Day 1 In Athens  – Things To Do

9:00 AM Propylaia

While touring in Acropolis, one of the first places to visit in Athens in 2 days is the first magnificent gate structure that you will come across. A man named Mnesikles was the architect of this project, which started in the year 437 BCE, but was unfortunately left unfinished. The reason behind its incompleteness is the Peloponnesian war that raged 5 years after its construction.

The structure was almost complete except for some final changes. Some theorists believe that the structure could not be completed due to saving resources for the war. To quote one traveler, “It is the only way to describe the grand entrance to one of the most brilliant locations on our planet.”

9:15 AM Parthenon

Parthenon is a temple at Acropolis built 2500 years ago in honor of the Greek Goddess Athena. You cannot afford to miss this site. It is among the top must-see in Athens in 2 days.

9:30 AM Temple of Athena Nike

This is another major temple dedicated to Goddess Athena. However, the uniqueness of this temple is, the idol of Athena is displayed as victorious in the war. The Greek word “Nike” actually translates into “victory.” It stands on the edge of a high cliff and is placed at the southwest corner of Acropolis. It is the smallest temple in Acropolis constructed by Kallikrates, the same man who constructed the majestic Parthenon.

The construction of the temple was finished by 420 BCE. On the southern wall, you can see the sculpture of Greeks fighting with the Persians, and on the other side, you can find Greeks fighting with other warriors. As you climb up the wall, you can see several poses of Athena, most notably being a pose where Nike is seen to adjust her sandal. The interior designs are relief and charming.

10:30 AM Theater of Dionysus

If you are wondering about the first theater in the world, this is it! The Theater of Dionysus is located at the foot of Acropolis, where you can sit on the steps and admire like the audience. Another one on of those cool places not to much on the things to do in Athens in 2 days.

11:00 AM Areopagus or Mars Hill

This is a sweet spot to view the whole length and breadth of the majestic Athens. At this spot, Apostle Paul had given a sermon

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of Heaven and Earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.”

This was some historical fact to cater to your curiosity!

11:15 AM Plaka

In the Plaka neighborhood, you will find a plethora of restaurants, bars, and cafes. You can have Greek salads with baklava and delicious Greek yogurt with honey. For tips on what to eat see this cool Athens food guide. This place is definitely must see in Athens in 2 days.

1:15 PM Temple of Zeus

Out of 104 columns, only 16 of them are present. 2 columns are present in the southwest corner and the other 13 in the southeast. Here, one column will be seen to have fallen, which has a history behind it. Due to a major earthquake in the 19th century, one of the columns toppled. The temple is around 2500 years old! It is also known by the other name, “Olympieion.” The architect responsible for its architecture is Roman emperor Hadrian. Although the kind of Syria started the work in 174 BCE, his death resulted in a halt. Hadrian, the great Philhellene, completed the magnificence. It is the largest temple in the city and one of the greatest temples ever built in ancient history.

2:30 PM Hadrian’s Arch

The Roman emperor Hadrian constructed the Arch in 131 AD. It was constructed as a wall separating new Athens from the old. It is located in the south of the National Gardens at the entrance of Temple of Olympian Zeus at Amallias Avenue. On the side of the arch, you will find these words

“This is Athens, the former city of Theseus.” The other side not facing Acropolis reads

“This is the city of Hadrian and not of Theseus.” It is a 59 ft gate made of marble.

Pro tip: When you come down from the Acropolis you will notice plenty of restaurants you can take your pick and grab a quick bite and hate out to the next stop on the Athens itinerary.

4:00 PM Athens National Gardens

If you want a welcome respite of calmness from the noisy crowds that you have will no doubt have encountered in Acropolis, walk past the Parliament building. You can take a stroll here at the beautiful green gardens, which exit to the Panathenaic stadium. It is located at a stone’s throw from Syntagma metro station. The garden has a glorious history behind it. It was named as “The garden of Amalia.”

