It may already be obvious that Verona is one of my favourite places to visit, if my recent post on things to do in Verona are anything to go by. In this post I am going to hopefully inspire you to the coolest and best day trips from Verona to amazing cities and towns. Some you may have heard of and some new ones.

As I have said before that you can book cheap flights to Verona so it makes for a great place to land in as it offers easy access if you are travelling to Lake Garda as well as Venice and many other cool towns worthy of exploring in Verona. So, if you are planning a trip to Italy‘s Verona, the places below are also within reach and can be easily added to your Italian Itinerary.

The beauty of exploring Italy is that trains are fairly easy to navigate. Making it quick and easy to reach lots of world-class places close to Verona. Below are some of my favourite and the best day trips you can take from Verona.

Once you have explored all the cool museums in Verona and the palaces its time to get on the train and check out nearby cities and towns. You can easily catch the train from Verona for day trips in addition you can also use coaches like Flixbus. Verona to Venice Day Trip

The full-day trip to Venice departing from Verona is surely a busy day praising and exploring the beautiful city Venice has to show. You can simply buy tickets at Verona station to travel to Venice and back, Venice is just an hour away on a high-speed train as Venice is tiny.

The Floating City is something more than canals and Carnival, it has made up of busy markets and elegant glass factories. If you do little planning you can easily see important landmarks in a day trip tour from Verona to Venice.

• Once you reached to Venice, a beautiful bridge will greet you and take you to the lagoon center. You can discover the ancient master gondoliers and get to know this city with a walking tours and scenic gondola ride.
• Explore the artistic side of Venice with a walking tour and enjoy roaming around the charming alleys of the city, taking pictures of the beautiful scenery which considered unique in the world!
• Visit the most famous places like San Marco square aka St. Mark’s Square.
• In the afternoon you can visit the Doge’s Palace to get know-how about Venice’s royal history and its stunning architecture.
• If you want to enjoy nature and have some rest in evening you can also spend some time at  Public Gardens (Giardini Pubblici) which is just 15 –minutes’ walk away from St. Mark’s Square is the largest park in Venice

For your hunger control you can taste some special local food, I’ll suggest you to choose the Rialto food market and try traditional food (Cicchetti) with local wine. Also, note that the quality of food in restaurants in Venice is a lot better when you steer away from the popular and crowded streets.

Sirmione – Lake Garda

Day Trip To Lake Garda Towns From Verona

Verona is one of Italy’s most majestic Renaissance cities, you also have some pretty amazing towns on the nearby lake riveria that is Lake Garda.

• There are plenty of beautiful towns on Lake Garda that are with reach from Verona. I have had the pleasure of staying in both Desenzano, Sirmione, Malcesine and further north of the lake in Balzano. Do not underestimate the size of the lake! I would advise you to pick 1 or two towns to visit and spend the day in. You can easily visit two in a day providing you leave early. Desenzano, Sirmione, Peschiera, Lazise, Bardolino and Garda are all very easy to reach. You can also easily explore by ferry between the towns. • One of my favourites is Sirmione, a small lakeside village located right on the shore of Lake Garda. You can spend some time to explore the beauty of this town like medieval alleys, a famous palace and amazing views.
• Take the boat road to make more fun and enjoy panoramic views on the eastern and western shores of the lake. 

Famous local Food:

 Medieval Walled Town Day Trips From Verona By Train Or Bus

If you think you’ve already discovered Italy because you’ve been to Rome, Venice, Verona and Milan then you need to correct yourself because you have missed a lot of Italian beauty hidden in beautiful and medieval walled towns. The huge defensive walls have been made to protect against anything from the people of the walled city’s perceived threat. Below are the four medieval walled towns within the very easy reach day trip from Verona within an hour or 2 by train.

• Soave

Firstly the bus or train from Verona to Soave will approximately take 45 minutes from Verona Stradone Scipione Maffei to Soave. Soave is a walled city of great charm famed all over the world for its prestigious white wine. Explore the Scaliger walls and the castle, you can have a short view of the hall of the bodyguards.

