Each of the many amazing islands in Greece have their own signature dishes and produce that speaks to the history of the people, the island and crops that grow on the island.

On Andros’ signature dish is the frotalia, a hearty omelette the can be baked or fried and is usually made with seasonal vegetables, local cheese and sausage. The on Santorini, you have tomatoes as the main produce that this is featured on many greek recipes and meze.

Usually, they are sun-dried and placed in jars filled with olive oil to give them a longer life. While visiting Santorini don’t leave without tasting the Tomato fritters, made with either fresh tomatoes or sun-dried tomatoes.

Complete Guide To The Best Santorini Boat Tours

Complete Guide To The Best Santorini Boat Tours

I am sure you will no doubt have heard about the amazing Santorini sunset or Oia sunset as some may refer it too.

The plenty of cool vantage spots to see the sunset on the island, my favourite spot to see the Santorini sunset is away from the crowds and hoards of tourists that clog up the alleyways and rooftops of the small island is far at sea.

Quiet, serene, wine glass in hand, shimmering waters ahead of you basked in the golden glow from the sun. Suddenly everything comes to a stop.

Catamarans stop moving on the water, any noise that may have been coming from the island stops as everyone just takes a moment to enjoy the sun setting and the sunlight disappear away to invite night time activities on the island.

As intoxicating as Santorini sunsets are, one must still choose wisely which one of the cool Santorini boat tours you enjoy the sunset on.

Below is a guide to the boat types used for many of the sunrise and sunset tours in Santorini. You can escape the throngs of tourists, on a tailor-made cruise to picturesque ports and remote beaches in Santorini to experience another side to this popular Greek island.

Tours also include a stop to the volcano, where you can swim between the hot and cold turquoise patches of the sulfuric springs of Palia Kameni.

You can also snorkel in the deep blue waters around the caldera, sunbathing while taking in the striking beauty of the landscape, tasting the delicious Greek food offered onboard.

If you are lucky you some of the best Santorini sunset boat tours also get to taste some of the Greek beers and wines from the local Santorini wineries.

Types Of Boat Tours In Santorini Available

When you visit Santorini, whether for a quick visit or an extended island hopping tour or even to work through an Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini itinerary in Greece, you will likely not want to miss out sailing around the caldera.

If you happen to go on one of the Santorini boat tours below are the variety of tours you will find in Santorini. I have another post on our sailing trip around Santorini with more pictures.

  • Private Tours: These are perfect for couples, groups of friends or families wanting to have a private tour. If you are looking for things to do in Santorini with kids. This in addition to the larger boats might be the way to go. You get private, personalized service as you sail to the hidden gems that only the locals know about. Or, if you prefer, visit nearby or even far-away Cycladic islands. These tours use the Catamarans or Yachts.

  • Small/Limited Capacity Tours: You have the option of doing the sunrise or sunset cruise around the island. My preference is the sunset cruise unless you are an early bird. You can sail into the Santorini sunset with a 5-hour tour around the island. The tour includes stops for swimming at iconic beaches, such as the Red Beach and White Beach, and the healing hot springs. This usually uses the Catamarans or Yachts and limit passengers to up to 16 or 20 depending on catamaran or yacht size.

  • Large Boat Tours:  These most tend to do half-day boat tours in Santorini. Some of which can start as early as 10.30 am. These tours are usually among the cheapest as they tend to cater to large groups of people sometimes between 50-100 on the boat. The plus side is that they are cheaper, but on the negative side, the boats can seem a little crowded.

Types Of Fleets To Choose From For Your Tour

Even a 3-day itinerary to Santorini would not be complete without doing on the boat trips in Santorini. Below are the fleets used for the Santorini boat tours to the caldera and around the island or even to nearby islands to Santorini.

  • Speed Boats: Perfect if there are only 2 or 3 of you as the maximum occupancy for these tends to be 4 people. You can enjoy an exciting adventure on a private day or sunset tour aboard the luxury speedboat in sheer style. Swim at secluded beaches around Santorini or neighboring islands, or enjoy an intimate romantic cruise. With quick and easy adjustments, the exterior space can be transformed to a lounging area. Gourmet snacks, unlimited drinks, towels, snorkeling equipment and hotel transport included in these tours.

  • Catamarans: Santorini boat tours on Catamarans come in a number of sizes; 14, 16, 18, 22, 48, and 80 passenger maximum capacity. While the boats are beautiful, I highly recommend on doing the tours with a maximum capacity of 22 or better yet 14. You will have a far better experience. Particularly if you prefer adult-only company on the boat. These do mostly the 5-hour day and sunset tours, starting from Ammoudi Bay and Vlychada port respectively. They include stops for swimming at the hot springs, the White Beach and the Red Beach (towels and snorkeling equipment included). On-board barbeque with local delicacies, salads, fruit, Santorini wine and soft drinks. Transport from/to your hotel is included.

  • Powered Catamarans: Similar to the Catamarans above but will mostly not have the sails on them. Complete with two powerful 310 hp engines allow this vessel to cruise at a maximum speed of 20 knots while the hulls are specially designed for maximum stability. The shallow draft allows it to approach hidden island gems safely. These tend to be mostly used for private tours around Santorini and nearby islands as well as multi-day charters. Full barbeque meals, drinks, towels, etc included. Hotel transport included in the tour prices too.

  • Motor Yacht: Amazing yachts with 4 cabins and a maximum speed between 30-40 knots, the yachts smoothly connect Santorini with Mykonos and remote islands of the Small Cyclades. They are available for day trips or multiday cruises and perefect for thoe looking for luxury boat tours in Santorini. Spacious indoor and outdoor areas for leisure and enjoyment; four luxurious cabins with en-suite bathroom facilities. First-class service, gourmet meals, beverages, towels, snorkeling equipment and surprise amenities are provided onboard. Transport from/to hotel included.  These are perfect for private hire or if you want to do multi-day tours around Greek islands.

