Having had an amazing time in Australia and dying to revisit, I thought I was due a post on how to plan a trip to Australia for those like me who have been dreaming about visiting Australia and its many beautiful states.

I have shared tips on the best times to travel to Australia as well as shared a post on how to travel alone in Australia, this post is all about giving you an idea of what to consider when planning a trip to Australia.

I will cover all that and more below.  I flew from London and I had a stop in Malaysia before landing and starting my trip in Sydney.

How To Plan A Trip To Australia – First Things First

When looking at how to plan a trip to Australia there are a few things to consider first. The planning and trip guidance are a must to have a safe and easy travel experience.

To explore the vibrant capital city, Sydney, you need to gather up all practical travel information as much as you can. Choose the best time period to plan your vacation, know the visa and custom guidelines, obtain the Customs and Quarantine regulations.

Also, enrich your knowledge base about Health and Safety Information, Local Weather information, Time zone etc.(A must to avoid the jet lag I suffered)

 

  • Passport & Visa entry Requirements: You will need a valid Australian visa to enter the country except Australian or New Zealand citizen. Apply for a tourist visa and working holiday visas, at your nearest Australian Embassy whichever you need. You can apply for an Australian visa online like I did.

 

  • Customs and Quarantine Regulations: According to Australia’s customs law you cannot bring in these items: fresh or packaged food, fruit, eggs, meat, plants, seeds, skins and feathers. Limitation in currency is up to AUD $10,000 that you can bring into Australia. If you need more you have to submit the declaration of your imported currency amount.

 

  • Health and Safety Information: The customs laws also prevent you from bringing selected drugs, steroids, weapons, firearms and protected wildlife into Australia. So, choose only daily use medicative kit only.

Basic Things To Know When Planning A Vacation To Australia

  • Time zone: There are three separate time zones in Australia – Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), Australian Central Standard Time (ACST), and Australian Western Standard Time (AWST). Sydney, New South Wales lies in AEST (UTC +10) and ACST (UTC +9.5) time zone. AWST (UTC +8) covers the state of Western Australia.

 

  • Local Seasons Weather Facts:
    • December to February are summer months in Sydney. This is the best time to enjoy Sydney’s outdoor lifestyle. Local temperatures lie between 35° and 45° C.
    • From March to May, its autumn. In these times Sydney see warm days and mild nights. During this time temperatures across the regions may vary between 20° to 25° C.
    • The winter season is from June to August in Sydney. But winter months are the least crowded. In July the daytime temperature lies near 12°C.
    • September to November are the spring season. It’s the driest time with temperatures hovering around 20°-30°C. And it is the best time for outdoor exploration activities.

 

  • Currency and Money Exchange: Australian Dollar (AUD) is the only currency. In Sydney Travelex, Travel Money Oz and also OFX. Will help you to exchange your currency.

Deciding How Long To Visit  And Visas For Australia

Before you even start thinking about how much is a trip to Australia you have to know your visit qualification for the intent of your visit to Australia.

An important element when you plan your trip to Australia is the visa type you apply for. Below are two popular visa types available.

 

Work and holiday visas

Are you wanting to stay longer than 3 months in Australia or maybe work during your stay, it is a good idea to apply for a work and holiday visa (subclass 462).

The Work and Holiday visa is for tertiary-educated people, aged 18 to 30, who want to travel and work for up to 12 months in Australia. This visa allows you to supplement the cost of your holiday through periods of temporary or casual employment.

 

Are you interested in staying for another year after your first one you will have to do region-based framework for a minimum of 90 days to be able to apply for your second year visa (subclass 417).

When choosing work make sure it is eligible for the second year visa, some employers state it is when it actually is not.

Take a look at the Australians government’s website to see approved regions and types of work that is eligible for your regional work. You need to save all the evidence to send off for your application in hopes of getting approved.

 

Holiday visa

When it comes to how to plan a trip to Australia for vacation, you need to find out your tourism visa eligibility and then of stay.

Are you staying a shorter time and not planning on working, apply for a visitor visa (subclass 600). This visa allows you to stay for up to 12 months and costs around 145 A$.

 

On this visa you are not allowed to work, your intention should be only to visit, and you must carry proof on the entry of the country that you have enough money to survive the expected period of time for your stay.

This is the ultimate visa for a short stay, most people swap to a work and holiday visa after fallen in love with this country.

What To See In Australia? 

There are so many amazing places to see in Australia. I am sure you have an inkling of just how big Australia is. Once you decide you are going to visit, the next question is where should I visit in Australia?

The top cities to visit in Australia are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cairns, Darwin, Alice Springs, Perth, Fraser Island.

 

These are the cities that offer the most activities and culture and worth to tick off on your Australia bucket list.  Activities are usually free or cheap apart from some that can be quite pricey.

Some of the activities in Sydney are really not worth the price and I would recommend that if you are on a budget, save your activity money for up north where there is more to see and do.

Whether you want to plan a road trip in Australia or caravaning around Australia, roads are in great condition around the country.

Australia has a vast network of well-maintained roads and this sure is one of the best countries in the world to go road tripping in. You can easily rent a car or even buy a cheap car/van for as little as 700 A$.

 

If you are traveling alone, looking to make friends or wanting to go as chill and cheap as possible, you can look up car shares on some of the many rideshare websites, where the only part you pay is split petrol with the driver.

 

Follow Victoria’s Great Ocean Road as it hugs our spectacular southeast coastline or experience Australia’s Red Centre in an epic drive across the desert. You’ll find car rental companies at major airports and central city locations; so hire a car, 4WD, caravan or motorbike and hit the highway.

 

Flights

For a more glam vibe or if you have no time to spare, flying is the best way to cover Australia’s large distances in a short time.

Australia’s domestic airlines – including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Tiger Airways and Rex – serve all state capital cities and many regional cities, making it an easy way to travel between Australia’s iconic destinations. Be prepared to pay more than for any other travel option.

 

You can book flights both budget airlines and main airlines via Expedia, I used Jetstar to fly from Sydney to Melbourne but you also have Tiger Airways.

They are budget airlines and offer cheaper tickets but you have to book in advance similar to RyanAir and EasyJet if you have flown with them in Europe.

 

Greyhound bus

If you want to do a trip around Australia on a budget, this is another method of travel to reduce costs. Coach and bus travel in Australia is comfortable, efficient and reasonably priced.

