Best Time To Visit Lake Como

There are usually plenty of Lake Como travel deals through out the year but when considering the best time to visit Lake Como is from March to November. This is when the weather is warm and the gardens are in full bloom.

Lake Como Summer (June to August) is perfect for enjoying the lake’s pristine waters, while spring and fall offer a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere ideal for exploring.

Lake Como in Style: Travel-Savvy Tips for a Chic Italian Getaway

Packing for Lake Como isn’t just about looking good — it’s about traveling smart. This elegant destination calls for elevated outfits and equally polished travel planning. Whether you’re boating past villas or dining lakeside in Bellagio, here’s how to combine fashion with function on your Italian escape.

1. Protect Your Trip with the Right Insurance

Luxury travel deserves top-tier protection. Before jetting off, consider investing in travel insurance for luxury vacations in Italy. Look for plans that cover boutique hotel stays, designer shopping, and transportation hiccups — ideal for high-end travelers.

2. Use a Travel Card That Does More

Shopping in Como’s stylish boutiques or Milan’s fashion streets? Bring one of the best credit cards for European travel — preferably a fashion credit card with purchase protection. These cards often include no foreign transaction fees, plus added perks like theft or damage protection on high-value purchases.

3. Pack Resort Looks Worthy of the Lakefront

Lake Como fashion leans effortless, feminine, and refined. Think flowing dresses, structured handbags, and luxe sunglasses. If you’re shopping before your trip, go for designer resort wear for Italian lakeside towns — perfect for cocktail hour on the terrace or a stroll through Varenna.

4. Book Boutique Stays with Bonus Perks

Want to enhance your hotel experience? Look into boutique hotel bookings with credit card rewards. Many luxury cards offer statement credits, complimentary upgrades, or free breakfasts when booking through their travel portals — perfect for stays at elegant villas or waterfront hotels.

Travel Tip: Double Dip with Rewards

Using the right travel card for shopping in Italy’s fashion towns means you can earn rewards both on your flights and your designer finds — all while getting built-in travel protections. It’s a fashion-forward win-win.

1. Amalfi coast

Where to start in describing best travels in Italy? Difficult to choose. We suggest the Amalfi Coast. The pearl of Campania covers a relatively small area in terms of size but decidedly rich in natural and food and wine beauties.

The main towns that touches are Amalfi, Atrani, Cetara, Conca dei Marini, Furore, Maiori, Minori, Positano, Praiano, Ravello, Vietri sul Mare, all connected by the Strada Statale 163 Amalfitana, rightly considered one of the most beautiful roads in Italy.

The peculiarity of the Amalfi Coast is the arrangement of houses and land in a vertical way, and villages that strike for their maze of picturesque and fairytale streets.

There is no shortage of beaches and walks, while as regards the attractions that you just cannot miss, we recommend Ravello with its villas, Rufolo and Cimbrone, Amalfi with its cathedral and its alleys that climb towards the mountain and Positano, with its chic air and its seaside restaurants.

The Amalfi Coast is a trip to Italy to be enjoyed slowly and with amazement, adding Salerno and Sorrento to the itinerary.

2. Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre area, on the Ligurian coast, includes the small villages of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore, included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Their position, the colors of the houses, the scent of focaccia that can be smelt walking on the streets and a sea that invites all year round make Cinque Terre one of the areas to be considered absolutely for a trip to Italy.

Lovers of mountain walks can take one of the two paths that cross the territory to enjoy the Cinque Terre from a different point of view. In the high season, less frequented: and consider that the different towns are connected by train. You can leave on foot, and return easily.

3. Chianti Road

Hills that frame small stone villages, estates and vineyards, olive groves that overlook and complete a panorama that is already unique and fascinating in itself, loved by both Italians and foreigners.

It is the Chianti road, also called Chiantigiana, which connects Florence and Siena and winds among others, between Greve in Chianti, Radda in Chianti, Castellina in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti up to Siena between wineries, producers of pecorino and places where time seems to stand still.