Visiting this culturally diverse country can be as affordable or as lux as your budget will allow. The best time to visit Greece I have found to be is Spring, mid-summer and autumn.

Greece Itinerary - The Perfect Itinerary For Athens Santorini And Mykonos

An Athens, Santorini And Mykonos Itinerary In 10 Days

No matter how much time you have, Greece has so much to offer that you would never be able to do justice to completely visiting this country.

However, I have a 10-day itinerary planned for you, covering the three major cities and visiting the maximum places. Start your journey from Athens and then head to Santorini; followed by Mykonos.

You also have the options of doing Athens, Mykonos and then Santorini. I have a post on how to get from Athens to Mykonos and another on how to get from Mykonos to Santorini.

You will explore the mainland as well as explore Cyclades; the most famous group of islands in the Aegean Sea and among the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean.

Cool white and blue coloured Cycladic architecture, stunning coastlines and amazing beaches. I have also shared a travel guide for Santorini as well as a 3 day Santorini itinerary that will complement this post as well as provide more details on daily activities to consider for the Athens, Santorini and Mykonos itinerary.

If you would rather everything was arranged for you, I would recommend checking out the 8 Day Aegean islands tour of Athens, Mykonos and Santorini. It runs from April to October and can be changed to fit around your preferences.

Athens: days 1-2

Athens is the capital of Greece and one of the oldest cities in the world; it is packed with historical monuments as well as has a bustling nightlife.

Therefore, you would need two days at best to explore this city. In Athens, you can find a lot of hotels in many budgets but if possible make sure you pick a hotel with a roof terrace or view.

Nothing beats a glass of wine in the evening with a view of the Acropolis in the distance.  The below can also be done as stand alone if you have 2 days in Athens or if you have more time and can do 2 or even 4 days in Athens, I have also added a couple of tips on the best day trips from Athens you can do beyond the travel tips on how to spend 2 days in Athens.

Day 1 in Athens

Start your day early and have a wholesome breakfast and head out for a full day of exploring.

In Greece, you will never have a shortage of food and food options; delicious food for people with all kinds of taste buds. Most hotels will offer free breakfast but failing that cafes and restaurants are plenty.

It is one of the most important squares in Athens and is flocked with tourists and locals all the time. This is the center of the city.

Formerly a palace, the Parliament building and the square in front of it have been the ground of many political events.

In fact when we visited there were demonstrations in and around the square.  Starting your day from here is to introduce you to Greek culture and society and without further ado, head to Acropolis to explore the ancient ruins there. I shared more pictures from our explorations of Athens here and here.

Even if you are not a fan of historical places; no trip to Athens is complete without exploring the Acropolis since it is one of the most iconic attractions of Greece.

Entering into Acropolis Hill(entrance from Dionysiou Arepagitou Street) requires tickets and before doing that you can pay a visit to Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the ancient theatre and a good spot for taking pictures.

As you climb the hill to the Acropolis, history unfolds before you. Make sure you have ample time (about three hours would suffice) to explore and do justice to these remnants of past and also wear something comfortable since you would have to walk a lot.

There is also the Acropolis museum when additional artifacts of the Ancient Agora. There are amazing spots for pictures as you head to the top as well as cool views from the top. Parthenon and Erectheum are popular among tourists for taking pictures.

When you are done with exploring the Acropolis, take a stroll around Plaka and absorb the peace and serenity of that neighborhood.

When you exit the Acropolis and head back down you will find yourself in Monastiraki Flea Market; there is hustle; there is bustle, food, people and culture.

You can also buy your trip souvenirs from here. With all that walking you may have worked up an appetite.

Plaka and Monastiraki have plenty of cafes and restaurants serving amazing food where you can taste the traditional Kebab and souvlaki.

As well as shops, both Plaka and Monastiraki contain endless historical sites from different eras can civilisations; from pre-historic, Greek, Roman and Ottoman

Day 2 in Athens

The first day in Athens was bent towards exploring the city and its historical sites, dedicate your second day to shopping and laid-back exploring because in your next two destinations, you would not get time and energy to do shopping.

Ermou street is located opposite to Acropolis and is home to international brands as well as locally owned ventures.

Spend your day in Varvakios Food Market, a food lover’s paradise, where you will devour some of the freshest and most wholesome meals of your life.

Stroll the Voukourestiou Street, treat yourself to a bit of luxury as this street is filled with shops leaning towards the expensive side. Explore the boutiques in Kolonaki and Psyri and also get a taste of Greek fine dining and live jazz bars.

Note: Getting around Athens is really easy, the metros are really easy to use as are taxis which are plenty.

Have More Time In Athens? Consider These Day Trips From Athens

  • A day trip to Delhi
  • A day trip to greek islands like Hyrda, Paros or Aegina
  • A day trip to Mycenae or even Meteora.
  • A day trip to Temple of Olympian Zeus and Olympic Stadium.
  • A day trip to the Temple of Poseidon.

There are plenty of options for DIY tours as well as those arranged by tour companies. To make the most of your time and travel between sights I would highly recommend doing day trips from Athens as transportation as well as a guide are provided. With some also providing food.

Things To Do In The Evening In Athens

Athens has a vibrant nightlife. Only a short walk from Monastiraki is Thissio. Here you will find restaurants and taverns lined up along Dionyssiou Areopagitous Street with many having an amazing view of the Acropolis.

