If you are an outdoor enthusiast like me, you will certainly be looking forward to enjoying some hiking trails in Columbus, Ohio.

Located along the Scioto River, the city is home to numerous parks with water fountains and walking trails. I love a good city break but love nature trails even more.

You may have already read my adventure on the Norweigian hiking trails of Trolltunga, Mount Ulriken or even the Walsh mountain of Snowdonia so while I was in Columbus I was not going to miss out on some of the hiking in Ohio. So, are you curious to learn more? Keep reading and check our list with the best trails for hiking near Columbus.

The Best Hikes In Columbus Ohio

I love the easy access Columbus has when it comes to nature trails and jus places to unwind and escape the city. Also, you dont necessarily have to live in Columbus to enjoy these.

They are accessible from other cities too not just those looking for hiking around Columbus, so if you are looking for the best hiking spots in Ohio, these will very much be appearing on many lists for trails in the state. Ohio’s trails are among America’s best day hikes.

Ash Cave – Hocking Hills State Park

Situated just over an hour away from Ohio, Hocking Hills State Park is a must-see for anyone looking for a quiet escape in the wilderness.

Home to 25 miles of hiking trails, numerous stunning waterfalls and unusual caves, the park will allow you to recharge your batteries while admiring the beautiful natural surrounding.

Ash Cave is by far the most popular and spectacular tourist sight in the park. The half-mile hike is relatively easy, yet absolutely stunning as you are going through a narrow gorge before reaching the largest recess cave in the state park. This was definitely one of my favourites as we also did horse riding nearby.

Highbanks Metro Park – Overlook and Dripping Rock Trail

If you do not have much time and would like to stay within Columbus, you should go to Highbanks Metro Park.

Covering a total territory of 1000 acres, the park is home to approximately 10 trails. You will find it difficult to believe that you are still in the city, while hiking through the deep forest and enjoying the scenic views of Olentangy River.

One of the most popular paths in the park is the 5-mile Overlook and Dripping Rock Trail. Start at the visitor center and follow the meandering trail to reach the Overlook Deck located on a 100-feet-tall-cliff above the river.

Blacklick Woods Metro Park – Beech Trail

Located on the outskirts of Columbus, Ohio, Baclick Woods Metro Park is particularly convenient for people staying on the eastern side of the city. The park covers only around 650 acres, but it is a great spot for a nature escape away from the busy city life.

Most trails are very short and easy, which makes the park a perfect family-friendly picnic area. Follow the Beech Trail as it winds through the forest, enjoy the beautiful fields of spring wildflowers and find a quiet spot for your picnic lunch.

Alum Creek State Park – Rocks and Roots Trail

Regardless if you are looking for a beach spot, place to try some outdoor activities or some hiking trails, Alum Creek State Park has it all.

Spreading on a territory of around 4630 acres, the park has a large water reservoir, which is widely visited by fishermen, boat owners and swimmers.

Besides the water activities, though, the park has a system of hiking trails, the most popular of which is the Rocks and Roots path.

The moderate 6-mile hike will take you through the forests, while offering beautiful views of the lake. If you enjoy bird watching, make sure to bring your binoculars as well.

Scioto Trail State Park – The DeBroad Vista Trail

Are you looking for an off-the-beaten-path location that is close enough to Columbus, Ohio, but at the same time it will provide you with a less touristy and more secluded nature experience?

Scioto Trail State Park is the place for you! Situated within the Scioto state forest, the park covers just 218 acres, which makes is a little hidden oasis perfect for a picnic or a short hike.

As the area is quite popular among bikers, you should certainly follow the hikers only The DeBroad Vista Trail.

Admire the stunning vistas of the Scioto River Valley on this 2.5 hiking trail through the peaceful and quiet state park. The scenery alone was enough to add this on the list of the coolest hiking trails near Columbus.

Scioto Trail State Park

Salt Fork State Park – Stone House Loop Trail

Approximately an hour and a half away from Columbus, Ohio, you will find the biggest state park in the state. Spreading on a territory of almost 17,300 acres, Salt Fork is the place to be if you are a sport enthusiast.

From kayaking to fishing, the large water reservoir is the best place to have a fun day filled with activities in the area.

Additionally, the park has around 11 trails to choose from. If your furry friends are visiting with you, make sure to head to Stone House Loop Trail, which is dog-friendly.

Rising Park – Mount Pleasant

Enjoy the breathtaking mountain scenery as the sun is setting behind the hills at Rising Park. Located in the town of Lancaster, the park is approximately 45 minutes drive from Columbus.

Rising Park offers a number of hiking trails as well as tennis courts, ponds and caves, however, the main attraction is the highest point – Mount Pleasant.

Make sure to head in the late afternoon to be able to admire the panoramic sunset views of green hills rising high above the town of Lancaster underneath. There is plenty on offer and among the best hiking spots in Ohio.

Gahanna Woods – Gahanna Woods Loop

The green nature and the colourful fields of wildflowers at Gahanna Woods will transfer you into a fairy tale world, while still being in the middle of the city.

This city park is a very popular urban getaway especially among families with small children. Visitors can choose between numerous shorter trails or they can follow the entire Gahanna Woods Loop for around 3 miles.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park – Brandywine Gorge Trail Loop

One of the most spectacular natural areas near Columbus, Ohio is Cyahoga Valley National Park. The massive park covers more than 32,900 acres and is a real hiking paradise.

Home to a huge diversity of flora and fauna, the park features deep green forests, beautiful winding rivers and stunning waterfalls.

Visitors can choose between 125 miles of hiking trails, however, the Brandywine Gorge Trail Loop is the one that deserves your attention the most. The moderately difficult 1.4 miles rocky trail will take you to a peaceful refreshing creek where you can even swim. Denison Biological Reserve – Woodcock Trail

If you are an animal lover, you should certainly plan a visit to Denison Biological Reserve. The park spans across 350 acres of quiet ponds, green forests, old plantations and colourful orchards.

All trails around the reserve are known to be extremely scenic with a high chance to take a quick glimpse of deer. Get a map at the entrance to easily navigate your way around the park.

If you are looking for an easy path, you can follow the Woodcock Trail, which has a boardwalk for a large portion of it and makes it conveniently accessible for the entire family.

Top 10 Places To Visit In Seattle

Zip by Pike Place Market

Pike Place Market is a public market at the Elliott Bay waterfront and is one of the most popular attractions in Seattle. The market was originally opened in 1907 and now is teeming with vendors, artisans and merchants. You can walk through the stalls of vendors selling everything from fresh produce, souvenirs, handmade crafts like soap and candles, florists, fresh meat and of course the iconic ‘flying fish’ of the marketplace.

