Top Travel Tips And Things To Know

  • Make sure you pack your favourite essentials like walking shoes, sunblocks, lotions, beauty items as many of the islands are small so you may find it difficult to get the same or equivalent to what you normally use. Also check out my guide on essential items to pack for a trip to Europe.
  • While nudism is not illegal in Greece, there are still laws against “breaching public morality”. Basically you cannot be naked in public too for all that like to let it all hang out, coverup!
  • Pack suitable clothing, similar to the above rule, when visiting the beautiful churches and monasteries make sure you wear suitable clothing. Clothing needs to cover your thighs and for the men you need to ensure your legs and upper body are covered. So that means long trousers and T-shire. No vests!
  • With all the lash and scenic places in Greece that doesn’t mean you can set up and camp where ever you want. Free camping is forbidden in Greece.
  • Note that while the weather on many of the islands might be great and will look great, trips may be cancelled without warning because of meltemia. These are northern winds that frequently occur in the summer and may be too strong for small boats to navigate around rocky peninsulas. Explore the villages and reschedule your boat trip for the next day. Just don’t leave any must-do boat trip to the last day, because you just never know with these winds sometimes.

Best Greek Beers To Check Out In Greece! (That’s Right, It’s Not Just About The Wine!)

February 18, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

greek beers list

Mythos beer – among the very famous and popular Greek beer brands.

Perhaps beer may not be the first thing that comes to mind when someone thinks of a Greek beverage. But, it is actually an important part of the culture in the sunny land. The history of beer in Greece goes a long way back, however, we could not say the same about local brewing, which is relatively recent. The beverage was widely consumed in Ancient Greece, although not brewed domestically. As time went by, beer consumption increased and various breweries opened throughout the country.

The first ones were founded around the end of the 19th century. However, the multinational giants still play an important role in the economy of Greek beer. Heineken and Carlsberg bought out the national beers Fix and Mythos and possess a big chunk of control in the sphere. One of the most popular Greek bear brands and among the best beer in Greece.  It is worth mentioning that Fix and Mythos are still widely consumed and served in most of the cafes and restaurants. Nevertheless, the Greeks are developing a taste for home-grown varieties as they discover more and more unique flavours that the emerging independent breweries offer. You can master the art of Greek drinking as you take in the sights.

Before we explore the current beer affairs in Greece, let’s take a closer look at its history. According to some sources and archaeological finds, Thrace was one of the very first locations in Europe where beer fermentation took place.

King Otto, the first king of Greece, settled in the country in 1833 and brought his personal brewmaster with him, Herr Fuchs, a Bavarian who stayed in Greece after Otto’s departure and introduced Greece to beer, under the label Fix. It is evident, therefore, that beer is a crucial member of the Greek community.

Now that we know a little bit about its history, let’s look at some of them as we explore everything related to Greek beer culture!

Some Of The Top Greek Beers To Try In Greece – (There Are Definitely more Than On This List!)

Always keen to sample local drinks in addition to the food. Within the post are a few shots sampling Mythos while chilling by the pool and before sampling a few more the best beers in Greece while checking off all the cool things to do in Athens at night that I talked about in one of my posts. Below is a Greek beers list, also note that depending on where you are in the world you can even have them delivered to you!

Vergina (Lager, 5.0%)

The first “Vergina” was bottled in as early as 1998. It instantly began attracting an ever-growing number of devoted fans. In fact, it was the first & remains the favourite truly Greek lager! An authentic premium lager beer brewed in accordance to the strictest specifications stipulated by the German beer purity law. It has a characteristically light, smooth & full flavour. As a classic lager, it pairs well with a wide range of dishes, including grilled meat or any type of barbecue, pizza, cheeses & deli meats, & is the ideal beverage to accompany most traditional Greek recipes.

Septem 8th day (IPA, 7.0%)

greek lager brands | greek beer brands

Solo (Σολο)

The makers of Solo describe each type of Solo beer as “a craft beer with soul”. The Cretan microbrewery operates between Heraklion and the small village of Alagni, and their delightful motto is “Good beer is a human right”. If you are a Pilsner kind of person, make sure to try the Jikiun Triple Decoction Imperial Pilsner.

However, definitely do not limit yourself to these few types, if you get a chance, explore as many flavours as you possibly can, and if you’re not sure what to go for, simply ask the locals!