Here you can also find nightclubs and bars to experience Athens nightlife. If that is not your cup of tea there is also an open-air cinema in the summer months.

In addition to Monastiraki, Gazi and Thissio(Thiseio), you also have Psyrri district where you can enjoy dinner and dance to live Greek music.

If you want to experience Athens nightlife like a local then head to Gazi. This is where locals hang out for clubbing, live music from jazz to rock and then some. For more tips on things to do in Athens at night check out my post.

For something understated but upscale head to Kolonaki with more restaurants and bars. If you are visiting Athens in the summer there are festivals you can also check out. Like Summer Nostos Festival, Plissken Festival, Rockwave Festival.

Where To Stay In Athens

There are plenty of places to stay in Athens covering all budgets. I will cover more of this in later posts including tips with a full list of things to do in Athens, but would really recommend a hotel with a view of the Acropolis on the roof terraces it looks so beautiful when lit up in the evening.

Santorini: days 3-6

Whenever you think of Greece, the whitewashed houses of Santorini and its clean sandy beaches come to your mind.

The island of Santorini is an ideal honeymoon destination and you would have to use a ferry from Athens to reach here and check in to your hotel. I have shared tips on how to get from Athens to Santorini on the blog.

Day 1 in Santorini

Oia would be your first destination in Santorini. It is a coastal village where all houses are whitewashed and are carved into rugged clifftops.

Have breakfast in any of the eateries in this small town. Oia is filled with small book shops and galleries.

However, for those who are not interested in shopping, you can walk down the village, sit, relax in the blowing winds, and absorb the magnificent view from the caldera.

Since it is a coastal establishment, there is one Maritime Museum as well, exhibiting local seafaring history.

In my recent post I shared tips on how to get around Santorini but the majority of towns like Oia and Fira don’t really require you to have a car as they are very walkable.

For the other towns buses and taxis are accessible. Check out my post for additional information.

Greece Itinerary - The Perfect Itinerary For Athens Santorini And Mykonos

Spend the rest of your day in Fira, the capital of Santorini which is much alike yet modern and more developed from Oia.

Fira also has a lot of small shops, restaurants and bars. You can get majestic views of the island from this place.

Especially, spending your evening in Fira would allow you to witness the most glorious sunset of your life, at the edge of an island.

For dinner, descend to the charming port of Ammoudi  Bay and have a taste of the fresh produce from the Mediterranean sea.

Having a dip into the crystal-clear water at night would set you up for the mood. Ammoudi Bay is great for having a night out for party, food and drinks.

For more tips on where to eat, I shared a post of my top restaurants in Santorini to check out.

Day 2 in Santorini

For your second day in Santorini, explore the archaeological site of Akrotiri. This town is home to ruins from the Minoan period.

Exploring these ruins won’t take much time. Most people come to this town just for the ruins and then head out to the beaches as there isn’t much to do in the area.

The population here mostly consists of farmers. However, strolling here and there for a while could bring you some refreshment and relaxation. Head to the red beach which is one of the most unique beaches in Greece.

Greece Itinerary - The Perfect Itinerary For Athens Santorini And Mykonos

As beautiful as this beach is there aren’t a lot of activities to do at the Red Beach but it’s popular with sunbathers and light swimming.

If you want more activities, I would suggest heading towards Perissa. The village and beach offer more, there are shops, cafes, clubs for evening entertainment.

Perissa is developed and the main attraction here is the black sand beach. There are different water activities you can try apart from swimming in the deep blue waters.

There are shops offering diving and other water activities The night time at Perissa beach is pretty crowded, with people pouring in and out of restaurants, shops and nightclubs. For more tips, I have a post on the best beaches in Santorini.

Day 3 in Santorini

What’s the point of visiting an island if you’re not going on a cruise? So, your day three in Santorini would compromise of a full day catamaran tour exploring the Aegean Sea.

If you are going with a partner or family; sailing whole day on a boat gives you time to bond and cherish each other’s company.

There are a lot of sailing companies in Santorini that offer full day catamaran tours with different packages. I shared a post on our Santorini sunset cruise around the island.

Where To Stay In Santorini

I have covered where to stay in Santorini extensively on the blog. From tips on the best areas to stay in Santorini to covering tops on cheap hotels in Oia as well as cheap hotels with views of the Caldera and more.

There are plenty of options to choose from; luxury suites with private pool to affordable places to stay that won’t break the bank whiles still allowing you to have insta-moments.

Mykonos: days 7-10

Mykonos, just like Santorini is another Greek island that is a hit with tourists. The island is known for its white homes, windmills, majestic sea view and night scenes.

From Santorini, a ferry would take you to Mykonos in about 3 hours. That is why get a ferry early morning so that you could start exploring Mykonos pretty early. I shared a post on how to get from Santorini to Mykonos and vice versa.

Day 1 in Mykonos

Since the whole Greece trip might have gotten you tired by now, you can spend this day doing light strolling, exploring the city, absorbing the cultural vibes. Get to Mykonos old Town. It is famous for its cobbled narrow streets.

That’s a change when you are used to the city scrappers and take in this simplicity as much as you can. In these cobbled streets, there are hidden gems of eateries producing authentic Greek culinary wonders.

In the evening, sip onto fine vine, sitting in a balcony restaurant, under the starry sky, looking over the coastal lights.

Greece Itinerary - The Perfect Itinerary For Athens Santorini And Mykonos

View on famous windmills of Mykonos, Greece

Day 2 in Mykonos

The Greek islands have to withstand some pretty strong winds. Hence windmills are an iconic symbol of these islands. Visit the historical windmills of Kato Myli which are nothing like the traditional windmills.

