Staying In Old Centrum (Old Centre)

For where to stay in Amsterdam City Centre it has to be Old Centrum. If you’re looking for a neighborhood filled with world-renowned museums, high-end shopping areas, and spectacular entertainment and culture, then Old Centrum in Amsterdam is for you.

Old Centrum is Amsterdam’s City Centre district and the home of the famous Canal Ring, a historical site of more than 400 years.

Old Centrum is the most popular tourist destination in Amsterdam and hence is usually crowded. It draws crowds to its medieval architecture, museums, restaurants, shops and, of course, the infamous red light district.

The area also boasts the only floating flower market in the world, so it is definitely something you should at least brave the tourist crowds to view.

And you will want to partake of a canal tour and excursion or two along the Canal belt ring. Whether you are jetting off for quick Amsterdam breaks you can find more Amsterdam hotels in Old Centrum click here. For hotels near Red Light District click here.

Airbnb Alternatives – Heard of Vrbo?

A rental brand similar to Airbnb and under the Expedia brand. With the ever-changing cleaning fees and lack of customer service with Airbnb some renters’ experience, we have decided to update our posts with some options.

So, What Sets Airbnb and Vrbo Apart?

While both online platforms for holiday rentals provide options for short and extended stays and each possesses its own advantages, there exist five notable distinctions between them.

• Vrbo primarily focuses on entire home rentals.

• Airbnb boasts a larger inventory of listings.

• Vrbo typically offers more competitive pricing.

• Airbnb promotes swift review submissions.

• Vrbo excels in customer service.

Check out their rentals here from their USA site, UK Site and Canada Site if you are visiting from any other country click on whichever currency you prefer. The US and Canada links, show prices in dollars and the UK will show prices in pounds but you will still see the same listings for rentals.

Top Amsterdam Activities In One Day

Honestly, one day is too little for a city like Amsterdam, which has some of the time-consuming spots all across the neighborhood. To get started head towards the area called as Museum Square, to get started. By the way if you are in Europe and want to combine Amsterdam with other cool cities nearby I have the perfect combined itinerary that include London, Amsterdam and Paris or  Amsterdam, Paris and Brussels.

9 AM Rijkmuseum

If there is a landmark museum, known for safeguarding the ancient Dutch Culture intact, Rijkmuseum is the appropriate destination. The place holds masterpiece works from Johannes Vermeer, Frans Hals, and Rembrandt. Open to adults for 20 Euros, and the museum is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM on regular days. However, 3rd April to 28th August the museum is open till 9 PM on Fridays. As a visitor, you can skip the queue and purchase online tickets, costing 1 Euro lesser than the counter ticket. You can book the time blocks from 9h to 11h, 11h to 13h, 13h to 15h, and 15h to 17h. Museumkaart Holders and Amsterdam City Card users have exclusive booking benefits. The former cardholders have exclusive easy entry access, while the latter ones still require standing in queues.

11.30–12 PM Lunch

Exiting Rijkmuseum around this time may leave your stomach tickle for hunger. The museum square has some of the iconic eating hubs, and fine dines destinations, offering a classic Dutch platter for the taking. Try out classic restaurants such as Restaurant Floreyn for a traditional European Lunch or even the likes of Eetcafe Franz or even Le Restaurant Amsterdam. If you are up for dining with a little bit of history or guided tours then check out these food tours which also include private local chef to cook for you a lunch or dinner.

1 PM Van Gough Museum

Van Gough is a prominent name in Dutch history for some of his masterful and classic artworks. The museum in 2017 became amongst the most visited spots in the country. The demand and appreciation of Art in Amsterdam is high, where the museum has chosen all of his art collections and cool creative works. Currently, the only way to purchase a ticket to the museum is online, where adults will shell out 19 Euros and under 18 visitors are exempted. The operational hours are from 9 AM to 5 PM. However, the time surges during peak seasons, and advanced booking is the only way out. Using Museumkaart or even the city card will help to save a good booking time, but does not guarantee a slot.

3 PM Bloemenmarkt

A visit to the vibrant city of Amsterdam is incomplete without a visit to Bloemenmarkt. This is among the essential things to do in Amsterdam in 1 day. The market holds the distinction of being the only floating market in the world today. As far as the history of the market goes, flowers were bought via countryside canals. Today, however, things are stationary, and the florists prefer keeping things to stay in a single position.

