The Perfect Melbourne Itinerary For 5 Days - Things To Do In Melbourne #australia #oz #traveltips #itinerary #adventure #greatoceanroad

If you have not been to Australia yet I hope my Melbourne itinerary for 5 days inspires you to start planning your trip.

If you have already been, and like me are already planning another trip to explore more of Australia I hope this puts a little more heat into those plans to get you out exploring Melbourne CBD and surrounding areas.

The city itself is beautiful with so much to do but also offers a great opportunity to take so many day tours and day trips from Melbourne to explore Great Ocean Road, Philip Island, Yarra Wine Valley and more.

You also have great access to jump off to nearby places like Barrier Reef and New Zealand via a quick flight.

So how many days in Melbourne does one need? I would suggest a the very least 3 days but 5 days in Melbourne allows you to pace yourself and explore not only Melbourne but do day trips without feeling like you are cramming in too much in a short timeba.

To supplement this Australia itinerary of 5 days in Melbourne, I will also be shortly sharing a 7 day Melbourne itinerary with additional options for those with more time in Melbourne.

Perfect Melbourne Itinerary For 5 Days

Let’s face it, Australia is pretty far and even when you are prepared you may experience a little jet lag. With that in mind, this Melbourne itinerary 5 days blog post takes that into account and makes the first day easy and laid back as you explore Melbourne city sights and also plan where you need to be for the day tours you will be taking from Melbourne.

If you are really short on time and a Melbourne itinerary of 2 days or Melbourne 3 days itinerary this blog post allows you to trim a few areas.

So you can opt to do one day in Melbourne and one day Great Ocean Road tour which is a must for anyone visiting Melbourne.

If you have more time to do say Melbourne itinerary for 10 days then my next post with 7 days itinerary might be one to check out as with 10 days you can also take proper rest days in between day trips and day tours which really can be tiring as you return late in the evening.

Day 1 – Explore Melbourne CBD

Your first day in Melbourne is all about leisurely exploring. So head to Melbourne CBD and wander around. Check out Federation Square, a place filled with bars, cool buildings and where a lot of events are held.

Events like the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival in March, Melbourne International Comedy Festival in April and Melbourne Festival in October and plenty of performances, pop-up exhibitions and free workshops.

This is also an intersection where you will find Flinders Street and around the corner is Hosier Lane. Melbourne is renowned as one of the world’s street art capitals, and residents are encouraged to participate in creative expression.

Hosier and Rutledge lanes and Centre Place are among the most colourful spots, creating some of the city’s best open-air galleries. You can explore Hosier Lane on your own but I would highly recommend taking a guided street art tour as they walk you through the stories behind the art.

Once you have check out Fed Sq, have a quick look at National Gallery of Victoria then continue walking towards St Kilda Road and head for the Shrine of Remembrancee, this then leads you to Melbournes Botanical Gardens.

This places is chilled out and you can explore at leisure. There is a cafe where you can grab some food and chill in the cafe or on the green surrounding the area.

From the Botanical Gardens, you can head out and walk along the River Yarra and take in the sights leading you back to Fed Square and head to Southbank.

Southbank draws a sophisticated crowd to its cultural venues. Here you will also find the Malthouse theater, based in a restored brewery, and the state-of-the-art Melbourne Recital Centre which hosts classical concerts.

Southbank is also where you will find clubs, food courts and designer shops in the sprawling Crown Casino complex. The lively riverside promenades features al fresco fine dining and cargo sheds housing craft-beer bars. There are plenty of rooftop bars, one which we sampled during the day before checking out the Botanical Gardens.

Day 2 – Great Oceans Road Tour

If you are visiting Melbourne this tour is a must! Exploring the historical Ocean Road, not only taking on beautiful coastal towns but Australia’s amazing beaches is a road trip not to pass up.

While I would recommend doing at least 2 days with only 5 days in Melbourne, I suggest doing a day trip from Melbourne to Great Ocean Road.

A drive to the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne includes a superb coastal view over the sea dashing against some of the majestic reefs and cliffs.

This is the world’s biggest memorial as it pays homage to servicemen lost in World War 1 and 3000 returned soldiers who carved the 243km route from rocky cliffs to this stunning coastal road.

There are several tour options from those that show you the highlights to those that also include dining experiences checking out some of Australia’s famous foods to those that include the rich history of the Aboriginal people who have belonged to these lands for more than 40000 years.

Set your eyes on The 12 Apostles from above as you take in the views a helicopter ride. You can read about my experience doing the helicopter tour of 12 Apostles on GOR on the blog.

The Loch Ard Gorge is also included in many of the tours as well as Otway Rainforest and many more tourist spots.

If you are here for longer you can also add underwater adventures and exploring the corals and snorkeling as well as surfing lessons.

Melbourne Day 2 Itinerary Summary of Things To Do On Great Ocean Road

  • Great Ocean Road Arch
  • Belles Beach
  • Coastal Towns like Torquay
  • History of GOR
  • GOR Lighthouse
  • Limestone stacks of The 12 Apostles
  • Loch Ard Gorge and the tragic shipwreck
  • Razorback remains of London Bridge
  • Stop For Koalas
  • Great Otway National Park

I have also linked above to some of the posts where I cover GOR in more detail. If you do one of the GOR day trip tours make sure you check out where they leave from the day before so that you know where they leave from as they start really early at 6 am mostly.

This saves them having to wait for you and possibly leave you behind. Also means you can bit the traffic and get on the road before major congestion starts in Melbourne.

Also note that there are tours that combine a tour of Great Ocean Road and the Grampians as part of one 2-3 day tour.

The other option is renting a car in Melbourne and instead of trying to do everything just do GOR so that you can really take your time with road trip stops along the road.

My friend rented a car for our road trip around Yarra Valley

Day 3 – Melbourne Brunch & St Kits Beach Or Philip Island Tour

After a day on the road all day the day before and exploring the sights on Great Ocean Road this is a day to take things easy a little bit.