A route along the Chianti road means not only enjoying the beauty of the landscape: it is a unique food and wine experience, one of the trips to Italy that are a must for lovers of good wine and good living.

Continuing once again to Siena, you can reach the Val d’Orcia, between the wine villages of Montalcino and Montepulciano, and go as far as Bagno Vignoni and its spas. There are so many amazing towns in Tuscany one has to visit at least once in a lifetime.

4.Viterbo and Surroundings

Upper Lazio is the perfect choice for those looking for a relaxing place to discover while travelling, and staying in Italy. From Lake Vico to Viterbo with its structures dating back to the papal period without forgetting Bomarzo and its Monster Park.

Also to mention, Soriano nel Cimino, Tuscania and its Etruscan Necropolis and Tarquinia, an ancient Etruscan city overlooking both the Lazio Maremma and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

A separate discussion must be made for the splendid Civita di Bagnoregio, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and known by the name of “dying city”. In fact, it was abandoned almost completely at the end of the eighteenth century.

It was after an earthquake that destroyed the bridge that connected the fortress to the lower city and today it is an unmissable tourist destination for those in the area, also to admire the whole Valle dei Calanchi from above.

5. White Week In Trentino Alto Adige

Trentino Alto Adige is one of the regions most loved by those who like to play sports. In winter, it is a destination for those who ski or like activities related to snow, while in summer it is a destination for tourism interested in the mountains and in direct contact with nature, as well as major exhibitions and culture.

If you are thinking of a skiing holiday in Trentino Alto Adige, you will be spoiled for choice on accommodation, things to do, slopes to attend and also things to eat. During the Christmas period, then, all the municipalities set up Christmas markets that catapult into an almost fairytale world.

A skiing holiday in Trentino is one of those trips to Italy to do at least once in your life, combining the visit with two unmissable locations: Lake Resia in Val Venosta and Lake Braies in Val Pusteria.

The coastal area of Lazio, which has Latina as its capital, is one of the unmissable destinations for those who love good food and the sea: one of the trips in Italy perhaps less considered, but trust me!

The characteristics of Roman cuisine here leave room for a hybrid between Lazio and Campania cuisine with an important presence of fish, cooked in different ways (the tiella is a must).

Do not miss Gaeta with its split mountain and the fabulous Garden of Ninfa, to be associated with the visit of the Sermoneta Castle. If you love the sea, Sperlonga and San Felice Circeo are the ideal destinations for a restful break.

Lake Como, also known as Lario, is the third largest of the Italian lakes and, with a maximum depth of approximately 410 meters (448 yards), is also one of the deepest lakes in Europe.

This is one of the most visited destinations in Italy in addition to the beautiful and large lake that is Lake Garda. I have also shared a post on the best towns to visit on Lake Garda.

While previous posts covered mainly travel from Milan to Lake Como from town centres. The below will focus more on how to get from Milan Airport to Lake Como towns as well as other airports nearest to Lake Como to make it easier to decide where to fly into for Lake Como Italy.

Why Visit Lake Como?

If you are planning a trip to Italy, this is one place not to miss out on. Lake Como provides one of the most picturesque scenes in the world, lined with lush gardens, luxury villas and small villages touching the shore. For hundreds of years it’s been a popular destination for the rich and famous.

Many famous personalities have homes on the shores of Lake Como, such as Matthew Bellamy, John Kerry, Madonna, George Clooney, Gianni Versace, Julian Lennon, Richard Branson, Ben Spies, and Pierina Legnani.

The Lake was also the birthplace of illustrious personages such as Italian physicist Alessandro Volta, inventor of the first electric generator, the Voltaic Pile.

1. Consider Travel Insurance That Covers More Than Flights
When visiting Italy, it’s smart to invest in the best travel insurance for Italy, especially if you’re planning to use trains, rent a car, or hop between towns. Look for travel insurance options that cover train delays, lost luggage, and car rentals — it’s a small cost for a lot of peace of mind.