There are about 15 florists, selling fresh flowers and bouquet collections. The market is known for selling seasonal flowers, and from time, they adapt to delivering flowers during non-winter months to selling Christmas trees in winters. Unique artifacts such as Wooden Tulips are sold throughout the year. If you want to take some away with you, do look out for Tulips, grown locally. Located over Singel River between Muntplein and Koningslplen, the spot holds a distinction of selling all but fresh flowers. Tourists would love to spend their time in the place, which is aesthetically pleasing by all senses.

Amsterdam is known for being a tourist-friendly city, is home to countless spots that can be toured. However, there are places such as museums, which requires entry pass and in some case, advanced online reservations. This, for a tourist, is a hassle, and unlike every time it takes to complete an online transaction, there are multiple city cards available with a slight difference. Here are the two different tickets available with the prices upfront.

More than 30 spots across the city are covered in the card policy, and a hop-on-hop-off tour is included as well. In terms of validity, the pass is valid for 12 months from initial purchase, and users have the option to use it whenever they prefer. Each of these comes with a digital guidebook, helping with time, itinerary, and the valuation of pass value. The house has played host to a lot of historical event in the post –Nazi era leading to the 2nd world war. Most notably of the museum-like house is “Anne’s Diary” which she wrote in the secret annex of the house before the hiding place was discovered by the Nazi. The diary became a world-famous historical book and has since being translated into at least 70 language, with many movie plot to its credit.

Take A Day Trip From Amsterdam To Zaanse Schans Windmills

Netherland is known all over the world for the numerous well-preserved historic Windmills.  This has made the location of this windmill “Zaanse Schans” on of the major tourist attractions in Amsterdam and Netherland as a country. Some of the windmills present in the Zaanse date as far back as 1574 and the building housing the mills have gone through series of modification and reinforcement.

The entire Zaanse Schans neighbourhood is a major tourist attraction as it also play host to eight (8) museum. This has lead to the overcrowding of the area with visitors and tourist from different part of the word. It is noted to attract over 14 million visitors annually.

The outdoor portion of the Zaanse Schans is open to view without payment, but opening times and entrance fee are applicable at each of the museums, workshops and windmills. Make sure you book tickets on the ever-popular Zaanse Schans tours before they sell out.

Experience Your First Taste Of A “Jenever” At Amsterdam’s Amsterdam’s Oldest Pub

You are likely to have heard of the House of Bols which was the first and biggest Dutch manufacturer of jenever. It now runs a cocktail & jenever tasting experience. Jenever is a juniper-flavored traditional Dutch liquor from which gin eventually evolved. While you’re in town, take the opportunity to go for a real jenever tasting and discover the liquor that is a big part of the local culture.

De Drie Fleschjes is one of the so-called brown cafes: those are traditional Dutch bars that have wooden interiors, a cozy feel, and a local audience. Once you walk into the small pub you will notice the many caskets of spirits. You can buy one in which case you will receive a key and will be able to bring your friends and family to sample liquor from that particular cask, but I hear the waitlist for those is really long.

When in Amsterdam I highly recommend you visit Amsterdam Noord, and during the holiday season that’s where you visit a large Amsterdam Christmas market. The week before Christmas you can shop the best Christmas gifts at Kromhouthal and taste some glühwein. If you’re after something less traditional the Funky Xmas Market at Westergas fabriek is your best bet. Designers, artists and other creatives sell their awesome creations to the public. The little Ice Village stalls have plenty of warm drinks, snacks, and food to warm you up after a funfilled tour.

Ice skating on the canals in Amsterdam the Netherlands in winter

Winter Ice Skating In Amsterdam

When cruising the canals in Amsterdam by tour is not possible then take to the ice rinks. The ancient city of Amsterdam is Blessed with a good number of ice skating rinks, which attract lots of tourist and visitors every winter. The skating rinks in the city open between 10am to 10pm, while a skate ticket cost 4-10 EUR depending on the rink in question. Skate of different sizes can be rented at various rinks at the cost of 5 EUR for a 2 hour ride.  Most notable of these skating rinks are;

  1. Ice skating in Amsterdam Canal; As winter sets in on Amsterdam, the surface of the carnals is converted into an ice skating rink. A little wooden bridge is raised over it. Once you ascend it, you will enjoy the amazing view of the Rijksmuseum in all its festive glory. It also offers a lovely spot for taking those pictures with friends. Tourist have to ascertain from the city authority if the canals are iced enough for skating, this is to avoid situations like falling through the thin ice.

Amsterdam canals offer a great and fun-filled place for ice skating.  The winters bring along enough frosty ice to freeze the canals, thereby making it a lovely spot for a skating rink. Some winters in the past have not produced enough frosty-cold for the canals to freeze. This should not dampen your mind as you can be rest assured that every winter in Amsterdam is definitely a skating season as lot of ice rinks pop up around the city.

