The second-largest city in Germany with tourists going as far as calling it the most beautiful city in the world, Hamburg is an irresistible tourist destination. With its embracing architecture and rich history, the city houses the most culturally and diversely satisfying people and places. It is a home to the drooling Hamburgers and is called Gateway to the World for a reason.

Every year a whopping number of 13000 boats come into the biggest port in Germany. I have had many a business and leisure trip to Germany. On this occasion what drew us, and by us, I mean my sisters and I was my little chubby nephew. We were visiting family in Germany, so I have tried to provide a condensed version of our Hamberg itinerary into one day of exploring…

Hamburg is expensive but worth every cent. Without stressing enough, the place clearly distinguishes itself in terms of a majestic and awe-inspiring tourist destination. You might have a question about what to do in Hamburg in 1 day? Do not worry, exploring this beautiful city in just 24 hours is the primary focus of this guide. It will enlighten you on the things to do in Hamburg in 1 day but should you have more time in the city there is plenty more to do, in addition to options for day trips too.

Activities To Do In Hamburg In One Day

You cannot explore all of Hamburg in 1 day and experience everything that the city has to offer. However, you can make the most of the time you have. To get out the most from Hamburg at a pocket-friendly cost, below are the places to visit in Hamburg in one day in addition to recommended tours in Hamburg that truly deserve to be on any itinerary.

9:00 AM Hamburg Town Hall

One of the first places to visit in Hamburg is the home to Hamburg’s senate and parliament – Hamburg Town Hall. It is open for the whole week from Monday to Sunday from 8 AM to 6 PM. It is built on top of 4000 piles of oak sunk in the ground and has a staggering number of 647 rooms! This majestic building was constructed somewhere between 1886 and 1897.

In front of the hall houses, a popular venue is Rathausmarkt for markets, concerts, or fairs. If you want to know its history, you can take the help of a guided tour for 5 Euros, which can last for about 45 minutes. However, the tour is offered in German. There are tours in English at 11:15, 13:15, and 15:15. The magnificent sandstone edifice stands tall at the center of the mesmerizing city!

11:00 AM Church of St Michael

Out of the many churches in Hamburg, this is the most prominent one you should not miss visiting. This church is one of the must-sees on your Hamburg itinerary. Initially constructed in the year 1647 with many renovations being done after that, the 132-meter colossus has 450 steps to climb. There is also an elevator if you are not up to the challenge. From the observation deck, which costs 5 EUR, you can enjoy a mesmerizing panorama of the beautiful city.

12:30 PM Jungfernstieg

After taking a tour from the town hall, walk towards Binnenalaster. Nestled between Binnenalaster and the church that you had visited near Lake Alster, you can find a beautiful promenade. Jungfernstieg was the first paved street in Germany in 1838. Historically speaking, the wealthy families used to bring their Jungfern, German for unmarried daughter in search of a groom.

You can take a stroll here and stop for ice cream too! It is one of the primary shopping streets in Hamburg and bustling with people. You can have quality time here shopping and drinking coffee at one of the cafes. The sightseeing of water from Jungfernstieg has proved to be an overwhelming experience for the tourists.

Walk towards the south from the museum towards the famous Port of Hamburg. Added to the UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015, this place is the largest warehouse in the world! It has 17 buildings where each building has a height of around 7 to 8 stories.

Quantifying its space, it has about 300000 sq m in the storage area. Interspersed with bridges and fleets, it looks like a city itself! Earlier, the warehouses were used to store tea, coffee, spices, etc. but now you will find many warehouses converted into residential complex and functioning offices. 2:30 PM Kunsthalle Hamburg

Walk to the other side of the Alster lake from Jungfernsteig towards the Kunsthalle museum. A visit to Hamburg without dropping a visit to this museum would be incomplete. One of the most outstanding art museums in Germany, it houses artworks with a span of around 700 years.

The artworks include works by Manet, Goya, Munch, Rembrandt, and Vincent Van Gogh. Caspar David Friedrich’s “The Polar Sea” and Philipp Otto Runge’s “Morning” are the most famous paintings that are must watch here. If you are an art connoisseur, you will not be satisfied with 2 hours.

You can sit and admire the sculptures and artworks for days! You will also find a gallery of contemporary art, which houses a collection of canvases by celebrated Francis Bacon, Picasso, Warhol, Kandinsky, and so on. The museum is closed on Mondays and opens on Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

It is better to plan your trip on days other than a Monday if you want to cherish the artworks. Moreover, you will be charged an entrance fee of 14 EUR, which may sound expensive, but worth your money. If possible, try to book entrance tickets online as it will save you time.