Milan Linate Airport is the third international airport of Milan, the second-largest city and largest urban area of Italy, behind Malpensa Airport and Orio al Serio Airport. Its name comes from the small village where it is located in the town of Peschiera Borromeo.

Orio al Serio International Airport, officially also known as Il Caravaggio International Airport, Bergamo consider as Milan’s third official airport. It is located in the municipal territory of Orio al Serio, 3.7 km southeast of Bergamo in Italy.

RyanAir was one of the initial airlines to make Bergamo its hub and it did so in a typically bombastic fashion, inviting 80 young engaged couples to fly from Frankfurt Hahn to Bergamo on Valentine’s Day 2002. Since that time Bergamo has surpassed Linate to become Milan’s second-busiest airport and served approximately 9 million passengers each year.

From the car parking at only 100 m distance from the Terminal to the check-in open up to 20 minutes before departure Lugano Airport offers a quick and pleasant travel experience. Lugano Airport is the sixth-busiest airport in Switzerland.

This is another great option if looking for the nearest airport to Lake Como Italy. While not in Italy, it’s in Switzerland but still a great option. As long as you either have a Schengen Visa or don’t need one to travel around Europe.

The road network is good enough to move around the Lake Como. You will find the autostrada (motorway) lanes are very narrow whether you travel by car or hire one at your arrival, you will find that driving here is a bit of an adventure as Italian drivers tend to drive very quickly and are generally quite aggressively so don’t panic. After spending some time with you will get used to and adapt to driving here.

How To Get From Milan To Lake Como By Train

The best way to get to Lake Como from Milan city by train, and it is also the most convenient way to travel too as well as being affordable in price and comfort. There is are two railway lines that connect Milan and Lake Como – from Milano Porta Garibaldi, and from Milano Nord Cadorna.

The first option to get to Como from Milan is via the train from Milan Centrale or Porta Garibaldi and then on to Como S. Giovanni, a station about 10 minutes’ stroll from the lakefront. The trains departing from the two stations use the same route, the only difference is that with the trains from Centrale, you have fewer stops. Another thing to note is that the Porta Garibaldi trains have few trains running as they make stops at almost every station. This results in the journey taking almost twice as long.

The journey time from Centrale to Como is only 36 minutes, via the Porta Garibaldi to Como route the journey time is over an hour. Train ticket prices vary too, between €4.80 for slow regional trains and €14 for speedy trains. Still much cheaper compared to train travel in London.  For more on options and Milan to Lake Como train costs, you can buy tickets online via Trenitalia, or in-person on the station but for the fast trains on Trenitalia, I would recommend booking these in advance sometimes as some journeys do sell out.

  • Express trains from Milan Central Station to Como: comfortable trains, very few stops and shorter travel time (under 40 mins). Trains stop at a station named Como San Giovanni, with only a few minute’s walk to get to the lake from the station and boats around the lake.
  • Regional trains from Milan Porta Garibaldi to Como San Giovanni: have more stops to get to Lake Como and travel time is about 60 minutes travel time.
  • Regional trains to Como Lago: depart from Milano Cadorna, Milano Domodossola, Milano Bovisa. All take around 60 minutes with a lot of stops, but you arrive right in front of the lake and the boats.
  • Regional trains to the east side of the lake: take a train from Milano Central to Tirano and stop at Lecco, Varenna or Colico. Varenna is especially good: 60 minutes rail trip and you can get to a boat at the centre of the lake, to reach Bellagio in 10 minutes.

Departure timing and nearest stations

Trains from Milan to Lake Como operates each day a week.  The first departure starts at the 5:30 AM while the last departure leaves just after the 11:00 p.m. there are numerous trains are operating and you can get a train within an hour of the interval at peak timing. The nearest starting train stations are Milano Centrale or Milano Porta Garibaldi train station while the arrival train station is Como S. Giovanni. For train timetables for the Milan to Lake Como trains check out Omio which will have train times and prices for the different railway lines.

Traveling By Bus From Milan To Lake Como

Travelling by bus from Milan to Lake Como is another easy and cheap options. This way you also get to take in views of the towns too along the way.