The beautiful street full of colored houses lines provides an antique look of this town. If you enjoy a bit of hiking you can reach the top of Mount Tenda where you can see Soave’s medieval castle. You will learn many geological and historical facts of this town by visiting its surroundings. When choosing your restaurant in Soave, there is one worthy of a visit in the historic center called Corso Vittorio Emanuele, where you find simple eateries and nice food shops

Desenzano

• Castelfranco Veneto

Then move to the monument of the middle Ages: the cutest Castelfranco Veneto. It will take 1 h 10 minutes (Frecciarossa and Regionale) and from 1 h 30 minutes (Regionale Veloce and Regionale) to Castelfranco Veneto. The town is known for being the birthplace of Giorgione, he was a famous artists of the 16th century so you shouldn’t miss to see Giorgione’s House. At its heart, the town’s cathedral, the Duomo, which sits behind a row of statues opposite the town hall. 

Duomo is a 18^th century building presenting Catholic architecture designed by Francesco Maria Preti and which shows work by Paolo Veronese, Jacopo Bassano and many other artists. Inside the duomo there are lot of nice works, along with a wonderful Madonna masterpiece by Giorgione. If you get a chance to visit this town in September, then you are lucky because in this month this town holds a medieval fair. For Lunch Break in the middle of the day, you can find several bars and restaurants around the historic center and surroundings streets where you can have delicious meals and for fast food, you can go with takeaway pizza option in your hand and enjoy it walking around by the walls.

• Cittadella

Cittadella is a beautiful walled town perfectly between Padua, Venice, Verona and Vicenza and it’s considered one of the most favourite town in northern Italy. It takes about 1 hour (Frecciarossa and Regionale) and from 1 h 20 min (Regionale Veloce and Regionale) to Cittadella from Verona.  The surrounding wall has been restored and is 1,461 meters (4,793 ft) in circumference with a diameter of around 450 meters (1,480 ft). There are four gates that roughly correspond to the points of the compass. The important tourist attraction of Cittadella is a tour of the ramparts, the rampart walk provides great views down onto the medieval town centre. Duomo di Cittadella is the main Roman Catholic Church in the centre of the town of Cittadella. There is a Museum of Religious Art in the bell-tower also worth checking out.

• Monselice

This is a picturesque small town in the north-eastern Veneto region of Italy. Its almost 114 kilometers from Verona you can travel by bus or by train to get there. A gorgeous medieval town where the Venetian noblemen used to holiday every summer. The air and landscape are alive. This place doesn’t have a lot of places to eat, still, you can find some bars which offer sandwiches and rolls. There is also a restaurant in in Piazza Mazzini, it’s a large open space with views up to the Rocca.

It also has the Torre Civica, a clock tower, and the Biblioteca Comunale. Just a little distance away, there is the castle, the Castello. This castle can be visited between April and November on guided tours. Via del Santuario you can continue your journey and visit the next spot Villa Nani Mocenigo. It is a 16^th century villa and you can explore the beautiful statues standing along the wall as it’s a private property so the inside visit can be done on request because its not open for all public.

Day trip duration: 10-15 hours (depends on which town you want to visit)

Verona To Milan Day Trip

While not exactly super close its possible to do a day trip to Milan from Verona and vice versa. My only advice is to book the fast train in advance. Make sure you are on the early train and be sure to avoid the slow regional train. Check Omio as that will provide you with train journey duration. While you can do this as a day trip, its a bit long-winded and I would advise you to just stay overnight and explore the beautiful city’s Duomo, museums and theatres at a leisurely pace.

1 Roman Theatre Archeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum at the Roman Theatre was opened in 1924 in the former monastery of Gesuati, which was built in the late 14th century behind the theatre. The Archaeological Museum at the Roman Theatre, in one of the most appealing and archaeologically ideal locations in Verona, is a perfect symbol of a city museum. Located on the other side of the Adige River from the main part of town, Teatro Romano is well worth heading out of the main part of town for.

What to see at Theatre Archeological Museum?