4:00 PM Time for Hamburg Specials!

Your eyes have had a share of its merriment; your taste buds crave for some delicacies too! Fischbrotchen and Franzbrotchen will surely stimulate your taste buds.

With some German Bear, you can have the first one from Brucke 10 or Fischbrotchen Konig near St Pali Piers. It is a bun sandwich with fish topped with onions, pickles, and remoulade. If you want to savor pastries, Hamburg has its delicacy named Franzbrotchen. This pastry baked with cinnamon is mouth-watering. The coating is crunchy, and chocolates and other things could be used as add on.

6:00 PM Alter Elbtunnel

You can utilize your next few minutes to take a stroll through the longest river tunnel of the world – the Old Elbtunnel. It has a depth of 24 meters and 426.5 meters in length, which makes it the longest. It was constructed in the year 1911 to provide convenience to the harbor workers in commuting across the ports. However, everyone in Hamburg uses this tunnel, as it is the quickest route across.

You can see thousands of pedestrians and cyclists using this route to get across. The best part of the tunnel is, you can explore its uniqueness in just 10 minutes! Alter Elbtunnel, unlike other modern tunnels, will spark historical significance, making it a historically preserved site since 2003. The entry is free for the pedestrian and cyclists.

Herbertstrabe is a street where sex workers attract potential customers through their charms. However, worry not as the street is sealed off. Naturally, the area is under strict police surveillance. At the end of this street, you will come across Beatles Platz. They are life-like silhouettes made of steel consisting of the Beatles band. Autumn In Dusseldorf’s Konigsalle | The Best Food, Coffee, and Shopping Are All in This One Neighbourhood

Dusseldorf Konigsalle is such a beautiful sight. Fall is one of my favourite seasons for many reasons. I love that the weather is mild and the beautiful colours on the trees, to the falling leaves that fall off the trees like snowflakes from the sky.

I love it all and its the only time my hair behaves itself when I straighten it compared to the joys of Summer humidity. That is one of few reasons that drew me to Dusseldorf’s luxurious shopping Avenue that is Konigsalle. Its the dazzling colours of Autumn on this beautiful boulevard and the reflections across the canals and bridges. It extends from Hofgarten Park canal nearby.

Konigsalle is divided by the Stradtgraden canal and lined with beautiful trees with cute bridges that connect the two sides of the canal. Of course, it’s not just the beauty that draws’ people to visits Konigsalle. The main attraction here is, of course, the shopping!

Retail Therapy Dream City

Konigsalle is Dusseldorf(possibly German’s) most luxurious street. The boulevard is lined with some of the world’s most luxurious brands. The likes of Hermes, Luis Vuitton, Gucci and many famous boutiques are all here in one place. We rented a car while exploring Dusseldorf of the weekend visit but you don’t necessarily need to have a car as the transportation in Dusseldorf is great.

We had rented our car straight from the airport and as it was easier to attend the wedding we were heading to that weekend. The day after the wedding we had more time to explore the city. There is car park right next to Konigsalle so we left the car there and walked around the boulevard and into downtown and harbour area by the river. You also have downtown or old town of Dusseldorf nearby so we explored that and the many pubs nearby as they were getting into the festive season.

My visit was during November last year so just around this time of the year. If you have not been to Dusseldorf, I highly recommend the city. Its perfect for a city break when you just want to chill and enjoy a little time away with the fuss. There is plenty to do without feeling as if you are part of the hustle and bustle.

I love exploring new parts of the city each time I visit and Konigsalle was one that I missed out on during my last trip to Dusseldorf. Flights to Dusseldorf are so inexpensive from London. I believe two returns on this trip cost us a little over a £100. That’s a bargain in my books. You can read more on my trips to Dusseldorf on the blog.

In addition to shopping, there is plenty to see in Dusseldorf, more on this check out my posts on why you need to visit need to visit Dusseldorf. I mentioned above that Konigsalle canal are an extension of Hofgarten Park, well if you have time to spare this is another part of the city to include in your explorations of the surrounding area. Hofgarten is German’s first and oldest public park.

The park is adorned with historic monuments and sculptures. It’s just beautifully peaceful and serene places in the city and the perfect place to experience all that is glorious about Autumn with a relaxing walk in the park as you watch the season change colours right before you.

Where To Stay In Dusseldorf

As far as staying near the luxurious shopping Avenue. There a few hotels that sit on either side of the shopping avenue both luxury and some mid and budget range. Breidenbacher Hof– A Capella Hotel is just pure luxury in every way possible from the beautiful staircase at the entrance to the beautifully decorated rooms and the beauty of this places is that it is literally a stone’s through from Konigsalle’s boutique stores.