  1. The historical Olympic Stadium, which was used for the Amsterdam Olympic, is also transformed into an ice rink over the winter months and gives you the perfect and beautiful skating rinks in the city.
  2. Go for ice skating on Museumplein: If you love ice skating, then Museumplein is the place to be during the winter season in Amsterdam. It is the best rink, where you can ice skate with the Rijks museum as a backdrop. The Ice Amsterdam period begins on 17th of November and stays until 3rd of February (dates here may vary slightly from year to year). It is Most prominent of the ice skating rink, and it is right in front of the famous iAmsterdam sign

Winter Parade Art Performance & Feast

The Winter Parade here might sound a bit weird, but it’s a thrilling weird experience. It is a mix of performance with food where diners/guest are seated across the length of a 120 meter long dining table. These diners are then served by waiters, who are actually walking (cat-walking) on that very same table. There are artists, singers, and musicians accompanied by food. Before I forget, it’s also set in a church. Sure you will agree that it an unusual but exciting experience. Participating in one of the activity may cost you close to 45 EUR.

Get Yourself Some Free Tulips

When Dutchies take down the Christmas decoration and put our Christmas tree on the curb to be collected, we cheer up our sad-looking houses with tulips. Most of you think tulips and The Netherlands go together in April and early May, when you can spot the amazing tulip fields, but the fields are meant for bulb production. The tulips for decoration are available roughly half of December until the end of February.

And if you visit Amsterdam in the 3rd weekend of January, you can even get a free bouquet of tulips on Dam Square during National Tulip Day. Everyone is allowed to pick a couple of tulips for a bouquet from a specially designed ‘garden’. If you are a lover of tuplips make sure you book yourself a place on the Keukenhof Garden tour to visit the tulip gardens. For additional tips on where to find tulips in Amsterdam, check out the post by Sam Meets World.

Try Dutch Winter Dishes

Oliebollen
Oliebollen are a typical dutch meal during winter, most especially during New Year’s Eve. Oliebollen are deep fried dough balls with a nice layer of powdered sugar. Oliebollen are sometimes taken with apple and raisins. You can simply buy oliebollen at any stalls all over the city or at bakeries. A bottle of champagne and a bag of oliebollen is the best way to usher in the new year

‘Snert’
Dutch winter isn’t complete to me without having home cooked split pea soup. When you leave it overnight (preferably outside when it freezes) we call split pea soup ‘snert’ and it tastes even better. It tastes like proper winter.

Fondue
Fondue is not typically Dutch, but we do have loads of fondue during the holiday season. It’s just perfect comfort food. And it goes without saying that you should go order some at Fondue & Fondue.

Amsterdam Light Festival

The Amsterdam Light Festival is one of the most prominent highlights of the winter months in Amsterdam.  This seasonal festival is held every year, mostly starting on 29th November and stretches into 20th January of the following year. The spectacular light installations along and on the canals is extremely beautiful and amazing that its bright and colorful lights is said to beam life into the city and leaves a lasting memory in the minds of tourist.

There are two common ways of enjoying a good view of the lightning works;  a boat tour in the waterways around the light festival would give one a panoramic view of the light installations from the slow-moving boat, or you can talk a walk around the city center where the light are on display for a closer perspective of the festival.

While the boat view will give you a more immersive and thrilling view, walking around the light-up city centre will give you a more personal effect to your view. During the walk you have the opportunity to meet people. It is a romantic and light-filled experience that will make you appreciate the historically rich city center. The artwork on display are uniquely picked annually by a strong committee of a talented artist.

Wheather In Amsterdam In Winter And Festive Period

The weather during the winter is cold and frosty. It gets so frosty that the Amsterdam canal gets fully iced. So Amsterdam looks like a fairy tale city, with snow on every roof and every space available. In December, the temperature is a little above the freezing point weather stands between 2-7 degrees Celsius, with about 12-13 rainy days. As the city proceeds into the new year, the weather temperature in January fluctuates between 1-6 degrees. It is imperative for visitors keep warm during winter in Amsterdam, so don’t forget your gloves and a warm headcover.  I share tips on what to pack for Amsterdam with tips on what to wear when visiting Amsterdam during winter. For additional tips make sure you pack a handy guide book for Amsterdam.

There are no two ways about it; Amsterdam glow in festive activities, stunning in white snow and bubbling with premium fun and historical activities during winter.