With that in mind, start the day checking out Melbourne’s amazing brunch spots. Melbournians love their coffee and quality here matters as do cool brunches.

If you need inspiration on the best places to check out I have a post on Melbourne Brunches on the blog.

After brunch head over and explore The Royal Exhibition Building, a World Heritage Site-listed building in Melbourne, Australia.

The grand Royal Exhibition Building is the world’s only surviving Great Hall, constructed as an exhibition space and still used for that purpose. Now also serves as a museum and well worth adding to your Melbourne itinerary.

You also have some time to chill if you want to squeeze in anything else in your itinerary before the evening’s suggestions.

Once it gets dark you have a choice of heading to St Kilda’s beach to see the Penguin Parade for free. We went slightly early and had dinner close to the pier and waiting for the sun to set.

When it gets dark the little penguins return to the shores. You are allowed to take pictures but no flash is allowed. This is one of the cheapest ways to see the little guys.

If you have more time and want to really see a bigger colony with a combination of a boat cruise, make sure you check out the Philip Island tour.

Day 4 – Grampians National Park Day Trip Or Puffing Billy Railway

Escape Melbourne for a day of exploring at truly stunning part of Victoria. The Grampians national park is rich in spectacular views and scenery and its fair share of history as well.

Learn about the Aboriginals in the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and learn the stories of the early settlers in the area.

Walk to Boroka lookout and explore the quaint little town of Halls Gap. Visit the Balconies/Jaws of death and Reeds lookout and marvel at the amazing views from this spot.

Trek down the gorgeous track to Mackenzie Falls and view the beautiful waterfall before making your way back to Melbourne.

Day 5 – Markets and last day Shopping (Optional Yarra Valley Tour)

So, day 5 in Melbourne is going to be another chill out day. If you are leaving Melbourne today then one option is an easy day where you pretty much explore as you please.

If can also be a free day where you repeat any of the places you have already visited in Melbourne or visit places you may have missed out on in the city.

If like me your life leaves Melbourne late in the night then you might have a full day to explore. You can either check out the markets in Melbourne or do another day tour.

My friend took me on a road trip exploring Gunnamatta beach as well as Arthur’s Seat which has stunning views of Melbourne from high up in the mountains.

We also checked out Yarra Valley. If you are a lover of wine a day tour to Yarra Valley’s wine region is a must. For a selection of Yarra Valley tours click here.

But, let face it, no trip to Thailand is complete without seeing Bangkok. Let us start the 3 week trip in Thailand with the very happening Bangkok scene in the first week of your 3 week Thailand trip.

Also, make sure you read up on things to know about Thailand before visiting.

Day 1

No 3-week tour of Thailand is complete without checking out Bangkok. The first day of exploring Bangkok, you can start with a visit to the Grand Palace.

The buildings and structures for diverse purposes and of differing styles, reflecting the changing architecture during the various reigns of the kings. Despite this, most of the buildings within adhere strictly to classical Thai architecture.

The Grand Palace is a must-visit spot on any 3 week trip to Thailand. It is located on the Na Phra Lan Road and is quite accessible.

Visitors will be able to view the war memorabilia of Thailand and the ornamental decor and items in use by the royalty. In the same complex, you will be able to come across the gorgeous Wat Phra Kaew Temple or the Emerald Buddha temple.

After this trip, you can go to Dusit Palace. The opulence of this white monument is just un-mistaken. The Dusit Palace was commissioned to be constructed by King Rama V after he returned from Europe.

Hence, the architectural style of this white marble palace spells European artistry everywhere.

The palace is open to the visitors from 9.30 am, and in order to get the tickets, you can consult the Grand Palace ticket office.

After these two grand palace visits, you can hop into one of the popular hangouts in the city center. For sunset, be ready to visit the Chao Phraya River coast and take in the breath-taking charm of the Wat Arun temple.

The temple with all the lights up twinkles in the dusk skyline and reflects magically on the waters of Chao Phraya river. A river cruise ride with dining is one of the must-dos on your visit in the city.

Day 2

The next day, you can begin on a more spiritual note with the visit to the Wat Arun temple early in the morning during sunrise.

Thousands of tourists and devout folk’s throng the Temple of Dawn and watch the marvelous temple at its morning glory

. The gilded spires and the 70-Meter high spire studded with stained glass decor add to the charm and beauty at any time of the day. It is necessary to dress modestly while visiting the temples.

Just on taking a boat from the Thien pier, you can reach another monument that will spell-bind you this trip to Bangkok.

The Wat Pho temple is a majestic temple, which is famous for its 46-meter long Reclining Buddha. The temple is located on the Sanamchai Road, and it is sure to offer you serenity like no other.

Next, on the trip, you can visit the Safari World or Ocean World depending upon your preference. These two places are worth your time and every minute you spend there, will be a great stress-buster.

Bangkok comes alive at the night, and this is not something that you were not aware. Thai massage parlors on one side, the risqué nightclubs all give a new lease of life to those who come to Bangkok for the same.

The Sukhumvit Road, the bars at Siam, Silom, and Thonburi are all going to bring out the party animal in you. There are rooftop bars hosting classic and absolutely stunning parties that you can never get tired of.

The last day can start with a trip to the Dreamland amusement park, or heading of the Old Town for some exploration on foot.

The Old Town has European architecture all around and has stores and markets aplenty to shop from.

If you feel that you have not had your fill of shopping, heading off to the Floating Market, or the bustling Chinatown is a great option.

Day 3: Travel To Chiang Mai

For the next three days, you can spend in Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is a mountainous city located on the north of Thailand, and it will be a great diversity to discover here in terms of terrain.

The city has a great historical and cultural heritage with art and architectural evidence in the form of temples and ruins from the 14th century still existing there.