Amalia was a queen who was the wife of King Otto. She is said to have spent at least 3 hours a day taking care of the garden! When you enter the garden from one of the seven entrances, Vasilissis Amalias Avenue entrance, a 25-meter high Washingtonia Palm trees will steal your attention. The royal highness herself planted the majestic trees! The garden has around 7000 trees, 40000 bushes, and other plants of 519 species. Catering to your enjoyment, the place also has a children’s library along with a cafe.

5:00 PM Syntagma Square

Syntagma square is the heart of Athens. It is Greek for Constitution Square. The first Royal modern Greek king, Otto, in the year 1843, christened the place. Here, you can witness the ceremonial changing of Guards, which is a necessary watch ritual. They perform at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. On Sundays, you can see them wearing a traditional Greek war outfit from the 1821 era. On weekdays, you can observe their normal modern attire. The uniqueness of these soldiers lies in the fact that they remain stationary for 1 hour. After every 1 hour, they change their positions.

6:00 PM Panathenaic Stadium

It was here at this stadium where the first modern Olympics took place in the 19th century. It is also known as Kallimarmaro. It is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. Having been excavated in the year 1869, the surprising part is, the marble structure is still standing even after a big 2000 years! Though some modifications have been made, it is clear enough to see how it stood the test of time.

Day 2 In Athens – Places To Visit

9:00 AM Monastiraki Market

There are many things to do in Athens in 2 days! If you are asking yourself what to do in Athens in 2 days, you can start your Day 2 by exploring Monastiraki Market. Whichever side you turn, you will find a plethora of markets and shopping centers. Even if you are not buying anything from here, it is recommended to explore this unique place still and maybe even pick up a Greek souvenir or two.

In Monastiraki square, you will find Athens flee market where you find splendid souvenirs and outdated electronics. While making your way inside the flea market, you will come across Ancient Agora. This place may seem peaceful now, but historically, it was a busy commercial place with bustling people gossiping and shopping around. Historically speaking, the Ancient Agora was a place for political gatherings, and Roman Agora located on the eastern side was a marketplace.

You can easily access Roman Agora from the Ancient Agora towards the east side or walk 2 minutes from the Monastiraki metro station. The Roman Agora was constructed with the funds of Augustus and Julius Caesar in around the first century BC.

1:00 PM Adrian’s Library

Located in the northern corner of the Roman Agora, the library of Adrian houses not only books but also legal state archives. It is the largest library in all of Athens. It was constructed in 132 BCE by Roman emperor Hadrian as a plan for rebuilding the city. Admission to this site can be granted with a 30 EUR Acropolis combo ticket permitting entry to this one and five other sites. The library is built in an area of 10000 sq. km.

3:00 PM Temple of Hephaestus

Located just above the Ancient Agora, this temple has its awe. It is, in fact, the best-preserved ancient temple in the whole of Greece. This temple is dedicated mainly to Hephaestus, the God of Fire. Talented Iktinus, who also contributed to Parthenon, designed it in 450 BC. Its sculptures were made up of Parian marble while its structure was from Pentelic marble. Reconstruction and excavations at this historical site are still carried out to preserve the beautiful History.

4:00 PM Adrianou Street

Being one of the oldest commercial streets in Athens, Adrianou street is unlike any street in your country. Here, people from other countries in the world take a stroll and relax. The street has a wide range of shops and stalls. In case you feel hungry and tired, try grabbing a delicious coffee!

5:00 PM National Archaeological Museum

The National Archaeological Museum in Athens is the largest in all of Greece and is considered one of the most important museums devoted to Greek history. It was founded in the year 1829 after a revolutionary struggle between Ottoman and the Greeks. You can find more than a whopping number of 11000 exhibits here, ranging from the prehistoric era to late antiquity.

It will cost you around 10 EUR to explore it. One of the most prominent artifacts to be displayed here is the Antikythera Mechanism. It is believed to be the world’s first computer and was lying under the sea for more than 2000 years! One notable artifact is the Mask of Agamemnon, which is a golden death mask. It is believed to cover the face of a dead person.