This is much more than just a Roman theatre – there is a great museum showcasing some excellent artifacts and you are afforded some wonderful views over the city from the top of the site. Drop in to the church on the site while you are here. It’s in the process of being restored but lovely none-the-less. About 600 works of art are displayed in the museum and some 150 more can be seen displayed within the external cloister and the Theatre area whereas some thousand pieces are preserved in store-rooms.

How to Get Roman Theatre Archeological Museum

The Roman Theater and Archaeological Museum are located just across the Adige River from the historic center of Verona. These sights are easily approachable on foot or via public transportation by crossing the Ponte Pietra Bridge.  Located: Rigaste Redentore 2, 37129, Verona, Italy

2 Museum of Castelvecchio

Castelvecchio is a castle in Verona, northern Italy. It is the most important military construction of the Scaliger dynasty that ruled the city in the middle Ages. Castelvecchio was built in the 1350s by Cangrande II and it gets little damaged by Napoleon and during WWII bombings. After that the museum was completely renovated and recondition by known Italian architect Carlo Scarpa.

This is a large size museum with a nicely display of early renaissance art. The fortress was made to protect the family from rivals and to give them enough time to escape. The Castelvecchio Museum is appealing to both medieval art and contemporary architect enthusiasts. The palace was used to stored military arms and munitions in the 1400s. The artifacts are perfectly placed and labeled on each floor so you don’t see them as a clutter of mix items.

What to see at Castelvecchio Museum?

The collections of the Castelvecchio Museum include paintings, sculptures, jewelry, ceramics, and antique weaponry from the Middle age to the 18th century. Museum outside is like a fairytale: colors, silence of water or noise of the waves. Sculptures from the 12th to the 15th century are presented on Ground Floor. A lot of sensational paintings by Pisanello, Jacopo and Giovanni Bellini, Pieter Paul Rubens, Vittore Carpaccio, Andrea Mantegna and many others famous artist are displayed on 1^st and 2^nd floor. The museum also features an interesting collection of weapons. This stop not to be missed for fan of Italian art. The museum also features a compelling collection of weapons. There are almost 500 Sculptures and bronzes, nearly 2500 paintings and 300 pieces of weapons.   

How to Get Castelvecchio Museum

Verona, one of the main city in Italy’s northern region of Veneto, is well connected by train to Milan, Florence, and Venice. The Castelvecchio Museum, located in the city’s historic center, you can reach by s walk from the main train station.  Location Address: Corso Castelvecchio 2, 37121, Verona, Italy

3 Museum of Frescoes

The convent complex of San Francesco al Corso dates to the 13th century. In 1935, Antonio Avena, director of the Civic Museums, opened to the public the so-called “Tomb of Juliet“. This site, according to myth, is where the sarcophagus holding the bodies of Romeo and Juliet was saved, and it generally became a tourist attraction. The museum mainly houses numerous frescoes from the Middle Ages and modern times which have been separated from the walls of palaces and churches around the city between the 19th and 20th century; in the garden there is a lapidary with a collection of inscriptions and sculptures of Verona’s origin between the 10th and the 18th century.

During the excavations in the Adige River area the underground level contains a collection of Roman amphorae from the first century B.C. Antique and latest lapidary material (both architectural and sculptural) is stored in the courtyard, pending the insertion of a lapidary exhibition. The wall paintings of ancient Thera are famous frescoes find by Spyridon Marinatos on the digging of Akrotiri.

You will find the fascinating Serbian medieval visual art under the roof of one small museum. In their technique and style the paintings are vital piece of study and grab the attention of archaeologists, artist historians, zoologists, botanists, and chemists. 4 Maffeiano Lapidary Museum

The Lapidario Maffeiano is one of the ancient public museums in Europe established in 1738. It carried a huge collection of stone carvings and inscriptions, mostly Greek, Etruscan, and Roman. This museum presents the 30 years’ hard work of Maffei as he gathered hundreds of inscriptions by himself. Some of their tombstones still in the same position and shows real paints. 

What to see at Lapidario Maffeiano Museum?