Beer culture In Greece

Is shifting. The new generation was not satisfied with the lack of unique flavours in the country and started taking the matter into their own hands, fueled by their passion for beer. After all, isn’t it time to pair that marvelous cuisine with some fresh local beverage to surprise those taste buds? A strong Greek patriotism is a contributing factor to the surging demand for a local taste, with many people seeking to purchase stuff that is brewed on Greek soil. All in all, even though the craft beer scene constitutes a small portion of the nation’s total consumption, the future of craft beer seems bright in Greece, with hopefully many more novelties to come and yet to be discovered!

According to the experts, fresh Greek beer contains all the nutritional value of the grains: “the beer that we produce contains only malt from barley, hops, yeast and water.” It’s produced using traditional methods: it’s fermented and aged in specially-refrigerated tanks, fermentation happens at 15 degrees and the maturing process lasts from one to four weeks.

In general, the Greeks drink beer to be social and relax, rather than to get drunk so it is not frowned upon for parents to drink in front of their children and the beverage normally comes in 0.5L bottles or smaller, 0.33L cans or bottles, and contain around 5% alc. volume.

Mythical, sunny, joyful and convivial: Greece is unique! It is the place to discover the origins of our civilization, to be subjugated by the charm of temples that have stood for over a thousand years, to admire the artistic masterpieces of the ancient world. But it is also a country where you can indulge in idleness, taking a dip in the bluest sea in Europe and cheerful dinners in delicious traditional restaurants, or indulge in a wild nightlife. Beaches, museums, ancient cities, traditional villages, a metropolis that combines ancient and modern in a fascinating mix: nothing is really missing in Greece!

Visiting Greece is wonderful, in all seasons. But pay attention to the summer season, it is very hot and we advise you to bring sunscreen and a hat, always useful not to risk a sunstroke when you visit the temples.

Greece is a very tourist destination not only for those who do classical studies, it is the cradle of history and ours too. Greece is the cradle of culture.

You will walk where many years ago the most cultured Greek philosophers, walked.

Each of us has travel dreams and if yours is to go to Greece, let yourself be guided by your emotions. Marvel at a sunset in beautiful Athene, enjoy a cruise on the smaller islands and live the evening with friends.

Greece is a perfect destination for everyone and we hope with this article that we have helped you in your travel experience.

How To Get From Athens Airport To City Centre

January 19, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

How To Get From Athens Airport To City Centre

Athens Airport is located in the suburban town of Spata, and its official name is “Eleftherios Venizelos” or the Athens International Airport. It usually takes 45 minutes to get the centre of the city since it is situated some 27 km away. Now, talking about Athens City Centre, it is a hub to many amazing café houses, museums, and much more.

You can enjoy attractions like the Acropolis Museum, Syntagma Square, Ancient Agora of Athens, Temple of Olympian Zeus, and more, all of which are a must-see on any Athens itinerary. If you are wondering about how to get from Athens airport to the City Centre, below are the options for buses, taxis, and metro services. You can even opt for a shuttle service too.

How To Get From Athens Airport To City Centre

Getting To Athens City Centre From The Airport By

There are a variety of options for getting to the city centre, from buses, trains transfers as well as rental cars too. In addition, you can check Omio which outlines all the options with costs and journey time too.

Bus

The bus will take a total time of 55 minutes to cover a distance of 9 km. The is also a 24-hours express bus service is available for passengers. The frequency of the bus is every 5 minutes to shuttle the tourists to the City Centre. It may be the cheapest travel option but not the convenient one since it takes a long time because of the waiting time and time taken to travel to the heart of the city.

The best thing about this mode of transportation is it is available during the holiday season too. The cost of one way per is roughly about £5. So, if you are new to the city and on a shoe-string budget, then the bus is the best option for you.

Taxi

The taxi is one of the fastest options to get from Athens airport to the City Centre. You can hire a taxi at any time from outside the airport as they operate 24 hours a day. The journey takes just 25 minutes to reach the City Centre avoiding good traffic.

But, the cost of the taxi varies between day and night tariffs. During the day, you would be looking in the region of £34, and at night, you have to pay somewhere around £49. Well, the cost varies according to the type of taxi you are hiring. The day tariffs operate from 05:00 am to 12am and the night tariffs are from 1:00 am to 04:59 am.

In Athens, yellow taxis are standard ones, whereas the black taxis are the private hire, which can cost you twice the amount of the yellow taxis. To avoid any communication or monetary issues with the airport taxi drivers, it is better if you can book them in advance.