The first-day trip to Chiang Mai can be a visit in the Doi Suthep area. This is a mountainous area covering dense forests and waterfalls, growing across the ranges of high mountains.

Trekking through these forests with a guide and reaching the top for a stunning view is a great way to relax.

Other than that, a visit to the temple of Doi Suthep to visit the jaw-dropping beautiful architecture of the temple is something that you can think about later.

This trip will take a long time and so if after that, you still have the energy for more exploration or spending time close to nature, a visit to the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary can be on the list.

The ticketing office is located on the Tha Phae Road, and the trip will involve a safari through the jungle where you can spot rescued or orphan elephants in the wild.

There are various other such elephant camps as Patara, Mae Phing, and more to check out.  For tips on traveling to Chiang Mai from Bangkok check out this the post by Backpackers Wanderlust.

Day 4

Next day, you can visit the Old City of Chiang Mai. By now, you know the prevalence of Wats in and around Bangkok and in Chaing Mai, you will not find any difference.

The number of Wats you will come across in the Old City is also high. There are intricately designed temples or Wats like the Wat Phra Singh, which is by far, the most celebrated one.

It then comes the Wat Chedi Luang that is one of the oldest Buddhist temples once even housing the famous Emerald Buddha. Besides that, there is the Wat Sri Suphan with its shimmery coat of silver paint that gleams in the morning sun and in evening lights.

The night bazaar or market at Chiang Mai- Kat Rin Kham market, the Kalare Night Market, and others are great destinations for shopping for the local items. From mouth-watering local delicacies to more, these places will be worth the time.

Day 5, 6 7

The next-day trip across Chiang Mai can be through the local markets and other sights. A Saturday and Sunday Walking Market is a must visit, and if you love adventure trails, then visiting the local parks and going for nature trail experiences can be a great way to enjoy Chaing Mai like no other.

While in Chiang Mai you are also only a 3 hour drive to Chiang Rai. There are plenty of things to do in Chiang Rai, its also said to be much more relaxed than both Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

Week 2 – Phuket And Island Hopping

Thailand has some of the best islands in the world and Phuket is up there among the best islands in Thailand and ones you have to visit.

If you feel that you are charged up at Bangkok with the exploration and partying, then straight away leave for Phuket.

It has many naturally beautiful spots and beaches that will take your mind of things. People visit Phuket primarily to relax and explore the many beaches and limestone rock formations on the beach and as Isles.

There are plenty of experiences not to miss in Phuket. Also make sure you choose the islands wisely if you have a longer time in Thailand or if backpacking in Thailand. That way you can maximise the time you have and not spend it all travelling on ferries.

Day 1

Try to grab a bowl of soup and noodles, or Khao Pad and Kai Yang Grilled Chicken two of the specialties here at Phuket before you begin your day and chill by many of the beaches surrounding Phuket Island.

Day 2

Start with a day tour to Phang Nga Bay. There are day trips to the deep caves here at the bay that is sure to give you goose bumps with their thrill factor.

The tour will include exploring the limestone caves that have stalactites and rock formation. James Bond Island is one such marvelous rock formation that gives a stunning view.

Day Three & Four

Chill on the beach or explore the markets of Phuket’s Old Town.  In the evening you can go to spend the night and party like crazy on the Bangla Road, while watching one of the shows playing currently or else dance and relish the happiness there.

The famous street of Soi Bangla remains closed for traffic from the evening onwards but that just won’t be a problem for those going here for the best Thai experience.

Day 5 Free Day

Enjoy the beacheas dotted around the island, have a massage or chill by the hotel pool.

Day 6 & 7

Head into the Chalong area where the Big Buddha Statue up to the Nakkerd Hills. The 45-meter high white Buddha idol up to the hill is great to view and on your descent from the Nakkerd Hills, you can stop by at the Karon Viewpoint.

Here, you can get a fantastic view over the bay curving ahead until the Phang Nga Bay. You can further take a boat to the Ko-Phi or Phi-Phi Island. You can check out Maya Bay, which gained fame after Leonardo Di Caprio movie, The Beach. (Sadly now closed indefinitely)

You can go diving and snorkeling from the Anemone Reef or the Shark Point and explore the underwater life of Phi-Phi islands.

Traveling to other islands like Viking Caves, Bamboo Island and even trying out everything from rock climbing to exploring caves, Phi Phi will not disappoint you.

From Phi-Phi island, there is boats and ferry services to the other equally destination that is Krabi Island.

Where To Stay In Phuket

For tips on where to stay in Phuket, I have a post on the best areas to stay in Phuket which includes tips on hotels for budget, mid-range and luxury budgets.

Week 3 – Krabi Islands and Koh Samui

As the penultimate leg of your Thai trip comes to a close, how about ending it on a memorable beach destination?

Krabi Islands is one of those parts around the world where you can still expect some serenity on the beach. The presence of more than one awesome beach is perhaps the reason for you to get that very necessary relaxation you have craved all your life.

Day 1 Krabi

Once you reach Krabi Islands, the first step is to book a boat that shall take you to Railay Beach. Though a little away from the city, it is definitely better at that way.

The Railay Beach has lush green landscape, amazing hilltops, and uneven landscape and the beach waters in its cerulean tones to mesmerize you.

You can spend an entire day here and then go back to your resort in Krabi. Likewise, you can spend the rest of the evening exploring the Krabi Town. Usually, the tourists spend an entire day exploring Railay Beach, and it is not surprising.

Day 2

The next day you can go to the Pak Bia Islands if you love white sandy beaches and more beach activities. The island is ideal for those willing to detox and relax or simply cannot have enough of the waters.

You can even take a boat and go back to Krabi Island. If you have time in hand, you can even try going to the Thung Teao Forest Natural Park and take snaps of the beautiful Emerald Pool.

Day 3

Your next day can begin with a trip to the dense forest of Khao Phra Bang Khram Natural Reserve adjacent to which there is the Klong Thom Hot Springs.

