wats you will come across in the Old City is also high. There are intricately designed temples or Wats like the Wat Phra Singh, which is by far, the most celebrated one.

It then comes the Wat Chedi Luang that is one of the oldest Buddhist temples once even housing the famous Emerald Buddha. Besides that, there is the Wat Sri Suphan with its shimmery coat of silver paint that gleams in the morning sun and in evening lights.

The night bazaar or market at Chiang Mai- Kat Rin Kham market, the Kalare Night Market, and others are great destinations for shopping for the local items. From mouth-watering local delicacies to more, these places will be worth the time.

Day 5, 6 7

The next-day trip across Chiang Mai can be through the local markets and other sights. A Saturday and Sunday Walking Market is a must visit, and if you love adventure trails, then visiting the local parks and going for nature trail experiences can be a great way to enjoy Chaing Mai like no other.

While in Chiang Mai you are also only a 3 hour drive to Chiang Rai. There are plenty of things to do in Chiang Rai, its also said to be much more relaxed than both Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

Where To Stay In Phuket

For tips on where to stay in Phuket, I have a post on the best areas to stay in Phuket which includes tips on hotels for budget, mid-range and luxury budgets.

Week 3 – Krabi Islands and Koh Samui

As the penultimate leg of your Thai trip comes to a close, how about ending it on a memorable beach destination?

Krabi Islands is one of those parts around the world where you can still expect some serenity on the beach. The presence of more than one awesome beach is perhaps the reason for you to get that very necessary relaxation you have craved all your life.

Day 1 Krabi

Once you reach Krabi Islands, the first step is to book a boat that shall take you to Railay Beach. Though a little away from the city, it is definitely better at that way.

The Railay Beach has lush green landscape, amazing hilltops, and uneven landscape and the beach waters in its cerulean tones to mesmerize you.

You can spend an entire day here and then go back to your resort in Krabi. Likewise, you can spend the rest of the evening exploring the Krabi Town. Usually, the tourists spend an entire day exploring Railay Beach, and it is not surprising.

Day 2

The next day you can go to the Pak Bia Islands if you love white sandy beaches and more beach activities. The island is ideal for those willing to detox and relax or simply cannot have enough of the waters.

You can even take a boat and go back to Krabi Island. If you have time in hand, you can even try going to the Thung Teao Forest Natural Park and take snaps of the beautiful Emerald Pool.

Day 3

Your next day can begin with a trip to the dense forest of Khao Phra Bang Khram Natural Reserve adjacent to which there is the Klong Thom Hot Springs.

Tourists can just take a dip in these naturally therapeutic waters that have come out of volcanic rocks. Just 46 km from Krabi is a quaint little island called the Mu Koh Hong where you can camp and indulge in water sports like snorkeling and even dining on some of the sumptuous seafood.

Day  4    Koh Samui

After spending four days in Krabi and taking in all the sights and sounds, you can surely make your way to yet another scintillating destination on your trip.

That destination is the Koh Samui, and you have an option of taking a bus and ferry to go to this island from Krabi Islands. Likewise, a faster alternative is to go by air, which might take less than an hour but with a higher price tag.

Day 5

There are so many cool things to do in Koh Samui, but for the first day you can go to Chaweng from where you can take a thirty-minute cab to Koh Samui’s Big Buddha temple.

The temple is on a high altitude allowing you to get a bird’s eye view of the nearby places. You can then check out the Secret Buddha Garden where there are plenty of Buddha statues made of stone. Great spot to be in for a photographer!

Next stop can be the Wat Plai Laem temple that has an imposing statue of Guanyin, a goddess with eighteen arms. The massive size of this idol is something to take in with time and of course, the overall beauty of the temple’s environs will be awe-inspiring.

A visit to Koh Samui is incomplete without the day ending with shopping at the Chaweng Night Market from where you can shop for anything under the sky literally.

Day 6/7

Next day, take a ferry to the party islands of Koh Tao where you can spend the daytime diving or swim through the crystal-clear waters around the island.

Post sunset, the party begins and goes on till mornings and that is what makes the Koh Tao even more important. Another day trip can be to the Koh Phangan. You can go back to Koh Samui by ferry in as little as thirty minutes.

Not just islands and beaches, Koh Samui also has Na Muang Waterfalls and Ang Thong Marine Park for those who love nature at its pristine best.