This museum is mostly visited by specialist, archaeologist, students and art scholars. Plenty of inscriptions, reliefs, and sculptures are placed at the entrance and two main rooms.it has two floors and a courtyard. The experience of walking in the courtyard under the sky, where lot of writings are arranged is amazing. On the second floor there is a display of roman sculpture. In early ages the Maffeiano was the most visited Museum of Verona for the foreign travelers

How to Get There Lapidario Maffeiano Museum

Lapidario Maffeiano is situated between the walls of Piazza Bra and Castelvecchio. This museum is very easily accessible. You can reach there by bus, Taxi or by foot as it’s close to largest piazza in Verona. The closest stations to Piazza Bra are: Largo Div. Pasubio and Palazzo Pirelli. Outside of the station there are plenty of busses. You can take line 11, 12. There should be a bus every 5 minutes or so. Location Address: Piazza Bra’ 28, 37121, Verona, Italy

5 Palazzo Della Ragione / Galleria D’Arte Moderna

Galleria D’arte Moderna is a public art gallery representing modern art having a large collection of paintings and sculptures. This museum is in the same building as the Torri dei Lamberti tower. You will get the combined ticker of tower and museum in an approximate €5. I’ll suggest you to visit this place if you have at least 2 to 3 hours because this is something which really needs time to examine the dark Italian art

What to see at Palazzo Della Ragione / Galleria D’Arte Moderna

The great work of Italian artists during the era of 1840 to 1940 has been displayed here. The huge collection of sculptures and paintings of famous artist like Giorgio Morandi and Umberto Boccioni are the great attraction for the lovers of modern art. This gallery also displayed old photographs of Verona along with paintings. Different programs for families and young one are available. Every year a variety of decorative and historical art has been displayed on exhibitions.

How to Get There?

The gallery is in the Palazzo della Ragione in Verona’s city center, at the corner of the old market. You can get access of this location by foot from many other places in the center, and also local buses as well as hop-on-hop-off tour buses made different spot in the city center too.  Location Address: Vicolo Volto Due Mori, 4 | Palazzo della Ragione, Verona.

6 Museum of Natural History

The Civic Museum of Natural History is located in the reputable palazzo Pompei. This is one of most important buildings in Verona from historical prospective. The Natural History Museum of opened in 1853. It plays a vital role in scientific research and in the publication of essays. This is a perfect place to take kids. This ticket cost includes 4.5 euros and I am sure it will value your money. You will find this museum interesting for all ages. The scientific material mostly gathered by Museum researchers and by many biologists in five centuries.

What to see at the Museum of Natural History?

You will find here different scientific sections devoted to the study of minerals and rocks, zoology, and botany. One of main room is the assigned to the fossils of Bolca which includes specimens of more than 250 species of animals and 200 species of vegetal. This museum consists of 16 exhibition rooms, library, storage rooms and its offices. The area of Veronese mountains is well known all over the world due to its beauty.

Palazzo Pompei is one of the most important building built in Renaissance style.To reach to this museum you can use different bus line options near Palazzo Pompei are: 11, 70, 72, 73. 7 Museo Della Radio

This place is surely not of everyone taste but if you have interest in history of communication, telegraphy and television production you must visit this museum. This is small museum located in the basement of ITT Galileo Ferraris. The museum is devoted to Guglielmo Marconi, an inventor of radios having huge collection of radios.

What to see at Museo Della Radio?

In the basement you can see the collection of radios, TVs and opera. The collection is mostly European makes and models like table top, floor model and bakelite radios, oddly shaped transistor radios, tubes, horns, crystal sets, phonograph you will rarely see.

How to Get There?

It’s located in the basement of ITT Galileo Ferraris, just cross the street from Tomba di Giulietta. The closest stations to Istituto Tecnico Galileo Ferraris are Tribunale and Via Del Fante and you can use bus stop nears  ITT Galileo Ferraris are 102, 72, 90, 98. You can use these station by reaching at main and by 4 to 5 minutes’ walk you will be at Museo Della Radio. Location Address: Via del Pontiere, 40, 37122 Verona VR, Italy.