Tourists can just take a dip in these naturally therapeutic waters that have come out of volcanic rocks. Just 46 km from Krabi is a quaint little island called the Mu Koh Hong where you can camp and indulge in water sports like snorkeling and even dining on some of the sumptuous seafood.

The Perfect 3 Weeks In Thailand Itinerary - Things to do in Thailand for 3 weeks

Day  4    Koh Samui

After spending four days in Krabi and taking in all the sights and sounds, you can surely make your way to yet another scintillating destination on your trip.

That destination is the Koh Samui, and you have an option of taking a bus and ferry to go to this island from Krabi Islands. Likewise, a faster alternative is to go by air, which might take less than an hour but with a higher price tag.

Day 5

There are so many cool things to do in Koh Samui, but for the first day you can go to Chaweng from where you can take a thirty-minute cab to Koh Samui’s Big Buddha temple.

The temple is on a high altitude allowing you to get a bird’s eye view of the nearby places. You can then check out the Secret Buddha Garden where there are plenty of Buddha statues made of stone. Great spot to be in for a photographer!

Next stop can be the Wat Plai Laem temple that has an imposing statue of Guanyin, a goddess with eighteen arms. The massive size of this idol is something to take in with time and of course, the overall beauty of the temple’s environs will be awe-inspiring.

A visit to Koh Samui is incomplete without the day ending with shopping at the Chaweng Night Market from where you can shop for anything under the sky literally.

Day 6/7

Next day, take a ferry to the party islands of Koh Tao where you can spend the daytime diving or swim through the crystal-clear waters around the island.

Post sunset, the party begins and goes on till mornings and that is what makes the Koh Tao even more important. Another day trip can be to the Koh Phangan. You can go back to Koh Samui by ferry in as little as thirty minutes.

Not just islands and beaches, Koh Samui also has Na Muang Waterfalls and Ang Thong Marine Park for those who love nature at its pristine best.

As the trip concludes, you will surely have this feeling of wanting to visit the soulfully captivating country of Thailand again.

This is what makes Thailand all the more special and great in every way. I have left enough room in the itinerary if you wanted to switch it up and add Khao Sok National Park, Koh Lanta, Koh Phangan or Surat Thani which is easily accessible from Koh Samui.

Where To Stay In Thailand

As far as where to stay in Thailand during your 3 weeks Thailand itinerary really depends on your budget and preferred comfort levels. I shared where we stayed in Bangkok in addition to providing a guide on the best areas to stay in Bangkok. I did the same for Phuket where I shared a guide on areas to stay in Phuket but also shared tips on the best hotels in Phuket for all budgets.

We sampled a couple of places in Phuket at low, mid and luxury budgets which have all ben documented on the blog. By far my favourite website to book my hotels is Booking.Com  as well as Hotels.Com which had some great January travel discounts. One of the reasons I love Booking.com is that you can book hotels in advance and still be able to cancel them if your plans change.

So you can book your hotels for Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui in advance but should you should to add say Chiang Rai or another Thai city you can change your booking.com easily on their site but for travellers they also have a great mobile app that I find really handy to use on the move. For additional tips on where to stay in Chiang Mai, check out Treksplorer.

What To Pack For A Trip To Thailand | 3 Weeks In Thailand – What To Pack

So, what to take to Thailand for 3 weeks? Thailand is a pretty tropical country so even in the rain season, you will find that it clears quickly and before you know it, the weather is good enough to lounge on the beach. For tips on what to pack for Thailand, check out  Wandering Quinn.

Planning A Trip To Thailand | 3 Weeks In Thailand Costs

So we are now on to how much money to take on the ultimate Thailand vacation. As I mentioned above when it comes to hotels it really depends on your preference on comfort. You will be glad to know that there are plenty of amazing places to stay from hostels to luxury hotels and villas that won’t break the bank. Food is also super cheap too as you have your pick from tasty street food to lux Michelin star restaurants.

Your flight will mainly be the most costly of expenses for the trip to Thailand. Hotels can be as cheap as £20 a night. For budget hotels in Phuket check out my review of Gold Diggers Resort and for mid range check out my post on Ikon hotel and for something more in the Luxury hotel market we also stayed at Renaissance Hotel in Phuket.

To estimate your hotel expenses I would recommend using the above Thailand itinerary and then costing the hotel nights in each city for the type of hotel you prefer. Once you do that I would then suggest you cost at least one whole day tour in each city. So for Phuket, we enjoyed 2 island hopping day trips which saw us exploring Phang Nga Bay as well as James Bond Island the various activities included in that.

Most of these tours will range from £30 and up depending on activities included. Again I have included a couple of tours for inspiration but also check out Viator Tours for more.  You can easily budget for £100o for your trip after your flight. If you stay in reasonably priced accommodation, factor in tours, transport and food and you could do that on a budget. For a more mid-range budget to lux you are looking at £2-3k+.

Travel package to Thailand

If you are one of those that prefers everything to be arranged and know the budget of the trip then maybe consider looking at 3-week travel package to Thailand. Contiki tours do amazing package trips to Thailand as well as multi-country package tours to Asia. The guarantee plenty of fun as you take to your Thailand 3 weeks backpacking trip. Also, GAdventures and Exodus Travels do amazing package tours to Thailand and Asia.

Getting Around In Thailand

So, if you are one of those thinking “is 3 weeks in Thailand enough“, hope the above gives you an idea of just how much exploring you can do in as well as an inkling to how much money to take to Thailand for 3 weeks.  The other element I wanted to include is that of getting around between the islands and the cities.

We flew from Bangkok to Phuket and then used ferries between islands. Flights you can easily book with Expedia or directly with Air Asia. Our sites between cities were not more than £50 return so if you are buying one way expect even less but also look out for additional luggage charges so pack wisely.