Pop by the gum wall.

Not too far from Pike Place Market is the infamous, and slightly gross, “gum wall”. It is very Instagram-worthy and has become a strange icon of downtown Seattle. The location is 1428 Post Alley Seattle, WA 98101. What is it you might ask? Literally it is part of an alleyway that the walls have become covered in chewed gum. You can stop by and grab a picture and if you feel so inclined, add your piece of gum to the artistic walls.

Get sky high in The Space Needle

The Space Needle is the iconic symbol of Seattle and a visit to Seattle would not be complete without visiting this super unique structure. Built in 1962 for the World’s Fair it provides some great history from the mid-century modern era but most spectacularly, provides epic 360 views of Seattle. If you’re lucky and it’s a clear day in Seattle, you can even see as far as Mount Rainier in the distance. You can purchase tickets online or at the gate upon arrival.

Be mesmerized at the Chihuly Garden and Glass

If you’re at the Space Needle then you have to stop literally right next door at the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibit because it is absolutely breathtaking. You can purchase a separate ticket but there is a bundled ticket with the Space Needle that does save you a few bucks. If you don’t know Chihuly, you’ll be obsessed with him afterwards. He is a world-renown glassblowing artist who creates the most incredible works of blown glass. You can walk through the entire eight exhibits which are both indoors and outdoors and make sure you look upwards for some epic views of the space needle. They also host a lot of cool community classes and tours which can be found on their events calendar.

Find the Fremont Troll

The Fremont Troll is a public piece of art in the Fremont neighborhood that has become an icon. It was completed by four local artists and the giant lives under a bridge for people to find. Located at N 36^th Street Seattle, WA 98103 you can easily find him by walking.

Visit the original Starbucks and have a coffee flight

If you’re a coffee lover then you have to stop by the Starbucks Seattle Roastery. Here you’ll be able to take a tour of the roaster, sip a flight of coffee at the coffee bar, and learn about the history of the now coffee giant. It’s definitely worth a stop if you’re in Seattle or any of the other locations of their Roastery like Shanghai, Milano, Tokyo, New York and Chicago.

Go get fishy at the Seattle Aquarium

The Seattle Aquarium, located on Pier 59, is a public aquarium opened in 1977 and overlooks Elliot Bay. The aquarium has many aquatic animals on display including the adorable sea otter, the waddling puffin, and playful seals. Tickets can be purchased online for a discount or at the door at any time. This is a great thing to do on an especially rainy and cold day in Seattle to get out of the cold! This is also perfect for those looking for things to do with kids in Seattle.

Get a photo from Kerry Park

This is the shot everyone wants: the iconic shot of downtown Seattle including the space needle. Where does everyone get it you may ask? Well, from Kerry Park. Kerry Park is a small park on the south side of Queen Anne with pretty much the best view of Seattle. It’s very easily accessible and can be reached by car (highly recommended) or if you feel like breaking a sweat you could walk it. It gets super busy and parking is very limited so swing by early to get a great shot without having to park a few miles away. A good street address to put in your phone is 211 W. Highland Drive Seattle, WA 98119.

Take a sip on the Seattle Great Wheel

Think the London Eye except over the Elliott Bay. The Seattle Great Wheel is a gigantic ferris wheel at Pier 57 that overlooks Elliott Bay. You can take a ride in this 175 foot tall structure and it will give you some beautiful views of the city, the bay and the mountains in the distance. Oh and if you’re feeling super adventurous, they even have a glass bottom VIP cabin which provides views below you too! You can purchase tickets online or at the gate when you arrive.

Museum of Pop

This funky cool museum is dedicated to contemporary pop culture and has exhibits of all sorts of interesting subjects like video games, fantasy, tattoo artistry, and science fiction. Even if you don’t want to go in, it’s cool to stop by the building because it was designed by Frank Gehry and a really funky building.

Seattle has so many incredible things to experience from art to food to nature and this list just tickles the surface of all the incredible things you can experience. With so many things to do in Seattle, it’s no wonder so many people flock to this city. If you’re looking for your next vacation, this is it.

There are so many amazing places to visit in Chicago, whether exploring for a short trip or in for a longer stay. In addition there are also plenty of tours in Chicago to help you make the most of your visit.

Take a river cruise down Chicago River

One of the best ways to explore Chicago, get a lay of the land, and learn about its history is to take a boat tour of the river. One tour that is particularly great is an architecture river cruise.

This cruise lets you cruise down the Chicago River and see some of the city’s famous architecture by water. A guide is on board leading the 1-hour tour providing history and trivia about the buildings and sites such as the Navy Pier and the John Hancock Building.

The boats are equipped with restrooms and even better – a full bar! Cruises run daily from the Navy Pier and Michigan Avenue and tickets can be purchased online or in person.

Explore the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Ave)

Shop ‘til you drop on the Magnificent Mile. This upscale section of Chicago’s Michigan Avenue running form the Chicago River to Oak Street is known for its fabulous shopping, restaurants and high-end hotels.

See Millennium Park and take a picture with ‘the bean’

If you went to Chicago and didn’t take a picture with ‘the bean’, did you really even go to Chicago? Seriously, this is one of those Instagram-things you have to do when you’re visiting Chicago.

However Millennium Park has a lot more to offer than just the bean. It’s actually the northern section of Grant Park and renamed Millennium Park and filled with sculptures, fountains and even an open-air stage for concerts.

There are ample spots for the kids to play in playgrounds, park benches to sit on, beautiful gardens to walk through and in the winter even an ice skating rink. Lots of great thing to do here, so this is an absolute must!

Go to the Navy Pier

The Navy Pier is one of those iconic Chicago landmarks you need to visit. It’s a hotspot for tourists and families filled with little shops to purchase souvenirs, cafes and restaurants and even has a few small amusement ride for kids.

Or if you’re looking to get out of the elements, head inside to see a movie at the IMAX Theater. Kids can ride a ferris wheel, play at a mini golf course, or take a ride on swings.

There are also plenty of parks and gardens across the area adjacent for the pier to sit and enjoy the day or even pack a few snacks to refuel from your explorations.

Go to the Art Institute of Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the largest and oldest art museums in the country. Located in Grant Park, it has an incredibly impressive collection of some of the world’s most famous artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet and Rembrandt.

Originally constructed for the 1893 World Fair in Chicago, the building and the iconic two bronze lions that guard the entrance are spectacular to see for themselves.

Go to the Lincoln Park Zoo

The Lincoln Park Zoo is home to more than 1,100 animals and over 200 species and better yet – it’s free! Yup, a free zoo, one of the last of its kind.