Getting Around In Athens

The best way to get around Athens is by walking! You can get a great vibe from the city by exploring on foot. The entire Acropolis, as an archaeological site, has great sight watching to offer. The area can be explored on foot without any requirement of transportation. For getting around the city, the metro is the quickest and the efficient way. It is easier to travel around Athens in metros than in Paris! Syntagma station at the heart of Athens will not only be convenient for you but also a wonder.

The station is a display of wonderful artifacts and antiquities! Unfortunately, the bus in Athens as transport is not convenient, as the bus tops may seem hidden and difficult to find without the help of locals. Although the transportation system has improved since the 2004 Olympics, there is still room for improvement. Instead of the bus, you can take a ride in trolleys and trams, both of which are very affordable. In 2018, even though Uber has been suspended in Greece, taxis are available 24/7.

Best Time to Visit Athens

The months of July and August can see a temperature spike of more than 40 degrees Celsius. Instead of dropping a visit in the blazing hot summer, it is best to visit in April and June when the temperatures hover around 20 to 25 degrees. If you want to experience the best sightseeing, November can be your best bet, but you will need to be prepared for cold nights and heavy rains.

Best Greek Beers To Check Out In Greece! (That’s Right, It’s Not Just About The Wine!)

February 18, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

greek beers list

Mythos beer – among the very famous and popular Greek beer brands.

Perhaps beer may not be the first thing that comes to mind when someone thinks of a Greek beverage. But, it is actually an important part of the culture in the sunny land. The history of beer in Greece goes a long way back, however, we could not say the same about local brewing, which is relatively recent. The beverage was widely consumed in Ancient Greece, although not brewed domestically. As time went by, beer consumption increased and various breweries opened throughout the country.

The first ones were founded around the end of the 19th century. However, the multinational giants still play an important role in the economy of Greek beer. Heineken and Carlsberg bought out the national beers Fix and Mythos and possess a big chunk of control in the sphere. One of the most popular Greek bear brands and among the best beer in Greece.  It is worth mentioning that Fix and Mythos are still widely consumed and served in most of the cafes and restaurants. Nevertheless, the Greeks are developing a taste for home-grown varieties as they discover more and more unique flavours that the emerging independent breweries offer. You can master the art of Greek drinking as you take in the sights.

Before we explore the current beer affairs in Greece, let’s take a closer look at its history. According to some sources and archaeological finds, Thrace was one of the very first locations in Europe where beer fermentation took place.

King Otto, the first king of Greece, settled in the country in 1833 and brought his personal brewmaster with him, Herr Fuchs, a Bavarian who stayed in Greece after Otto’s departure and introduced Greece to beer, under the label Fix. It is evident, therefore, that beer is a crucial member of the Greek community.

Now that we know a little bit about its history, let’s look at some of them as we explore everything related to Greek beer culture!

Solo (Σολο)

The makers of Solo describe each type of Solo beer as “a craft beer with soul”. The Cretan microbrewery operates between Heraklion and the small village of Alagni, and their delightful motto is “Good beer is a human right”. If you are a Pilsner kind of person, make sure to try the Jikiun Triple Decoction Imperial Pilsner.

However, definitely do not limit yourself to these few types, if you get a chance, explore as many flavours as you possibly can, and if you’re not sure what to go for, simply ask the locals!

Beer culture In Greece

Is shifting. The new generation was not satisfied with the lack of unique flavours in the country and started taking the matter into their own hands, fueled by their passion for beer. After all, isn’t it time to pair that marvelous cuisine with some fresh local beverage to surprise those taste buds? A strong Greek patriotism is a contributing factor to the surging demand for a local taste, with many people seeking to purchase stuff that is brewed on Greek soil. All in all, even though the craft beer scene constitutes a small portion of the nation’s total consumption, the future of craft beer seems bright in Greece, with hopefully many more novelties to come and yet to be discovered!

According to the experts, fresh Greek beer contains all the nutritional value of the grains: “the beer that we produce contains only malt from barley, hops, yeast and water.” It’s produced using traditional methods: it’s fermented and aged in specially-refrigerated tanks, fermentation happens at 15 degrees and the maturing process lasts from one to four weeks.