Thai Trip Planning Q1. What’s a Good Itinerary For 1 Week or 2 Weeks in Thailand?

If you only have one week in Thailand I would strongly suggest doing 3 days in Bangkok, 2 days exploring and 1-day floating marking. Then one of the islands for beaches temples and relaxing. Phuket I would say needs a minimum or at least 3-4 days in Phuket because you are going to use up one of those days for day trip to Koh Phi Phi islands. If you have 2 weeks then I recommend adding Chiang Rai,  Krabi or Koh Samui. Again, having lots of exploring time and then islands for relaxation and island hopping.

Thai Trip Planning Q2. When Is The Best Time To Visit Thailand?

Ideally, any time is great as the weather in Thailand is tropical and tends to be warm all year round but I don’t like traveling during the rainy season especially if your main trip is all about beaches. I would see the best times to visit Thailand is around December, November, and January.

Thai Trip Planning Q3.  What Is The Best Itinerary For 5 Days In Thailand?

My advice here is similar to the question on what to do in Thailand for one week. Do maybe 2 days in Bangkok, one full day or even 2 full days of exploring. If you do one day in Bangkok and then a day trip to the floating market. Then book your flights in advance for Phuket, Koh Samui or any other destination of your choice in Thailand. Make sure you also book your tours in Bangkok or tours in Phuket in advance. Also, make sure you book your flights out of Bangkok to Phuket in Advance so everything is set for your trip to Thailand. One of the cheapest airlines with plenty of flights in Thailand and heading to Cambodia, Vietnam and surrounding countries is Air Asia. You can book flights in advance via Expedia just like we did. Tickets tend to be in the region of £50 for a return.

Thai Trip Planning Q4. What’s the best itinerary for Thailand with children?

Many of the cities in Thailand cater to family holidays. There are hotels for both budget and luxury that cater to those wanting to travel to Thailand with Children. While it was just myself and my boyfriend for this trip many of the places we visited can be explored with children. Many of the tours we did in Phuket had children on them. If you are able to you can also have your own private family longboat for you and your family. They are not expensive and it means that you can do your Thailand itinerary with some parts that include children’s activities. There is the Trick Eye Museum and Upside Down House in Phuket which is a hit with children. Many of the island hopping tours are also just as great and suitable for kids too.

Thai Trip Planning Q5. Whats The Best Itinerary For A Couple Visiting Thailand

As I mentioned above it was myself and my boyfriend on this trip so I guess that counts as couples visiting Thailand. My advice for couples when you plan your trip to Thailand or if you are planning on spending time in Phuket, pick places that allow you to have plenty of privacy. Like an apartment, or a villa. I shared in a post on our private villa in Phuket, or you can also pick from the many amazing hotels that come with private beaches vs public beaches. I have also shared a post on the best areas to stay in Phuket to help you narrow things down. Another thing that some couple might consider in their island hopping for their trip to Thailand is renting their own long boat tour.

There you have it, a perfect 3 week Thailand itinerary. Is there any other place you would have included?

The Perfect 3 Days Lisbon Itinerary In The Portuguese Capital

August 16, 2018 by admin 28 Comments

3 day lisbon itinerary

Haven’t experienced Portugal’s hilly capital that is Lisbon? Sit back as I walk your through my 3 days Lisbon itinerary that will have you exploring this beautiful city, from one end to the other.

Checking out Unesco world heritage sites, São Jorge Castle,  Jeronimos Monastery, Santa Justa Lift,  Rua Augusta Arch and many more of Lisbon sights in this 3-day travel guide to Lisbon, Portugal.

You will take in the best views from Lisbon Miradors (viewpoints), explore the riverside from Park of Nations to the Belem Tower, and check out Lisbon’s cool neighbourhoods the likes of Bairro Alto, Alfama, and Belem and listen to some “Fado” as you take on the historical streets of Lisbon.

If visiting Lisbon hasn’t been on your radar, now is the time to go, but don’t forget to factor in some time for Sintra and Porto.

To start you off I recently introduced you to Lisbon’s Belem district with a travel guide of the area covering the best sights in Belem, including details of entry prices and how to get to them in addition to a couple of watering holes to give you a break from the exploring.

In this post, I showcase things to see in Lisbon in 3 days with a sample itinerary for 3 days in Lisbon which can easily be combined with many of the Lisbon Tours in the city and beyond.

From the pastel-colored buildings to the Tagus Estuary and Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge, viewed from the gorgeous MAAT viewpoint.

If you only have 2 days in Lisbon enough of that time can be used to cover off some of the popular places in the city.

3 Days Lisbon Itinerary At A Glance

So, what are the best things to do and see during a 3-day visit to Lisbon? Below is a glance of an itinerary covering things to do in Lisbon including. All the best attractions to include on your visit. If you are short on time I also have a one-day itinerary for Lisbon, in addition to the best cafes in Lisbon.

  • Day 1
    • Barrio Alto
    • Rossio Square, Santa Justa Lift, Carmo Convent
    • Augustus Arch and Lunch At Time Out Market
    • Pink Street and Nightlife
  • Day 2
    • Roam freely in Alfama District
    • Explore Belem District, MAAT, Belem Tower, 25 Abril Bridge
    • Sample nightlife in Barrio Alto
  • Day 3
    • Options: Explore more of Lisbon or day trip to Sintra
    • Or Swap Day 2 and 3 around and explore Alfama before leaving

3 Days In Lisbon Itinerary

To get the most of your 3 days in Lisbon, I would highly recommend staying central in the city to make exploring a lot easier.

During our visit as we were arriving at different times, I chose to stay in Bairro Alto, while my friends were in Old Town and Alfama. Both of these places are great with plenty to see and do nearby.

We shall be checking these places out along the way in the 3 day Lisbon itinerary but for more details on where to stay in Lisbon check out my post on where to Stay in Lisbon here and my guide to the best hotels in Lisbon here, covering budget mid-range and luxury.