As the trip concludes, you will surely have this feeling of wanting to visit the soulfully captivating country of Thailand again.

This is what makes Thailand all the more special and great in every way. I have left enough room in the itinerary if you wanted to switch it up and add Khao Sok National Park, Koh Lanta, Koh Phangan or Surat Thani which is easily accessible from Koh Samui.

Where To Stay In Thailand

As far as where to stay in Thailand during your 3 weeks Thailand itinerary really depends on your budget and preferred comfort levels. I shared where we stayed in Bangkok in addition to providing a guide on the best areas to stay in Bangkok. I did the same for Phuket where I shared a guide on areas to stay in Phuket but also shared tips on the best hotels in Phuket for all budgets.

We sampled a couple of places in Phuket at low, mid and luxury budgets which have all ben documented on the blog. By far my favourite website to book my hotels is Booking.Com  as well as Hotels.Com which had some great January travel discounts. One of the reasons I love Booking.com is that you can book hotels in advance and still be able to cancel them if your plans change.

So you can book your hotels for Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui in advance but should you should to add say Chiang Rai or another Thai city you can change your booking.com easily on their site but for travellers they also have a great mobile app that I find really handy to use on the move. For additional tips on where to stay in Chiang Mai, check out Treksplorer.

What To Pack For A Trip To Thailand | 3 Weeks In Thailand – What To Pack

So, what to take to Thailand for 3 weeks? Thailand is a pretty tropical country so even in the rain season, you will find that it clears quickly and before you know it, the weather is good enough to lounge on the beach. For tips on what to pack for Thailand, check out  Wandering Quinn.

The Perfect 3 Weeks In Thailand Itinerary - Things to do in Thailand for 3 weeks The Perfect 3 Weeks In Thailand Itinerary - Things to do in Thailand for 3 weeks

Planning A Trip To Thailand | 3 Weeks In Thailand Costs

So we are now on to how much money to take on the ultimate Thailand vacation. As I mentioned above when it comes to hotels it really depends on your preference on comfort. You will be glad to know that there are plenty of amazing places to stay from hostels to luxury hotels and villas that won’t break the bank. Food is also super cheap too as you have your pick from tasty street food to lux Michelin star restaurants.

Your flight will mainly be the most costly of expenses for the trip to Thailand. Hotels can be as cheap as £20 a night. For budget hotels in Phuket check out my review of Gold Diggers Resort and for mid range check out my post on Ikon hotel and for something more in the Luxury hotel market we also stayed at Renaissance Hotel in Phuket.

To estimate your hotel expenses I would recommend using the above Thailand itinerary and then costing the hotel nights in each city for the type of hotel you prefer. Once you do that I would then suggest you cost at least one whole day tour in each city. So for Phuket, we enjoyed 2 island hopping day trips which saw us exploring Phang Nga Bay as well as James Bond Island the various activities included in that.

Most of these tours will range from £30 and up depending on activities included. Again I have included a couple of tours for inspiration but also check out Viator Tours for more.  You can easily budget for £100o for your trip after your flight. If you stay in reasonably priced accommodation, factor in tours, transport and food and you could do that on a budget. For a more mid-range budget to lux you are looking at £2-3k+.

Travel package to Thailand

If you are one of those that prefers everything to be arranged and know the budget of the trip then maybe consider looking at 3-week travel package to Thailand. Contiki tours do amazing package trips to Thailand as well as multi-country package tours to Asia. The guarantee plenty of fun as you take to your Thailand 3 weeks backpacking trip. Also, GAdventures and Exodus Travels do amazing package tours to Thailand and Asia.

Getting Around In Thailand

So, if you are one of those thinking “is 3 weeks in Thailand enough“, hope the above gives you an idea of just how much exploring you can do in as well as an inkling to how much money to take to Thailand for 3 weeks.  The other element I wanted to include is that of getting around between the islands and the cities.

We flew from Bangkok to Phuket and then used ferries between islands. Flights you can easily book with Expedia or directly with Air Asia. Our sites between cities were not more than £50 return so if you are buying one way expect even less but also look out for additional luggage charges so pack wisely.

Thai Trip Planning Q1. What’s a Good Itinerary For 1 Week or 2 Weeks in Thailand?