In general, the Greeks drink beer to be social and relax, rather than to get drunk so it is not frowned upon for parents to drink in front of their children and the beverage normally comes in 0.5L bottles or smaller, 0.33L cans or bottles, and contain around 5% alc. volume.

The festival lasts for 5 days, during which visitors are welcome to attend various events and observe many local producers present their products, as well as purchase them. Given the direct communication between buyers and sellers, it is a great opportunity to learn about the brewing process as well as all other beer-related things.

In addition, the attendees can also explore local cuisine, traditional dishes and buy local products during the event while also enjoying live entertainment and even free Wi-Fi in the area.

In 2020, the Festival is going to take place between 23rd – 27th of September in Arillas, Corfu.

Mythical, sunny, joyful and convivial: Greece is unique! It is the place to discover the origins of our civilization, to be subjugated by the charm of temples that have stood for over a thousand years, to admire the artistic masterpieces of the ancient world. But it is also a country where you can indulge in idleness, taking a dip in the bluest sea in Europe and cheerful dinners in delicious traditional restaurants, or indulge in a wild nightlife. Beaches, museums, ancient cities, traditional villages, a metropolis that combines ancient and modern in a fascinating mix: nothing is really missing in Greece!

Visiting Greece is wonderful, in all seasons. But pay attention to the summer season, it is very hot and we advise you to bring sunscreen and a hat, always useful not to risk a sunstroke when you visit the temples.

Greece is a very tourist destination not only for those who do classical studies, it is the cradle of history and ours too. Greece is the cradle of culture.

You will walk where many years ago the most cultured Greek philosophers, walked.

Each of us has travel dreams and if yours is to go to Greece, let yourself be guided by your emotions. Marvel at a sunset in beautiful Athene, enjoy a cruise on the smaller islands and live the evening with friends.

Greece is a perfect destination for everyone and we hope with this article that we have helped you in your travel experience.

How To Get From Athens Airport To City Centre

Athens Airport is located in the suburban town of Spata, and its official name is “Eleftherios Venizelos” or the Athens International Airport. It usually takes 45 minutes to get the centre of the city since it is situated some 27 km away. Now, talking about Athens City Centre, it is a hub to many amazing café houses, museums, and much more.

You can enjoy attractions like the Acropolis Museum, Syntagma Square, Ancient Agora of Athens, Temple of Olympian Zeus, and more, all of which are a must-see on any Athens itinerary. If you are wondering about how to get from Athens airport to the City Centre, below are the options for buses, taxis, and metro services. You can even opt for a shuttle service too.

How To Get From Athens Airport To City Centre

Getting To Athens City Centre From The Airport By

There are a variety of options for getting to the city centre, from buses, trains transfers as well as rental cars too. In addition, you can check Omio which outlines all the options with costs and journey time too.

Bus

The bus will take a total time of 55 minutes to cover a distance of 9 km. The is also a 24-hours express bus service is available for passengers. The frequency of the bus is every 5 minutes to shuttle the tourists to the City Centre. It may be the cheapest travel option but not the convenient one since it takes a long time because of the waiting time and time taken to travel to the heart of the city.

The best thing about this mode of transportation is it is available during the holiday season too. The cost of one way per is roughly about £5. So, if you are new to the city and on a shoe-string budget, then the bus is the best option for you.

Taxi

The taxi is one of the fastest options to get from Athens airport to the City Centre. You can hire a taxi at any time from outside the airport as they operate 24 hours a day. The journey takes just 25 minutes to reach the City Centre avoiding good traffic.

But, the cost of the taxi varies between day and night tariffs. During the day, you would be looking in the region of £34, and at night, you have to pay somewhere around £49. Well, the cost varies according to the type of taxi you are hiring. The day tariffs operate from 05:00 am to 12am and the night tariffs are from 1:00 am to 04:59 am.