Day 1 –  Lisbon Rua da Bica, Barrio Alto, Rossio Square, Santa Justa Lift and Pink Street Nightlife

There are plenty of flights to Lisbon, I recommend a flight that arrives in the early evening so you can settle in and starts exploring the next morning.

Failing that get in early to maximise time in the capital. Below are what to see in Lisbon in 3 days but if you only have 2 days in Lisbon. You can skip the day trip and still be able to the below.

The first part of this itinerary covers what to do in Lisbon for 2 days with an option for a day trip to Sintra on day 3.

10am Breakfast and Rua da Bica

Grab a quick breakfast and head out on tram 28 to Rua da Bica 1. This is your first top on Lisbon’s cool and Instgrammable spots in Lisbon.

I would recommend walking down and then taking the tram back up to the top. Street art in Lisbon is plenty so if you will lover of this colourful art then you will love this place.

11.30 Barrio Alto

Walk back to Barrio Alto’s Mirador. Here you will have some of the best views this side of the city.

From here to get a partial view of Alfama’s beautiful monastery, River Tagus, the castle and if you are lucky there is someone play some Fado music as you check out the views. I also forgot to mention the beautiful tiered gardens you can find here.

From here just a few meters from the Mirador you have an elevador(tram) going down to Rossio or you can walk down.

You really only need 30 minutes here unless. Barrio Alto is better to check out in the evenings as its a lot quieter in the day.

12pm Rossio Square, Santa Justa Lift, Carmo Convent

Head to Rossio Square also known as Pedro IV Square (Portuguese: Praça de D. Pedro IV). This beautifully tiled square is a meeting point for both locals and tourist and has been for centuries.

Some of the cafés shops surrounding the square date back from the 18th century, like the Café Nicola, where poet Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage used to meet friends.

Other traditional shops include the Pastelaria Suíça and the Ginjinha, where the typical Lisbon spirit (Ginjinha) can be tasted.

While you are here there are a couple of shops and cafes too where you can buy the famous cans of sardines.

If you dont manage to you can also check one of the best sardine shops in Lisbon, the Conserveira de Lisboa, known as one of the best souvenirs shops in Lisbon.

Grab a couple of shots and check out a couple of the shops before walking to Santa Justa Lift aka Elevador de Santa Justa.

Take in the views from the viewing deck for a few minutes but don’t head to far as another hidden gem is a walk across the bride of Santa Justa viewpoint to Carmo Convent church ruins.

I also share shots of this beautiful church in my recent post. If you have a Lisboa Card you can get free access to many of Lisbon’s tourist sights apart from a couple where you get a discount.

With the Lisboa card you get 30% off entrance to Carmo Convent.

From Carmo Convent take the lif back down to the street level and walk through the street to Augustus Arch.

Augustus Arch also has a viewing deck but having just come back form Santa Justa I would recommend coming back to Ausgustus viewpoint next day if you must otherwise the views aren’t too different from Santa Justa other than being right by River Tagus.

Entry cost for Santa Justa Lift/Elevador de Santa Justa: €5 or  €1.45 with the Lisboa Card

Entry cost for Carmo Convent: €3.50 and €2.80 with the Lisboa card.

Tip: Grab a quick snack at any cafe on Rossio Square(very small snack because lunch is at 2pm!)
You may also have noticed Rossio Station nearby as this is where trains to Sintra leave from.

2pm Augustus Arch and Lunch At Time Out Market

By now its probably 2 or after 2 and you are most likely hungry. Resist the urge to grab food here unless you are super hungry.

Quickly check out the views from Augustus Arch, a monument that offers access to a vantage point with a 360º view of the city, then take a tram and head to Time Out Market in Mercado da Ribeira.

Time Out Market Lisboa is a food hall located in the Mercado da Ribeira at Cais do Sodre in Lisbon, Portugal.

Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, there is something for everyone! The Lisbon market has 35 kiosks selling regional specialties, such as Azeitão sheep’s cheese, Alentejo ham, custard tarts from cafe Aloma, sardines, wines and chocolates.

You can also find five top chefs restaurants here. The original fish, fruit and vegetable market stalls occupy the other half of the landmark building.

Cost of tickets for Augustus Arch: Free with Lisboa Card.

4 pm Free Roaming

Explore the Cais do Sodré area as there are markets, shops and you also have riverside views from here.

6pm Pink Street and Nightlife

Head out to Pink Street another Instagram gem which also doubles as a cool spot for nightlife in Lison. My favorite was Pensão Amor which is featured in my post on Pink Street on the blog. Here you will find bars, cafes and nightclubs.

If you want to experience the nightlife in the Portuguese capital, this is a great place to start. For those with an interest to its history, this was where Sailors used to head to for a little “joy ride” after months away at sea with no female company.

You now have the evening free to roam Lisbon at your leisure.

Day 2  Alfama District, Belem District – MAAT, Belem Tower and The Bridge

10am Alfama District

Alfama is one of Lisbon’s oldest neighborhoods and was founded by the Arabs who gave it the name “Al-hama” meaning ‘source of hot water, good water’. A visit to Lisbon is not complete without exploring Alfama District.

I have deliberately not set out a timed agenda for Alfama in this part of your Lisbon Itinerary. Day 2 in Lisbon’s Alfama is all about getting lost in the little alley’s and hidden paths to discover the charms of the neighborhood that are considered the heart of the city.

Exploring Alfama feels like you have totally left Lisbon miles avail as it feels like you are exploring small villages but like much of Lisbon, here you also have plenty of little Miradurors to take in views of Lisbon.

Listen to Fado music echoing through the alley from cafes or viewpoints. One thing to note if visiting Lisbon with kids prams is just how hilly it is so be prepared for that.