The prices are just as luxurious but if you go to the other end of the canal you will have Leonardo Royal Hotel Dusseldorf which also offers clean comfort minus the luxurious price tag. On this trip, I opted to stay at Renaissance Hotel as it was closer to the wedding venue we were heading to for my friend’s wedding.

On my previous weekend visit to Dusseldorf, I had stayed at the Marriot Courtyard that is right by the harbour and near the Frank Gehry buildings. To compare prices for hotels in Dusseldorf. Fashion, Architecture and the Art Scene – Why Germany’s Dusseldorf is a Must-Visit

Finally visiting Dusseldorf! With a crazy and hectic travel schedule work can sometimes bring, I am always grateful for the opportunities to meet people and build friendships with people I have met through work. A couple of years ago on a project far away from home and but with a diverse team covering many European countries, I made friends with a colleague from Germany.

Months later I was due to get certification for an IT course for which training was going to be held in Germany’s Kronberg. I knew it was the perfect timing to take up a colleague’s invitation for a guided tour of Dusseldorf before I embarked on my trip to Kronberg for training. So I booked hotel and flights to Dusseldorf, for my very own personal guided tour of the city.

This is how I got introduced to Dusseldorf. A beautiful German city that ticks all the boxes for me; impressive architecture, great art scene, nightlife and city sights and plenty to offer on the fashion scene. I was sold! Dusseldorf is known for its fashion industry and art scene two things that usually get the blood pumping when planning a visit to a new city. I have been to Frankfurt, Hamburg, Berlin, all of which are worthy of a visit. In addition to these also add Munich which has plenty of things to do.

So when the opportunity to visit again came up I was super excited to visit. This time I was returning to see my colleague get married to his soul mate. I, on the other hand, was bringing fiancé and getting the chance to show him around the city. If you haven’t heard or even been to Dusseldorf then here are a few reasons why you need to one of Germany’s best-kept secrets. While I had already been to Dusseldorf before and had a friend to guide me around, one of the best ways to explore the city is by the Dusseldorf hop-on-hop-off tour.

Architecture

I am a big fan of architecture and have been known to book flights just to see particular buildings before squeezing in a few sights then returning home. I swear in another leave I was probably an architect considering the way a gash over architectural detail. A visit to Dusseldorf is not complete without checking out the beautiful Frank Gehery buildings.

A set of three buildings with contrasting exterior and to a certain extent look much like a sculpture. Frank Gehry is a world renowned architect and one whose buildings draw visitors much for the buildings than their contents. These three buildings are no different and a must see if buildings are your thing as they are mine.

Fashion

Living in one of the world best fashion capitals, a lot of cities have to bring the best A-game to rival the exclusivity of some of London’s best boutiques stores or the likes of Regents Street, Bond Street, and Oxford Street. For any fashionista or anyone looking for a little retail therapy when you visit Dusseldorf the only place you need to head to is Konigsallee.

Known by its fans as “Ko”, it’s paradise for shoppers from high-end luxury shopping to every other budget in between. There is something to suit all budgets. Of course there are restaurants and cafes for refreshing treats in between burning plastic.

Art Scene

I had shared a post on our explorations of the street at the scene by way of Kiefernstrasse. If you are a lover of street art then Kiefernstrasse is a must see as you have apartments in the whole street covered in murals.

For more on the art scene, one cannot go wrong in a city that has over 100 galleries and museums. Check out Museum of Art(Museum Kunstpalast) with artwork that dates back from 3rd Centry BC, then you have quirk spots like Reinraum art exhibits within an old and disused public toilet.

Food

Dusseldorf straddles the Rhine River and with a bustling nightlife on the river’s edge one can also expect to gastronomy to match. Below is a video to give you an insight on what to expect.

Sights

With over 100 galleries, 26 museums, great architecture, an intriguing street art scene and bustle fashion high street you will have plenty to fill your time in the city. For a 360 degree view of the city, check out the Rheintrum or Rhine Tower, a tower standing at 216 meters and the city’s tallest building. It has a revolving restaurant in addition to being the world’s largest digital clock. Other sights to add to your list are Schloss Benrath a small palace with 3 museums and beautiful gardens. Also check Nordpark’s Japanese Garden, The Embarkment Promenade, and Schlossturm Castle Tower, the sole tower that survived a fire that consumed Dusseldorf’s fortress and castle complex.