In Athens, yellow taxis are standard ones, whereas the black taxis are the private hire, which can cost you twice the amount of the yellow taxis. To avoid any communication or monetary issues with the airport taxi drivers, it is better if you can book them in advance.

Transfers

There are also options for airport transfers via a minibuses or private vehicle. These chauffeur services are available by pre-booking online

The transfers take almost 45 minutes to ferry a person from the Athens airport to the City Centre that includes the waiting time too. The benefit of taking special transfer is you can get their services at any time of the day or during the night. It is the safest option for families and solo travelers who are new to the city. It may cost you £10 per person for up to 3 people, and the rates will increase with number of passengers for some options.

Therefore, if you are looking for economical ways to go from Athens airport to the City Centre, apart from the above, you also have the option to use the metro too. The metro takes almost 50 minutes to reach the City Centre from Athens Airport. The train fare costs is just under £10, and if you are traveling with children below the age of 6 years, then it is free for them. The metro operates between 6:30 am to 11:35 pm.

Visiting this culturally diverse country can be as affordable or as lux as your budget will allow. The best time to visit Greece I have found to be is Spring, mid-summer and autumn.

Greece Itinerary - The Perfect Itinerary For Athens Santorini And Mykonos

An Athens, Santorini And Mykonos Itinerary In 10 Days

No matter how much time you have, Greece has so much to offer that you would never be able to do justice to completely visiting this country.

However, I have a 10-day itinerary planned for you, covering the three major cities and visiting the maximum places. Start your journey from Athens and then head to Santorini; followed by Mykonos.

You also have the options of doing Athens, Mykonos and then Santorini. I have a post on how to get from Athens to Mykonos and another on how to get from Mykonos to Santorini.

You will explore the mainland as well as explore Cyclades; the most famous group of islands in the Aegean Sea and among the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean.

Cool white and blue coloured Cycladic architecture, stunning coastlines and amazing beaches. I have also shared a travel guide for Santorini as well as a 3 day Santorini itinerary that will complement this post as well as provide more details on daily activities to consider for the Athens, Santorini and Mykonos itinerary.

If you would rather everything was arranged for you, I would recommend checking out the 8 Day Aegean islands tour of Athens, Mykonos and Santorini. It runs from April to October and can be changed to fit around your preferences.

Athens: days 1-2

Athens is the capital of Greece and one of the oldest cities in the world; it is packed with historical monuments as well as has a bustling nightlife.

Therefore, you would need two days at best to explore this city. In Athens, you can find a lot of hotels in many budgets but if possible make sure you pick a hotel with a roof terrace or view.

Nothing beats a glass of wine in the evening with a view of the Acropolis in the distance.  The below can also be done as stand alone if you have 2 days in Athens or if you have more time and can do 2 or even 4 days in Athens, I have also added a couple of tips on the best day trips from Athens you can do beyond the travel tips on how to spend 2 days in Athens.

Day 1 in Athens

Start your day early and have a wholesome breakfast and head out for a full day of exploring.

In Greece, you will never have a shortage of food and food options; delicious food for people with all kinds of taste buds. Most hotels will offer free breakfast but failing that cafes and restaurants are plenty.

Whether you only have time for an Athens itinerary or more this is one place not to miss on your travel plans for Athens.  Head to Syntagma Square.

It is one of the most important squares in Athens and is flocked with tourists and locals all the time. This is the center of the city.

Formerly a palace, the Parliament building and the square in front of it have been the ground of many political events.

In fact when we visited there were demonstrations in and around the square.  Starting your day from here is to introduce you to Greek culture and society and without further ado, head to Acropolis to explore the ancient ruins there. I shared more pictures from our explorations of Athens here and here.

Greece Itinerary - The Perfect Itinerary For Athens Santorini And Mykonos

Even if you are not a fan of historical places; no trip to Athens is complete without exploring the Acropolis since it is one of the most iconic attractions of Greece.

Entering into Acropolis Hill(entrance from Dionysiou Arepagitou Street) requires tickets and before doing that you can pay a visit to Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the ancient theatre and a good spot for taking pictures.