If you only have one week in Thailand I would strongly suggest doing 3 days in Bangkok, 2 days exploring and 1-day floating marking. Then one of the islands for beaches temples and relaxing. Phuket I would say needs a minimum or at least 3-4 days in Phuket because you are going to use up one of those days for day trip to Koh Phi Phi islands. If you have 2 weeks then I recommend adding Chiang Rai,  Krabi or Koh Samui. Again, having lots of exploring time and then islands for relaxation and island hopping.

Thai Trip Planning Q2. When Is The Best Time To Visit Thailand?

Ideally, any time is great as the weather in Thailand is tropical and tends to be warm all year round but I don’t like traveling during the rainy season especially if your main trip is all about beaches. I would see the best times to visit Thailand is around December, November, and January.

Thai Trip Planning Q3.  What Is The Best Itinerary For 5 Days In Thailand?

My advice here is similar to the question on what to do in Thailand for one week. Do maybe 2 days in Bangkok, one full day or even 2 full days of exploring. If you do one day in Bangkok and then a day trip to the floating market. Then book your flights in advance for Phuket, Koh Samui or any other destination of your choice in Thailand. Make sure you also book your tours in Bangkok or tours in Phuket in advance. Also, make sure you book your flights out of Bangkok to Phuket in Advance so everything is set for your trip to Thailand. One of the cheapest airlines with plenty of flights in Thailand and heading to Cambodia, Vietnam and surrounding countries is Air Asia. You can book flights in advance via Expedia just like we did. Tickets tend to be in the region of £50 for a return.

Thai Trip Planning Q4. What’s the best itinerary for Thailand with children?

Many of the cities in Thailand cater to family holidays. There are hotels for both budget and luxury that cater to those wanting to travel to Thailand with Children. While it was just myself and my boyfriend for this trip many of the places we visited can be explored with children. Many of the tours we did in Phuket had children on them. If you are able to you can also have your own private family longboat for you and your family. They are not expensive and it means that you can do your Thailand itinerary with some parts that include children’s activities. There is the Trick Eye Museum and Upside Down House in Phuket which is a hit with children. Many of the island hopping tours are also just as great and suitable for kids too.

Thai Trip Planning Q5. Whats The Best Itinerary For A Couple Visiting Thailand

As I mentioned above it was myself and my boyfriend on this trip so I guess that counts as couples visiting Thailand. My advice for couples when you plan your trip to Thailand or if you are planning on spending time in Phuket, pick places that allow you to have plenty of privacy. Like an apartment, or a villa. I shared in a post on our private villa in Phuket, or you can also pick from the many amazing hotels that come with private beaches vs public beaches. I have also shared a post on the best areas to stay in Phuket to help you narrow things down. Another thing that some couple might consider in their island hopping for their trip to Thailand is renting their own long boat tour.

There you have it, a perfect 3 week Thailand itinerary. Is there any other place you would have included?

Patong, located on the West Coast of Phuket, is the most popular beach resort town on the island and one of more popular tourist locations in Phuket. With a beautiful white sand beach facing the Andaman Sea, it is a highly frequented area for tourists and locals alike. Staying in Patong Beach, you will only be about a half hour’s ride away from Wat Chalong, Phuket’s most revered Buddhist Temple.

Another popular village in Phuket is Kamala. It gives visitors a more authentic and quiet Thailand experience. It is not as crowded or offers the type of night life one comes to expect from areas like Patong as it offers a quieter and more relaxed feel to Phuket. So, while it too boasts a lovely beach open to visitors and locals, Kamala Beach is not as crowded as in Patong or Karon.

Kamala Beach also has some of the international hotels (e.g. Marriott Courtyard) as well as villas and apartments that attract retirees and long-term visitors. So, step back in time, relax, and enjoy a slower paced travel at Kamala. For more hotels in Kamala Beach.

But, you can travel over to the town of Cherng Talay where residents make their living as fishers, farmers, and from rubber tapping. Or enjoy the uncrowded 6km long beach to yourself.