They were constructed in the 16th century and have straw roof tops. These windmills overlook the coastal town of Little Venice. Visit this town as watching the sunset or sunrise at this port is one of the main attractions here. This town consists of colorful houses, restaurants, antique shops and bars.

Armenistis Lighthouse is present on the North-Western tip of the island. Pay a visit to this lighthouse. This lighthouse is a local landscape trademark, it offers great views of the Aegean Sea.

Mykonos is home to 365 churches, one for each day of the year. Head to Paraportiani church, which is one of the most visited and photographed religious mausoleum here.

Greece Itinerary - The Perfect Itinerary For Athens Santorini And Mykonos

Day 3 in Mykonos

Spend your third day in Mykonos exploring the Delos island. It is known to be the mythical birthplace of the Greek God Apollo and Artemis.

Although it is a tiny island, you can spend your whole day here. Explore the ruins of Propylaea and the sanctuary of Apollo. Hike up to the mount Kythnos to get a view of the neighboring islands and the sea.

Day 4 in Mykonos

Mykonos is famous for its clean, sandy beaches with deep blue, fresh waters. There are a lot of beaches in Mykonos. You can either spend your whole day at one beach or explore them one by one.  Ornos beach is a peaceful family friendly beach along with many tavernas. Platys Gialos Beach has the best waters. It is lined with luxury hotels and a mini market. Paradise beach is the most fun to go. A lot of water sports, party and music; and as the sun goes down the crowd as well as the clamor increases.

Where To Stay In Mykonos

I have shared a complete guide on the best areas to stay in Mykonos with tips on hotels in various budgets for each of the areas.

Alternative Itinerary For Athens, Santorini and Mykonos

Option 1: If you are short on time I would recommend cutting down your Greece itinerary to 2 days in Athens, 2 days in Santorini then a ferry to Mykonos for a day of exploring and then catching the flight back to Athens for your flight out to your country of origin. This would give you about 5-7 day itinerary for Athens, Santorini and Mykonos.

Option 2: If you have more time then I would suggest you also add Crete. The beauty of the Cyclades is that most have easy access to ferry options just make sure you plan and check the ferry dates when planning as some ferry services operate on specific dates in the week.

So you can do 2 weeks where you do 3 days in Athens, 3 days in Santorini, 3 days in Mykonos and 3 days in Crete.

The other 2 days will be spent resting and light exploring of the city you are departing from as well as arriving in by ferry. That gives you about 14 days itinerary for Athens, Santorini, Mykonos and Crete.

There you have it tips on how to do a 10 day Greece trip with plenty of options whether you have 5 days, 7 days or 8 days. Everything you need to considering when planning a Greece vacation especially when considering 10 day greek island hopper to the most popular islands in the country.

Greek Island Hopping Itineraries: Athens Mykonos Santorini Vacation Packages

If you have a set time and want to make the most of your trip to Greece, I would highly recommend Greek Island hopping vacation packages.

Currently, Contiki Tours does a 12 day Greece itinerary covering Athens, Mykonos, Santorini and Ios before returning to Athens for your flight out. This gives you 2 nights Athens, 3 nights in Mykonos, 3 nights in Santorini and 3 nights in Ios then returning to Athens for 1 night.

The Greek islands have much more to offer than most would think: archaeological treasures, history, culture, dramatic landscapes overlooking an azure coloured sea and, of course, delicious food.

For something a little different, Exodus Travels has a 7 days Greek Island Hopping itinerary covering Santorini, Paros and Naxos. With all accommodation on the islands and transportation included.

Then there is GAdventures with runs three package vacations to Greece. Two 8 days trips and one 10 days Greece itinerary sailing tour.

All are some group tours allowing you to meet people as well as explore on your own when you are on the islands and off the boat. On average 10 days, Greece cost of the trip is about £800-1000.

Island Explorer - Top Tips On Getting Around In Santorini

Can you get around Santorini without a car? The answer is yes! There several ways of getting around Santorini without a car. There are buses, ATV, Taxi, scooters and also car rentals if you so choose as these are also reasonably priced. You can also charter a yacht or boat if you have the budget or if travelling in a large group where you can split the costs. By far one of the best ways to get around Santorini is on foot and by bus.

In previous posts, I have discussed how to get to Santorini from Mykonos, and how to get from Athens to Santorini. Below I will take you through some of the transport options in Santorini so you can explore the many beautiful beaches in Santorini as well as how to get to and from best places to stay in Santorini. I will also cover how we chose to get around the island.

How To Get From Athens to Santorini. Everything you need to know about flights and ferries from Athens to Santorini, including distance and duration of ferries and flight journey. #itsallbee #traveltips #athens #santorini #ferry #transport #thingstodo

Must Visit Villages In Santorini

You cannot visit Santorini without checking out the many cute villages in Santorini. Some of these might be within walking distance and some of these might require you to take the bus, taxi, scooter or car. Below are some of the must see village before we discuss how to travel around in Santorini.

Oia – The popular town where tourists flock to for that popular Oia sunset. Oia is located about 10km from Fira, another popular village on the island, although build much lower than Fira. Oia consists of 6 settlements; Oia village, Perivolas village, Finikia, Tholos, as well as Armeni and Ammoudi both of which popular spots with Santorini restaurants that you need to check out when visiting the Greek island.

Akrotiri – This is the town where you will also find the archeological site with the same name as the town. One of my favourite towns as you have amazing views of the Caldera with none of the fuss of Oia or Fira. If you are looking for cheap hotels in Santorini this is another place to also consider but to better get around you will need to use a car, ATVs or scooters.