Where to Stay

The first time I visited I stayed at Marriott Courtyardby the harbor which is next to another cool hotel by Meliaand my second visit I stayed at Renaissance Hotel. Both are great hotels. Marriott is a lot closer to the Old Town and meters from a few interesting sights. You can walk about half an hour to the Old Town but it also a few meters from the Frank Gehry buildings and Rhine Tower as well as sitting right by the riverside. Renaissance, on the other hand, is slightly in the land but still a beautiful hotel and solely selected because we were driving while in Dusseldorf and it was closer to the wedding venue as well as the offer of free parking at the hotel when we booked. Other places to consider are Hilton, Melia and Radisson Blu that is also near the riverside. There is also InterContinental Hotel which sits right by the fashion district of Konigasallee. Kiefernstrasse Street Art | A Colourful Side of Dusseldorf You Need To See

There is something that just brightens up your day with simply a splash of colour and Dusseldorf Kiefernstrasse Street Art has that effect on you the moment you arrive. Ever noticed how just wearing brightly coloured clothes will perk you up, even when the weather is dull and miserable? Yes, it’s that effect I get when I am exploring places with bright and evocative street art.

Street Art today, I guess isn’t what is used to be. It’s become more thought-provoking. It’s no longer just some street kids in dark hoodies that leave their tags all over the streets. I love the political side of it, focus on the current affair as well as social aspects of it. Dusseldorf’ Kiefernstrasse or Dusseldorf graffiti street whichever reference you choose, this is street in Dusselfdorf is a must-visit.

Throw in a little colour and I fall absolutely in love with it all. When you div deep into it, it’s no longer just about the message the art is trying to convey, but the personal style each of the street artist use. I may not know a lot of the street artists’ names but when I can recognise some of the street artist’s pieces when I travel I get excited. Pieces by Stik, Vhil’s use of small explosives to create distinctive portraits, Banksy’s political art not to mention his new installation in a form of a hotel in Palestine call the Walled Off Hotel.

Then there are big and rather ambitious murals. I think Kiefernstraße fits in the latter. Kiefernstraße is a street in the Flingern-Süd district of Düsseldorf that became notorious in the 1980s for squatting. Kiefernstraße has a rather colour past and I guess the street art somewhat represents that in a way.

Kiefernstraße apartment blocks were originally built for workers working within the steelworks factory in the 1900s but when the steelworks closed, the neighbourhood soon went downhill with the lack of investment in the area. By 1980 it was the only place that people could get affordable housing, not long after that, it was the place where the government sent refugees but without further investment and lack of affordable housing, the blocks were soon inhibited by squatters. Some 60 apartments were taken over and soon the squatters won a settlement to legalise there stay in the apartments.

With all it eventful past, there was a sense of community in how people in the neighbourhood rally to have rights to stay in the apartment. Much of the street art in Kiefernstraße has come about because of this community spirit, but I love that it is very much a multi-cultural area much like the city itself.

Dusseldorf like Munich is another great city in Germany that is rated as a livable city. There is plenty to do in Munich too. In one of the pictures below, you will see clothes on the line with a note. Instead of giving items to charity, people here leave items hanging out on the line for anyone to take and use. That were items go to homes that will get a better use out of them.

Murals and artwork in the Kiefernstraße are also undertaken as a community by the residents. The crossword on the white building was a collaborative effort by the residents in that building. I absolutely love that they painted the kindergarten with cartoons on the outside. I am sure it gives the kids something beautiful to look forward to each day.

I love that the murals and street art in Kiefernstraße are not just street art, they have a story to tell, it also brings the community together. It’s also played a role in elevating the neighbourhood from this rundown neighbourhood infamously known for squatters into something that now draws in tourist. “Kiefernstraße is now home to 800 people from 40 nations, including punks, doctors, and lawyers. It has long been a meeting point for alternative culture. The house fronts are painted with images reflecting some of the ideas and aspirations of the residents”

If you are a lover or everything beautifully colourful and yet with so much substance, then Kiefernstraße is one to add to your list when in Dusseldorf. We rented a car when we visited as it was easier to move around when we were in the city for a friend’s wedding. The street is easy to find but if you are not driving you will be happy to know that there is a metro station only a couple of blocks away.

2016 In Review | One Year – 10 Countries, 19 Cities + A Full-Time Job!

Here we are again! Another year in review. It feels like 2016 has come and gone too fast. We are in that weird and scary part of the year where it feels as if iconic figures are dropping off like flies as fate cherry picks those that won’t make it into the new year. Celebrity deaths of 2016; from the shocking death of Carrie Fisher from a heart attack, then her mother Debbie Reynolds the day after. Also, the death of Wham legend George Michael, then the likes of David Bowie, Ricky Harris, Prince, Gene Wilder.