Whether you love penguins, wolves, kangaroos, gorillas, flamingos, or polar bears, the zoo will provide excitement and awe to kids and adults alike.

The zoo is spread throughout indoor and outdoor exhibits in the shadows of the skyscrapers of downtown Chicago.

Catch a gab at Wrigley Field

Home to the Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field is a must for any baseball enthusiast out there. The field is historic and really beautiful, even if you’re not the biggest baseball fan.

If you happen to be in town when there’s a home game, definitely grab some tickets. There’s nothing more Americana than a box of Crackerjacks and a baseball game in a historic field!

Explore the Adler Planetarium

A unique experience in Chicago is to take a little science class as the Adler Planetarium. You can take a virtual tour through time and space in the Sky Theater, or explore the exhibits talking about meteorites and outer space.

If you’re a fan of space and space exploration, this is a really interesting place to visit. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or you can purchase them at the door.

Live on the edge at Willis Tower Skydeck

This one is for the daredevils out there! If you want to literally live on the ‘ledge’ then try out the Skydeck. The Willis Tower is 110 stories tall and the Skydeck is located on the 103^rd floor and offers incredible views of the city and beyond.

On a clear day, you can see up to 50 miles out which means you can see Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, pretty neat. However the biggest draw to Willis Tower is the clear glass balcony that extends off the building, literally standing over Chicago’s busy street 103 floor below.

The lines build up quickly, so it’s recommended to get there as soon as they open or even a little before to beat the queue.

Gangsters and ghosts tour of Chicago

It’s not a secret that Chicago’s history is full of colorful history of gangster and mob activity. Imagine the Roaring 20s and Chicago teeming with speakeasies, gangsters like Al Capone, and bootleggers running the city; it must’ve been a pretty wild time!

Take a guided 2-hour tour exploring Chicago’s dark past in some of its most mob-frequented areas and places. Some of the stops along the tour include The Loop (the area associated with the most crime and hauntings from the gangster era), Millennium Park, the Palmer House, and the Chicago Riverwalk.

Tickets can be purchased online and the departure point is at 71 E Wacker Dr. Chicago, IL 60601.

Silver Beach County Park

Obviously when you go to a lake town you want to experience the lake. Silver Beach Park is a beautiful and well-kept beach, probably one of the most popular in St. Joe.

There are a few playgrounds located next to the beach as well as a concession stand for those beach-time munchies. It costs $12 per vehicle to get to the park but is open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., offering a full day of fun in the sun.

Silver Beach Carousal + Water Fountain

Think of an old-time carousel ride you rode on as a kid, or maybe see in old-time movies; that’s what this carousel is. Your kids will love picking their favorite animal to ride from the up and down horses to the pandas and stationary sleighs.

It costs $3 per token for the kids. There is also an outdoor water fountain park for the kids to play in on those hot Michigan summer days.

Shopping in Downtown St. Joseph

The main street of St. Joseph is a great place to shop local. There are plenty of cute little boutiques for clothing, souvenirs, gourmet food, and home décor. It’s a great opportunity to pick up a birthday gift or if you’re really an early planner, maybe even a holiday gift for a friend or family member!

St. Joseph Lighthouse

Kids and adults alike will find it fun to go to the St. Joseph Lighthouse. Situated right on the lake, you can easily access the pier to walk to the lighthouse and see it from the outside.

Or, you can learn about the history of the lighthouse by taking a guided tour and climb to the top of the lighthouse and have great views of the lake and surrounding area!

Harbor Shores Golf Club

If golf is more your scene, then St. Joe has a great golf course for you! Harbor Shores Golf Club has the Jack Nicklaus course which is home to a PGA golf tournament. Go online or call to make a tee time and discuss any rental club needs. Tee up and enjoy the views as you play the course.

Hidden Pointe

Hidden Pointe is located in Benton Harbor and is a great gathering place for friends and family to enjoy some fun. Play 18-holes of mini golf, take a spin around the go kart track, grab an ice cream cone, or take a swing at the batting cages. Baguette De France. Absolutely wonderful sandwiches you can take to-go, the perfect thing to grab for a beach picnic lunch.
South Bend Chocolate Café. Located in downtown St. Joseph, this will satisfy any sweet tooth whether you want their gourmet chocolates, ice cream, or another sweet sugary treat.

221 Main. Located in downtown St. Joseph, this corner restaurant has over 120 whiskies to choose from! A casual pub feel, this offers a variety of food so it’s great to go when everyone wants something a little different.
The Lakehouse Bar + Grill. Who doesn’t love a great outdoor dining option? The Lakehouse has an awesome deck with some of the best patio vies of the city.

Silver Beach Pizza. It’s a local favorite and a must-eat on your trip to St. Joseph. They were also voted the best pizza in Southwest Michigan. It gets busy so a reservation is recommended which can be made online or via the phone. They have pizza obviously, but also have great salads, sandwiches and calzones.

The Buck Burgers + Brews. If you’re into beer, then this is your place. They have a huge selection of beer and a great rooftop to enjoy it. It’s a great place to kick back and relax with friends or family after a great day on the beach. Burgers and beers and a sunset, that’s a pretty good summer beach day on Lake Michigan.

Clifford’s Coffee Canal. Located right in Benton Harbor, this would be a great stop to combine with Hidden Pointe. It’s a quaint coffee shop with funky bright furniture, an outdoor patio overlooking the river and plenty of caffeine. They also serve breakfast and lunch so it’s a great stop for a little pick-me-up midafternoon.

The Livery. This place is super cool and in a 100-year-old stable converted into microbrewery and restaurant. Lots of handcrafted beers on tap and live music make it a great place to gather with friends after a day out on the water.

How To See Chicago In 2 Days – What To See Do And Eat

Ok lets get into this 2 day Chicago itinerary with top attractions and food spots and first day…

Day 1 In Chicago

Assuming you arrive pretty early in the day to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) or Chicago Midway (MDW) then you can hit the ground running. Luckily both Chicago airports offer a lot of direct flights from most major airports around the country.

In Chicago, I’d recommend not getting a rental car and instead take public transit like the subway, taxis or Ubers and walk as many of the attractions and places are walkable!

After you get into the airport, get your bag and either call an Uber or catch a taxi, head to the Hotel Cass or DoubleTree by Hilton – Magnificent Mile.

This is the perfect location to be based out of because you can walk to so many restaurants, bars, lounges, and other attractions. The DoubleTree is modern, clean and very well updated with all the latest amenities and updated in the latest trendy styles.

After you get checked in and freshen up as need be, time to find some nourishment… brunch! Here are a few great options in walking distance:

Wildberry Pancakes and Café. Obviously they have great pancakes, but they also have other breakfast and brunch staples to fill you up!
Beatrix. They have a wonderful brunch menu for both traditional and new cuisine.