Island Explorer - Top Tips On Getting Around In Santorini

Firostefani – This is a small town that stretches along the Caldera and offers amazing views of the volcano and sea. There are plenty of amazing hotels and restaurants in Firostefani. What I loved about it is that its a little quieter than Fira or Oia but also comes with cool views. There is also a walking trail from Firostefani to Oia.

Fira – Much like Oia this is a crowd pleaser and one that many flock to see in Santorini. Centrally located in Santorini and built right on the cliff edges of Santorini and overlooking the Caldera. Buildings are of the typical unique Santorini architecture of while houses with stunning views of the volcano and Aegean Sea. You can get to Fira by car directly from the port of the airport.

Imerovigli – Another quaint village with cobblestones streets agains a backdrop of whitewashed aesthetics of Santorini houses overlooking the Caldera. Positioned at the central and highest point of the Caldera with a name steeped in history with pirates.

Pyrgos – This is a mountainous village and features a fortified medieval castle on the highest point on the island. There are plenty of beautiful blue domed churches here too with some dating back to the 11th century. Near Pyrgos and close to the summit of Mount ProfitisIlias, there is also a monstery bearing the name Prophet Elias Monastery with massic structures resembling that of a bastion with gun-slots instead of windows.

Perissa – The village with one of the most popular beaches in Santorini. The village of Perissa is where you will find the iconic black volcanic sand beach that stretches for several kilometers. Here you will also find plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and water sports shops.

Kamari – The town of Kamari is also popular with tourists and also comes with a lovely black sand beach. Nearby there are great hotels, beach clubs and bars as well as a cinema and theatre. Kamari is popular with younger crowds due to access with entertainment venues easily accessible.

How To Get Around In Santorini

Above are some of the cool towns to visit in Santorini among the many beaches to explore while crossing off places from your Santorini itinerary below I will cover mode of transportation and how to get around in Santorini as well as travel from Santorini Airport to towns. Santorini Airport is located 5.5km from Fira and is easily reachable by car or taxis. The journey from the Airport to Fira is about 15 minutes.

Note: By far the best way to get around Santorini is on foot or by bus!

Getting Around Santorini By Bus

Buses are readily available from the left-hand side when you come out of  the arrivals area at Santorini Airport. You can buy tickets to towns directly from the bus collector. Most of the buses go to Fira bus station and from there, you will find buses going from Fira to Oia, Fira to Perissa, Fira to Kamari or Fira to Port Athinios. Tickets are between €0.90 to €1.80. You can find prices and bus routes on Ktel Santorini and their bus timetables for Santorini too.

Getting Around Santorini By Taxi

While you may be able to walk between some of the towns in Santorini, you may need to get a taxi from the airport to your hotel when you arrive. There are taxis 24/7 at the airport, taxis offer metered services right outside the airport terminal building. The trip from Santorini to say Fira is about 15-20 minutes and costs will range between €20-30. Prepare to pay a little bit more if you are carrying a lot of luggage. If you need a taxi majority of the hotels can call you one that will arrive to pick you up as most taxis can be hard to come by depending on where you are staying. Nothing like London where you can just walk out the door and hail a taxi outside.

Getting Around Santorini By Boat

One of the best ways to explore the beaches in Santorini is by boat. You can either charter a boat of varying size whether you want a private ride or a group boat charter. The boat then takes you out exploring the Aegean Sea as well as drop off at each of the beaches for a little swim. We chose to do a sunset boat tour around Santorini which makes stops at a couple of the beaches and includes a bbq too on the boat. These come in various sizes, I would highly recommend one of the catamaran cruise tours with which limits size to about 8 or 10 people many of which are adult only. I shared my Santorini sunset tour on the blog.

Getting Around Santorini By Scooter/ATV/Quad

First things, first, for scooter rental in Santorini, you will need a valid driving license to rent a moped, scooter, ATV or motorcycle. You are also legally obligated to wear a helmet. ATVs, scooter and motorcycles, quad bikes all from around €15-25 a day. Be sure to make sure you are properly insured when using them as well as being safe on the roads. We saw way too many reckless drives on these things. Just don’t be that one douche bag that endangers other people on the road. Below are a couple of rental places for these where you can compare prices. Note that I have not used any of these so cannot vouch for them but you can also rent these when you arrive on the island. That way you ask as many questions. There were a couple of pickup points around the island, from the Airport, Fira and Perissa from what I saw.

  • Santorini Rental Motos
  • In-Santorini

Getting Around Santorini By Car Rental

We stayed in Akrotiri and chose to rent a car to make it easier to explore the towns as much as we could with access to our own transportation. There is a car rental office at the Airport where we picked up our car. You can find Sixt, Budget, Avis, Hertz, Suntime and Avance. I cannot remember which one we used but we booked our car in advance on EasyCar and collected it after arriving from Athens. I would advise you to book in advance especially during busy periods like May to August. The earlier you book the more choice you have in terms of cars and price options. We book our car for about 5 days and I don’t think we paid more than £20 a day.

The Coolest Santorini Sunset View Restaurants

Right in the heart of the Aegean Sea are thirty-three islands the comprise the Cyclades. Among these Cyclades is Santorini. The rich volcanic and mineral reach soil has meant that crops on the island produce flavourful ingredients.

Most of the recipes of the island’s colourful cuisine are made with local vegetables matched with amazing seafood that is caught daily; from sea to plate.

While Sifnos may be known for the revithada, a chickpea stew slow cooked in a ceramic pot, Naxos for its rostos, a pork dish with tomato sauce, Santorini, on the other hand, is known for its tasty sun-dried tomatoes used to make tomato fritters that are eaten with the region’s popular meze.

You can also combine you love for food with wine tasting and cooking classes with many of the restaurants providing classes too.