Long-distance coaches generally have air conditioning, reading lights, adjustable seats and free wifi. Australia’s national coach operator, Greyhound, offers hop-on, hop-off passes for popular routes, short trip passes and flexible passes based on the number of kilometres you wish to travel.

January and December are by far the most expensive months to visit Australia, not only is this the peak of summer but also around Christmas and new years. If you are on budget prices are the absolute cheapest between September and October, both accommodation wise and flight wise. The absolute best is to book far in advance to snatch the best deals.

This allowes you to take the bus between different cities by just showing your bus pass. You can go wherever you want, whenever you want and get to meet fellow backpackers to go on tours with. If you want unlimited travel options in any direction for a duration of 30 days I would recommend you to get the 30-day Whimit pass. This will cost you £211 but cover all your travels within Australia, and did I mention all greyhound buses offer free wifi!

You can obviously vary the cost of your trip depending on where you go, how long you go for, where you travel, activities, food etc. If you have more time, a cheaper and better way to travel to Australia is by buying a cheap van and driving up. Petrol is not too expensive and the majority of the tours you usually pay for you will be able to drive yourself. Sleep in the van or hostel or a mix to skimp on the price and eat food from the different supermarkets such as Coles rather than restaurants.

 

Party cheaply by pre-drinking on Goon, Australian box wine a cheap as 10A$ per four litres and very popular in the backpacker scene. Most activities are cheap or free and if you are on a working visa you can easily pick up work anywhere along the way to refuel your accounts for more travelling and fun. This is surely the best country to travel for ultimate experiences on a minimal budget and the place to make friends for life!

While I stayed in Sydney a lot longer than 2 days, exploring NSW as part of a solo trip in Australia, if you only have 2 nights in Sydney these are some of the most unmissable spots to check out in Sydney.

1. The Sydney Opera House (Bennelong Point, Sydney):

Whether you have one day or 2 days in Sydney this is not to be missed. It’s the star attraction. The main Sydney landmark and architectural marvel to visit. The Sydney Opera House is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are plenty of places for the best views of Syndey Opera House some of which you will find on the blog.

 

2. Sydney Harbor Bridge (5 Cumberland Street, Sydney):

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is the world’s largest steel arch bridge was built in 1932. The local name is “Coathanger”. It connects Sydney central business district and the North Shore.

 

3. The Rocks (66 Harrington Street, Level 6, The Rocks, Sydney):

Even if you visit Sydney in 2 days there is no way this place can be missed on any itinerary in this amazing city. The Rocks is the oldest part of Sydney on the west side of Sydney Cove. This is the place where the first European settlement took place when the British first landed. Cadman’s cottage (the oldest building in The Rocks) and the Rocks Discovery Museum are the main attractions here.

4. Queen Victoria Building (455 George Street, Sydney):

The Queen Victoria Building is also a heritage-listed place to visit. Romanesque-style QVB was built in late-nineteenth-century (between 1893 and 1898) crowned by a high central dome and surrounded by 20 smaller domes. Don’t forget to have some refreshments and coffee at the Tea Room of QVB (Queen’s Café inside the QVB).

 

5. The Sydney Tower Eye (100 Market Street, Sydney):

  • Shopping and NightLife:

The Rocks, Darling Harbor and Chinatown are the best places to have your shopping. If you need high-end branded shopping, you may visit the Queen Victoria Building.

For the people aged between 18-40 will definitely have a top-notch nightlife. The Rocks and the Inner City are the best places to spend the nightlife.

 

  • Food and Restaurants:

Cattle and sheep meats are most preferred food here and among them the beef counts as traditional foods in Sydney. In The Rocks, or the central business district you may locate the famous restaurants and diners here.

  1. The beach road hotel Bondi

Are you looking to party in style and prepared to spend a little more money, then this timeless Bondi bar is a great choice.

You will encounter a steady stream of backpackers, locals and music lovers, tuned up to see the touring bands and DJs.

This live music venue, located not too far away from Bondi Beach, offers a “genre – free” party night every Wednesday, expect a crowded venue full of tanned surfers and lots of live music!

 

  1. Ivy

This cool venue consists of several floors filled with different bars and clubs, and has a pool in the rooftop bar. LA glamour meets Italian riviera placed in the center of Sydney. This is one of the most luxurious rooftop bars in Sydney, the decor is inspired by the 60s with private cabanas and sunbeds. On the weekends you can experience local as well as international DJs at the Ivy complex, head to the dance floor or terrace for a different experience than the cozy cabana feel up top. There is an entry fee of 20A$ per person so be prepared to bring cash.

 

  1. Marquee

Inside the Star casino, you find this gem of a nightclub and bar. This offers the ultimate Vegas feel, but in Sydney featuring popular acts and DJs such as Calvin Harris, Drake, Tiesto and Avicii even used to play here.

Expect loads of confetti, glamour dancers and popular DJs. The entry fee for Marque is around 10 A$ for a Friday night and as high as 35 A$ on a Saturday, there is also a dress code that applies, lads dress up in shirt, fancy shoes and trousers, no shorts and ladies you might need your heels.

 

  1. Chinese Laundry

No, Chinese Laundry is not about cleaning or doing laundry, it’s about getting down and dirty! This club hosts superstars like Hudson Mohawke, Baauer, DJ Slink and many other international legends.

This is the longest-running and most respected night club, placed underneath the slip in. The club is made up of 3 rooms for partying and dancing and a large outdoor garden.

Experience bass music on Friday while Saturday offer more house and electro music. Food is also served until midnight, but you might need to reserve your table, this place gets crowded.

RESTAURANTS TO CHECK OUT IN SYDNEY DURING 2 DAY VISIT

 

  • Sokyo

Do you like sushi? Then head down to the most impressive sushi counter in Sydney.

If not only the design of the restaurant and the immaculate, innovative plating of the food was enough to sweep you off your feet then the flavour will hit the last punch!

Seasonal cocktails are served made of fresh fruits and top-class ingredients, and the Japanese creations on the menu offers a lot of flavour, not enough to be overpowering, just right.

 

  • Bella Brutta

This is like your favourite pizzeria times 10! This Italian restaurant offers among the best pizzas in Sydney, placed in the funky area of  Newtown, this gem should not be missed.

The pizzas are made with fresh ingredients, and this you can taste. The average price is around 17 $ for one pizza.

 

  • Quay

This fancy restaurant set in the lovely area of Circular Quay is owned by Leon Fink and run by the famous MasterChef Australia judge Peter Gilmore.