Historical Sites And Cool Things To Do In Verona

Verona Arena

It is located in Piazza Bra, this first-century amphitheater is Italy’s third-largest. Verona Arena is an open-air Roman amphitheater that’s the third largest structure considered in the world. It was built in 30 AD. It has a capacity for 30,000 spectators. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a summer evening. There are different games shows held like Roman Ludi as well as the Verona theatre festivals hosted every year. It’s still in great condition considering the thousands of years it’s been around. With this tour of Verona Amphitheatre, you can explore the beautiful arena in all its glory.

Palazzo Maffei

Palazzo Maffei is a historical palace in Verona, northern Italy, on the north-western side of Piazza delle Erbe. The palace has existed in this location since the fifteenth century, but in 1469 Marcantonio Maffei decided to rebuild it by adding a third floor.  The three-story facade of the palace is in Baroque style. The front roof was designed as a railing with six statues: Hercules, Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Apollo and Minerva. It represents a Unicom in the panorama of the city architectural style.

Domus Mercatorum

The Domus Mercatorum / Casa dei Mercanti is a medieval edifice in Piazza delle Erbe and among the cool places to visit in Verona. During the middle Ages it was home to the Casa dei Mercanti, the guild of the city’s merchants Wikipedia. An amazing places to visit for history buffs and closely to the House of Juliet. Initially this building was built by wood in 1210, after that in 1301, it was made of stone by Alberto 1 della Scala. You will see a large porch with different colors of arches and columns on the ground floor of its building.

Churches & Cathedrals  

Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore

This gorgeous Romanesque basilica was built in the 12th century. The basilica is very large and with beautiful detail and design. The Basilica of San Zeno is considered very important building in Verona from a religious point of view, especially for its remarkable architecture. Inside the Basilica is truly beautiful such as stained glass rose window, crafted bronze doors, Renaissance frescoes and a non-forgettable main triptych by Andrea Mantegna. The floor is decorated in grey and peach color tiles and ceiling also shows a wonderful tile-work.

Basilica di Santa Anastasia

The church of St. Anastasia is from the late 13th century and is a perfect example of Italian Gothic architecture. It’s a very beautiful basilica with a very decorative ceiling, statues and artworks around the interior. The Basilica has three large passages held by 12 pillars in red Veronese marble. A breathtaking frescos paintings and carvings won’t let you disappointed in €3 entry ticket which also audio guide as well. The floor is beautifully designed in various patterns of marble – white & black – based on the Dominican Habit. One of the marvelous frescos – St George and the Princess by Pisanello. Many the great work is the effort of Della Scala family, who ruled in Verona during 13th to the late 14th century.

Chiesa di San Fermo

San Fermo Maggiore is located on the banks of the Adige River near Ponte Navi presenting Romanesque structure. This church is unusual because of its beautiful carved wood ceiling shaped like a boat. This beautiful church on two levels and so well preserved. Plenty of beautiful sculptures and paintings with a peaceful atmosphere inside.

Art & Museums

Museo di Castelvecchio

Castelvecchio was built in the 1350s by Cangrande II. The museum space was designed by 20th century architecture making it mix of Gothic and modern. The exhibition hall had a great collection of sculptures, jewelry, epigraphs, frescoes, painting, ceramics and weapons from 12-18 century. It shows a great variety of arms and armors. This museum was damaged by Napoleon and WWII bombing and then re-constructed by Carlo Scarpa. You can enjoy the stunning views of the city from the top of this museum. With this city walking tour, you pass through Castelvecchio and many other city attractions in Verona.

Museo Archeologico

The Museum is located within a convent built in the 15th century the archaeological museum has a large collection of Roman artifacts.  Built into the hillside overlooking the Roman theater, the entrance is from the embankment, where you can also find the ticket office. Entrance to the museum costs 4,50 Euros. There is an interesting collection of Greek vases, sculptures, glass objects and utensils for daily use.  You can tour the museum with an informative guide on the Roman Empire and its influence on the world beyond Rome.