It’s always sad when you lose people that you have grown up listening to and watching from a young age. It’s also a lesson that we must all live the lives we were intended to live, not living according to anyone else’s forced dreams or expectations of us. Live a life that is fearless, where we take charge of our own happiness. Both in our professional and personal lives. “So many people make that mistake and allow others fears and insecurities to change the trajectory of their lives.” If you need inspiration for pursuing your dreams and living a life without fear check out an interview with Natasha Rock on her move to live and teach in Saudi Arabia.

So how has 2016 treated you? For me, it feels weird that I haven’t really taken the time to really reflect on how things have gone. I have been travelling so much for both work and leisure that it feels like I have been coasting through the months without really looking back. I had a conversation with my new career advisor in my last week at work before the Christmas holidays, who reminded me just how important it is to take stock of things very regularly. I am now planning on looking through my goals for 2017 every quarter and assessing if they are on track and looking to re-adjust them continuously through the year.

We all have goals, whether personal or professional and I think sometimes fear gets in the way rather than an inability to actually achieve the goal. What if we do succeed. What will people think, how will they treat you, and all kinds of questions pop up, not as important, mind you! The fact of the matter is that we are usually the ones in the way of our own success. If you need a dose of inspiration for 2017, get a dose of Lisa Nichols. I have had her book for a long time now but hadn’t actually read it. I then came across a YouTube video of her, let’s just say that book is wide open now.

This year has actually been filled with many adventures that I am still stunned at how much travel I have had this year. Even though its 2 countries down from 2015. In 2015 I managed to travel to 12 countries and 21 cities. This year, I have travelled to 10 countries and 19 cities. In recent years I have enjoyed planning and taking on road trips as you saw in last years road trips through Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. This year has seen road trips in Iceland, Norway and Australia. Most of which I have yet to document but bear with me, they will publish soon.

Part of my yearly reviews is also to make sure that my travels are true to me as well as showcasing them in the hope to inspire you to get out there and see the world. Also, ensuring I am not travelling for likes, not travelling just to showcase to the Instagram world. It feels like the world has shifted down that path. People now posting uninspired shots because they saw someone else do it or because it draws in likes from the masses. Stop that! The yearly reviews also act as a way for me to review where I have been and what I have learned about myself through my travels. I love social media and the aspects of showcasing what is out there and inspire people to see the world.

I travel according to my budget, my needs, my interests. This is one of the reasons why I always find it difficult when bloggers are somewhat asked to put themselves into a niche category. We are complicated people with many facets to us. There are times that I want to travel even though the balance it’s acting against me, so you will find some budget trips posted on the blog. There are times I feel adventurous and catch a case of wonder woman where I want to scale mountain tops and camp out, or those times when I want to treat myself to a luxury hotel with killer views. Yes, I can do all that because this blog is about showcasing the possibilities out there if cast out fears for what people will think.

All of the sudden people are wondering which little box or niche you fit in, whether you are a budget, luxury, adventure blogger. I could easily fit in any of those boxes I am not jumping into any of those boxes! I am a travel blogger end of. I love adventure, I love luxury and those budget and cheap travels too. My blog is proof that one does not need to quit their job to travel, nor do you have to bee rich. Exploring just has to be a priority among your interests in life. So without further a’do. Travels from 2016…

10 COUNTRIES, 19 CITIES PLUS A FULL-TIME JOB!

1. CAMBODIA	Ushering in 2016 in true style in Siem Reap’s famous Pub Street. I got a lot more than I expected from Cambodia. I would go back in a heartbeat. Mainly for the super cheap but all-so-amazing massages. At $5-6 dollars you soon become addicted to them and want them every day. Sometimes twice a day. If you have not been to Cambodia. Go! You will not be disappointed. From beautiful(sometimes crowded) to the very quiet and serene temples that make you wonder just how amazing some of the temples looked in their heydey, considering most are in ruins today.
A city that one can never get enough of. I spent a couple of beautiful weekends in the city of lights with my fiancé. Each visit is different and nothing like the previous. I always seem to discover something new. The last visit had us stay on one of the avenues on Champs Elysees with an amazing view of the Arc de Triomphe as well as a view of the Eiffel Tower. There are a couple of posts on the blog to inspire your wonder when visiting Paris.	2. FRANCE
3. POLAND	I have been wanting to visit Poland’s colourful cities for far too long now. I have seen so many beautiful pictures of Gdansk, Wroclaw, Krakow. I stumbled on some great flights to Warsaw via RyanAir and was soon booking our stay in the city and planning what to see and do in Warsaw. If you haven’t seen it I made a travel video from our explorations of Warsaw
Always up for a little tropical weather and Malaysia doesn’t disappoint. Although this year’s visit of Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur was short. You can check out some blog post on Kuala Lumpur right here on the blog with many more posts and videos to come.	4. MALAYSIA
5. AUSTRALIA	Australia much like the USA has been on a weird travel ban list for me. I have issues with Australia’s treatment of refugees on the island of Nauru or USA’s denial in acknowledging there is a problem when it comes to the justice system towards black people. Refusing to acknowledge a problem doesn’t make it go away. As I have friends and family means that live in these countries means I still travel to these countries. I can only hope that 2017 see better years for both causes to a more just resolution. My visit to Australia saw me exploring Sydney, Melbourne and taking on road trips on the Great Ocean Road, Yarra Valley and seeing many of Melbourne’s beautiful and less touristy beaches.