It has appeared in the world’s 50 best restaurants several times and definitely lives up to the awards.

The food does not only look fantastic with the creative touch the flavours blend into an unexpected deliciousness. This is Sydney’s fine dining supreme and some people go here for the shimmering harbour view alone.

GETTING AROUND SYDNEY

 

The public transport in sydney is very well developed, you can use busses, trains, light rails and ferries, even walk around the city!

The best option for getting around is to purchase an opal card, these are usually 10$ and you can use the value of the purchase to travel with and recharge at any time.

Recharge at kiosks and on the train station. The Opal network includes services in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter Valley, Illawarra and the Southern Highlands.

 

  • The ferry

Thanks to the sparkling harbour, ferry travel in Sydney is fairly easy and one of the only ways to reach places such as Taronga zoo and Manly beach.

The ferry operates from Sydney Harbour and circular quay to eight main destinations.

 

  • Bus

Thanks to Sydney’s comprehensive bus network it is easier than ever to travel by bus to the Sydney suburbs, beaches and regional areas. Simply tap your opal card as you mount the bus.

 

  • Train

Wherever you want to go there is probably a train there. The city circle train network runs in a loop around the city stopping at: Central, Museum, St James, Town Hall, Wynyard, Circular Quay and Martin Place. Are you staying north of the Harbour Bridge, catch the northern line that stops at Central, Wynyard and Town Hall before travelling north across the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

 

Are you wanting to get to kings cross or Bondi junction catch the  Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line that goes from Central, Town Hall and Martin Place stations.

If you are planning on travelling to the Blue Mountains, catch the Blue Mountains line from Central.

It passes through the vibrant Western Sydney city of Parramatta, and then on to the main Blue Mountains stations including Wentworth Falls, Leura and Katoomba.

 

  • Light Rail

  • Head to the Rocks on Harrington Street
  • Grab some lunch at many of the cafes and restaurants nearby.
  • If you fancy more exploring you can combing exploring Sydney Harbour with a lunch cruise.
  • Head back into CBD Via Hyde Park
  • Take in views From Sydney Tower Eye. You can purchase a ticket for Tower Eye here.
  • If you are into Aquariums near the tower your also have SEA Life Sydne Aquarium. 
  • At the bottom of the Tower Eye, you also have Westfield Sydney Shopping Mall. If you are in the mood for a little retail therapy then explore and then grab a coffee and snack in one of the cafes.

 

Evening In Sydney On Day 1

  • Head back to your hotel to freshen up and check out the nightlife in Sydney at one of the spots mentioned.
  • If not up to night clubs then check out the many restaurants around Circular Quay or Darling Harbour. A couple of suggestions provided above.

Day 2 In Sydney Australia

Morning 

  • Head to Queen Victoria Building which houses a mall in a beautiful setting. 
  • Grab some coffee and a little retail therapy if you need anything to wear for the beach.

  • Explore Icebergs swimming pool. Unless taking to the waters you can also take the scenic walk on Coogee Walk.

Afternoon

  • Take the ferry and explore Manly.
  • There are beaches, restaurants and cool hangouts to just chill.
  • If you have capacity then you can also check out the markets in Sydney.

Evening

  • Do the iconic On The Rocks Bar Crawl

Considering this is the world’s sixth-largest country and there are both deserts, snow, and tropical rainforests to be seen within the same country when you visit will depend on where you are going. The northern half of Australia is the driest, featuring destinations such as Alice Springs and Darwin. These parts are especially dry between April and September and a better time to go compared to the humid and rainy season to follow. Here you can visit national parks, see camels, visit red sand beaches and even see crocodiles! South Australia gets most of its rainfall during the winter months being June, July and August, the temperatures during this time often gets below 10 degrees celsius.

 

Western Australia

Who hasn’t dreamt of exploring Australia?! My dream trip to Australia was originally meant to a Gold Coast, Sydney, an itinerary with the possible inclusion of Uluru.

 

Having not followed my own advice on preparing for the time zone change, I suffered so much with jet lag that I ended up changing it to a Sydney-Melbourne itinerary with day trips to Great Ocean Road.

Exploring Sydney For 5 Days | Part One Of The Sydney & Melbourne Itinerary

 

I have split the itinerary into two. The first part covers things to do in Sydney for 5 days and the second part covers how I what to do in Melbourne in 5 days.

You are getting balanced itinerary of what to do between Melbourne and Sydney as well as day trips. 

 

Where to stay in Sydney: I rented an apartment in Sydney which was located in the CBD so I had malls, parks and harbour all within walking distance.

This was an aparthotel run by Meriton and they have plenty all around Sydney and the rest of Australia. There are plenty of hostels and budget hotels too.

Sydney is pretty big so you can find plenty of accommodation in Sydney in all budgets.

A performing arts venue at Sydney Harbor and not to be missed. Opened back in 1973, the whole building occupies the Bennelong Point (named after Woollarawarre Bennelong).

The venue constitutes performance venues, concert halls, Playhouse, theatre hall, and a recording studio. Around 1500 performances arranged annually, 1.2 million spectators are attracted from worldwide.

Apart from this, cafes, restaurants, and bar outlets line the harbour offering not just views but watering holes for the evening when this area’s vibe turns busy with city sleekers.

There are plenty of angles to view the Opera House, make sure you don’t miss the views from the Botanical Gardens and Mrs Macquarie’s Chair.

  1. The Royal Botanical Garden

The botanical garden is the oldest scientific institute of Australia and a remarkable historical botanical garden in the world. Located right in the heart of Sydney, it was inaugurated back in 1816.

It is neighbored by Sydney Opera house and many parks of the city. Some plants are featured each month to be presented to the visiting tourists.

If you want to add a lighter touch to your visit, then Choo Choo Express is perfect as it also provides a guided tour of the Botanical Garden.

It will take you around the ground and its glamorous beauties and will inform you about its history of the plants and Australia. They run every few minutes. When you get to the end you can walk towards Mrs Macquaries Chair. More pictures here.

The place calls for a stroll in the morning breeze while enjoying the captivating sunrise, mind you sunset is also just as good. The coast is flanked by sandstone headlands. Go out for a morning swim dive or enjoy your brunch on cafes of Campbell Parade.

Public showers are there to wipe off the salt your body carries after a thrilling dive. The shore is open to experience strolling, playing golf, and whale watching gold.