The hotel’s convenient location on the Magnificent Mile is a great excuse to get out and get some steps and shopping in! The Magnificent Mile is considered an upscale section of Chicago’s Michigan Avenue which has all your shopping desires. Spend some time bopping into the different shops along the way and get in your retail therapy.

As you make your way down the Magnificent Mile, you’ll want to head in the direction of Millennium Park and the Art Institute of Chicago. Luckily Madison Avenue will lead you super close in that direction, close to the Crown Fountain. It’s about a 1-mile stroll but provides a lot of things to stop and see along the way so it’s worth it.

Once you get to Millennium Park there are a lot of options of things to see. First off, you have to go to ‘the bean’ and get a picture – it’s like a necessity when you visit! There are tons of beautiful gardens and walking paths in the park so take your time and enjoy the little oasis in the city.

Within Millennium Park is the Art Institute of Chicago which is one of the largest and oldest art museums in the country! It holds some incredibly impressive collections of the world’s most famous artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet and Rembrandt.

The building is impressive in and of itself, dating back to the 1890s for the World Fair. You could easily spend many hours here, so you may want to pick and choose what exhibits and styles you’d like to visit.

After your art education, you’ll probably want to grab some lunch as you head towards the water. Here are a couple options for lunch:

Miller’s Pub. An all-American restaurant with everything from beer, to steaks, to salads and everything in between.
Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria. Probably one of the most iconic deep-dish pizza joints in downtown Chicago.

After all that walking, it’s time to take a seat. Hop on one of the architecture river cruise boats and cruise down the Chicago River and see some of the city’s most famous architecture by water! This 1-hour guided tour will give you lots of information about the history of Chicago, its buildings and its unique culture.

The boats are equipped with restrooms and even better – a full bar! Cruises run daily from the Navy Pier and Michigan Avenue and tickets can be purchased online or in person. This is a great way to catch the beauty of the sunset and dusk in the Windy City.

Slip back to the hotel to change and freshen up and head out for a late-night appetizer or lite dinner and cocktails. Finish off your first day in Chicago at one of the following great eats:

Cindy’s. Great appetizers and cocktails with a spectacular view of the city.
London House (LH) Rooftop. Another fabulous eatery on the rooftop offering epic views of downtown Chicago.

Day 2 In Chicago

Your second full day in Chicago is packed, so start off with a filling breakfast to get the day started right. A few great options for breakfast are:

Do-Rite Donuts & Chicken. If you’re looking for a quick grab-and-go chicken sandwich or a donut, then this is your spot to stop and go.
Egg Harbor Café. A little more traditional and sit down, this place offers everything you want for breakfast and brunch.

Your first itinerary item of the day is going to the Willis Tower, what used to be the tallest building in the world. At 110 stories tall, this is one of the iconic buildings of the Chicago skyline.

The Skydeck.is located on the 103^rd floor of the Willis Tower and offers quite possibly the most spectacular views of the city and beyond. On a clear day, you can see up to 50 miles out which means you can see Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin!

If you really want to live on the edge, or should I say ‘ledge’, then gather your courage and step out on the glass ledge that juts out beyond the building, allowing you a 103 floor view straight down to the busy streets of Chicago.

You can pre-purchase tickets online or get them on-site however it’s a very popular attraction so get there early, even before the doors open if possible to avoid super long lines.

After taking your daredevil self for a spin, you can walk or take public transit to The Lincoln Park Zoo. Home to more 200 species and 1,100 animals, the zoo is full of endangered, exotic and native animals. They have penguins, polar bears, gorillas, and kangaroos just to name a few. Plan for a few hours here and grab lunch at one of the little cafes throughout the park.

Next, keep walking further north, or take an Uber or taxi and at least stop by Wrigley Field to appreciate its history and beauty. The field is really neat, even if you’re not a huge fan.

It would be awesome if it worked out if a game was going on while you were visiting; if there is, it’s definitely worth grabbing a few tickets and making a night out of hotdogs, popcorn and America’s pastime.

Located around the field are lots of sports bars and pubs to pop in and grab a pint while you’re out too, and most have some great memorabilia of the field!

You’ll want to take an Uber or taxi back towards town and for the final stop of your trip should be taking in Navy Pier. The Navy Pier is one of those iconic Chicago landmarks you need to visit.

It has little shops to purchase souvenirs, cafes and restaurants and even has a few small amusement ride for kids. Walk along the pier and the riverfront and enjoy your last few hours in downtown Chicago soaking up all the glory of the Windy City!

Best Time To Visit Chicago

My brother lives only a couple of hours drive from Chicago and I have seen enough pictures from him to know that winter is not the best time to visit Chicago! They can sometimes get ridiculous snowfall making exploring close to impossible.

So if you are heading to visit as a ‘tourist’, that is definitely not when you want to visit the city. Instead, the best time to visit would be, summer and Autumn. Also note that spring in Chicago can be unpredictable. Below are details on Chicago weather.

Spring: Spring in Chicago is perhaps the city’s most unpredictable season: Winter can last until April or even May. Thunderstorms can occur any time of the year, but are most prevalent in the springtime as the city’s central location within the United States, as well as its lakeside location, makes it a center of conflicts between large volumes of warm and cold air, which can trigger a wide variety of severe weather.

The most severe storms can contain large hail, damaging straight-line winds, flooding, and tornadoes. Temperatures vary tremendously in the springtime; at 100 °F (38 °C), March is the month with the greatest span between the record high and low. At O’Hare, temperatures as low as 7 °F (−14 °C) and 31 °F (−1 °C) have been recorded as late as April 7 and May 21, respectively.

Summer: On a typical summer day, humidity is usually moderately high, and temperatures ordinarily reach anywhere between 78 and 92 °F (26 and 33 °C). Overnight temperatures in summer usually drop to around 65–70 °F (18–21 °C), although even in July and August there can be several nights where the temperature drops below 60 °F (16 °C), particularly during the cooler summers.

Conversely, on the other extreme, temperatures can on a rare basis remain above 80 °F (27 °C) overnight, though this level of overnight warmth is generally limited to the city proper with its urban heat island effects along with Lake Michigan nearby.

Autumn: The extreme heat that Chicago is capable of experiencing during the height of the summer season can persist into the autumn season. Temperatures have reached 100 °F (38 °C) as late as September 7 (with 99 °F (37 °C) occurring as late as September 29), and temperatures have reached 90 °F (32 °C) as late as October 6, which occurred in 1963, with a temperature of 94 °F (34 °C) on that day.