As you climb the hill to the Acropolis, history unfolds before you. Make sure you have ample time (about three hours would suffice) to explore and do justice to these remnants of past and also wear something comfortable since you would have to walk a lot.

There is also the Acropolis museum when additional artifacts of the Ancient Agora. There are amazing spots for pictures as you head to the top as well as cool views from the top. Parthenon and Erectheum are popular among tourists for taking pictures.

When you are done with exploring the Acropolis, take a stroll around Plaka and absorb the peace and serenity of that neighborhood.

When you exit the Acropolis and head back down you will find yourself in Monastiraki Flea Market; there is hustle; there is bustle, food, people and culture.

You can also buy your trip souvenirs from here. With all that walking you may have worked up an appetite.

Plaka and Monastiraki have plenty of cafes and restaurants serving amazing food where you can taste the traditional Kebab and souvlaki.

As well as shops, both Plaka and Monastiraki contain endless historical sites from different eras can civilisations; from pre-historic, Greek, Roman and Ottoman

Day 2 in Athens

The first day in Athens was bent towards exploring the city and its historical sites, dedicate your second day to shopping and laid-back exploring because in your next two destinations, you would not get time and energy to do shopping.

Ermou street is located opposite to Acropolis and is home to international brands as well as locally owned ventures.

Spend your day in Varvakios Food Market, a food lover’s paradise, where you will devour some of the freshest and most wholesome meals of your life.

Stroll the Voukourestiou Street, treat yourself to a bit of luxury as this street is filled with shops leaning towards the expensive side. Explore the boutiques in Kolonaki and Psyri and also get a taste of Greek fine dining and live jazz bars.

Note: Getting around Athens is really easy, the metros are really easy to use as are taxis which are plenty.

Have More Time In Athens? Consider These Day Trips From Athens

  • A day trip to Delhi
  • A day trip to greek islands like Hyrda, Paros or Aegina
  • A day trip to Mycenae or even Meteora.
  • A day trip to Temple of Olympian Zeus and Olympic Stadium.
  • A day trip to the Temple of Poseidon.

There are plenty of options for DIY tours as well as those arranged by tour companies. To make the most of your time and travel between sights I would highly recommend doing day trips from Athens as transportation as well as a guide are provided. With some also providing food.

Things To Do In The Evening In Athens

Athens has a vibrant nightlife. Only a short walk from Monastiraki is Thissio. Here you will find restaurants and taverns lined up along Dionyssiou Areopagitous Street with many having an amazing view of the Acropolis.

Here you can also find nightclubs and bars to experience Athens nightlife. If that is not your cup of tea there is also an open-air cinema in the summer months.

In addition to Monastiraki, Gazi and Thissio(Thiseio), you also have Psyrri district where you can enjoy dinner and dance to live Greek music.

If you want to experience Athens nightlife like a local then head to Gazi. This is where locals hang out for clubbing, live music from jazz to rock and then some. For more tips on things to do in Athens at night check out my post.

For something understated but upscale head to Kolonaki with more restaurants and bars. If you are visiting Athens in the summer there are festivals you can also check out. Like Summer Nostos Festival, Plissken Festival, Rockwave Festival.

Where To Stay In Athens

There are plenty of places to stay in Athens covering all budgets. I will cover more of this in later posts including tips with a full list of things to do in Athens, but would really recommend a hotel with a view of the Acropolis on the roof terraces it looks so beautiful when lit up in the evening.

Greece Itinerary - The Perfect Itinerary For Athens Santorini And Mykonos

Santorini: days 3-6

Whenever you think of Greece, the whitewashed houses of Santorini and its clean sandy beaches come to your mind.

The island of Santorini is an ideal honeymoon destination and you would have to use a ferry from Athens to reach here and check in to your hotel. I have shared tips on how to get from Athens to Santorini on the blog.

Day 1 in Santorini

Oia would be your first destination in Santorini. It is a coastal village where all houses are whitewashed and are carved into rugged clifftops.