Departure timing and nearest stations

There are about three local bus companies which run services from Milan to the Lake Como – Trenitalia, Trenord, and BlaBlaCar. The fare ranges from 4€ to 6.80€ with the overall journey being 1 hour and 10 minutes, from Milan central station to Como train station.

The total distance between Milan and Lake Como is around 51 kilometers and the first buses leave at 6:30 a.m. while the last departure ends before 11:00 p.m., with an interval of 1 hour between buses.

Overall, traveling by local transport can be very pleasant as well as great option if you are on a budget as tickets are as low as 4€. Even with the cheap prices you still get a comfortable seat and many of the buses also offer hotspots and charging points. You can check bus tickets and times on Omio.

Traveling from Milan Malpensa Airport to Lake Como

I have detailed the closest airports to Lake Como for each of the towns in my other post as well. Malpensa airport is located north of Milan, and the closest airport to Lake Como. In the event, you are heading straight to Como from Milan airport. From Malpensa airport to Lake Como, you have two options. The first option and I think the easiest is taking direct TILO trains,  running daily from the airport to Como S. Giovanni. This train takes about an hour and a half. These new direct trains operate between 7.12 am to 11.12 pm and run about every two hours, and cost €17 every way. Again use Omio to find out the times of the earliest train once you land in Milan.

The second option, includes a train change. From Malpensa take an express train heading to Milan and get off at Saronno station, from there,  you can hop on a train to Como Nord Lago, the station right next to the Lake Como. The journey time between Malpensa and Como varies between 50 minutes to 1 hour 20, depending on connections, and tickets cost €10.90 each way.

Traveling from Milan to Bellagio & Varenna

Bellagio can be reached very easily from any from Milan centrale or Como by a train or local transport. You can take a train from Milan Centrale to Bellagio – there are departures every hour with the ticket fare of 7€.

Varenna distances from Milan is about 73 kilometers, and it takes 1 hour and 30 minutes of time to get to the picturesque town by train and the fare cost of 6.80€.

So, have you been to Lake Como? Did you take the train, bus or drive? How did you find the transportation?

Italy is blessed with many beautiful lakes and many of which I have had the pleasure to visit. In this post, I am sharing the best towns on Lake Como, including everything from Lake Como’s most beautiful places to visit, the best place to stay around Lake Como as well as places to eat and of course Lake Como map of towns to explore. For more tips on things to do in the region as well as for further ideas on what to do in Lake Como, check out my post on the best tours in Lake Como.

Best Towns On Lake Como

Lake Como, located in Northern Italy’s Lombardy region, is well known for its dramatic scenery, set against the foothills of the Alps. The lake is shaped like an upside-down Y(see Lake Como Map below), with three slender branches that meet at the resort town of Bellagio. At the bottom of the southwest branch lies the city of Como, home to Renaissance architecture and a funicular that travels up to the mountain town of Brunate.

Below I will be showcasing best towns in Lake Como, Lake Como towns to visit, from Lecco, Bellagio, Menaggio and more. Lake Como towns and villages are breaming with beautiful villas and gardens worthy of Instagramming. Lake Como elevation and surrounding hills and mountains provide amazing views, of course, I will also be including best places Lake Como visitors need to check out in each area.

Bellagio

Regarded as the Pearl of Lake Como, Bellagio is a stunning town situated in the middle of the lake’s southernmost branches. Bellagio is populated with quaint villas that offer stunning views of the lake. During your time in Bellagio, drop by some of these villas, like Villa Melzi and Villa Serbelloni. These villas have stunning and picturesque gardens which make them a great place to relax and unwind.

You can take some amazing and worthwhile day trips to places like Como (where you can revel in stunning architectural sights and hiking trails), Menaggio (if you want to hike and go rock climbing), and Punta Balbianello (where some parts of Star Wars were filmed).

Great places to stay in Bellagio that offer you the best views of the lake which I’d recommend include Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Hotel Suisse, and Hotel Il Perlo Panorama. Bellagio also has several boat tours that I believe anyone would enjoy. The best way to get around in Bellagio is by car, and you can reach all other nearby towns with ease.