I have linked to many of the romantic places to eat in Oia and Fira as well so you can easily check them out them out and dine like a boss on the Greek island. While in busy seasons you may need to book and reserve a table, for most of them we were able to just walk in and get a table.

This was one of my favourites as we stopped by after a day of sailing around the Caldera. Located in Akrotiri, the restaurant opened in the 60s when the archeological site in Akrotiri opened as Nicolas used to serve all the workers there his wife’s home cooking.

Three generations later this little beauty is still thriving. You can have fresh seafood, moussaka made with eggplant on the terrace right next to the beach. Prices are all very reasonable. You can see their menu here.

Tips On How To Get From Athens To Santorini

August 8, 2018 by admin 22 Comments

How To Get From Athens to Santorini.

I recently shared a 3-day Itinerary for Santorini. I wanted to share tips on how to get from Athens to Santorini, as most usually land Athens first. So for those wondering how to get to Santorini, your options are ferries or flight. If you are flying from London, Manchester, Rome, Milan, Madrid or Helsinki, you be happy to know that there are direct flights to Santorini. For everyone else, chances are that you will have to first land in Athens and Santorini after that.

This is a great way to experience both Athens and Santorini. I would recommend 2-3 day in Athens and another 3 days in Santorini but allocate more if you have time as both are special places worth not missing out on. I will do an itinerary that includes both soon. Athens is known as the home of civilization and mythology, and Santorini is popular for its idyllic beaches and sunsets.

As is the case with most of the Greek islands, reaching one island to the next is not that cumbersome as there are plenty of options. The means of transport include ferries, flights. The quickest are flights of course. While I will provide details of all the options available for flights and ferries below, the easiest way to get the prices for flights and ferries for the dates you are leaving Athens to go to Santorini I would highly recommend using Omio which provides all the options one page. So for the best way to get from Athens to Santorini, read on.

How To Get To Santorini From Athens

On average, it takes around 2 hours by a ferry and it is the cheapest way to reach Santorini if you have a fixed budget set. For those that wonder, if you can see Santorini in a day, this would be extremely difficult to do unless you find a flight leaving early in the morning and one leave late in the evening. This would be highly expensive making the whole effort pointless when you could simply stay in Santorini for at least 2 days.

Ferry Services From Athens To Santorini

The Blue Star ferries operate between Athens and Santorini almost throughout the year. By late March, the others too join in. During the summertime, there are close to 4 or more ferries plying between the 2 places. The following are the major ferry service providers:

  1. Sea Jets: Champion Jet 1 by Sea Jets leaves Athens at 7:00 A.M. and reaches Santorini at 11:55 A.M. The travel time is around 5 hours, which is the least because of the high-speed boat. This runs on all days except Tuesdays. 84.7 Euros is the cost of a ride.

The Sea Jet 2 starts from Athens at 7:01 A.M. in the morning and reaches the destination by 12:30 P.M. This is also a high-speed boat but travel time is 5 hours 29 minutes. It runs on all days of the week other than Tuesdays.

  1. Blue Star Ferries: Blue Star Delos leaves Athens by 7:25 A.M. and arrives at Santorini destination at 3:10 P.M. This is a comparatively long duration ferry ride since the boat is a conventional ferry. It runs on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The cost is around 49 Euros.

Blue Star Paros is an evening ferry starting from Athens at 5:30 P.M. and reaching Santorini port at 1:15 A.M. The cost is 49 Euros. It operates only on Saturdays.

The Blue Star 2 departs Athens at 6 in the evening, reaching Santorini at 12:35 A.M. on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

  1. Zante Ferries: They operate a vessel called Dionisios Solomos, which leaves Athens at 7:15 A.M. and reaches Santorini at 7:30 P.M. The journey time is 12 hours 15 minutes and the cost is 48.5 Euros. They offer the rides on Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays.
  2. Hellenic Seaways: Nissos Chios is a conventional ferry, leaving Athens at 4:30 P.M. and reaching Santorini at 12:15 A.M. It runs on Mondays, Fridays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The cost is 49 Euros.
  3. Aigaion Pelagos: They operate F/B Prevelis. It departs Athens by 6:00 P.M. reaching Santorini by 2:50 A.M. The journey time is 8 hours and 50 minutes, and the rides are available on Fridays and Tuesdays. The cost of the ferry ride is 47 Euros.

Usually, the ferries never sell out and the tickets can be bought on the day of sailing. But prior online booking is recommended if you must have a particular ferry ride on a given day.

Traveling To Santorini From Athens By Flight

There are plenty of cheap flights from Athens to Santorini and of course, flying between any 2 ports is the fastest possible route. To give you an example of how to get to Santorini from London. We flew to Athens and explored Athens for a couple of days before getting to Santorini by flight via EasyJet.

If you only have time for Santorini then the best way to get to Santorini from London is of course by direct flight. There are a couple of airlines in London flying directly to Santorini. We didnt take this option up as my sisters visiting from the US wanted to also so Athens to the best way to get to Santorini was to get the flight to Athens and then fly to Santorini.

There wasn’t a huge price difference actually as most times prices to Santorini are hiked up considering how popular the Greek island is. We flew via Ryanair to Athens which cost us in the region on £30 or £40 and then another £50 or so from Athens. Considering a direct flight to Santorini from London can be around £100+, it wasn’t too bad a price in my books when we also got to explore Athens.  So dont assume flights are too expensive an option, as they also offer the quickest and  cheapest way to get from Athens to Santorini, especially if you are short on time.

There are several flights operating between Athens and Greece. They are listed below:

To see price and time options for all flights on one page then use Omio and insert the date you want to travel and it will provide you with prices for the flights as well as ferries too.