Beach’s southern end is open for surfing lovers. Right along the coastline, you have miles and miles of the Coogee Beach walking path. I have shared a post from some of my explorations of Bondi Beach.

This place is an Australian winter swimmers club located on the southern coast of Bondi beach. It is an international landmark and your trip is not completed till you have touched the stones of this place.

“Water Polo by the Sea” is the flagship event of place. There are pools open to both adults and children. The only criteria is that you must be able to swim 40 meters at least. There is also a café in its vicinity which offers you the local food at a convenient price.

Bondi to Coogee walk is spread upon 6km track offering beaches, parks, cliffs, bays, rock pools, and captivating views along the coastline. One can walk, swim, rest or eat at a number of cafes, restaurants, and electric barbecues by Maroubra.

The path is fairly easy but also involves some steep spots and staircases along the trail. The path is interrupted by some of the most stunning views around Sydney’s coastline.

Here you can find delicious Malaysian street food at Sedap, head to Senyai for Thai food or Chinese food at Chef’s Gallery. If you are a lover of desserts make sure you check out Uncle’s Testu’s cheesecakes.

On day 3 in Sydney, it’s time to check out the best markets in Sydney. Each shopping corner has its style, aura, and character. You can find local designers, artisan wares, cultural goods, and delicious food. 

The oldest part of Sydney, “The Rocks” is home to 2 historic markets. ‘The Friday Foodie’ and ‘The Rocks Market’. One offers you the variety of food options accompanied by live music while other is a hub of textiles, art, and jewelry.

The ferry is all set to take the travelers and tourists to sail on sapphire blue water. The trip takes about of 30 minutes offering amazing and scenic views of the harbour. The rest of the day can be spent in Manly. 

Manly has a great vibe. There are over 150 bars, cafe, and restaurants to check out with plenty of outdoor dining to watch people go by. For options, you can check out Hugos Manly and the Boiler House.

If you love a bit of retail therapy, there are boutiques, sand surf stores with many local designers displaying their collections. For this head to Manly Market Place as well as Aboriginal Dreamtime Fine Art Gallery.

If you are visiting Sydney during July, August, or September this is a great time do head out for a whale watching tour in Sydney. Many run from Manly.

There are several tour options for Blue Mountains. There are both day trips and multiday tours depending on how much time you are planning on spending in Australia. As this itinerary is for 10 days Sydney-Melbourne the best option is for a day trip from Sydney. You can also do overnight. You can visit the mountains by organized tours, public transport, and individual tours. You can also hire a guide to have an informative journey.

 

 

 

DAY 5 Back To The Beaches

Sydney Beaches

Sydney is the most beautiful city in Australia with its spectacular views. The one gem in the crown of beauty is the beaches.

Spread along the harbor, are many sheltered bays with soothing calmness and sandy beaches. Apart from the Bondi beach, there are a number of beaches including

  • Cronulla (easily accessible by train from the main city)
  • Bronte
  • Tamarama
  • Maroubra

Further North in the city, tourists may find Collary, Dee Why and Narrabeen. They are a hotshot for swimmers and divers. The red and yellow flags are displayed upon there as a safe area for water-sports.

No evening entertainment for day 5 as this is when you catch a flight to Melbourne. There are plenty of budget airlines similar to RyanAir. I flew from Sydney to Melbourne via TigerAir. Make sure you book your flight way in advance of your date of travel to get the best prices.

Below are some of what I got up to while exploring Melbourne having travelled from Sydney.

Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria holds the Central Business District (CBD) like a jewel in the crown. It is the heart of Melbourne. It holds a number of attractions and visiting spots in its boundaries including

  • City circle tram is the vintage tram that takes you around the city, to the most beautiful places and completely free of charge.
  • Street Performances are the hallmark of Melbourne and can be appreciated in front of Post Office and along with the steps of Bourke Street Mall.
  • Melbourne Historical Trail holds General Post Office, Parliament House, Old Treasury Building, Immigration Museum, and shine of remembrance.
  • Graffiti lanes adorn the walls of Croft Alley, Caledonian Lane and Hosier Lane(my favourite.)
  • Food Hunting is there for you to enjoy Middle Eastern, Mexican and Vietnamese. Brunch cafes are a hotshot of the place.
  • Shopping here you will also find plenty of malls, boutiques and high street shops.

You have the option to explore Federation Square before heading here. The place holds the honor of citizens of Australia. The shrine of Remembrance is located near the Botanical Gardens. This is a Victorian state memorial to people who represented Australia in global conflicts.

It is built on classical architecture by the veterans of World War-I. It holds a rich soul and memorable events within it while offering a panoramic view of Melbourne City.  As you stand at Remembrance Park you have great views into the city.

The Botanical Gardens in Melbourne is a piece of lush greenery and rich plants is located on the southern coast of Yarra River. Divided into two sites of Melbourne and Cranbourne, it was founded in 1846. Covering 36 hectares, it holds 50,000 plants of 8500 species summed up in 30 living plants collections. National Herbarium of Victoria is located in its vicinity which hosts 1.5 million preserved plants, algae, and fungal species.

Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden is found to encourage young future gardeners. Aboriginal Heritage Walk is a popular walk track that let you enjoy the beauties of the garden. There is a cafe, and you can also take boat rides on the ponds. It’s a great place to hang out when the sun is shining.

 

  1. South Bank and Federation Square

From Botanical Gardens, take the riverside walk route to get to Southbank. The suburb is a cultural destination of Melbourne located just a km away from CBD. National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Recital Centre, Arts Centre, and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art can be found along its cobbled streets. There are bars, pubs and restaurants here with plenty of evening entertainment. Other places to check out while here include

For light evening entertainment considering the packed itinerary so far, head to Fitzroy, one of my favourite neighbourhoods. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to check out. These include Bar Liberty, The Everleigh and Black Pearl. Black Pearl has been named the best bar in Australasia for 2 years running, The Everleigh offers up old charm and Bar Liberty has a wide selection of alcohol to try, from wines, beers, to Sake! They also serve a mean lunch if you are peckish and looking for somewhere to chill and grab a bite.

The skyscrapers of Melbourne offer up stunning views. From the windows of these high edged buildings, one can enjoy an enchanting view of the coasts of the city. Below are some of the best viewpoints in Melbourne.

As day 2 in Melbourne is fairly chill, you have the option to do the day trip to Yarra Valley and then in the evening you can check out the views. However if your tour to Yarra Valley isnt too early I would head to the viewpoints in the morning as you might be too tired to do it in the evening.