Where To Stay In Amsterdam

Amsterdam is such an amazing city and the canals really come alive in the evening when they are all lit up. Where you turn down is just as important to make the most of the city whether visiting Amsterdam for a weekend, one week or longer. There are plenty of amazing hotels in Amsterdam to choose from. I have also shared tips on the best areas to stay in Amsterdam which includes all the various areas in Amsterdam to help you decide where to stay in Amsterdam during your winter visit.

How To Get To Amsterdam

One of my favorite ways to check travel deals these days in addition to Expedia flight deals is looking at Omio. Omio shows trains, buses, taxis and flight details for a chosen destination from your city of origin. For example if I was leaving from London, Omio would show me options for travel to Amsterdam with options for EuroStar, coach services from Victoria in London to Flights from London airport on various flights leaving on the day I have chosen. Leaving me to choose the cheapest or best time option for when I want to travel.

You don’t necessarily have to do Paris, London, Amsterdam vacation package either as self-planning can be easily done.

After arriving in the morning, you will have plenty of time to relax and do a light exploring of the neighborhood. Visit the Jordaan and its surrounding galleries, shops and boutiques.

Where To Stay In Amsterdam

For tips on where to stay in Amsterdam, I have a detailed post on how to choose the best area to stay in Amsterdam. Where you are visiting and want to stay near tourist sights or want to be near markets, galleries or nightlife in Amsterdam.

Alternative Itineraries For London Paris & Amsterdam

If you don’t have 10 days you can also opt to do London, Paris Amsterdam in one week or also do a London and Paris itinerary in 6 days.

You can do 2 days in each city and then one day would be eaten up by travel and chill time between travel from one city to the other. So you can condense your trip into a week for sure.

Another alternative

You can also opt to do London Amsterdam then Paris or even starting your by way of a Paris, London and Amsterdam. Where you start will very much depending on where you land first and where you happen to get the best travel deal tickets.

EuroStar now runs new options to travel from Amsterdam to London and the other way round. As I mentioned above, if you only have one week, you can also opt to do tours to Amsterdam from London and some of these can also be a day trip to Amsterdam from London.

Again you have to book these early. The cheapest way to go from London to Amsterdam is usually by plane by I have found that if you land in London and then take the train to Paris and then on to Amsterdam is a much more enjoyable trip with less crazy airport security also less worry about baggage limits

There you have it, the perfect way to maximise your exploring time on a London, Paris and Amsterdam itinerary.

There are plenty of tours on Viator as well as Get Your Guide to not only help you get your bearings around the city but also make the most of your time.

Walks In Vondel Park Before A Picnic

One cannot visit Amsterdam and not sample their lifestyle. There is just something so laid back about the city and its people. Perhaps it’s a lifestyle that includes cycling in their daily routines. It seems kids in Amsterdam are introduced very early to this.

You will see a lot of small families cycling through the city with most taking to the parks for R&R sessions with family and friends. While locals are cycling through the city’s green spaces you can join them for a romantic stroll through Vondel Park.

With more than 120 acres you can happily get lost in conversation. When the moment calls for it, you can lounge in the few cafes that are dotted around the grounds of the park. If you are visiting  Amsterdam between June and August you can settle on the grass for a picnic and let musicians serenade you will performances of classical music, pop, world music, dance and cabaret all for free!

Tour The City While Sampling Food Around the City

They say the best way to man’s heart is through his stomach but I think that saying goes for women too. Nothing beats sampling good food and even better when there is variety. Amsterdam is a beautiful city, event better toured while sampling great food around the city.

One of the things I enjoyed was taking my boyfriend on a food tour around Amsterdam. The tour was a combination of walking and a canal cruise. Perfect for couples. For something different but still along the same lines you can also check out the many cool brewery and beer tours in Amsterdam.

Our boat cruise on the canal seemed mostly filled with couples and honeymooners. I guess you that should tell you something. A tour you need to add to your list of romantic things to do in Amsterdam is The Jordaan Food and Canals Tour.

We visited a café serving up one of Amsterdam’s best apple pies, we sampled Surinamese food, visited a chip and fish shop serving city’s popular pickled herring, an old and history sweet shop selling salty liquorice; a Dutch favourite and a few other stops. On this tour you also pass by Anne Frank’s house before you get on a boat to explore the canals.

It is such a great way to see the city and eat through it at the same time, all the while learning more about Amsterdam and Netherlands in general. For additional tips on how to best make use of your time in Amsterdam, check out this 3 days Amsterdam itinerary.