6. ICELAND

Oh, what can one say one this little island? I have so many more adventures to write about from our explorations of Iceland. This was one of the highlights of the year for me, including Norway. I wasn’t sure what to expect from sleeping and travelling in a camper van. All I know is that I want more and more of that type of travel. In fact, as I write this today I was actually meant to be travelling to Scotland to embark on a similar trip, exploring Scotland’s Outer Hebrides by campervan but cancelled with the hope of rescheduling some time in Spring of 2017. If you are thinking of visiting Iceland, just do it! Your eyes will be in disbelief of what will be before them BUT they will thank you! From ice lagoons, amazing waterfalls, glaciers, beautiful mountain peaks and depending on when you go, from midnight sunsets to northern lights. Iceland is truly magical! Lets we forget the Blue Lagoon?!

7. NORWAY	In my introduction, I stated that I am not keen about being put to be put in a “niche” box. I love an adventure as much as I love a city escape. I love hiking and love mountain views and the fact that half the time it forces you to let go of your attachment gadgets, social media, partly because there is no reception so you forced to experience what is before you without sharing it on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat. It’s for your eyes only – or your camera too if you can’t resist. The fiancé and I embarked on another road trip that saw us explore Bergen before road tripping to Odda before heading to take on a 22km hiking and camping in the mountains to set our sights on Trolltunga. O.M.G the views!!! Posts to come soon, I promise!
I have a somewhat rocky relationship with Israel, partly because of the Israel-Palestinian conflicts over there. Some of you may know from previous trips and posts that my fiancé is Israeli so we discuss what is going on in Israel a lot! Every day! He has family over there so this means that there will be plenty more trips to Israel. I also hope in my lifetime I get to see a two-state solution come to fruition. Like John Kerry said, “the two-state solution is the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.” I truly believe that. Anyway leaving politics behind. We were back in Israel this year because Igal’s mother was hospitalised, so it wasn’t a leisurely trip. It was a fairly short trip, which had me visit for a couple of days, leaving Igal behind as I had to get back to work again. We managed to squeeze in a trip to Jerusalem as well as exploring a few parts of Tel Aviv that I hadn’t seen much of the last trip to Tel Aviv. So more posts to come on Israel. I may even let Igal to a guest post from a local’s perspective.	8. ISRAEL
9. GERMANY	Another repeat trip in Germany. I have shared a couple of posts my visits in Germany. This time I went back to combine a weekend getaway with wedding celebrations in Dusseldorf. My friend was tying the knot in November and went to bear witness of their love and wish them well on this beautiful adventure of a lifetime.
Oh, Venice! The last time I was there was with my younger sister. Two excited explorers in the heat of the summer of 2011. A totally different experience to visiting with a lover. Experiencing Venice when it’s wrapped in a fog, adds a sense of mystery to an already charming and magical city. Hearing the gondoliers singing before appearing from out of the thick fog. Waking up from slumber from your very own apartment(well it was ours for the weekend!). I was amazed at how I was still able to explore some of the alleyways from memory of my Venice visit in 2011. Let’s just my lover and I will be putting Venice on repeat for 2017. Before that, I will be sharing pictures from our explorations as soon as I finish editing them.	10. ITALY

Exploring and Visiting The UK

Travelling doesn’t just mean seeing international cities. Travel can and should include your backyard. So, that means more explorations of London. This year’s backyard explorations included Liverpool for one my friend’s 30th birthdays. Exploring Swindon and Oxford because of work. We also ventured out to Durdle Doord for a little hiking and camping. You have to add Dorset’s Jurassic Coast to your travel list for 2017, it is absolutely stunning! I shared a couple of pictures earlier this year, with a few more to come.