Located on just an hour drive from main Melbourne city, the Yarra Valley is there for you holding a number of vineyards, fine dining venues and accommodation spots. It is weekend hotshot for both tourists and locals.

Vineyards: Being a host place to Chardonnay and Pinot noir, it is Victoria’s oldest wine region. The valley is known for its local brewers and cider harbors. De-Bortoli is beautiful vineyard let its visitors enjoy a winery tour and enjoy behind the scenes view.

Food Cravings: Yarra Valley is the symbol of fresh servings and you can have your wind accompanied with salmon, trout, and caviar servings. Perhaps a side of handmade cheese and preserves?  More than 250 chocolate products are served at Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery nearby for those with a sweet tooth.

Open Spa: After satisfying your taste buds, move to the Piaf Day Spa. Structured along four-hectare rain forest, there are treatment rooms for body exfoliation, heated stone massages, and facials.

Wildlife: Alongside, witness the wildlife of Australia mentioning Tasmanian devils, koalas, kangaroos, and dingoes. Drive through the mesmerizing beauties of Marysville to witness breathtaking waterfalls and water trails. You can DIY this trip and rent a car but make sure the drive is not drinking! Otherwise, the easier and most enjoyable option is to do a Yarra Valley wine tour. There are plenty of options to choose from.

One Day Trip to the Great Ocean Road

Located on an hour drive from the heart of Melbourne, there is Torquay where the Great Ocean Road encompasses 250 km of the area to the coasts of Warrnambool. It is a luring attraction for tourists to enjoy the koala sightings, rain forest walks in Great Otway National Park, and captivating 15 minutes helicopter ride over the location. While here, I couldn’t resist, I bought tickets for the Great Ocean Road helicopter ride which I shared on the blog.

Day 5 Melbourne Cricket Ground And Museum

Melbourne Cricket Ground and Sports Museum

I have purposefully kept day 10 of the Sydney to Melbourne itinerary. You can explore as you wish during the day, do some other last-minute running around of shopping or relaxing before leaving. 

Another suggestion for sports lovers is to head to Melbourne’s Cricket Grounds which you may have spotted walking along Yarra River from the Botanical Gardens.

Melbourne is the sporting capital of Australia and holds the city’s top attraction. The stadium has the capacity of 100,000 and MCG is considered one of the world’s greatest stadiums. It was the hosting ground of Olympic-1956 and Common Wealth- 2006 games. Australian Gallery of Sports and Olympic Museum are its visiting spots. Melbourne Park is located right opposite to MCG.  It is home of the Australian Open tennis tournament hosted every year in January.

Considering the long flights the last thing you want to do is waste money on a trip because of poor planning. Below are some of the essential things to think about when planning a trip to Australia. 

Getting A Visa For Australia

Almost everyone visiting Australia needs to get a visa. I mentioned in my other Melbourne itineraries that the consulate in London no longer processes visa applications. These are all done online now.

How To Get From Sydney To Melbourne

 

If you are a fan of road trips like me, then you will have no doubt considered renting a car in Sydney to drive to Melbourne. Thie journey is about 11 hours on a good day but longer if you consider the stops so more like an overnighter type of road trip. With limited time I decided not to go for this option. If you have more than 10 days in Australian then you can make this part of an adventurous Sydney-Melbourne coastal drive itinerary by taking the A1 coastal road route from Sydney to Melbourne. Also better with at least 2 people so you can swap driving. I was travelling alone for this part of the trip. 

Instead of not a lot of time to explore I highly recommend booking a budget flight to Melbourne via Jetstar, Tigerair or any one of the many airlines flying between Sydney and Melbourne. The flights can be as cheap as about £70, so it’s much better and quicker to get to Melbourne from Sydney. The flight is only about one hour and 30 minutes.

 

Getting Around In Sydney and Melbourne(PLUS FREE TRAM!)

When it comes to things to do between Melbourne and Sydney, another important part of your trip is transportation. When it comes to transportation in Sydney and Melbourne, there are endless options, you don’t really need a car in either city as there are buses, trams, taxis and Uber! You may need a car if you want to do a road trip but there are also plenty of tours too offering great options.

Note:  Melbourne offers a free tram! The City Circle Tram service provides a free and convenient way to get around central Melbourne. Tourists, shoppers, office workers, and families can use the City Circle Tram to travel to major attractions, shops and city events.

Best Times To Visit Australia 

 

My visit to Australia was in April so pretty much after the summer season so I experienced a lot of rain in Sydney for the first couple of days hence why I canceled Uluru and Gold Coast as I just stayed in and explore locally due to really bad jetlag. With regards to the weather in Australia, its a tropical influence climate.

 

With the size of Australia, the weather will vary between regions. Because of the crazy heat in Australia, might be worth it to consider visiting during their winter between June-August. I would also include April and May in addition, these are by far the best time to visit Australia as you can avoid the heat but still have warm weather to enjoy your trip.

 

Particularly for the southern cities covered in this Australian itinerary, late spring and summer, especially in November-December in Sydney, and from November to February in Melbourne, can also be ideal if looking for the warm weather and dont mind the heat.

 

Although I had rain in Sydney for a couple of days, which is apparently rare, there were plenty of sunny spells as you cans see from the images. Whatever time you visit make sure you have packed the right clothes for the weather and comfortable shoes.

Safety In Australia

In terms of safety in Australia as with any destination always be aware of your surroundings. In saying that there was not a point during my visit did I feel unsafe or worried about my safety during my visit in Australia.

Cities like Melbourne have been voted the most liveable city in the world several times and safety of its residents places a role in that too. Both Sydney and Melbourne are pretty safe cities to visit and very multi-cultural.

Like any place in the world, I am sure when you dig deal there are issues like the lack of equality of Aboriginals but that’s a whole long post on its own for another day. If you are worried I would at the very least invest in an anti-theft backpack to keep your documents and gadgets safe. Also, make sure you travel with travel insurance not just if there are accidents but if you lose anything or miss your flights.

 

How many days to spend in Melbourne?

 

So, how many days to spend in Melbourne? Melbourne is so beautiful and with great access to many sights both within the city and just outside of it. When it comes to deciding what to do in Melbourne or how many days to visit in Melbourne consider the activities you are interested in.

