Authentic Russian lacquer art features sophisticated hand-drawn miniature painting on a paper-mache box. The history of Russian lacquer miniatures started in 1795 when the rich merchant Ivan Korobov created the production of lacquer visors for military caps. The lacquer surface was considered extremely elegant and beautiful.

Russian chocolate

Rich in taste, with the strong fragrance of natural cocoa and milk, it has been highly appreciated for generations – from the Russian Empire to our days (the oldest existing chocolate factory was founded in 1867). The best Russian chocolate is firm and slightly bitter. The most loved local labels include “Alyonka”, “Vdohnovenie” (Inspiration), “Lux”, “Visit” “Skazki Pushkina” (Pushkin’s Fairy-tales) and “Korkunov”.

 

Medovukha or Vodka

It is common to think that all Russians drink a lot of vodka. Well, it is a bit of a stereotype. Medovukha was a Russian #1 drink long before Vodka. Russian drinking culture originates from Mead consuming rituals of Varyags – Viking founders of Ancient Russia. It’s similar to wine (not strong spirits) and has unique honey flavor.

When it comes to vodka, know that not all vodkas are equally good in Russia. It is wise to take your time and ask a shop assistant for help to choose a high-quality vodka bottle, which you will probably be able to buy for quite cheap. Good middle-segment vodkas include: Zelyonaya Marka, Belenkaya, Stolichnaya, Smirnoff, Evreyskiy Standard (kosher vodka made of matzo). Premium class segment vodkas are Beluga, Stolichnaya Gold.

 

For a non-alcoholic Russian drink, look for Kvass

It is an ancient Russian non-alcoholic drink made from bread by means of fermentation from natural ingredients and little sugar. Traditional Russian Kvass has a deep brown color and resembles stout beer by taste.  It is very popular among the locals, so you should be able to find it easily in any supermarket or food store. Kvass is largely known in Russia as a very wholesome drink, rich in vitamins and helping people prevent or resist various health problems. What better gift could there be?

Ushanka

A Russian fur cap with ear flaps that can be tied up to the crown of the cap, or fastened at the chin to protect the ears, jaw, and lower chin from the cold. An alternative is to bend the flaps back and tie them behind the head, which is called “ski-style”. Though ushankas are a distinctly Russian hat, indeed, the stereotypical Russian is seen to wear one, the wearing of fur caps of similar design is common throughout China, North Korea, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. It is also worn widely in North America and Canada. Many locals wear it during the cold season, as it never fails to protect from cold.

 

 

Valenki (felted boots)

Honestly, the best option when it comes to keeping your feet warm. These boots won’t fail to do so, being specially made of felted wool to be worn in thirty to forty degrees below zero. The first felted boots in history were supposed to be worn by the nomads of the Great Steppe more than a thousand years ago and they still make part of the winter uniform of the Russian army.

Typical Russian clothing and handicraft, reflecting Russian culture. The tradition of making pennywhistles in the form of a horse, a horserider or a bird is tied to the ancient magic rituals and old agricultural calendar holidays, such as the ritual spring holiday of Svistoplyaska (i.e. whistle-dance) celebrating the Sun.

Matrioshka dolls

Matryoshka, also known as the Russian nesting doll, is one of the most instantly recognizable symbols of Russia and more importantly, as a symbol of the feminine side of Russian culture. Matryoshka in Russia is associated with family and fertility. The biggest doll is called “mother”, the smallest one is called seed. Sellers of all kinds set up their tents in the city’s hotspots, such as in front of the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood and the General Staff Building. Prices may be a bit higher when there are a lot of tourists, but haggling is widely accepted, so don’t be shy and you may just get the best bargain in town!

Be extra aware of your surroundings though and look after your belongings, as pickpockets love targeting such places.

 

Eliseyev Emporium

Not to be confused with a supermarket, the Eliseyev Emporium has a fine collection of the best Russian produce. Your eyes will water at the beautifully decorated interior inside with its plethora of choices: chocolate, vodkas, cheeses and desserts.