Not Giving Up On A Work-Life Balance

Even though it may seem like I travel a lot, it’s always hard to maintain a great work live balance when work involves staying in a hotel four out of 5 work days a week. Yes, on the outset it may seem lovely and exciting but it is actually tiresome, lonely and boring being away from friends, family and partners. It takes work coordinating diaries so you are both in the same place at the same time as both Igal and I have jobs that involve a lot of travel away from home. It’s funny, but we now have to coordinate the one day in the week we work from home. I am trying not to give up on having some balance. Aside from that, I am currently on an exciting project. I can blab about it because its publicly known that the company I work for is working in partnership with Williams F1.Working at on the Williams F1 project, I have rekindled my love for F1 racing, which I used to watch when I was younger but somehow stopped. I still kept the love for fast cars well intact, though. You may have seen some of my posts in recent months. I have had the pleasure of meeting Bottas, Massa on the open days Williams F1 had, as well as learning all about what goes into these races. If you are an F1 fan, Williams has an amazing museum with all their cars throughout the years of their racing history. Nothing gets your heart racing than the sound of roaring engine. If you haven’t of the amazing projects that Williams has been a part of….dare I mention Bond: Spectre??…Go check them out!

After four years of practising forever. We have decided to take the plunge…He asked and I said yes! We have yet to set a date yet. All I know is that the knot will be tied sometime next year. More on that in the future.

Kölner Dom | Cologne Catherdral

Milan has the Duomo di Milano, Barcelona has Gaudi’s cathedral. Cologne has also been holding its cards close to its heart for it has the Kolner Dome. Awe inspiring and just magnificent. Stand in front of it and you get a sudden case of “honey I shrunk the kids” as its just huge! So huge in some parts it looks as though its heading for the heavens as parts of it disappear into the clouds on foggy days. Cologne Cathedral can be seen from almost any point in the city. In fact we were able to see it from the motor way miles and miles away driving into Cologne from Dusseldorf.

I always find that with each of the cathedrals that I have visited if there is quite an elaborate design in the architecture on the outside of the cathedrals its always understated on the inside and the opposite if its very detailed on the inside. That is exactly how I have found some of the Cathedrals I have seen in Italy, Croatia and Germany. Kolner Dome is very understated on the inside and its amazing how a building is still standing since the foundations were laid in 1248 to celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The cathedral has so much rich history and has managed to survive world war bombings. It still has beautiful stained glass windows and one of them still in its original position dating back to 1260. There is also a shrine of the Three Holy Kings(St Ursula and St Geron along with their fellow martyrs) weighing 300kg.

Having gone inside and looked around I had totally forgot the height of the church when I mistakenly convinced my friend to go up the tower at the very top. Thank the Lord Jesus I was sensible and wore flats because I would have been cursing myself taking on the 533 steps to get to the very top up some spirally and very narrow stairs that left my legs feeling far more wobblier than jelly, but what made up for it were the views from the top. Also knowing that I was working the glutes made the torturous trip a little more bearable – who says you cannot exercise while on holiday? The weather wasn’t that great but you could still see for miles. The climb up also gives you access to the bell chambers which are also a ridiculous size that I wonder how they got those things up there when they didn’t have modern cranes(I guess you can also ask the same for the pyramids – a toast to a beautiful minds of those that have come before us). One of the bells is apparently the largest freely swinging church bell in the world and weighs 24 tonnes! There is also a treasury on site which has relics going back to the 4th Century including holy relics.

This is definitely another city in Germany other than popular cities like Berlin that you need to see and of course the lovely Dusseldorf. Climbing up the towers of the church will only cost you 3 Euros. Is that all I hear you ask? Yes! Because you will work your little legs off for the rest! A word to the wise, don’t turn up 6 inch heels like one lady I spotted, you will be very very sorry and possibly in tears. It’s like going up the London Shard in high heels or climbing the Eiffel Tower in crazy heels. Plain mad!

Travel Confessions | Burg Kronberg

Travelling between cities in Germany couldn’t be easier. Leaving my hotel bed to taxi it to Dusseldorf station at a 5 o’clock arrived with enough time to get some much needed coffee. Met shortly by my friend who had arrived at the platform complaining of pillow deficiency having hit the snooze one too many times that he woke up at the time his taxi was collecting him from home.

We parted ways at Frankfurt airport station as he was heading for Mainz while I was heading to Kronberg. Booking for intercity train can be done in advance so you can quickly board your train without queuing for tickets. I booked my ticket from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt online and just had my friend reserve seatting so we can sit together. Dusseldorf also has great links to other cities. You can also catch the train into Paris from as well as go to Munich and Cologne which we drove to on my visit.