You will most likely need a day or 2 in Melbourne, to explore Melbourne CBD, the museums, the cool brunch spots, botanical gardens, markets. We are already needing at least 2 days and then if you are the beaches like Brighton Beach, St Kilda and the penguins as well as possible trips to Philip Island. We are already talking 3 days in Melbourne if you add the unmissable day trip or overnight stay along the Great Ocean Road.

If you add a trip to Grampian and some recovery at a minimum I would say you need 5 days in Melbourne to fully make the most of your visit. Hence I have done this combined Sydney and Melbourne itinerary as 10 days. I would, however, recommend  7 days in Melbourne and for that, you can check out my post on how to spend 1 week in Melbourne.

 

How many days to spend in Sydney?

I am sure you have been asking yourself ‘how long should I stay in Sydney?’ or  how many days in Sydney is enough?  As I have mentioned with Melbourne, Sydney is beautiful and with access to stunning beaches and sights.

Shopping in Sydney, you will most likely want to check out the cool markets in Sydney, Sydney Harbour and bridge, Opera House, Oceanfront sea pools, Bondi beach, as well as day trips from Sydney like the Blue Mountains. You will most likely need 3 days in Sydney a minimum before going off to explore other cities in Australia.

I have fond memories of Syndey, partly because I had the most horrible jet lag and didn’t follow my own advice when it comes to following in-flight beauty and relaxation routine. I did manage to explore markets, beaches of Bondi, take to the views from Mrs Macquaries Chair as well as work through a long list of things to do in Sydney. Might I had this was very much a solo trip around Sydney Australia, for which I have said tips.

 

The Best Markets In Sydney

There are plenty of tours in Syndey that you can do, but I found that in terms of markets I had to go it alone. You can also opt for a private customized tour. These can be customised based on interests whether you want to check out the best Sydney farmers markets, best shopping markets in Sydney for vintage, flowers, vegan food, market cafes and coolest stalls to check out. These can be tailored. You would be looking at upwards of $100 Australian dollars.

Sydney market hours vary but there is a market open days somewhere in Sydney. Even if you are in Sydney for a short time, there will be a market to visit in Sydney during the week on weekend.

 

Carriage Works Farmers Market

If you are a self-proclaimed foodie then this is a must-visit place for you! Located just a 10-minute walk from Redfern Station, the busy farmers market is a popular spot for locals, families and dogs. Although somewhat a mixed market but one of the best organic food markets in Sydney. Open from 8am to 1pm Every Saturday, you can buy quality fruit and vegetables, meat, poultry, eggs, cheese and milk. There’s also a range of stalls that offer baked good like sweet and sour crepes, pies and burgers. Bondi Markets

If you haven’t had pho for breakfast, Bondi Farmers’ Markets is where you should try it! Bar Pho has been a staple of the weekly produce and snack fare for the past eight years, and the warming basil, beef and star anise-spiked stock makes a solid argument for passing on the usual bacon and egg breakfast. In summer there’s juicy pineapples, bright peaches and greenery aplenty from Kurrawong Organics, and May farm Flowers always have a great selection of native and tropical blooms to brighten up your home.

You’ll also regularly find SOL Cups peddling reusable coffee cups, AB Cheese bringing all the dairy goods, organic nut butters from Chunky Dave and hand carved wood pieces from Byron Bay Chopping Boards. There’s also ‘doggy’ parking, live acoustic music and pop-up yoga classes on the lawn. In inclement weather the markets still go ahead, but often with reduced stalls. They also don’t open until 9am, so if you’re an early bird, pop across to the beach first for a walk or swim first.

 

Balmain Market

Balmain Market stalls wind around the edges of the church building and into the Soldiers Memorial Hall and pop-up there each Saturday. The focus is on homewares and arts and craft, with stalls selling everything from live plants to chunky jewellery and antiques. One of the best Sydney craft markets. Inside you’ll see sketches by local artist Ted Lou, who has captured significant local landmarks in his artwork. You can even commission him to sketch your own home.

Many of the stallholders have been selling their wares at the same markets for a long time – some have been there since the beginning – so there’s very much a feeling that this is a community of people ready to look after each other and their customers. Grab a bite to eat from the small selection of food vendors selling gözleme and spicy Portuguese chicken burgers.

 


 

Glebe Markets

If you are looking for the best Sydney market for second-hand clothes then head to Glebe. Staying true to the area’s artistic aesthetic, the markets have a big focus on second-hand goods and local artisans. Browse round and you will find plenty of vintage clothing stalls, hand-made jewellery, soaps and pre-owned DVD’s and books amongst many other things. Or you could just follow your nose down Glebe’s bustling main street, Glebe point road, and wind your way past the round the world eating options till you get to Glebe Public school. If you are after Sydney vintage markets, this is one to check out.

Chinatown Night Market

Every Friday from 4pm, the main strip of Chinatown along Dixon Street transforms into a vibrant night market selling Asian street food, desserts and gifts. It attracts a wide mix of visitors, from tourists and homesick international students to the post-work crowd, who you’ll find wisely padding their stomachs with cumin lamb skewers before hitting the next bar. During peak times the narrow walkway can get a bit squishy, but the hustle and bustle is also what makes it fun.

This is among the best cheap markets in Sydney. A number of Chinatown stalwarts run stalls each week, which means you’ll find yum cha favourites like har gow and mango pancakes from East Ocean, or have the joy of pulling apart Mamak’s fluffy roti canai without waiting 40 minutes in line outside their permanent eateries. As tempting as those options might be, ration stomach space for the takoyaki – a Japanese savoury doughnut hole snack filled with seafood – or dragon beard candy and potato chips on a stick.

 

Marrickville Organic Food Market

Marrickville Organic Markets are located within Addison Road Community Centre, the market is very popular amongst locals, and offers all kinds of production. With emphasis on organic fruit and vegetables. Start off by making your way through the fresh food section, then past the hot food stalls , selling everything from dumplings and bagels to gozleme and gourmet meatballs. Look at the handcrafts section, with wooden goods, second-hand books and jewellery. Be sure to head there before 11 am, as it gets quite busy!

Kirribilli Art, Design & Fashion Markets

One of the best local markets Sydney and its got it all. The second Sunday of every month sees the art, design and fashion iteration of Kirribilli’s historic (est 1976) markets, centred on the weather-proof location of the Burton Street Tunnel right under Milsons Point Train station. (Arrival by train is recommended as parking is expensive and hard to come by). Here you’ll find quirky millinery by Nitascraft, hilarious knitted parrots, octopuses and Barbie outfits by Irene, and cool laser-etched wooden phone cases by Bare-wood.