Phi Phi Island Hopping | Exploring Loh Samah Bay And Maya Bay

January 28, 2018 by admin 2 Comments

Ko Phi Phi Island - Thailand - Phi Phi Island Tour | Exploring Loh Samah Bay And Maya Bay

If you are heading to Phuket, a Phi Phi island tour is a must! Phi Phi island is composed of two beautiful little islands; Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Ley.  There isn’t much to do on Phi Phi Don so the majority of the Phi Phi island tours head to Phi Phi Ley. This is where you will find Loh Somah Bay and Maya Bay that I shared about in a separate post. Loh Somah bay is surrounded with huge limestone cliffs and uninhibited by humans other other a few monkeys. This beautiful little island also draws in diving beginners for diving trips due to its shallow diving spots. Experience divers stick to the seaward side of Loh Somah bay.

Another attraction here is the popular Maya Bay made famous by the movie The Beach featuring Leonardo DiCaprio. A snorkeling paradise with clear turquoise water and soft white sand The island of Phi Phi Ley was never inhabited by anything except birds. The huge limestone cliffs house several caves. One of these caves is the famous Viking Cave. This is where Phi Phi Island locals climb the treacherous cliffs without even a harnesses.

Most Phi Phi island tours stop at Maya Bay first and you simply walk over to the other side of the island to find Lo Samah Bay. Usually, people are busy taking selfies on Maya Bay without realising that you can easily walk over to this little section of the beautiful island. Depending on the tour, you may alternatively stop by Loh Samah Bay first and then walk over to Maya Bay. Definitely, don’t forget to check this place out. This is Phuket’s most important landmarks. A 45-meter tall Phuket Big Buddha statue which can be seen from miles away sits atop of the Nakkered Hills. Visiting Big Buddha has another plus to it, the 360-degree views of the islands and its beaches can all be seen from the hill. From here you get a stunning view on three large bays.

Directly in front of the Big Buddha is Chalong Bay. On clear days you can see all the way to Phang Nga Bay. To the west of Big Buddha, you’ll get a nice view on Kata Bay and Kata Noi Bay.

The best spot to see the third bay is actually to stop at the restaurant on the way up. From up there you can also get a great view of Karon Beach. Big Buddha is located in Chalong, the site is open from 8.30am to 7.30pm. For tours that take you to Big Buddha and many other spots in Phuket click here. For more details on how to find the statue and dress code when visiting Big Buddha check one Phuket Net.

3. Take A Phang Nga Bay Tour

James Bond location scouts have made this into a star that would rival Bond himself(would that be Roger Moore as Bond). This is one Phuket experience that is an absolute must do. This tour also takes yours around the hongs.

You can have the day tours that make a couple of stops with your guided tour of the hongs on an inflatable rowboat or you also have tours here that include a day and night visit to the hongs. You can read more on my tour to Phang Nga Bay.

4. See A Phuket Fantasea Show

If you are looking for cool and unusual things to do in Phuket beyond beach activities then check out Fantasea is Phuket’s Cultural theme park. It showcases Thai heritage in an evening of dining with entertainment on a 60-acre carnival village. It is also the island’s most extravagant shows.

The carnival’s village included stalls where jewellery, Thai silk products, and other goods are sold but once settled into on of the 4000-seat buffet restaurant, you are in for a night of stage acrobatics, dancing, illusions and stunts bringing Thailand’s legends in a 70-minute show. Tickets to FantaSea are around £40/$50.

5. Beach Hopping on Phuket’s Best Beaches

Visiting Phuket’s best beaches is a breeze as most if not all are absolutely stunning. Phuket beaches offer amazing scenery withing pickings from quiet beaches ones to the lively beaches with party-hardy types like Patong Beach, a Phuket beach you want to add to your list and a pretty popular one too.

Patong Beach is one of the busiest beaches in Phuket with 2.5 km of coastline. Patong Beach is the home of huge number of hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs, and attractions. Its one of the best places in Phuket to visit for the nightlife.

One of favorites is Mai Khao Beach where Renaissance is located. If you want a good party then party, then Patong is where people come out to play. There are hundreds of restaurants, bars, nightclubs.

For a quieter experience without going too far out, head to Kamala Beach which lies north of the lively Patong and offers a more relaxed feel surrounded by forested hills. For a guide to Phuket’s best beaches and which one to choose from check out YTravel’s post on beaches not to miss.

6. Visit Phuket Old Town

This is another part of the island worth a visit. There many thing to do in Phuket Old Town as this is where you will find old and unique Sino-Portuguese architecture. Check out Thalang, Dibuk, and Krabi Roads.