Tourist sights to check out in Alfama include: São Vicente de Fora Church, the National Pantheon, and the d’elRei Fountain – the first public fountain in Lisbon.

3 pm – Belem District, MAAT, Belem Tower, 25 Abril Bridge

Using public transport in Lisbon is fairly easy. From around 2.30pm take a tram from the city center to Belem. Belem has plenty to see and do that it could easily take up a whole day but we will only explore for half of the day.

For a more detailed view of places to see in Belem check out my post on Belem district here. Places to see in Belem include Belem Tour, Monument of Discoveries, 25 Abril Bridge, MAAT, Palaces and Gardens and Jerónimos Monastery.

Suggest route to explore Belem. Start with the Jeronimos Monastery, pick between Palace and Belem to save time. I suggest the palace and then head to Belem after as you can see it from the outside. From Belem Tower walk to the monument of Discoveries and continue on to MAAT.

Walking is right by the river as most of the sights are within walking distance to each other so no need to get on a tram or bus. MAAT is absolutely beautiful just before sunset and then catch the twinkle of 25 Abril Bridge at night.

  • Cost of tickets for Belem Tower: €6.00 and free for children under 14.
  • Cost of tickets for MAAT:  €5 or €9 for a combined ticket.
  • Cost of tickets for Jeronimos Monastery: €12.00.

Tip: If you have the Lisboa Card majority of the sights in Belem are free in addition to a discount for the others.

7 pm Food and Nightlife

The evening is all yours but my suggests are grab a bit at the nearby marina next to 25 Abril Bridge or take the tram back to Lisbon Central and experience the nightlife in Barrio Alto. There is music, clubs and lively restaurants in this area.

Day 3 Sintra Day Trip From Lisbon

If you have a full day available to you I would highly recommend a day trip to Sintra. You can catch the train to Sintra from Lisbon from Rossio station which you may have spotted on day one in Lisbon itinerary above.

If you don’t have a full day then either re-trace your steps back to any of the places above that you didn’t get much time to see or head over to explore Principe Real More details below on how to get to Sintra.

If you opt for a day trip to Sintra from Lisbon, I would recommend starting with Pena Palace as it is right at the top. We actually took a taxi from the train station as we arrived super early in Sintra. Note that its a bit of a distance to the sights and now walking distance.

There is a bus stop right outside Sintra station but as we weren’t sure of bus times and the taxis are not that expensive. We took one to drop us off outside Pena Palace. We waited a couple of minutes for it to open. Also, note that your Lisboa card doesn’t allow you free entry to Pena Palace but you do get a discount.

If you haven’t already bought your ticket I would suggest you get to the ticket booth as the lines here form from nowhere!

From Pena Palace, you can then walk to Quinta de la Regaleira. And then pick a place between Moors castle and the other castle as a Day in Sintra is simply not enough but seeing Pena Palace and Quinta de la Regaleira are a start.

I would suggest 2 days if you can stay overnight in Sintra otherwise bear in mind train times back to Lisbon.

I will be sharing more pictorials of Pena Palace and Quinta de la Regaleira shortly.

In addition to Sintra, there are many beautiful beach towns in Portugal worth check out if you have additional time in Portugal.

Staying Longer? 4 or 5 days in Lisbon

If you are staying longer in Lisbon say doing a Lisbon itinerary of 5 days then I would recommend a couple of options.

You can use the do 2 days for Lisbon, day 3 and 4 in Sintra or one day in Sintra then day 4 to explore Principe Real district of Lisbon if not retrace some of the places you enjoyed from above.

You can also do 2 days in Lisbon, one in Sintra and one day in Caison to get a taste of Lisbon’s Atlantic beaches.

If you have more time then doing a Lisbon itinerary of 7 days means that you can really pace your visit the cool districts of the Portuguese capital.

Lisbon is so beautiful with plenty to see that you may actually opt to revisit one or two of the miradors or tourist sights and just chill to some Fado music and a drink on the side.

If you have more time, you might also want to check out the beaches in Lisbon and surrounding areas.

How To Get Around In Lisbon & Getting From The Airport to City Centre

  • From Airport to Lisbon City Centre: Portela Airport is the main airport in Lisbon and is about 7km from the city centre. The Red Line on the metro is the fastest way to get from the airport to Lisbon city centre as its a 20-minute connection to and from the airport/Saldana. There are also regular buses from the airport to city centre- mainly to bus stations Sete Rios and Entrecampos. Buses are usually 3.50 Euros and metro is 1.50 Euros for a single journey and 6 Euros for a 24-hour ticket. Metro runs from 6.30am to 1am.

  • Getting Around Lisbon: Lisbon has the Via Viagem Card which is a contactless/electronic card. It is also reloadable. Once you get the card there are automatic ticket machines and ticket offices in metro stations. You can top it up wth a single ticket or a 24 hour ticket for the bus and metro. You can also use the Via Viagem Card on the trams as well. While exploring Lisbon one of the best ways to get around as well as see most of the sights in Lisbon is by way of Tram 28! This tram offers a charming way to quickly visit a few of the sights above as it rambles through Lisbon’s prettiest and most historic streets. Tram 28 starts in Barrio Alto, and goes through the shopping district of Baixa and Chiado before passing through the churches and cobbled hills of Alfama and Graca neighbourhoods. Tram 28 departs every 15 minutes.

  • Getting From Lisbon to Sintra: Trains to Sintra from Lisbon leave from Rossio Station and depart every 20 minutes. The journey time from Lisbon to Sintra is 40 minutes and tickets cost 2.10 Euros for one way.
  • For a detailed post on how to get around Lisbon, check out my recent post.

What to Pack For Lisbon

Lisbon has a subtropical-Mediterranean climate which means the city has very short and mild winters and really warm summers.

The hottest months are between June, July, August and September when the weather is above 20 degrees.