An antiques corner, features groovy typewriters from the 1960s and several stalls offer funny and handmade greeting cards. Vintage spoons are refashioned as bracelets, and if you’ve ever hankered after a large photographic portrait of a wombat, you can get it here – the place is a goldmine for non-tacky Sydney souvenirs. There is an excellent food court area where you can get a roast pork roll, quesadillas, churros, gözleme, paella, blynis, dim sum, banh mi or gelato and sit down undercover to eat them while watching a talented teenage girl reinventing ‘Sweet Child ‘o Mine’. 

 

Northside Produce Markets

Definitely no place for those looking for Sydney vegan markets. Snaking through the seemingly small park let on the northern CBD’s fringe, this bimonthly produce fair brings stallholders peddling orbs of creamy burrata, blood sausages, double-fist sized heirloom tomatoes, salted caramel meringues, fresh egg pasta, free range eggs and soda bread. A seeming theme here is that many of the stallholders are also chefs, like Luca Ciano, whose jarred pasta sauces and Italian treats, or Martin Teplitzky, who will fry you up a golden croque madame, with Iggy’s bread and ham off the bone.

Is It Safe to Travel Alone in Australia?

 

Yes! I know, I know, you’ve seen Wolf Creek, but may I point out they weren’t travelling solo! But in all seriousness, Australia is an extremely safe place to travel alone and an even better place if you want a break for it all and connect with nature. The locals are super friendly, especially once you get outside of the cities and travelling solo will open you up to a whole host of experiences you wouldn’t normally have.

 

As a solo traveller you’ll have the best chance to make friends with locals and other travellers either at the hostels, hotels, Airbnbs or while you’re out and about exploring the city. So if you are planning a trip to Australia and also happen to be female and a are little apprehensive, know that there are plenty of women travelling alone in Australia. Just use common sense and you will be fine.

 

When travelling along to Australia, I had many an opportunity to meet people while exploring the best bits of Sydney. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with people, chatting to strangers while you’re waiting for a bus or out and about is quite common and the locals are more than happy to help out tourists if they’re lost.

 

For most, hearing tourists try to pronounce the ridiculous place names is often the highlight of their day. Befriending a local, even in a big place like Sydney will mean you’ll get to see another side to Australia, through a small café recommendation, or little tips like, Manly is a quieter, more local beach than bustling Bondi.

Things Not To Do As A Solo Traveller In Australia

 

I have shared post on the wit and wisdom of travelling as a woman, so, while traveling around Australia alone, the number one thing I would NOT recommend as a solo traveller is to go out into the bush or outback alone. Not only are there snakes and spiders, but Australian trees don’t offer much shade from the hot summer sun. Did I mention that I absolutely fear spiders?! Go out with a group of friends and take plenty of bottled water, snacks, sunscreen, and wear covered shoes, and a light long-sleeved top and long pants.

 

Make sure someone knows where you are going, when you intend to be back and your planned route or walking. If you have mobile reception while you’re out update a friend with pictures or where you are every few hours. If by chance something happens all of these things will help you be found more easily.

 

While Australia’s internet is notoriously slow, I think there are third world countries with faster internet speeds, it is widely accessible, with cafes, bars, and shopping centres offering free wifi. It can be difficult to get wifi at some hotels and hostels but a lot of hostels, especially in cities, often offer access to an “internet café” with reasonably priced printing for those on a working holiday visa.

I opted to stay in an apartment in Sydney right in the heart of CBD. Another thing to keep in mind is if you are in the country or in small country towns it might be difficult to get mobile phone reception or wifi.

Places like Byron and Nimbin are popular for people who enjoy the laid back pace of the hippie/alternative culture. While you are in Melbourne another place within relative reach is Tasmania. There are ships or flights heading to the island. A weekend in Hobart, Tasmania is a great start to exploring this beautiful city.

 

The Great Barrier Reef is an important stop for people who enjoy diving or snorkeling, it is dying and we may well be the last generation to see it in all its glory. There are plenty of places to stay in around the Great Barrier Reef, like the Whitsundays, Magnetic Island, Cairns, Port Douglas. Uluru is an iconic thing to see in Australia and the Red Centre is a different side of the country. For nature lovers, Philip Island on the Great Ocean Road, and Rottnest Island just outside of Perth are must-sees for penguins and selfie-loving quokkas respectively. Best Time To Visit Australia

 

Being in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are opposite to the UK or USA so you can extend your summer by heading to Australia in your wintertime. Australia is big, so the Australian climate does vary from state to state, with the Northern states being more tropical, the southern states a little cooler, and Melbourne, well Melbourne has four seasons in a day so there is that! No matter what season you travel in, at least one jumper and 1 set of summer clothes are recommended as Australian weather can be a little unpredictable. Parts of my trip in Sydney it poured like mad for about 2 days straight. I may have just brough the rain from the UK as they hadnt seen that much rain in a long time. Also, Swimsuits are definite all year round because days later I was on Bondi Beach in beautiful weather.

How to Get Around Australia & General Travel Tips For Australia

 

You can travel alone in Australia with ease as transportation make it easy to navigate this vast country. 

 

Flights

The quickest and easiest way to get around Australia is of course flights. Qantas and Virgin Australia have plenty of flights to the major cities and a few regional airports and low cost airlines Jetstar and Tiger air keep competitive prices as long as flights are booked in advance. I used Tiger to get from Sydney to Melbourne, it’s like the RyanAir of Australia.

 

If you are short on time this is the most practical way to get around. As always with flights, travelling during the day on the weekday is going to be the best price and the further in advance you can book the flights the better. This would also be the recommended way to travel long distances like Sydney to Perth.

Buses

Especially for travelling up the East Coast, buses are probably the most convenient way to make shorter journeys around Australia. Greyhound run coaches between a number of cities and offer reasonably priced fares. Used by locals as well as tourists, they make stops at a number of smaller towns as well as bigger cities so you can get off in smaller beach towns to spend a few days relaxing before continuing on their trip.

 

They now offer a hop on hop off pass as well where you can book a longer trip of say Sydney to Cairns and hop on and off at different towns as many times as you want over the designated period. You can check prices and dates via Omio which will also provide flight options and ferries depending on the destination.