They are lined with beautiful 100-year old shops and houses with oozing with European influences in a style which include British and Portuguese influence who came to the island to stake their claim on the booming tin industry wealth of a century ago. Close by in Phuket’s Old Town towards Yaowarat Rd is where you will find Phuket Old Town a fresh market.

Recently the long-standing fresh market was torn down and a two-storey market with a parking underneath has been erected and this location is where many of the traders and market stall owners brought their business during its construction with some staying on. Simply wander around and check out the shops and market, museums without spending too much time thinking about ticking off things to do in Phuket Old Town.

You will easily find yourself wondering what life was like when the historical buildings were built, what life was like for the people that lived there as well as the little things like transportations, what people would wear in Phuket, the whole area is just fascinating.

Food in Thailand - Things to do in Phuket | 10 Experiences You Need To Have In Phuket

7. Check Out Phuket’s Food Scene – Head To Raya Restaurant

Although we didn’t spot any A-lists when we drop nearby, Raya Restaurant is said to be frequented by A-list movie stars, prime ministers, and royalty who come to lap up delicious Thai meals.

Looking for things to do in Phuket honeymoon ideas? Then a romantic dinner here needs to be on your list. It is housed in a mansion built in the early 20th century. If you like the food you can also sign up for Thai cooking classes. Located on Dibuk Road in Old Phuket Town. Open 10am-10pm. Worth a stop as the food is also reasonably priced.

8. Take A Phuket Bike Tour

Check out Phuket’s countryside on a bike tour that takes you to less explored parts of the island that take you through fishing villages, rice paddies, unique mosques and natural beauties.

The tour included a lunch as well while you cover 30km of land. The tours costs about £40-80 and run for 5-10 hours depending on which itinerary you go for.

9. Phuket Massage Experience

This is among must things to do in Phuket and actually if you are visiting Asia alltogether. Having been in Cambodia before flying to Thailand I was already a massage addict by the time I arrived in the country. Going cold turkey was not an option so the only option was to continue with this feel-good ritual or spreading yourself in your birthday suit and allowing the Thai ladies take you to heaven.

Hold your horses! There was no “happy ending” on my menu, thank you very much! I would gladly head back to Cambodia or Thailand for those massages though. For $5-10, can you see why they made it onto this list of things to do in this part of the world? Trust me, you will thank me. Your body will thank you. If you do get a happy ending, keep that between you and the hands that get you there…Jesus

10. Check Out Phuket Night Markets

For such a small Island it does have enough markets to keep you busy with bargain hunting. Most open after the heat of the day has passed and closed late in the evening. Check out Phuket Markets. Phuket night market is the largest of all night markets on the island. It’s very popular which means crowds! For something a little less crowded, check out Phuket Walking Street Market which is set in Phuket Old Town, selling handicrafts, clothes, and other apparel.

For a local touch check out Ind Market which is local bring their own goods for sale, a little different to professional peddlers. Indy Market is also a lot quiet compared to Weekend Market.

Malin Plaza Patong also has a market which is popular for its food stalls. Within the same area is also where you will find Royal Paradise Night Market which is a collection of 100 stalls selling a range of goods from clothes, mobile phones, accessories and many other items.

Things to do in Phuket with Family

There are plenty of things to do in Phuket with family, from shows like Phuket Fantasea show mentioned above, there are museums geared towards families and kids, water parks, go-karting, ziplining and more.  For tours you can do with family check out Viator Tours.

Things To Do In Phuket At Night | Phuket Nightlife

Night markets, nightclubs, nightlife in Phuket is plentiful. From bar hopping in Phuket Bangla Road or Soi Bangla to the bustling nightlife on Phuket Patong beach which is one of the main hubs for night time activities in Phuket.

So, what does Patong Beach nightlife draw in the crowds? Well, the sheer number of restaurants, clubs and beautiful beaches of course! But, for those visiting Patong Beach or Phuket for the first time, it can be a little intimidating or be overwhelming so read up on what to expect so you can prepare yourself.

In addition to all that, you can also have evening shows with Thailand’s lady-boys. For more inspiration on things to do in Phuket at night check out Ithaka’ guide on things to do at night on the island.