Conversely, temperatures have dropped below freezing overnight as early as September 23, and temperatures below 0 °F (−18 °C) have arrived as early as November 23.

How To Get Around In Chicago – How To Get To Chicago

Getting Around Chicago: There taxis, Uber, intercity trains as well as the Chicago ‘L’ train system connecting the various suburbs of Chicago. I mostly used taxis, Uber and walking around Chicago during my stay.

How To Get To Chicago: While there are are plenty of ways to get to Chicago, my family and I drove to Chicago from Niles, Michigan. Its a few hours drive, we left in the morning and arrived with enough time to explore before my family went back to Michigan and I explored more of Chicago before leaving for Seattle a few days later.

You can also fly into Chicago by during this trip I flew out of Chicago so when it comes to transport from Chicago airport into the city that is fairly easy. I chose to take a cab to the airport to save time.

Where To Stay In Chicago

There are several areas to stay in Chicago and I will go into more detail in a separate post but for those on a short visit to Chicago, depending on your intentions I would recommend staying near Magnificent Mile. I found it easier to walk around to many of the tourist places and attractions as I stayed at Hotel Cass, a Holiday Inn Express Hotel. The location is just unbeatable and so were the rooms and food too. Close to everything you would want to see.

If you are of course staying longer than 2 days in Chicago, and in the city for nightlife and more of a local file then stay near Lakeview or Wrigleyville where there are plenty of nightclubs, bars and restaurants. Or stay near Lincoln Park where there are plenty of cultural attractions like the Chicago History Museum, ParkZoo as well as a bustling commercial street.

The Perfect Seattle Itinerary In 4 Days!

Seattle is one of those cities you could come back to over and over again and still find new and exciting corners to explore.

This city offers a blend of culture, architecture, technology advancements, and an epicurean dreamland. Here is a great 4-day Seattle itinerary guide to what to do, see and eat in Seattle to get your trip planning started.

A 4-Day Seattle Itinerary: What To D See And Eat

Below are tips on how to see Seattle in 4 days. Everything you need to know from how to get to Seattle, how to get around and places to visit in Seattle with a day by day itinerary plan.

DAY 1 In Seattle

Flying into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is pretty easy and direct for most major cities. The best part if you’re coming from the East Coast is that you leave early and you get into Seattle at a pretty good time, usually late morning or early afternoon, giving you plenty of time to have a pretty full first day. I had flown in from Chicago to Seattle.

Once you get in and get your bag you have two options: catch a rental car or Uber to the hotel, or rent a car. While you won’t need a rental car within the city, if you decide to take a day trip out to go hiking (which I highly recommend) then you might as well go ahead and snag a rental car. Check Seattle-Tacoma’s website for deals on rental cars.

Take the easy 20-minute drive to Marriot Courtyard or The Renaissance Downtown Seattle, a trendy and modern hotel right in the heart of downtown making it a great home base for your stay.

It is conveniently located to all the main attractions you’re going to want to explore like Pike’s Place Market and the waterfront as well as offering walkable access to many restaurants and bars in the area. Extra perk, if you decide to bring your canine friend, the hotel is pet-friendly!

After checking in, unpacking and freshening up, it’s time to find some food! Yum! Luckily there are lots of great places to eat in and around downtown. Put your walking shoes on and stop and have lunch on your way to Pike Place. Some recommendations of places to eat along the way:

Lecosho: a casual elegant atmosphere with beautiful high ceilings and an open kitchen, this European-influenced restaurant offers your iconic European food with a Northwest spin. Known for their use of fresh and local ingredients, they take classics and make them fresh and new. Very delicious and a beautiful atmosphere!

Purple Café & Wine Bar: If you like wine, then this is your spot. Clearly they have an impressive wine list but have a wonderful lunch menu as well with things like a to-die-for baked brie appetizer with apricots, caramelized onions and candied walnuts. Or maybe get a cheese and cured meat board from an assortment of local cheese and meats. If you’re looking for something more substantial they have yummy sandwiches, soups and salads too.

Keep on walking to the iconic Pike Place. Pike Place Market is a public market at the Elliott Bay waterfront and is one of the most popular attractions in Seattle. The market was originally opened in 1907 and now is teeming with vendors, artisans and merchants. You will definitely want to spend a good chunk of time exploring all the different stalls looking for souvenirs, handmade craft items, smelling all the fresh flowers, and experiencing (and tasting) all the food offerings. Oh and don’t forget to catch a glimpse of the ‘flying fish’, it’s quite impressive.

After exploring Pike Place, head the short distance behind and check out the iconic Gum Wall at 1428 Post Alley Seattle, WA 98101. Don’t forget to bring your own chewing gum to add to the collection.

Next head back to the Renaissance and hang out, decompress and chill (because it’s always great to build in a little downtime on your trips). Maybe you take a nap, or go downstairs to the bar for happy hour! When you’re ready to head out and explore a spot for dinner, here are a few good options:
- Shuckers Oyster Bar. One of Seattle’s oldest and best oysters bars with a selection of daily caught fresh fish and seafood. Quite delicious and a nice atmosphere!
- The Crab Pot Seattle. If you’re looking for good seafood but in a relaxed setting, this is your spot. The Crab Pot is a relaxed restaurant and bar known for serving fabulous seafood on paper-covered tables with bibs and mallets. Who said you can’t play with your food?!

Day 2 In Seattle

Get an early start in the morning and beat the crowds and get a pretty epic view of downtown Seattle by taking a short drive to Kerry Park. You can use the location of 211 W. Highland Drive Seattle, WA 98119 as your destination point. Parking is scarce so try to get there early to catch a beautiful view before the crowds.

After you get your beautiful shots of downtown Seattle, you’ll be hungry so head out to a few of these options for breakfast:

Biscuit and Bean. A casual breakfast and brunch spot with great biscuit sandwiches.
The Crumpet Shop. This is a small quaint little breakfast and pastry shop perfect for a coffee and a pastry or breakfast sandwich.

You can’t go to Seattle without going to the Space Needle, so head that direction to get your tickets. It can be a bit pricey to do just the deck, but if you bundle it with the other exhibits like Chihuly and the Pop Museum, you’ll save some many.

Definitely recommend the Chihuly Gardens. Going up to the top deck is absolutely worth it though! If it’s a clear day, the views are breathtaking and you can even see the mountains in the distance and the expansiveness of the Puget Sound.

Right next door to the Space Needle is the Chihuly Gardens and Glass. Chihuly is a world-renown glassblowing artist who creates the most incredible works of blown glass. You can walk through the entire eight exhibits which are both indoors and outdoors and make sure you look upwards for some epic views of the space needle.