 

Gostiny Dvor

It is basically an array of little shops all organised together in long galleries in a really old building, which once was the main shopping center for the city. 

 

Matreshka Tanushka shop

This is a stall inside the market that has the best display of dolls in the city. The owner is very knowledgeable and friendly. You can learn about the history of matryoshkas in English and even read some fairytales.

Whether you are doing a day in Lisbon or explore for 3 days or longer, you simply cannot miss on the retail therapy in the Portuguese capital. Below are some of the cool places to check out when shopping in Lisbon.

 

Luxury Shopping Experience

Lisbon is a beautiful capital with stately charm, and although Portugal is famously an affordable destination, you can take advantage of luxury shopping to rival Paris or Milan. You will be able to find all the high-end designer stores you could possibly wish for in Chiado, along the Avenida da Liberdade. This beautiful tree-lined boulevard in the centre of Lisbon boasts, MaxMara, Chanel, and Dolce and Gabbana stores among other designers.

A fantastic place to visit if you’re looking for the luxe experience is Fashion Clinic, it carries a huge range of products from accessories to perfume and jewellery for both sexes and is a genuinely stylish shopping experience. The shop changes its stock each season so that it has the latest designs.

Just off the Avenida da Liberdade sits Stivali Lisbon, which is both a clothing and shoe boutique which offers designer fashion labels from around the world. Stivali is the very epitome of high-end fashion in Lisbon, and it is a well-established shop which even puts on its own fashion shows.

Portuguese Boutiques

Hunt out gorgeous independent boutiques and traditional Portuguese crafts and products in the Bairro Alto. Wandering the maze of streets to find authentic trinkets and treats is fun to do late into the evening.

Start at A Vida Portuguesa (Rua Anchieta 11). Filled to the rafters with locally made oils and soaps in the prettiest retro packaging. The shop is run by a Portuguese journalist named Catarina Portas, who curates the most beautiful collection of Portuguese products. Shop for hand-decorated ceramic sardines, melamine picnic crockery, and sturdy coloured glasses.

Lisbon has a working history and as such, is quartered into sections devoted to individual crafts and professions. Once upon a time, you would have come upon groups of shops selling similar products, such as the gilders, shoemakers, and lacemakers. Although that isn’t the case today, many of the street names still reflect the tradition.

Pop into Retrosaria Bijou if you would like a taste of old fashioned Lisbon, this old fashioned haberdashery on Rua da Conceicao is a tiny trove of treasures. You will have your purchases rung up on an old fashioned silver till by a very experienced assistant who seems to have been there as long as the shop.

While you’re on Rua da Conceicao you must go into Perfumaria Alceste, it is from the same era as the haberdashers and evokes a pleasant nostalgia. The glass bottles of homemade perfumes are watched over by the very strict shop keeper, so don’t even try and touch or take any pictures.

 

Gourmet Food

In the same area, on the Rua dos Fanqueiros, you can enjoy strolling around all the little shops tucked away in the winding streets. You’ll find wine shops with a range of delicious ports from houses in the north, local cheeses, and other specialties.

Wake up and smell the coffee in Rua Garrett, where you’ll find Casa Pereira where you can follow your nose to a shop filled with coffee beans. You can buy ground beans and whole beans, including a small exclusive batch from Sao Tome. You can also cram your bag full of Portuguese tea, cakes, and chocolates from this shop, which has been in Lisbon since 1930.

To continue your gastronomic education, head over to the Antiga Casa do Bacalhau to admire the hanging salt cod. If you decide to buy some, then you’ll definitely have to drop into A Viuva, an old-fashioned hardware shop where you can buy a traditional cataplana, the hinged dish used to stew fish and seafood.