Have breakfast in any of the eateries in this small town. Oia is filled with small book shops and galleries.

However, for those who are not interested in shopping, you can walk down the village, sit, relax in the blowing winds, and absorb the magnificent view from the caldera.

Since it is a coastal establishment, there is one Maritime Museum as well, exhibiting local seafaring history.

In my recent post I shared tips on how to get around Santorini but the majority of towns like Oia and Fira don’t really require you to have a car as they are very walkable.

For the other towns buses and taxis are accessible. Check out my post for additional information.

Greece Itinerary - The Perfect Itinerary For Athens Santorini And Mykonos

Spend the rest of your day in Fira, the capital of Santorini which is much alike yet modern and more developed from Oia.

Fira also has a lot of small shops, restaurants and bars. You can get majestic views of the island from this place.

Especially, spending your evening in Fira would allow you to witness the most glorious sunset of your life, at the edge of an island.

For dinner, descend to the charming port of Ammoudi  Bay and have a taste of the fresh produce from the Mediterranean sea.

Having a dip into the crystal-clear water at night would set you up for the mood. Ammoudi Bay is great for having a night out for party, food and drinks.

For more tips on where to eat, I shared a post of my top restaurants in Santorini to check out.

Day 2 in Santorini

For your second day in Santorini, explore the archaeological site of Akrotiri. This town is home to ruins from the Minoan period.

Exploring these ruins won’t take much time. Most people come to this town just for the ruins and then head out to the beaches as there isn’t much to do in the area.

The population here mostly consists of farmers. However, strolling here and there for a while could bring you some refreshment and relaxation. Head to the red beach which is one of the most unique beaches in Greece.

Greece Itinerary - The Perfect Itinerary For Athens Santorini And Mykonos

As beautiful as this beach is there aren’t a lot of activities to do at the Red Beach but it’s popular with sunbathers and light swimming.

If you want more activities, I would suggest heading towards Perissa. The village and beach offer more, there are shops, cafes, clubs for evening entertainment.

Perissa is developed and the main attraction here is the black sand beach. There are different water activities you can try apart from swimming in the deep blue waters.

There are shops offering diving and other water activities The night time at Perissa beach is pretty crowded, with people pouring in and out of restaurants, shops and nightclubs. For more tips, I have a post on the best beaches in Santorini.

Day 3 in Santorini

What’s the point of visiting an island if you’re not going on a cruise? So, your day three in Santorini would compromise of a full day catamaran tour exploring the Aegean Sea.

If you are going with a partner or family; sailing whole day on a boat gives you time to bond and cherish each other’s company.

There are a lot of sailing companies in Santorini that offer full day catamaran tours with different packages. I shared a post on our Santorini sunset cruise around the island.

Where To Stay In Santorini

I have covered where to stay in Santorini extensively on the blog. From tips on the best areas to stay in Santorini to covering tops on cheap hotels in Oia as well as cheap hotels with views of the Caldera and more.

There are plenty of options to choose from; luxury suites with private pool to affordable places to stay that won’t break the bank whiles still allowing you to have insta-moments.

Mykonos: days 7-10

Mykonos, just like Santorini is another Greek island that is a hit with tourists. The island is known for its white homes, windmills, majestic sea view and night scenes.

From Santorini, a ferry would take you to Mykonos in about 3 hours. That is why get a ferry early morning so that you could start exploring Mykonos pretty early. I shared a post on how to get from Santorini to Mykonos and vice versa.

Day 1 in Mykonos

Since the whole Greece trip might have gotten you tired by now, you can spend this day doing light strolling, exploring the city, absorbing the cultural vibes. Get to Mykonos old Town. It is famous for its cobbled narrow streets.

That’s a change when you are used to the city scrappers and take in this simplicity as much as you can. In these cobbled streets, there are hidden gems of eateries producing authentic Greek culinary wonders.

In the evening, sip onto fine vine, sitting in a balcony restaurant, under the starry sky, looking over the coastal lights.