Transfers

There are also options for airport transfers via a minibuses or private vehicle. These chauffeur services are available by pre-booking online

The transfers take almost 45 minutes to ferry a person from the Athens airport to the City Centre that includes the waiting time too. The benefit of taking special transfer is you can get their services at any time of the day or during the night. It is the safest option for families and solo travelers who are new to the city. It may cost you £10 per person for up to 3 people, and the rates will increase with number of passengers for some options.

Therefore, if you are looking for economical ways to go from Athens airport to the City Centre, apart from the above, you also have the option to use the metro too. The metro takes almost 50 minutes to reach the City Centre from Athens Airport. The train fare costs is just under £10, and if you are traveling with children below the age of 6 years, then it is free for them. The metro operates between 6:30 am to 11:35 pm.

Santorini Dress Rental Cost And Photoshoot

Many of the above Santorini photographers do not provide Santorini dress rentals for the famous waving or flying dresses photoshoot that I am sure you have no doubt seen on Instagram. You cannot rent the dress on its own for many of these photoshoots, you have to also use their photographers too.

So factoring in the dress rental and photography section, you are looking at £500 if not more depending on the duration of the shoot. Places like Studio Kristo over rentals for €180 just for the dress and their photoshoots start from €300 and go all the way up to €1000 for an all-day photoshoot session. Mainly suitable for wedding shoots.

Best villages in Santorini | | finikia village | oia village santorini | pyrgos village santorini | emporio village | firostefani village

The famous blue domes that villages in Santorini are well known for.

Among the famous of towns and villages, you will have no doubt heard about Oia and possible Fira too. There is more to Santorini that these too, particularly if you want to explore the many beautiful beaches in Santorini, stunning hotels and even more amazing bars with cool views in Santorini.

So if you are planning a visit to one of the most famous Greek islands then this will be the best guide to introduce you to towns in Santorini that you will definitely want to visit. Most of or help you in deciding on the best area to stay in Santorini.

Best Villages In Santorini You Need To Visit.

Fira Village

Fira is of course the capital of the Island and with that being the main centre for entertainment, nightlife and much of the hustle and bustle of Santorini taking place here. Many of the buildings in Fira have been converted to cater to the island’s tourism. Many of the mansions you would have found as well as cave dwellings have mostly been converted to hotels, bars, shops and restaurants in Santorini’s capital. Fira is also where you will find many of the island’s important religious buildings, like the Church of Aghios Minas and the Catholic Monastery. Before Fira was the capital, much of this town was dedicated to vineyards, canvas and a few houses. Now it’s a bustling towns drawing so many people annually. With Santorini vineyards and wineries now dotted around the island.

Oia Village

The most popular village on the island and possibly the most famous village in the world. Oia is located on the northernmost part of Santorini. I am sure you have heard or are visiting Santorini to experience the Oia sunset or Santorini sunset as its sometimes referred to. Also famous for its capital houses, cave dwellings, infinity pool villas and hotels overlooking the volcano. You would never know that this little village was decimated in the 1956 earthquake. Located 121 meters above seas level, the vibrant village on the island has over 70 churches to its 6 neighbourhoods of Sideras, Monastiri, Lotza, Gulas, Vounaras and Perivolas. While Fira takes the crown for as nightlife host in Santorini, don’t forget to check out Oia’s Hasapiko nightclub, the all day cafe at Passaggio and Catch whose dis place host to frequent parties. Also while visiting Oia, don’t miss out on exploring the famous Ammoudi Bay where you can find restaurants and Agios Nikolaos beach.

Akrotiri  Village

This is one of my favourite part of Santorini; stunning views with little to now crowds like that of Oia or Fira. A small fishing village, Akrotiri is also where you will find the most important archaeological site of the island and the island’s only Lighthouse is located here. The village of Akrotiri is located on the bottom part of the crescent shaped island, in the south of Santorini. Another part that makes this part of Santorini popular is because, Akrotiri is where you will find the unique Red Beach in Santorini. Many of the cruise tours in Santorini will stop by here, allowing you to go for a swim. In addition to Red Beach, you will also find Kabia, White and Mesa Pigadia Beach.

Exo Gonia Village

A village overlooking the mountain and the sea. Exo Gonna allows you to enjoy some quiet and tranquil moments compared to many parts of the island. This is partly because many of its inhabitants moved to Kamari after the big earthquake of 1956. You can chill out and enjoy the views at the two small cafes you will find in Eco Gonia.