I love transportation in Europe, because in some parts it is just as good as London if not better in some cases and way way cheaper than the rip off we have to deal with in London. I am off to Newcastle soon and my train ticket is about the same as I would spent on a weekend European city break, but that’s a story for another time. After arriving in Frankfurt, taking the S4 line from Frankfurt, within minutes I was in Kronberg. A few steps from the station I could see the Burg Kronberg perched up hill. I had no idea Germany was this hilly. I was told that there wasn’t much to see in the city but determined to prove the reviews wrong. My mistake!

Apparently Kronberg is more of a tourist town so arriving in the off season like I did you will find it has fallen into hibernation. It appeared to be in hibernation when I arrived as most stores were closed. That didn’t stop me from finding my own joy playing football(okay, a kick around) with the youngsters outside the mini square in Berliner Platz before heading for a nice hot chocolate with banana crepe at Giola’s cafe. A German speaking Italian who can also count English among the languages that seemed to effortlessly roll off his tongue. After taking refuge from the drizzle outside it was time to move on and see the rest if this this sleepy yet quaint little town. I came across this beautiful church hidden in the back of their main street with the retail shops, St Peter and Paul church.

The main attraction here is Burg Kronberg (Kronberg Castle) which was perched up high with a less than obvious entry to the street leading to its entrance. Walking passed the cobbled street, having had two cars stop to offer me greetings took me by surprise. Its not everyday I have this much attention in a new city. Maybe I should start charging a few? Having managed to find my way to Burg Kronberg I was so disappointed to find it closed. The museum right next to it was closed too. I walked up hills to get there and not even a squirrel to greet me at the top.

I thought to myself that I had come this way I was going to see if I can find some to help me. I pushed the little door on the medieval gate open. To my surprise it was open! My first thought was that I hope I am not faced with Canines otherwise all lady like walking would be abandoned and I was going to be sprinting out of there quicker than Usain Bolt or possibly go all Jackie Chan and climb the walls out of there. It was quiet as I approached the tower within the grounds. Built between 1220 and 1230, its a beautiful building that has seen its share of better and worst days of history gone by and yet it stands. Admiring the intricate designs on the small doors surround the building, one thought that came to mind was that this building was built for midgets because of the little doors, many small and short doors I came across and I have never known Germans to be this short. It suddenly donned on me that I had the place to myself! I finally found my castle! All that was waiting for was for me to mark my spot and claim it mine mine mine! If I wasn’t heading back to London in a few days I would have, between that and the fear of being someone’s girlfriend in a German prison was enough of a chilling thought to stop my claim to monarchy and being queen of my own very own castle. Leaving the grounds with no one to give me a tour, I managed to contact my friend when I got back to the hotel to translate the sign on the entrance which said something to the effect of do not enter…or enter at your own risk – due to the refurbishment and maintenance currently taking place on the premises. I guess it explains all the drilling coming from behind the walls and cement that was lying around the place. Oh well is was too late by then. I still managed to take some pictures! Plus more of the city surroundings.

From some of the pictures I have seen, there is also a secret garden which looks so beautiful in the sunnier months. Hopefully I will return to take pictures of the inside during tourist season? Will see.

Love Locks On Hohenzollern Bridge In Cologne Germany

This Friday, Valentine’s day is upon us once again(it’s happens every year you know!). In my recent trip to Germany I passed through Cologne and while exploring my friend showed me Cologne’s Love Locks Bridge after a visit to Kolner Dome. Germany is not known as a romantic destination so I was taken by surprise seeing all the beautiful locks on the Hohenzollern bridge. It appears the trend from Rome’s Milvian Bridge on the Tiber not only reached the Parisian Pont de l’Archevech on the Seine but made its way to Cologne as well.

As trains rumble over the Hohenzollern bridge so do thousands of hearts as row after row of padlocks decorate the stretch across the river with messages of love. Various shapes and colours of padlocks all engraved with names and dates of marriages, engagements combined add up to some 40,000+ padlocks hanging on what is now Germany’s Love Locks Bridge or perhaps the bridge of love as I call it.

Considering the tradition in Cologne only started in 2008 the number of locks left here has grown and to 2 tons in weight, and has been weighing heavily on the hearts of many local officials who questioned how long this tradition can be sustained for. After much protest from lovers in the city they have now decided that it will continue into the foreseeable future.

Well love is all around us so its not a surprise that this charming tradition has gone Trans-Atlantic. As proof of everlasting love for couples, this tradition of locking in their love on the bridges around the would has now taken to places as far as Latvia and China!

Romance is not just restricted to the so the called “most romantic” city in the world aka Paris or Rome depending on who you ask. Walking on the bridge in Cologne you can’t help but read all the inscribed writings on the locks, its so sweet and heartwarming. It’s beautiful to see, whether you are in love or not.