After your morning out and about, stop for lunch at one of these places:

RN74. Upscale French food that is presently beautifully and absolutely exquisite flavors.
Pasta Casalinga. Wonderful Italian flavors await you at this quaint little Italian restaurant.

One of the best ways to get around town if you don’t want to bring your rental car into town (which I don’t recommend) and are sick of walking, is biking! There are many app-based bike rentals throughout the city and make it affordable and easy to get around.

Seattle is very pedestrian friendly so download an app, find a bike and head out around town. One of the fun things you can do is find “the troll” under the bridge! Located at N 36^th Street Seattle, WA 98103, this gigantic troll has become a spectacle in the Fremont neighborhood.

After biking and using up some of your energy, why not stop by the Starbucks Coffee Reserve and take a tour of the roastery and learn about the history and science behind coffee making! Grab a flight and sip and enjoy your day.

For dinner, check out one of this great spot in town:

The Pink Door. They have a fabulous wine selection and fresh seafood.

Day 3 In Seattle

One of the coolest parts of Seattle is how close it is to some of the most beautiful natural areas and how much there is to do outside. You get the perfect blend of city and nature! There are dozens of optional day trips and hikes you can take out of Seattle but there are a few favorites.

First, you could head to the iconic Mount Rainier National Park. Plan about 2-2 ½ hours’ drive round trip to make it out here, and will be an entirely full day away from Seattle. This 14,000 ft. active volcano is a bucket list item for many people!

There are tons of hikes and activities available offering a little something for whatever you want. Make sure you pack accordingly as the weather can be different at the mountain, and pack enough provisions like water and snacks.

However just as enjoyable and not quite as far, you could also head to Snoqualmie Falls and Lake Washington which is only about 30-45 minute drive. If you ever saw the TV Show “Twin Peaks”, that is where the iconic 268-foot falls are located. You can park for free in the parking lot or the viewing area of the waterfalls.

There are a few walking/hiking paths available for you to explore too. On your way back from the falls, the 520 Bridge that crosses Lake Washington which is located right by the Boeing plant. There is a trail around Lake Washington that takes you around the lake which is beautiful and peaceful.

Day 4 In Seattle

As the fourth day brings your trip to an end, don’t fret – you can still get in a few things with your time remaining! When you check out of the Renaissance Hotel you can ask them to check your luggage in the storage room so you can explore the rest of the day. Or if you opted for the rental car, just throw the luggage in the car and leave it at valet until you get back.

Stop and grab a quick breakfast on your way out to explore a little in the morning at one of these places:

Biscuit Bitch. I’ll just let the name speak for itself…but their biscuit’s are banging!
Sweet Iron Waffles. Delicious daily waffles in all sorts of fun flavors.

For a final epic view of Seattle and Elliot Bay, go down to Pier 57 and hop on the Ferris Wheel. You can take a ride in this 175 foot tall structure and it will give you some beautiful views of the city, the bay and the mountains in the distance. You can purchase tickets online or at the gate when you arrive.

Next, walk the short distance to Pier 59 and go to the Seattle Aquarium and get your fill on all the cute creatures like the playful sea otters, the adorable waddling puffins, and the spunky seals! Tickets can be purchased online for a discount or at the door at any time.

After your morning of exploring, fuel up for your journey home.

FareStreet Restaurant. Their use of fresh and locally sourced food is great!

As your little journey comes to an end, head back to the Renaissance to pick up your bags and rental car and take the short 20 minute drive to the Seattle-Tacoma airport.

Seattle has so much to do, and this just scratches the surface of all the wonderful things to experience, taste, see and do. So you may say goodbye to Seattle, but it definitely won’t be the last time you meet after your fun 4-Day Seattle Weekend.

Getting Around In Seattle

Having stayed downtown I didn’t have to work to hard getting around Seattle as many places are walking distance and coming from London. I am used to exploring on foot and I did just that in Seattle. I did also manage to use the bus a few times with no issues. In addition to the short monorail line and bike.

When it comes to exploring for a short stay in Seattle you definitely do not need a car. The state of Washington is known to have the largest ferry system in the US and second-largest in the world so if you need to explore further afield, Seattle’s downtown Pier 52 terminal has daily scheduled departures fro Bainbridge Island and Bremerton.

For Vashon Island and Kitsap Penisula, you need to head to Fauntonlery terminal in West Seattle. Ferries also run from Edmonton to Kingston and many other places. Check out www.wdot.wa.gov/ferries for more info.

For getting around rail and bus in Seattle, you have plenty of options. If you are unsure just ask around and people were willing to help. Tickets ranged from $2.25 to $3.25. You also have options for taxies and Uber as well as rideshare options.

Best Time To Visit Seattle

Coming from London, I was told that the Seattle weather is very much like London and rains a lot! With that in mind, I prepare for a wet visit.

I found out that rain is not nearly as prevalent as Seattle’s famous reputation would imply. Luckily it rained once during my visit and only lightly too. In that sense, I was certainly lucky.

Winter and spring can be wet in Seattle but once summer kicks in, the weather is similar to that of a Mediterranean climate. The average rainfall is less than 7 inches between May and September. With Seattle temperatures around never going beyond 32 degrees, you can bet on nice summer weather. Ideally, I would say the best time to visit Seattle would be between May and September.

Where To Stay In Seattle

For a major city like Seattle, you can expect there to be a wide range of places to stay in Seattle. I stayed at Marriott Courtyard in Downtown Seattle. This place was perfect as I could walk to most places I had on my list of places to visit in Seattle.

There are several Marriott Hotels in Seattle but this one is located in a buzzy shopping & dining hub with Pike Place Market, Seattle Art Museum & Central Waterfront sights all in walking distance which was perfect for me. Below are a few more options for hotels in Seattle while working through the Seattle itinerary.

Budget:

City Hostel Seattle – with just over 50 rooms, this little budget places to stay in Seattle also comes with views of Space Needle and is a short walk to Pike Place Market.

If you’re a football fan, then you may know about South Bend Indiana: home of Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish. But football isn’t the only cool thing about this town. There are several things to do in South Bend to entice the art, historical, epicurean and adventure enthusiasts.

Here is a guide to a few things to check out on your visit to South Bend Indiana. My time in South Bend was short but managed to explore while visiting my brother and sister currently living in the US.

What To Do In South Bend Indiana

My exploration of South Bend was very much a family trip while exploring with my sisters, my niece and my brother playing tour guide. Below are top things to do in South Bend, many of which are not to be missed when visiting this part of the USA.

University of Notre Dame

Well when in Rome…. But seriously, even if you’re not a Notre Dame enthusiast, this is an incredible destination and you really have to appreciate it when you’re in South Bend. This is the icon of the Midwest.