Pyrgos Village

Pyrgos is another famous town to visit in Santorini. Beautiful castles, churches, mansions, restaurants and plenty of amazing views. Another place with at least 56 churches with Theotokaki Church being the oldest, built in the 11th Century. With the island’s history with pirates, the church of St Georgios, it served as a refuge for inhabitants when pirates would raid the island. If you like to combine you beach bumming with hiking this is also where you will find some of the island’s most interesting trails where you can even finish off to wine tasting in a few of the island’s wineries that are located in Pyros like SantoWines Winery. Or finish at one of the many restaurants located in Pyros, considering this is also one of the main gastronomic areas of Santorini.

Imerovigli Village

With the history of Santorini and Pirates comes the name Imerovigli which translates to “Day Watch”. Located in the centre of the island and greatly positioned to keep a lookout for the Pirates that used to raid the island like they were taking a trip to the mall.  Due to its location, you will find truly breathtaking views overlooking Thirasia. Imerovigli is the place to be when looking for the best vantage point for feasting your eyes on Santorini’s famous sunset.

Finikia Village

Another one of Santorini’s picturesque villages, Finikia comes complete with white houses built into the banks of the torrent. The village offers authentic Santorini tavernas, churches and chapels decorated with offerings left by sailors. Finikia also has plenty of restaurants where you can chill out after a day at the beach and enjoy local cruise and sample wines from the nearby vineyards located in Finikia.

Firostefani Village

Conveniently located near the capital is Firostefani, taking its name, because it’s located on the highest point of the caldera in Fira and looks like a ’crown’. ’Stefani’ in Greek means ‘crown’. Santorini is filled with lots of small little churches so Firostefani village is no exception. Stop by the Church of the Virgin Mary of Aghioi Theordoroi and Aghios Gerasimos. The rest of the neighbourhoods are much like the style of the island, of closely built homes and commercial properties in close proximity.

Perissa Village

Perissa is where you will find the most famous beaches in Santorini, the black sand beach. Like Kamari, Perissa has plenty of options when it comes to places to eat, cool water sports to experience, beach facilities, you can also find some on Santorini’s largest churches here like the Church of the Holy Cross, in addition to the Museum of Minerals and Fossils. Kamari and Perissa are divided by the Kolada, an impressive rock located on the end of the black sand beach. Both cities can be explored in a day if the beaches don’t take up much of your sunbathing time. Another aspect as to why Perissa is important is its remnants of the Byzantine Period, the Church of Agia Irini (Santa Irini) from which the name of the island is derived, Santorini.

Emporeio Village

The otherwise know as Emporio village is the very largest of Santorini’s villages and overlooks Perissa and Perivolos. Once upon a time the economic heart of the island, you will find churches and the famous windmills on the Gavrilos Hill, Agios Nikolaos Marmartis with Greek marbles and the best-preserved castle on the island. Be sure you visit before heading out to the beaches of Perissa, Perivolos or Vlyhada.

Kamari Village

If you are visiting Santorini for a beach holiday you will mostly like love spending your time in Perissa of Kamari. Kamari plays host to the island’s popular seaside promenade with plenty of cafes,  restaurants, bars and shops. There is everything you could possibly need to spend a full day here. Lively blue flag beaches, and if you are up for experiencing Santorini like a local, also check out the open-air cinema ash is Cine Kamari which is open all year round.

The beautiful Perissa Beach in Santorini.

Vothonas Village

This is another cool village in Santorini worth visiting. Built on a dried-up river bed, its unique building are all built underground. While far from the main thoroughfare of the island, if you manage to trek it to this side of the island you will be rewarded with the beautiful Monolithos Beach, fresh fish tavernas and overall cutes and tranquil atmosphere.

Megalohori  Village

A paradise for Santorini wines, with three of Santorini’s most popular and important wine brands located here; Boutaris, Gavalas and Venetsanos. If you want to experience a slow pace of Santorini, then head to Megalohori, built after the pirate raids had been eliminated. Here you will find many of Santorini’s wineries, domed churches and restaurants. If you are looking for Santorini’s hidden gems, you will find it in Megalohori.

If you want to do something romantic check out the little port with pretty fishing boats and charming tavernas by the sea.  For amazing views head to the hill of Profitis Ilias to take in the views of the Saronic Gulf as well as the church on the top.

To experience the best food of the neighborhood, head to Mikrolimano which also features great nightlife. There is also a large local market, the Central Food Market where you can find everything from fresh fish, cheeses, meats, fruit, vegetables, and other Greek staples.