Best Places and Where To Stay in Phuket

For a detailed guide on where to stay in Phuket you can check out my post on the best areas to stay in Phuket. There are many places to stay in Phuket. From beachfront resorts to luxury Villas with private pool to budget accommodation that won’t break the bank.

We based ourselves in Phuket and sample a couple of places from our stay at Gold Digger’s Resort(cool name huh), Ikon Hotel and Renaissance Beach Hotel, all of which you can read about on the blog.

The majority of the hotels are along the eastern part of the island with a variety of options from backpackers budget to big rental homes that would satisfy Brad and Angelina budgets to luxury beach hotels. If you are heading to Phuket and looking for hotels in Phuket click here.

How To Get To Phuket

There are over 70 cities with flights direct into Phuket’s airport. From China, Russia, Germany, Australia to name a few, all have direct flights to Phuket. For others its usually best to arrive in Bangkok and then head to Phuket.

We arrived in Bangkok and then took a flight from Bangkok to Phuket on Air Asia which does cheap flights for around £50 return or you can do a single flight for around £20.

Check out Kayak for cheap flights around Asia. We managed to fly to Phuket and then from there flew out to Kuala Lumpur for a pretty penny. Air Asia provides a low-cost way to explore Asia without having to spend hours on buses, even though cheap, traveling around when you could be exploring.

How To Get From Phuket Airport To Patong Beach, Karon Beach or Phuket Town.

A lot of the hotels can help you make arrangements from Phuket Airport to many of the beach resorts and hotels around the island. The route from Phuket airport to Patong is one that is most sort after as its popular for tourist amenities, nightlife and restaurants with the famous Bangla Road and convenience to the airport in addition to Karon beach.

We took one of the minibusses from the airport to where we were going to be staying first on the island. The costs around 100-180 Bhat depending on where in Phuket you are going.

You can also take a taxi but make sure the driver puts the meter on to avoid being ‘taken for a ride’. Taxis from the Phuket Airport also add another 100 Bhat for the airport fee.

You can also hire a car in Phuket but we didn’t find this necessary as for most of the major tours they collect you from your hotel so having a car was unnecessary and for random trips to explore some of the beaches you can easily use the taxis or bus services.

I would only recommend a car rental in Phuket if you are staying for a long period and want to explore as much of the Island as possible getting to parts with poor transport options.

Thailand Travel Guide & Essentials Packing List – What To Pack For Thailand

What To Pack For Thailand - Thailand Travel Guide & Essentials

My Thailand travel guide at last! It’s not every day you wake up and have the beach all to yourselves, unless you are in, maybe Phuket. This little Thai island is just paradise! I wish I could have stayed forever. I guess in a way I now understand why people stay on and live in Thailand. Below are some of my tips on Thailand travel in addition to what to pack for Thailand. You could certainly live there and not miss any “Western comforts”. You want shopping, Bangkok is filled with shopping malls from designer boutiques to purse-friendly stores. When it comes to the weather, let’s just say the London summers are blown right out of the water!

After doing the James Bond Tour and the Ko Phi Phi Tour, we wanted a little break from any activities and just lounge about like the world had stopped spinning for a while. Mai Khao beach where Renaissance Resort and Spa is located is simply Paradise. Even better in the morning for sunrise, as the beach is all yours to enjoy on your own with a loved one by your side. What makes Mai Khao Beach is its 11km-long straight beach, much of which is still undeveloped apart from JW Marriott Phuket Resort, the airport which sits at the top of the northwestern coast. This means that you can walk for miles and miles and not see a soul other than maybe one or two joggers from the resort.

I shared a couple more picture of our private villa at Renaissance. If need a short break from the activities on the island I would highly recommend a bit of rest and relaxation at Renaissance, if for this beautiful stretch of the beach alone! I have posted a couple of posts on Thailand which include tips and tricks on tours that we did in Thailand. In this post I thought I would provide you a little help when booking for a trip to Thailand. As far a what to pack for Thailand, getting there and getting around, including where to stay in Thailand whether heading to Phuket, Chiang Mai or Bangkok. Read on below for more.

Getting To Thailand | How To Get Around Thailand?