Cais do Chiado should be a stop on your food shopping trip, and it is a lovely organic grocery shop and cafe which not only sells snacks but beautiful trinkets to take home. This is the best place to buy a traditional metal lunch tin called a marmita, and buy a few decorated tins of Portuguese sardines by the Tricana brand.

Portugal loves its shopping malls, and Lisbon is no exception. There are many malls in the city and around the outskirts, but many of them simply offer the same chain shops that you’ll find anywhere. The best mall of all is the Embaixada, in a stunning neo-Moorish palace in the Príncipe Real area of town. A mall in a palace is a fun place to shop simply because of how unusual it is, but this mall also has a wide selection of shops for you to spend your euros. All of the stores in Embaixada showcase Portuguese design, culture, and food, and the restaurant in the centre holds Fado concerts on Tuesday and Sunday for you to enjoy after a busy day shopping.

If you are staying in the centre of the city it is easy you can wander over to the Armazéns do Chiado. Constructed after a fire destroyed this area of Chiado and it’s beautiful old 18th-century buildings in 1988, the three-story mall has everything you need. From Spanish fashion brand Zara to Portuguese electronic store FNAC you can enjoy a visit after visiting the cultural attractions of Lisbon.

Some of the huge shopping centres in Lisbon are Amoreiras, the Vasco da Gama Centre, and Colombo Shopping, and all have an enormous selection of shops and a food court.

Discount Outlet

Freeport Lisboa Fashion Outlet is over the Vasco da Gama bridge in Alcochete, about 30 minutes from Lisbon. It is the biggest outlet mall in Europe with international fashion brands, perfume, restaurants, and home decor. The shops usually offer around 70% off RRP, and tourists can pick up a VIP shopping card, which gives a further 10% off. The outdoor shopping centre is open from 10 am to 10 pm, and if you don’t have a car, you can get on the Freeport bus from Marques de Pombal Square in central Lisbon.

Lisbon is full of fabulous markets; whether you fancy browsing for books, clothes, or simply enjoying the fresh produce on offer in the covered markets, you’re sure to find something that catches your eye.

Markets are a huge part of life in Lisbon, and many people prefer to get their food at the market twice a week rather than go to the supermarket as the produce is so fresh and locally grown. You will bump into all types of people at a Lisbon market, from home cooks looking for a bargain to chefs checking out the catch of the day. In the clothes and antiques markets, you’ll see plenty of locals too, the Portuguese love a bargain and will happily spend a few hours rubbing shoulders with eager tourists to find the perfect vintage dress or costume jewellery piece.

Some of the regular markets have been going for decades and have spread out over that time, so whether they’re in a historic covered marketplace, or sprawl out al fresco, its best to give yourself a few hours to explore. Don’t forget the food when your hunting for treasures, either. You’re never far from a neighbourhood cafe or food truck, so don’t forget to try a Portuguese salgado snack. Must-Visit Markets In Lisbon

Whether you are visiting Lisbon for the day or 3 days in the capital, there is always room to squeeze in a market or two. Below are some of my favourite markets in Lisbon. You may also be able to pick up sought after Lisbon souvenirs at the market too.

 

Market Snacks

Salgados are savory finger food snacks that are enjoyed from late morning onwards but are at their most delicious when fresh out of the over at around 11 am; locals often enjoy a Salgado and a Lambretta (a tiny 150ml glass of ice-cold beer) standing at a cafe counter. Salgados are usually fried and should be eaten warm, avoid anything that looks as if it has been in a display case feeling sad all morning, and find somewhere that cooks fresh batches often.

The pastel de bacalhau is, without a doubt, the most popular and is a delicious little morsel made from flaked salt cod, potatoes, eggs, and parsley crenelled and deep-fried. Rissois de camarão, the breaded half-moon pastries filled with shrimp and bechamel sauce, are also very popular, along with puff pastries called chamuças or croquetas filled with any combination of cheese, ham, or spinach. Empanadas are also worth trying; these snacks are small pies rather than being a fried delicacy and are usually filled with chicken, duck, or pork.