Galleria d’Arte Moderna Palazzo Forti

This Museum features modern works of art from the collection of Achille Forti & other major patrons. This museum is in the same building as the Torri dei Lamberti tower and combined ticket €5. Along with sculpture and paintings, the gallery also presents ancient photographs of Verona that offers visitors a new perspective on the city. 

Food & Wine In Verona

When it comes to food, Verona is blessed with the delicious food of northern Italy and tasting some of the Italian famous dishes should be must on your list of things to do in Verona! Verona has a number of admirable architectural squares and Piazza Delle Erbe is one of the famous not to miss Verona. It may consider one of the biggest square in Verona. This diamond-shaped piazza is located in the middle of the historic centre. The architecture is really remarkable. There are lot of attractions nearby including Case dei Giudici, Torre Lamberti and the Palazzo Maffeia. This building served as the main forum during the Roman Empire. There are market stalls and fruit markets for tourists to explore in this busy square. Right by the market you will find various restaurants, cafes, fountains and marble statues.

Juliet’s House (La Casa di Giulietta)

The 13th-century building designated as the house of Shakespeare. Its Located in middle of Verona’s historic center, the Gothic-style house has beautiful stoned balcony where the young couple stand and announce their love. Arche Scaligere

The Scaliger Tombs is a group of five Gothic monuments in Verona, dedicated to the influential Scaliger family. This family ruled over Verona throughout the 13th and 14th centuries. The Scaliger Tombs are free to enjoy and open every day of the year. The tombs are located in a court outside the church of Santa Maria Antica, separated from the street by a wall with iron grilles.

The Roman theatre of Verona is an ancient Roman theatre in Verona, northern Italy. This theatre was made in approximately in the same time as the Roman arena after Roman Empire Fall. This semi-circular theatre is used for open-air events and concerts in summer. It’s a perfect vantage point to take panoramic pictures of the skyline around the city. Beautiful Bridges In Verona

Ponte Scaligero (Ponte di Castelvecchio)

The Castel Vecchio Bridge or Scaliger Bridge is a fortified bridge in Verona. The segmental arch bridge featured the world’s largest span at the time of its construction. You can climb the stairs and get a great view of the river and the surrounding area. Lots of artwork and statues to see and very little barrier between you and the displays. Literally you can stand inches from a 600 year old fresco and statues. It’s a three-arch bridge that spans the Adige River. The upper part has been made of red brick and the lower part is made of white marble. 

Ponte Pietra

At the northern edge of the city centre, this bridge is an old treasure to the Italians’ love of their artistic heritage. The view from the bridge of the river Adige are very photogenic. It was blown by German troops and rebuilt by stones in 1950’s. This is the historic bridge that is a must-see whenever you visited Verona and close to many attractions like Roman theatre and Torre dei Lamberti.

Right in the heart of Verona and along Mazzini, via Stella and Corso Portoni Borsari where you can find boutiques for designer labels and other high street brands. Shopping in Verona is a treat, whether hunting for desserts or antiques or Italian souvenirs to bring back home with you. Additional places to shop in Verona include:

The nearest airport to Verona?

The Verona Airport (VRN), “Valerio Catullo”, is the closest and it is located in a nearby in Villafranca. It’s about 10 kilometers from Verona and there is a shuttle service that runs every 20 minutes and takes you to the train station in Verona for 6 euros. Getting Around In Verona  – Public Transport 

Verona is very easy to explore as most attractions and things to see and do in Verona are close to each other and can be covered on foot. For those who want to experience the public transport, the city provides a very good transport system to move around in city. ATV bus service is more reliable bus service which move around throughout the city. You also have hop-on hop-off tours in Verona. 

Consider Getting A Verona Card!

Verona Card is an all-inclusive city pass. It offers free or reduced entry to the city main museums, monuments and churches. You can travel with ATV city bus as well. The Verona card is the perfect way to fully explore the city. It includes all the must-see attractions, plus free travel on public transport.

The cost of a Verona Card is 20 euro for 24 hours and 25 euro for 48 hours after the first validation.