Getting around Thailand is super easy. Flights from Thailands major cities like Bangkok are easy, frequent and cheap connecting to other Thai cities, islands and international destinations too. We flew in from Bangkok to Phuket having arrived from Siem Reap, then flew out from Phuket to Kuala Lumpur all using AirAsia which has plenty of cheap flights and make traveling around Asia cheap and easy. One of few sites you can compare flight prices that include Asia’s cheap carries is Kayak.

If you are traveling from major cities in Europe or more specifically London like we were, the best flight prices from the UK tend to be from the end of May. You can compare prices on Momondo, Kayak orExpedia. For details of getting around Thailand see below:

  • Buses Extensive and affordable for travel between towns.
  • Air Cheap and frequent domestic connections on budget airlines.
  • Trains Slow but scenic between Bangkok, the north, the northeast and the south.
  • Car & motorcycle Easy to hire for local touring.
  • Local transport Shared and chartered taxis and motorcycles are widely available.

Our Phuket Villa At Renaissance + Luxury Hotels In Phuket

Luxury Private Pool Villa Phuket | Phuket Villa Rental | Our Phuket Villa At Renaissance + Luxury Hotels In Phuket

Thailand has been on my bucket list for long time and the fact that this trip was going to be around the time of my birthday I wanted a little special treat by way of a private villa in Phuket. We had a whirlwind trip passing through Budapest, Beijing. By the way, if you want to find out how to take advantage of the 72-hour visa-free entry to China then read my posts on China.

We also passed through Cambodia for yet more bucket list adventures checking out the Angkorian temples. So by the end of December, we checked into Renaissance Phuket for a much needed RnR session. What better way than having a private villa with a pool all to yourself!  The private pool villa, Phuket offered was just what the doctor ordered.

With all that, the service is impeccable.

You ask for nothing and you get absolutely everything. I hadn’t mentioned my birthday but when I went down for breakfast I was surprised with a birthday cake with my name on it. If you are in absolute paradise then look no further than Renaissance. We had our own private pool villa Phuket had outdone itself in terms or its hospitality.

Even better was having the beach only a few steps away. I spent a few mornings witnessing magical sunrise and sunsets on the beautiful beach that stretched for miles(pictures to follow).

Best Place To Stay In Phuket + Gold Diggers Resort Review

August 23, 2016 by admin 2 Comments

Best Place To Stay In Phuket + Gold Diggers Resort Review

Having spent some time in Bangkok, I was looking forward to leaving the city life and exploring Thailand’s beautiful islands. I had already search high and low for the best places to stay in Phuket when I stumbled on a curiously named hotel. A name so cool that I of course booked! My mind had conjured up so many things when I first spotted the name of the hotel and at $40 a night I thought to myself it can’t really be that bad, can it? To my relief, it was bad at all. In addition to the name, I chose it because it was a short distance from the airport as we were flying from Bangkok in the late afternoon. Arriving in Phuket in the evening and straight on to an early start for a day tour to Phang Nga Bay.  I shared a post on 9 experiences you need to have in Phang Nga Bay.  We were going to be doing the Phang Nga Bay or James Bond Island tour which takes of from the piers near in the Northern part of Phuket. Hence why were wanted to base ourselves this side of the island. When looking at places to stay in Phuket, while the tour pick up will pick you up from anywhere you are staying on the island, just bear in mind that the where you stay might also mean you are adding at least an hour and a half to your journey before you get to the pier where the tour starts and possible being collected 2 hours before everyone at 6 or 7am. Fortunately, Gold Digger’s Resort was only a short ride to where the pier was so we were one of the last people to be picked up which meant more time in bed.

Golddiggers Resort was surprisingly welcoming, the place is set in a quiet location, rooms are clean and spacious for what you pay for. All come with ceiling fan, fridge and safe. There is also a communal pool right outside the rooms, surrounded by beautiful palm trees creating a relaxed environment to chill out. The beach and shops are only a short walk away from the resort, together with a few restaurants. The reception and resort staff were really friends and helpful with tours and details of surrounding amenities.  Our stay in Phuket also included a stay at Ikon Hotel and The Renaissance Beach Resort, which you can read about here on the blog.  During our stay in Phuket, we sampled a variety of hotels both luxury and budget and both inland and right on the beach. To find the best place to stay in Phuket and sample the stunning beaches Phuket has to off here is a likes a list of hotels in Phuket.