Feira do Relógio(Market of Clock)

This is away from the main tourist trail, but it’s definitely worth the trip. You can pick up so many bargains here that your main problem is going to be how to get it all home again! Hop on the metro to Bela Vista and make the short walk out to the Olivais neighbourhood for the Sunday street market. You can buy almost anything you can imagine here, from furniture and electricals to clothes and cut flowers. Bring your reusable bags, but don’t get carried away if you only travelled to Lisbon with hand luggage.

 

Feira da Ladra

This huge flea market is a Lisbon institution, and you cannot miss it if you are at all interested in handicrafts and vintage clothes and records. The name translates as ‘Thieves Market,’ but don’t worry – it’s not plagued with vice and crime. The name comes from the fact that in the past, the Alfama area was known as a shady area full of crooks and ner do wells. It’s not like that these days, thankfully, it’s a popular and safe tourist area.

Since the thirteenth century, the Feira da Ladra has been the place to go if you’re looking for a bargain, you may have to rummage, and be prepared to haggle as prices often get bumped up for tourists.

LX Factory Sunday Market

This old industrial complex dating from 1846 was reborn in 2008 as a cool art and cafe space. The factory-style architecture was maintained as a complex of exhibition spaces initially, and shops, restaurants, and cafes were later added.

The market hosted every Sunday at the LX Factory caters to the more discerning shopper, you’re not going to pick up any super cheap bargains, but you can enjoy checking out the organic fare and enjoying the setting.

While you’re there check out bookshop Ler Devagar in a former print shop, one of the highlights of the LX Factory complex, it maintains the old printing press on display, and the bicycle artwork by Pietro Proserpina hanging over patrons heads is a fun touch. The LX Cheesecake Factory is an institution, and Time Out has named the chocolate cake, which is the specialty of cafe Landau, as the best in the city.

 

Mercado de Campo de Ourique

This market is for food only, and it’s worth popping by if you’re self-catering in Lisbon. The indoor market hall has been home to a market since 1930 and was revamped in 2013 to add an exhibition area and room for restaurants and cafes. You can pick up local cheese, cured meats, and bread to take away, or you can chill at the communal dining tables while you enjoy lunch from one of the restaurants.

If you’re planning to visit Fernando Pessoa’s house, then the market is a great place to drop into lunch. Campo de Ourique is also the best place to start a Tram 28 ride as it tends to be quieter before you descend to the river and the popular Martim Moniz stop.

 

 

 

Feira de Alfarrabistas

If you are a book lover, then you cannot miss the book fair every Saturday in Chiado. It is busy, it is in the heart of downtown but don’t let that put you off. If you’re in the market for a genuine first edition, or you’re a comic book fan looking for something unusual, then you’re sure to find it here.

 

Mercado da Ribeira

The Mercado da Ribeira is the ‘real’ name of what most people know as the Time Out Market. In 2014 part of this 19th-century marketplace was made-over into what now houses upmarket food stalls handpicked by the restaurant specialists at Time Out Magazine, Lisbon.

You may not have stumbled across the other side of the market, though, and if you don’t venture away from the food stalls, you’ll be missing a treat. Until 2 pm daily, a food market operates, selling meat, fish, fruit, and vegetables at much better prices than supermarkets. It’s worth going just to see the fish stalls, the Portuguese are huge fish and seafood lovers, and there is a myriad of beautiful whole fish laid out for people to examine before they buy.

Lisbon’s Gloria funicular classified as a national monument opened 1885 located on the west side of the Avenida da Liberdade connects downtown with Bairro Alto.

 

Mercado Jardim da Estrela

This isn’t a cheap market, but it is in a beautiful setting. The Jardim da Estrela park is a lovely place for an evening stroll, and you can check out this small market while you’re there. It is on once a month, and in the summer, you can enjoy live jazz as you browse the locally made clothes and crafts.