Notre Dame is a private Catholic research university home to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team and was founded in 1842. Steeped in history, the architecture reflects the beauty and grace of the era.

You can walk around the campus and admire the architecture but you must stop at the Ecks Visitors Center to arrange a tour of the Golden Dome, Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes.

You will learn about the history of the area, the church, and the university itself. Hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to these incredible grounds every year, so you definitely don’t want to miss out on this opportunity.

White Water Rafting at East Race Waterway

Did you know for less than $10 you can have a white water wild adventure right in South Bend Indiana? Yup! The White Water Rafting center at East Race Waterway provides you with an urban thrill unlike any other in the heart of downtown South Bend. Cascade down Class 2 rapids and descend 1,900 feet in a fun afternoon ride.

A one ride pass is $6 and multiple ride tickets range from $10-$15. Tickets should be purchased online to reserve your time slot. Seasonally the tours run from June through August and they’re open primarily on the weekends.

The required height for rafting is 54” and rubber soled shoes with a strap are required. Learn more about the requirements on their website and enjoy the ride!

The South Bend Chocolate Café

This sweet confectioner has many locations around the Midwest, but their hometown factory is located right in South Bend! You can take a free 20-minute tour of the factory and see the chocolate-making equipment and get all the free smells. This is a hit with those travelling with kids.

Next walk through the Chocolate Museum which hosts one of the largest collection of chocolate memorabilia. Then afterwards, head into the shop into the sea of chocolates, caramels, truffles and toffees.

One of the iconic chocolates to try is the Rocknes, named after the famous Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne, this delicious treat is a truffle with cherry flavoring, coconuts and almonds. Yum! Factory tours begin every hour, Monday – Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday’s 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tour the Oliver Mansion

The Oliver Mansion is an exquisite 38-room family home once owned by the J.D. Oliver family. An industrialist, J.D. Oliver, his wife, and their four children moved into the mansion which was built in 1895 and designed by New York architect Charles Alonzo Rich.

The Oliver family made their fortune in the chilled plow works business, in fact J.D.’s father is the one who invented the chilled plow.

Now today it is a wonderful museum that you can explore and learn about the history of the Oliver family, the town and the impact the Oliver’s had on the economy. Tickets can be purchased at the estate or you can purchase them online.

Go to the Studebaker Museum

Studebaker Corporate was created in South Bend in 1852. They originally made buggies and wagons and then turned to automobile manufacturing at the turn of the century when transportation and technology were in a boom.

The museum opened up in 2005 details the history of the company and showcases over 120 vehicles on display. It’s definitely impressive and takes you back in time.

Catch a performance at the Morris Performing Arts Center

South Bend is home to the stunning Morris performing Arts Center which puts on many live events such as concerts, comedians, orchestra, singing performances, and national Broadway tours.

Originally built in 1922, it was once called the Palace Theatre. The interior itself is breathtaking and it truly feels like you’ve stepped into a European novel. Check out their website for upcoming events and performances while you’re in town.

Explore Circa Arts Gallery

The Circa Arts Gallery is a great art gallery to stop in to pick up a piece of original artwork by a local artisan. They have a variety of mediums such as paintings, ceramics, jewelry, woodwork and metal pieces to discover. It’s very unique to the area and it’s always great to support the local people when you’re visiting a destination.

South Bend Museum of Art

Get in touch with your artistic side at the South Bend Museum of Art. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and admission is free to members and a suggested donation of $5 for non-members. They provide group tours or you can take a self-guided tour of the gallery at your own pace.

Shop in downtown South Bend

South Bend has lots of great shopping areas for you to explore. Whether you’re looking for a chain shop or want to explore local boutiques, there are plenty of places to shop.

Also along the way you’ll experience local restaurants, coffee shops and cafes to enjoy on your afternoon out and about. Visit South Bend has a great list of all the local retailers and even have a few deals now and then too.

Where To Stay In South Bend

As far as where to stay in South Bend during your visit, there are rental homes, budget, mid-range and a couple of 4-star hotels. The list is not long as there are a little over 100 places to choose from, which I guess makes the decision easier.

Most people take to prefer to book hotels near Notre Dame or near the university so I have highlighted some options for that too. Below are a few options for places to stay but you can see the full list of best places to stay in South Bend here.

Budget:

Motel 6 – Set about a 5km of Notre Dame Stadium and 3.5km from the University of Notre Dame.
Quality Inn & Suites – Located 4 miles from the Univerity and less than a mile from South Bend Regional Airport.

Mid-Range:

Morris Inn At Notre Dame – Located on the University of Notre Dame Campus and only a 5-minute walk from the football at Notre Dame Stadium.
Best Western Plus – Located 4 miles from the University of Notre Dame and comes with an indoor pool.

Luxury:

Embassy Suites By Hilton – Located only 1.2km from Notre Dame Stadium. There is private parking, onsite restaurant, bar and lounge.
Hyatt Place – Located about a 10-minute drive from the University of Notre Dame. Complete with an indoor pool and 24 hour fitness centre.

Getting Around South Bend & Getting To South Bend

We mostly drove when exploring South Bend and parked when we need to head into attractions. There is some public transport, which I never got to experience. Fares are available in day passes fro $3 a day, 14 day pass at $18 and monthly pass at $35 dollars.

If you are a student the pass is $30. The basic fare for a single ticket/ journey is $1. For more information on public transport check out Transpo.

How To Get To South Bend

As far as how to get to South Bend, my young sister and I drove from Colombus Ohio to Michigan when my brother lives. I had flow from London to Columbus and then most of the journeys were by car before flying from Chicago to Seattle for my last leg of exploring in the US.

The nearest airport is South Bend International Airport (was South Bend Regional) with major airlines flying in and out. From Delta, American and KLM and United Airlines.

Best Time To Visit South Bend

South Bend weather can be a bit harsh in the winter so don’t really recommend fun visits between November, December, January and February as during these months you are likely to see snow of at least on average, 40 centimeters of snow.

December alone can see at least 169 cm of snowfall. For the best times to visit South Bend, I would recommend visiting between April and October when the weather is much more pleasant for exploring and enjoying the city and nearby attractions in Indiana.

There is definitely more to do in South Bend besides football, so don’t be afraid that you won’t have anything to do. Pack up your bags, hit the road (or skies) and check out what South Bend has to offer you and your family. Whether looking to spend a weekend in South Bend or longer.

New Orleans has its own special vibe, it is an eclectic mixture of French, Spanish, African, and American Southern, each showing their own influence on the city.