  • Ryanair: The total trip duration is 50 minutes. The flight takes off from the Athens airport at 7:00 A.M. and lands at Santorini port by 7:50 A.M. The ticket costs $89.77.
    • One more flight is a late night one, leaves at 11:15 P.M. and reaches Santorini by 12:05 A.M. This too costs $89.77 and the same duration of time as the previous one.
  • Olympic Airlines: This airline leaves Athens at 7:15 A.M. and reaches Santorini by 8 A.M. It is a non-stop flight, taking 45 minutes and costing $105.26.
    • Another flight from Olympic Air departs at 5:15 A.M. from Athens and arrives at Santorini by 6 A.M. The trip is of 45 minutes and costs $119.87.
    • Another one leaves at 7:50 P.M. and lands at 8:35 P.M. This would cost you $179.51.
  • Volotea:This non-stop flight departs from Athens at 6 P.M. and reaches Santorini at 6:55 P.M. The single-way trip will cost you about $110.19.
    • Yet another Volotea flight leaves Athens at 10:45 A.M. and arrives to Santorini at 11:40 A.M., costing $146.70.
  • Sky Express: This flight takes off from Athens airport at 8:30 A.M., reaching Santorini by 9:25 A.M. $157.14 is an approximate cost of the trip.
    • There is one more flight taking off from Athens in the evening at 4:50 P.M., reaching Santorini at 5:45 P.M. It costs $157.14.
    • Another Sky Express flight departs at 6 P.M. and arrives at Santorini by 6:55 P.M. The cost is the same.
    • One more departs at 2 P.M., arriving at 3 P.M.
  • Hahn Air: Their airplane takes off from the Athens airport at 4:50 P.M., reaching Santorini at 5:45 P.M. The ticket costs about $199.57.
    • One more flight takes off at 6 P.M. and arrives at 6:55 P.M.
    • Another one takes off at 2 P.M. and arrives at 3 P.M. All the tickets of Hahn Air Systems cost the same.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary | Food Beaches Views & Sunsets

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

With just 3 days in Santorini you can really explore the island to the max! A star of the Greek islands and many a postcard.

Santorini attracts honeymooners, photographers, girls and boys summer adventures sailing around the Caldera or lounging on the volcanic rich sandy beaches.

With that in mind, my Santorini 3 day itinerary takes you on a journey exploring Oia, Thira, and Imerovigli taking in the white-washed luxury island-living with the pretty blue domes. There is something for all on this little island with some of the most beautiful views over the Caldera I have ever seen.

Santorini is located in the Southern Aegean Sea and is prominent of the islands that form the archipelago of Greek islands. Santorini is often pictured as a coastal heaven with small-whitewashed stones, blue domes, and roofs to blend in with the color of Aegean Sea stretching beyond.

A trip to Greece is incomplete without a visit to this scenic spot. The island is dotted with cliffs and quaint village that transport the visitors to times untouched by the busy life.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary

So without further ado, my 3 day itinerary in Santorini will take you around the island exploring some must-see places in Santorini, from Santorini Beaches, markets,  restaurants, hidden gems and of course where to stay in Santorini.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

Day 1 In Santorini – Exploring Oia And Fira And Surrounding Villages

Morning 9 – 2pm:

I would reserve day 1 in Santorini to exploring Oia, Firá, and other small towns with their winding steps away from the crowds once you have got a view shots of the blue domes where everyone else is trying to squeeze in a selfie or 10! We all know how long it takes to get that money shot.

You will find that Santorini and the towns like Oia and Amoudi Bay have retained a slice of history.

Oia is located at the northwestern edge of Santorini and has some of the most stunning views on the island. Oia port is scenic with some of the finest boats and yachts anchored there.

The Maritime Museum is worth a leisurely stroll before you stop by at one of the many Greek cafes and restaurants.

Be sure to try the baked eggplant and various other authentic Greek delicacies while breaking away for a little respite as well as a moment to catch a break and people watch.

You may have heard of the Greek salads, now you can have a real deal. These salads are heavenly and with a sprinkle of olive oil and some fresh vegetables and cheese, these are as good as they can get.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

There are so many hidden alleys leading to steps where the crowds disappear. Don’t be afraid to explore. We had ample time to walk around and found ourselves with spots where we didn’t see tourists as they were all busy concentrating on the usual spots with blue domes next to them.

There are plenty of spots with great views and little tourist footfall to disturb you. Allow you a little serenity on such a busy island.

Morning Santorini tips: If you are up for it sunrise around the best times to get some cool shots of the Blue Domes.

Afternoon Options 2pm – 7pm

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

  • From Oia to head to Fira. Fira, the capital of Santorini is a must-visit spot if you wish to explore some historic spots. There is a Museum of Prehistoric Thera, which houses items from the excavations from surrounding areas.

  • For the more adventurous ones can hike up and visit the Skaros Rock(brown protruding rock in the image below) to get a breathtaking view of the island.

  • Head back to Oia and take the cable car or walk down the steps to the bottom of the island to get another view of Santorini and the Caldera across the sea. You can either walk up again(good shoes needed), take the cable car or even one of the donkey rides. These are working donkeys but I would advise you not to get on one if they look severely overworked. Take the cable car instead.

  • Watch the Sun the sunset go down. Bear in mind that people flock to the island to catch a glimpse of Santorini sunsets to prepare for a little stamped but if you choose to end your exploring with a hike to Sarkos Rock then you will be rewarded with great sunset views and no crowds. If you chose to head back to Oia for the sunset then prepare for the crowds unless you are staying at a hotel with a Caldera view then you are in for a treat with little crowded fuss.