 

Driving In Australia

 

This offers the most freedom in terms of not having to pre-plan the itinerary too much and being able to stop and explore when you see something of interest. If you have a campervan of course you have the most flexibility and can go wherever the wind blows you. The highways in Australia are generally in good condition with only a few potholes or roadworks here and there and there are generally plenty of small towns to drive through or by and plenty of roadside petrol stations and fast food restaurants to pull over and take a break.

 

If you take one piece of information from this whole article though do not pull over for the toilet in a rest area! They contain the notorious drop dunnies (as the locals affectionately refer to them) and are giant holes in the ground with a toilet built over them. They are perfectly safe, but the smell! You can smell them the minute you pull over and my advice is to keep on driving. Just wait until you pass the next McDonalds to use the toilet.   

 

Driving alone in Australia is perfectly safe, just make sure you pay attention to the signs in extremely rural areas as sometimes the distance between petrol stations or fast-food restaurants can be extremely long. As I’ve said before, the locals are extremely friendly so never be afraid to ask for advice from people as you’re stopped for petrol or a quick lunch. I had the pleasure of exploring parts of the Great Ocean Road all the way to Geelong, and up to Gunnamatta Beach and on to Arther’s Seat by car as well as getting the car on the ferry for part of the journey when I met my friend in Melbourne.

 

Taxis & Uber 

There are plenty of taxis available but they can be a tad expensive. Australia’s big cities have get transport with trams, ferries too forming part of main transportation. For taxis say if you were to catch a taxi from the city to Bondi Junction, this would cost about $3o to $50, depending on the traffic. A taxi from the airport would set you back about $35 to $50, again prices depend on the traffic. I would recommend getting a transfer from the Sydney airport, much cheaper than taxi. 

 

You can also use Uber in most big cities like Sydney. The eastern suburbs of Sydney are well serviced by Uber. Standard pricing is generally about a quarter less than the equivalent taxi fare. Sadly the legal status of Uber in NSW is currently being untangled.

Tips for Female Solo Travellers In Australia

 

Many of the cities in Australia are perfect for solo travellers. Just like travelling in any western country, there is no reason for solo female travellers to feel unsafe at all travelling in alone in Australia. You can meet some strange characters, especially in the outback again, that’s the same as any other country in the world. 

 

Many hostels around Australia offer single-gender rooms or even private rooms if that would make you feel more comfortable but I would recommend booking in advance to guarantee a place would be available or opt for a hotel or apartment. Hostels are a great place to meet other travellers and hear what they’ve been doing. When I’ve been travelling, I’ve become friends with people I met along the way and we went on tours together and even met up later in our trips when we overlapped. You can also meet like-minded travellers and room with other solo female travellers where you can come together and cook group meals, sit down and discuss plans for a day of exploring together.

 

Solo Traveller Australia Backpacking Tips

If you are considering solo travel in Australia as a backpacker below are my tips:

 

  • My number 1 tip would be that hostels or hotels, especially in big cities offer so much. From free walking tours and pub crawls, to good maps, and discounts on anything from tourist attractions, to bars and restaurants. I’ve even seen some hostel chains offer discounts or loyalty cards to their hostels. Then you’ve got notice boards which can be handy for tips or second-hand cars, or cash in handjobs. Plus in the communal kitchens, there are often little bits of food left from previous guests who didn’t get to finish it.

 

  • Another tip would be to be wary of cash in handjobs in Australia, some are perfectly fine but some can be a little exploitative of people trying to earn a little bit of extra money while travelling. Because you’re not legally allowed to be working, they know you’re not going to report unfair working conditions. There are plenty of people on gumtree looking for odd jobs like dog walking and lawn mowing if you really need some extra cash.

 

  • Unless you are hiring a campervan for the whole stay, I would suggest a mixture of having major points on your trip planned and booked and having some stuff where you’re a bit more flexible to take up some opportunities as they come up. So plan in the highlights of your trip, like skydiving in Byron Bay or snorkeling the great barrier reef but leave some flexibility so you can spontaneously join some friends you make on their trip to Nimbin. Also be aware of any local festivals or events as that could make last-minute booking of accommodation a nightmare.

 

Most of all though, just have fun! You are on an amazing adventure that you will remember for the rest of your life. Take lots of photos and don’t be afraid to try new things because Australia offers so many weird and wonderful things that you won’t experience anywhere else.

Planning Your Trip To Australia

 

Visa For Australia

Travelling with a Zambian passport to Australia means that you need to apply for a visa. Unfortunately, Australia no longer has consulate services at their embassy. It took a while to realise this as their website is not clear on this. Once I had figured this out. I applied only and it two maybe 2-3 weeks to come through. By which point I was stressing as it was so close to the date my flight to Australia was booked for.

 

Unless you are from USA, Canada EU, Japan, you will need to apply for a visa before travelling to Australia. If you are from these countries you only need an electronic authorisation. For example, if you have a British passport you can get an eVisitor visa or the Electronic Travel Authority via the airline you are travelling with. This still costs about $20 Australian Dollars. For everyone else that needs to get the Australian FA600 Visitor/Tourist inside Aust VAC1, this costs £210 or $275(US dollars)!

Firstly, it depends on how long you are planning to travel to Australia. The visa cost are already some of the highest around the world

For example the budget for 4 weeks in Australia would be something like this

 

  • Visa £210
  • Internal flights in Australia Aus $600 (flights from Sydney)
    • Sydney to Gold Coast Aus $65
    • Syndey to Melbourne Aus $79
    • Sydney to Perth Aus $119
    • Sydney to Hamilton Island Aus $89
    • Might want to fly to Darin, Cairns, Uluru, Jetstar has budget flights around Australia. Most are under Aus $100
  • Accommodation
    • Melbourne hostels range from £11 per night and hotels start from around £30. 
    • Sydney hostels are a little more expensive as they start from about £19 for the cheapest some might be as high as £30 per night.
    • Prices are similar to the above and somewhere in between for the other cities.
  • Tours 
    • Majority of the tours will be at least Aus $100 so if you are going to do a day trip to Great Ocean Road, Blue Mountain or the Grampians, diving, Great Barrier Reef Tour
    • Budget for tours in Australia will be at least Aus $500-$1000
  • Food 
    • There are plenty of options for food, from pubs to great gastronomy restaurants. I have already shared some of Melbourne’s best brunch spots.
    • Australia also has an amazing coffee culture so you will find many quality cafes for both eating and nomad working areas too.
    • I would budget at least Aus $20-30 a day for food. Especially if you are eating out often and don’t have facilities for self-catering.