Lecco

A resort town located at the southern end of Lake Como, Lecco is one of the beautiful towns in Lombardy, Italy. One of the best features of Lecco is its stunning waterfront area, and the amazing views of the lake and the mountains it offers.

While in Lecco, there are a handful of interesting landmarks and monuments for you to visit including the Visconti Bridge (also known as the Old Bridge, this is one of Leccos’s longest serving monuments, dating back to the 14th Century), the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, Villa Manzoni, and Museo Manzoniano.

A worthy day trip to embark on is from Lecco to Malgrate – I promise it would be worth your while. You can also take a cable car up to Piano d’Erna for stunning and magnificent views of the lake and mountains which I’m sure you’d love. Lecco is also great spot for walking and cycling, so these are top activities to do while in Lecco.

Great place to eat in Lecco include Garage Pub (fast food and vegeterian), Al Porticciolo 84 (Italian, Mediterranean, and seafood), and Mamaioa Bistrot (Italian, Seafood, and Mediterranean).

Menaggio

A tourist favorite, Menaggio is a quaint and serene town with breathtaking views of Lake Como. Mennagio has lots of small boutiques and crafts shops that sell fashion items, food, and interior décor pieces. You can find these shops in the town center and enjoy a day of fun and shopping. You can also go on walks around the town to discover its great sights and hidden gems.

Menaggio has some amazing churches you can visit, like San Stefano, San Carlo, and San Giusto. The town also houses a picturesque bell tower and the ruins of a medieval castle.

From Mennagio, I recommend taking day trips to nearby towns like Bellagio and Varenna (a quick ferry ride will do the trick). You can also take the bus or your car to Tremezzina, which is just 10 minutes away.

Varenna

Located off the coast of Lake Como, Varenna is a slow-paced fishing village where visitors and tourists go to relax and unwind. Varenna has a host of amazing and breathtaking sights and locations that you can explore, and exciting activities for you to partake in.

While in Varenna, I’d recommend visiting Villa Monastero (an old monastery turned botanical garden and museum, and it also serves as an international conference center), Villa Cipressi (a building populated with beautiful Cyprus trees from which its name is derived), and Castello di Vezio (a medieval fortress that offers stunning views of the town).

Varenna’s rich history can be traced back to the eleventh century, and the town still manages to retain and exhibit that noble and historical flair. It offers some of the most scenic and stunning views, and is a great place for walks, tours, and sightseeing.

Tremezzo

Lake Como is home to lots of scenic and picturesque tourist hotspots, and Tremezzo is one of the most popular ones. While in Tremezzo, I recommend visiting Villa Carlotta and enjoying its tremendously beautiful gardens.

Great places to eat in Tremezzo include Cantina Follie, La Dersana, and Bar Victoria. From Tremezzo, you can take day trips to towns like Varenna and Tremezzina and explore the sights and culture.

 Lenno

Lenno is one of the beautiful and quaint Italian towns off the shores of Lake Como. It house great monuments which I think everyone should visit, like Villa del Balbianello (a grand villa renowned for its stunning gardens with beautiful trees and flowers in Italy’s colors of red, green, and white),  I Giardini di Villa Melzi, and Villa Mylius Vigoni.

Lenno has superb dining, and you can have a taste of that by visiting its amazing restaurants, like Ristorante Lenno, La Fabbrica del Gelato, and Hosteria Magnolia.

Bellano

Bellano is one of Lake Como’s hidden gems, situated on its eastern shore. It has a thriving tourist scene, and lots of great places to eat and explore. It is one of Lake Como’s pearls, and one of the best spots to visit in Northern Italy. The hotels in Bellano are great because they offer you stunning and unbeatable views of the lake.

During your time in Bellano, some great things I suggest doing include visiting Chiesa di San Stefano, La Ca Di Radio Vecc, and Chiesa dei Santi Nazaro e Celso. You can also take day trips to nearby towns like Menaggio and Bellagio.