Evening: 8pm onwards

How does a platter of freshly caught seafood and Greek music sound to finish off day one in Santorini? End the evening with dinner by the bay.

If you haven’t had enough of the coastal cliffs and ports by now, then a visit to Ammoudi Bay is a must.

This is a popular spot on the island but if too busy bear in mind that there are plenty of other spots to eat on the island with the fresh catch of the day.

Stopping by at some of the other authentic diners for dinner is going to be on the cards with the many spots offering great food and a view to boot. You will find bars and restaurants serving some of the finest food paired with locally grown wines.

Day 2 In Santorini – Santorini Catamaran Sunset Cruise

Day two on the island, you have explored on foot, drank plenty of greek wine, slept it off and now ready for an exciting day to in Santorini to take in the island from a different vantage point.

The best way is by booking for the Santorini catamaran sunset cruise. This is simply another must when visiting Santorini, whether doing 2 days in Santorini, 3 days or even 5 or 7 days on the Greek island.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

Sailing down the azure blue sea off Santorini is just what the doctor recommends for the die-hard romantics out there.

The reason why I also prefer and recommend the catamaran tours is because they are all mainly adults and no children – unless you charter the whole thing as a large group or family.

I have nothing against children, I have plenty of nieces and nephews. Just the thrill of boarding the catamaran sailing boats, yachts, or even catamarans with your love or friends with plenty of wine and adult conversation as you many stops by the many beautiful beaches in Santorini – all with different coloured sand.

The catamarans will have a BBQ and drinks on-board for the guests. This trip will take the travelers to the Cyclades, Oia, and other scenic spots.

The trip will also include a guided tour to the volcanic hot springs and rejuvenating mud spa session.

A trip back on the Catamaran in the evening with drinks will be all that one needs to unwind as you watch the sun disappear into the horizons behind.

Day 2 tip: Find out when the touring car collects you as you may be able to sneak in a little exploring time in the morning, although if you too my advice on lounging on the bay with plenty of food, wine and conversation then I can understand if you choose to have a lye in before the tour.

Day 3 In Santorini – Exploring The Beaches Of Santorini

So, after spending the first day soaking in the beaches and sailing, the best way to spend day 3 in Santorini will be to go exploring around the land and taking to the beaches for some relaxation.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

Stretching out Basking under the Greek Sun with a cold drink is one way to end the time in Santorini. Yes, there are various places worth visiting, and no end to the hectic things to do.

With only 3 days in Santorini, the best way to end it is to experience the minerals of the volcanic sand around the island in all their glory.

From black sand, red sand, white sand and the usually coloured sand thrown in. The Kamari beach is a great start for everyone who wishes to have a stunning view of the pristine waters and cliffs. You may have stopped by here when touring the island on the sunset boat tour.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

Nearby you also have Perissa beach with its black sand beach. Bear in mind that some of the beaches aren’t serviced beaches, as in there are no loungers or beach, one of these is Red beach as beautiful as it is.

My favourite beach was Black sand beach aka Perissa beach. There are restaurants there, there are markets, loungers you can rent.

You can even hire snorkeling and diving gear and go a little adventurous if you cannot wait to explore the Santorini Waters plus that beautiful black sanding between your toes…SOLD!!!…For a detailed guide to Santorini beaches to help you chose s perfect spot to unwind before leaving then check out my guide to the best beaches in Santorini.

Staying Santorini Longer Than 3 Days?

If you are visiting for 4, 5 or even 7 days, then be sure to add a wine-tasting tour to this 3 day itinerary for Santorini. You can add a day wine-tasting the homegrown wine of Santorini right at the wineries nestled at the neighboring hills.

These wine-tasting tours are on offer by all the hotels and tour operators at Santorini. They will be driving you to the finest wineries, take you through a trip to the cellars, and show you some of the samples to taste and possibly even buy some to use later.

Overall, the trip to Santorini is one for the bucket list and as some as the island is, there is plenty to do and I really recommend making the time to just lounge on one of the many beautiful beaches and taking in all the beauty this greek island has to offer than trying to see everything in so little time. Definitely one worth coming back to.

How To Get To Santorini

From Athens

Travelers may take the flight from Athens and reach Santorini’s airport in Fira. Besides this, other charter flights fly to Santorini from time to time during the tourist season.

Santorini is also accessible from Piraeus and Crete via ferry. Look out for my detailed post with different ferry services and times.

From Mykonos

I have a detailed posted here with details of the ferries and flights from Mykonos. This also includes details of ferry services whether fast or slow service from Mykonos. Also, bear in mind that flights from Mykonos to Santorini also stop in Athens.

Where To Stay In Santorini

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

I have a guide to hotels in Santorini here which includes budget, mid-range and luxury hotels. If you want to save money then I would highly recommend considering Akrotiri.

It’s on the other side of the island. You will have stunning views of the Caldera for a fraction of the price in Oia, Thira.

If you budget is not a problem then hotels in Oia and Thira will have you wanting to grab the nex greek and rushing to the blue-domed churches to marry that sucker you can stay on the island and live happily ever after.

That is unless you already brought a husband or boyfriend then, in that case, get him feds so that he can’t complain at how long it will take to get the money shot with some many beautiful angles on over at some of these hotels with a view of the Caldera.

Bear in mind that Santorini hotels sell out very quickly so you need to look well in advance when planning your trip.

Hope my Santorini 3 days itinerary inspires your plans for a trip to Santorini, be sure to look out for my Mykonos, Athens and Santorini itinerary soon. Make sure to follow on Bloglovin or subscribe to my newsletter so that new posts hit your inbox.