Day 2 in Mykonos

The Greek islands have to withstand some pretty strong winds. Hence windmills are an iconic symbol of these islands. Visit the historical windmills of Kato Myli which are nothing like the traditional windmills.

They were constructed in the 16th century and have straw roof tops. These windmills overlook the coastal town of Little Venice. Visit this town as watching the sunset or sunrise at this port is one of the main attractions here. This town consists of colorful houses, restaurants, antique shops and bars.

Armenistis Lighthouse is present on the North-Western tip of the island. Pay a visit to this lighthouse. This lighthouse is a local landscape trademark, it offers great views of the Aegean Sea.

Mykonos is home to 365 churches, one for each day of the year. Head to Paraportiani church, which is one of the most visited and photographed religious mausoleum here.

Greece Itinerary - The Perfect Itinerary For Athens Santorini And Mykonos

Day 3 in Mykonos

Spend your third day in Mykonos exploring the Delos island. It is known to be the mythical birthplace of the Greek God Apollo and Artemis.

Although it is a tiny island, you can spend your whole day here. Explore the ruins of Propylaea and the sanctuary of Apollo. Hike up to the mount Kythnos to get a view of the neighboring islands and the sea.

Day 4 in Mykonos

Mykonos is famous for its clean, sandy beaches with deep blue, fresh waters. There are a lot of beaches in Mykonos. You can either spend your whole day at one beach or explore them one by one.  Ornos beach is a peaceful family friendly beach along with many tavernas. Platys Gialos Beach has the best waters. It is lined with luxury hotels and a mini market. Paradise beach is the most fun to go. A lot of water sports, party and music; and as the sun goes down the crowd as well as the clamor increases.

Where To Stay In Mykonos

I have shared a complete guide on the best areas to stay in Mykonos with tips on hotels in various budgets for each of the areas.

Alternative Itinerary For Athens, Santorini and Mykonos

Option 1: If you are short on time I would recommend cutting down your Greece itinerary to 2 days in Athens, 2 days in Santorini then a ferry to Mykonos for a day of exploring and then catching the flight back to Athens for your flight out to your country of origin. This would give you about 5-7 day itinerary for Athens, Santorini and Mykonos.

Option 2: If you have more time then I would suggest you also add Crete. The beauty of the Cyclades is that most have easy access to ferry options just make sure you plan and check the ferry dates when planning as some ferry services operate on specific dates in the week.

So you can do 2 weeks where you do 3 days in Athens, 3 days in Santorini, 3 days in Mykonos and 3 days in Crete.

The other 2 days will be spent resting and light exploring of the city you are departing from as well as arriving in by ferry. That gives you about 14 days itinerary for Athens, Santorini, Mykonos and Crete.

There you have it tips on how to do a 10 day Greece trip with plenty of options whether you have 5 days, 7 days or 8 days. Everything you need to considering when planning a Greece vacation especially when considering 10 day greek island hopper to the most popular islands in the country.

Greek Island Hopping Itineraries: Athens Mykonos Santorini Vacation Packages

If you have a set time and want to make the most of your trip to Greece, I would highly recommend Greek Island hopping vacation packages.

Currently, Contiki Tours does a 12 day Greece itinerary covering Athens, Mykonos, Santorini and Ios before returning to Athens for your flight out. This gives you 2 nights Athens, 3 nights in Mykonos, 3 nights in Santorini and 3 nights in Ios then returning to Athens for 1 night.

The Greek islands have much more to offer than most would think: archaeological treasures, history, culture, dramatic landscapes overlooking an azure coloured sea and, of course, delicious food.

For something a little different, Exodus Travels has a 7 days Greek Island Hopping itinerary covering Santorini, Paros and Naxos. With all accommodation on the islands and transportation included.

Then there is GAdventures with runs three package vacations to Greece. Two 8 days trips and one 10 days Greece itinerary sailing tour.

All are some group tours allowing you to meet people as well as explore on your own when you are on the islands and off the boat. On average 10 days, Greece cost of the trip is about £800-1000.