Once you visit New Orleans and start to peel away its layers, you will find yourself immersed in incredible food, an awesome music scene, fascinating history, and a lively culture that loves to celebrate life. There is so much to see and do in New Orleans, you will only get bored if you want to! Be sure to check the weather when planning your trip so that you have everything covered when it comes to the perfect packing list of New Orleans. If you are going to be doing a lot of walking all day exploring make sure you pack the right shoes for travel.

Take a Cemetery Tour

Cemetery tours in New Orleans are a major tourist attraction (I told you this city was unique). In New Orleans, the deceased are buried above ground due to the fact that the entire town is built on a swamp. The cemeteries are full of elaborate mausoleums, gorgeous statues, and incredible stone crypts.

One of the most famous cemeteries, St. Louis Cemetery #1, located right outside of the French Quarter, is the burial place to the famous “voodoo queen”, Marie Laveau. Believers and non-believers flock to the St. Louis #1 to view her resting place and pay their respects. You are only allowed entrance to the St. Louis #1 with a guide, so be sure and sign up for a tour.

Admire the Architecture of The French Quarter

Historical architecture is abound in New Orleans, and the city fully embraces it. Roaming around the French Quarter is a relaxed way to see the many architectural styles of this great city. I was amazed to learn that there are 20 historic districts on the National Registry that are located right in New Orleans.

While walking the streets of the French Quarter, notice the French-inspired balconies, the hidden courtyards, and the brightly colored houses.

Listen to Live Music In NOLA’s Music Scene

There is no shortage of music here in the Crescent City. Head to Frenchmen Street at night, and you will hear music seeping out of every doorway just beckoning you to come inside. There are clubs blasting everything from reggae to heavy metal.

Whatever your preference, you will find it in New Orleans, but pay special attention to the jazz scene. Plan to spend an evening in the historic Preservation Hall to have a true New Orleans jazz experience. New Orleans is among many amazing places to visit in the US and the music alone draw visitors from around the world as well as the US.

Don’t overlook the street performers in New Orleans either. You will find them everywhere, especially around Jackson Square. Some of my most memorable experiences in New Orleans have been centered around the street performers.

Eat | Where To Get The Best Food In New Orleans

Really, eat! New Orleans is a mecca for great food, with plenty of the most popular food in America you need to try. There are several world-famous chefs that call New Orleans home, but don’t just focus on the famous names, find the little “mom and pop” shops that are popular. Make it a point to talk to the locals and go where they go. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

It really doesn’t get any better than starting your day with beignets and a cafe au lait from Cafe du Monde. Then grab a po’boy from Central Grocery for lunch. After walking around the city for awhile, and earning some calories, treat yourself to some true cajun food for dinner.

Drinks and Best Bars In New Orleans

New Orleans is known for a party atmosphere, the city is notorious for celebrating, so it only makes sense that drinks are associated with this environment. You have to go to Pat O’Brien’s and have an original Hurricane, a drink that originated right here in New Orleans.

Another local favorite, the Sazerac, not only originated in New Orleans but was America’s first cocktail! Of course, you should have it at the world-famous Sazerac bar. While we are on New Orleans’ originals, let finish out with one last drink, the Ramos Gin Fizz.

Shopping In New Orleans

Shopaholics will not be disappointed in New Orleans. Start by visiting the French Market, which is located riverside in the lower French Quarter. The market stretches for several city blocks, but my favorite area is the outdoor flea market. Here you will find vendors selling everything from sunglass to unique New Orleans souvenirs.

After visiting the French Market, walk down to Royal Street, also located in the French Quarter. I love shopping on Royal Street because I always seem to find a diamond in the rough. Just being on Royal Street itself is a unique experience. Notice the beautiful wrought iron balconies that overhang the street, and the street performers that are entertaining the crowds on the corners. The street is lined with antique shops, art galleries, thrift stores, cafes, and courtyards.

Magazine Street, in the Garden District, is another great shopping area. Antique stores, boutique clothing shops, design studios, and great restaurants line Magazine Street, just inviting you to come in.

Visit a Plantation

Once the mainstay of the southern economy, plantations were abound in and around New Orleans. Today, many have become popular tourist destinations.

There are several plantations within driving distance of New Orleans. One of the most popular, Oak Alley Plantation, contains a beautiful antebellum-style home sitting on 25 acres which can be toured daily.

Houma’s House is another tourist favorite with its restored mansion and gardens showcasing life in the 1800s. You can easily book tours right out of the city that includes transportation and entrance to the plantations. A definite must for history lovers.

Tour the Garden District

A short street car ride from the French Quarter will land you in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Louisiana, the Garden District. Suddenly surrounded by Greek Revival homes, take time to just roam around the neighborhood admiring the palaces of the south. There are several self-guided tours online, or you can hire a guide to explain the history and beauty of the area. Don’t worry, you’re in good company in the Garden District. Celebrities such as Sandra Bullock, Beyonce, and the Mannings all own houses in this area.

As you can see, New Orleans a city full of life and culture. Take the time to truly get a pulse for the life that’s around you, and I bet you will fall in love with New Orleans just like we have! Even with 36 hours in New Orleans you can still experience the essence of the city.

Getting Around New Orleans

New Orleans is a relatively easy city to get around in. The tourist areas are walkable and are connected to the other neighborhoods by an easy to navigate trolley and bus system. There are also taxis in New Orleans, but they are pricey. I would recommend using Uber or Lyft in lieu of a taxi.

Airport Transport | New Orleans Airport shuttles and Taxis

There are several ways to get from the airport to hotels. From Share-a-ride, to chauffered rides and airport shuttles. If booking airport Shuttles make sure you read the reviews on Trip Advisor as some have less than satisfactory reviews.

You can also opt to use taxis or Uber which are super quickt and reliable. Also, use the shuttles if you are in a large group but bear in mind that most won’t leave until the bus or shuttle is full. If you can’t stand to wait then arrange a private car or book a large car when ordering Uber.

During my visit, I wasted away the afternoon having a scrub, a shea butter treatment, and an 80-minute holistic massage. Be sure to bring your swimsuit because spa guests get a day pass to the resort’s fabulous pools as well.

If you’re looking for a night out on the town in Scottsdale, the Scottsdale Quarter is the place to be. With an array of shops, bars, and restaurants, this bustling outdoor promenade is a great place to grab a drink after a day in the dessert or an afternoon at the spa. My favorite restaurant, Eddie V’s, has delicious cocktails and delectable seafood. Try the yellowtail sashimi and the shrimp and lobster bisque if you’re a seafood lover like I am.

I never want my love for traveling abroad to cause me to overlook the beauty right here in America. Arizona is a beautiful state. If leisure is what you’re after, Scottsdale is a great city to visit.
