Throwing light on History

Laying Stones

The history is traced back to the 12th century when in 1135, a small structure was built here. Several buildings on the island followed the trail. There are some clues which suggest that the island was inhabited in the Neolithic era (4000-2500BC). It may have been under influence of continental merchants who used it as a trade port named “Ictis” for Cornish tin.

Catholic Command

The fact is crystal clear that the Mount was gifted by Edward the Confessor to Norman abbey of Mont-Saint Michel. Over the next few years, they built a church at the place. The place remained under influence of the Monks till the place became a strategic base for Perkin Warbeck.

Military Period

After the dissolution of King Henry VII monasteries, the place was occupied by military governors. The Mount was later surrendered to Parliamentarian force and reached the command of St Aubyn by 1659. The place was owned by his descendant till the latter half of 20th century.

Entrusted To National Trust

The Mount was later on entrusted to the National Trust in 1954 who serves as its caretaker by the time. The castle is much popular with the tourists for its valuable treasure of books, its tidal clock, and the historic mummified cat. It hosts a model made out of champagne corks dedicated to the Mount.

Is St Michael’s Mount Worth A visit

The most treasured site of the Mount is monastic Lady Chapel that was later used as a drawing-room. The castle bricks hold multiple ancient barracks and museum rooms. Elizabeth terrace which is a stretch of late 19th century buildings is spread around the castle. Do not miss the vintage watchtower and cannons.

High and low tides are observed around the island. The sea waves do not touch Mount on neap tides. During the spring tides, the splash is higher. The water touches the Mount after 4 hours and 30 minutes of the start of the tide every fortnight.

There is a garden attached to the castle dusted with lilies and enchanting flowers. Island Café for cream tea is there for you to enjoy some tea by the shore of St Michael.

St Michael’s Mount Facts To Note

The Mount was a hub of the tin industry about 2000 years ago. During the 6th century, the place was considered to be sacred and a religious destination.

The Mount holds some memories of historic World War II when it was used as a refugee center against German intrusion. Bunkers can be located alongside the Mount.

The Mount has been captured behind the camera in some honor earned movies.  “James Bond” (1983), “Never Say Never Again” (1983), “Johnny English” (2003), and “Mariah Mundhi and the Midas Box “(2012) were posturized here. The Mount also served as Dracula Castle back in 1979 for film Dracula.

Things To Do In Newquay When It Rains

Lets face, summer in the UK is promised to no one. We have amazing weather at times and if you happen to be in Cornwall when the weather is good, thank the weather Gods and have a Cornish beer to celebrate. Either way Cornwall is beautiful even when its raining. So, if you happen to visit this beautiful spot of Cornish seaside when the weather isnt ideal. Here are a few things to do in Cornwall when it rains:

  • Take to the pubs for a nice hearty pub lunch.
  • Visit the tea rooms and drink tea matched with clotted cream on scorns.
  • Cornwall is home to many spas, indulge in a bit of pampering and forget about the rain outside. Perfect for those looking for things to do on days out in Cornwall for adults.

How To Get To Newquay And Getting Around

If you are aboutt 5 or even 6 hours drive from Cornwall then I would suggest you just drive to Cornwall. That way you can easily get around to all the beautiful sights and amazing beaches in Newquay. If that option isnt available, you can get to Cornwall or get to Newquay specifically, by train.

GWR operate the train services leaving from London Paddington. Trains from London to Cornwall take about 5 and half hours. You can also take the coach which takes about 9 hours! Its cheaper but takes a lot longer. There is also a sleeper train from London to Penzance. If you are traveling from Bath to Cornwall or even Bristol to Cornwall there are also daily trains from these cities too.

Once you arrive in Cornwall, there are rail networks in the county as well as bus services. I personally prefer having the option of having our car hence we drove the 5 hours from London to Cornwall. To check trains, buses and car options and times of services check out Omio which gives you times, dates and prices for each transport option.

Where To Stay In Newquay

There are plenty of options for where to stay in Newquay, whether you want to stay in a lovely holiday park like Treveller Holiday Park, a cool hotel with amazing sea views like the Legacy Hotel Victoria or Pentire Hotel or even the beautiful Atlantic Hotel with stunning views.

If you like the feel of a home away from home you can also rent a holiday home in Newquay,  or even an apartment with ocean views.

With Newquay being a popular town in Cornwall, there are a lot more options for accommodation than perhaps some of the other towns. Even so, there are about 560 hotels in Newquay, it’s still worth booking hotels well in advance as during the summer months they book out months in advance.

Stunning beaches, beautiful scenery, cool attractions, just a few reasons to visit Cornwall. Below are a few pictures of Cornwall to picture you to visit this beautiful part of the UK. Of course, Cornwall features among the gorgeous destinations in the UK perfect for weekend and holiday getaways. Last year my husband and I set off to explore the Coastline around Cornwall and had an amazing stay in out lovely Airbnb which came with stunning sea views. It made me look forward to waking up each morning and having coffee right by the window and watching fishermen go out for there catch of the day. Each evening when we came back from exploring and end the day with tea by the window I would see the boats come back.

We explored the beautiful open-air theatre that is Minach Theatre, we drove to Lands End, saw St Michael’s Mount, chilled out by many of the stunning beaches in Cornwall. Its sometimes hard to believe just how many beautiful beaches we have in the UK.

There are endless adventures to be had in Cornwall, from kayaking, scuba diving, hiking, rowing, beautiful farm visits, theatres, zoo, cool gardens like the Eden Project and dramatic coastlines that are just perfect for picnics. Below are a few pictures of Cornwall which I hope inspire you to visit and also lookout for more posts with more details about Cornwall, towns to visit in Cornwall, things to do in Cornwall and more!