The rest of the months its between 14 and 21 degrees. For tips on what to pack for Lisbon, check out my post on what to pack for Europe.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary | Food Beaches Views & Sunsets

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

With just 3 days in Santorini you can really explore the island to the max! A star of the Greek islands and many a postcard.

Santorini attracts honeymooners, photographers, girls and boys summer adventures sailing around the Caldera or lounging on the volcanic rich sandy beaches.

With that in mind, my Santorini 3 day itinerary takes you on a journey exploring Oia, Thira, and Imerovigli taking in the white-washed luxury island-living with the pretty blue domes. There is something for all on this little island with some of the most beautiful views over the Caldera I have ever seen.

Santorini is located in the Southern Aegean Sea and is prominent of the islands that form the archipelago of Greek islands. Santorini is often pictured as a coastal heaven with small-whitewashed stones, blue domes, and roofs to blend in with the color of Aegean Sea stretching beyond.

A trip to Greece is incomplete without a visit to this scenic spot. The island is dotted with cliffs and quaint village that transport the visitors to times untouched by the busy life.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary

So without further ado, my 3 day itinerary in Santorini will take you around the island exploring some must-see places in Santorini, from Santorini Beaches, markets,  restaurants, hidden gems and of course where to stay in Santorini.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

Day 1 In Santorini – Exploring Oia And Fira And Surrounding Villages

Morning 9 – 2pm:

I would reserve day 1 in Santorini to exploring Oia, Firá, and other small towns with their winding steps away from the crowds once you have got a view shots of the blue domes where everyone else is trying to squeeze in a selfie or 10! We all know how long it takes to get that money shot.

You will find that Santorini and the towns like Oia and Amoudi Bay have retained a slice of history.

Oia is located at the northwestern edge of Santorini and has some of the most stunning views on the island. Oia port is scenic with some of the finest boats and yachts anchored there.

The Maritime Museum is worth a leisurely stroll before you stop by at one of the many Greek cafes and restaurants.

Be sure to try the baked eggplant and various other authentic Greek delicacies while breaking away for a little respite as well as a moment to catch a break and people watch.

You may have heard of the Greek salads, now you can have a real deal. These salads are heavenly and with a sprinkle of olive oil and some fresh vegetables and cheese, these are as good as they can get.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

There are so many hidden alleys leading to steps where the crowds disappear. Don’t be afraid to explore. We had ample time to walk around and found ourselves with spots where we didn’t see tourists as they were all busy concentrating on the usual spots with blue domes next to them.

There are plenty of spots with great views and little tourist footfall to disturb you. Allow you a little serenity on such a busy island.

Morning Santorini tips: If you are up for it sunrise around the best times to get some cool shots of the Blue Domes.

Afternoon Options 2pm – 7pm

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

  • From Oia to head to Fira. Fira, the capital of Santorini is a must-visit spot if you wish to explore some historic spots. There is a Museum of Prehistoric Thera, which houses items from the excavations from surrounding areas.

  • For the more adventurous ones can hike up and visit the Skaros Rock(brown protruding rock in the image below) to get a breathtaking view of the island.

  • Head back to Oia and take the cable car or walk down the steps to the bottom of the island to get another view of Santorini and the Caldera across the sea. You can either walk up again(good shoes needed), take the cable car or even one of the donkey rides. These are working donkeys but I would advise you not to get on one if they look severely overworked. Take the cable car instead.

  • Watch the Sun the sunset go down. Bear in mind that people flock to the island to catch a glimpse of Santorini sunsets to prepare for a little stamped but if you choose to end your exploring with a hike to Sarkos Rock then you will be rewarded with great sunset views and no crowds. If you chose to head back to Oia for the sunset then prepare for the crowds unless you are staying at a hotel with a Caldera view then you are in for a treat with little crowded fuss.

Evening: 8pm onwards

How does a platter of freshly caught seafood and Greek music sound to finish off day one in Santorini? End the evening with dinner by the bay.

If you haven’t had enough of the coastal cliffs and ports by now, then a visit to Ammoudi Bay is a must.

This is a popular spot on the island but if too busy bear in mind that there are plenty of other spots to eat on the island with the fresh catch of the day.

Stopping by at some of the other authentic diners for dinner is going to be on the cards with the many spots offering great food and a view to boot. You will find bars and restaurants serving some of the finest food paired with locally grown wines.

Day 2 In Santorini – Santorini Catamaran Sunset Cruise

Day two on the island, you have explored on foot, drank plenty of greek wine, slept it off and now ready for an exciting day to in Santorini to take in the island from a different vantage point.

The best way is by booking for the Santorini catamaran sunset cruise. This is simply another must when visiting Santorini, whether doing 2 days in Santorini, 3 days or even 5 or 7 days on the Greek island.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

Sailing down the azure blue sea off Santorini is just what the doctor recommends for the die-hard romantics out there.

The reason why I also prefer and recommend the catamaran tours is because they are all mainly adults and no children – unless you charter the whole thing as a large group or family.

I have nothing against children, I have plenty of nieces and nephews. Just the thrill of boarding the catamaran sailing boats, yachts, or even catamarans with your love or friends with plenty of wine and adult conversation as you many stops by the many beautiful beaches in Santorini – all with different coloured sand.

The catamarans will have a BBQ and drinks on-board for the guests. This trip will take the travelers to the Cyclades, Oia, and other scenic spots.

The trip will also include a guided tour to the volcanic hot springs and rejuvenating mud spa session.

A trip back on the Catamaran in the evening with drinks will be all that one needs to unwind as you watch the sun disappear into the horizons behind.

Day 2 tip: Find out when the touring car collects you as you may be able to sneak in a little exploring time in the morning, although if you too my advice on lounging on the bay with plenty of food, wine and conversation then I can understand if you choose to have a lye in before the tour.

Day 3 In Santorini – Exploring The Beaches Of Santorini

So, after spending the first day soaking in the beaches and sailing, the best way to spend day 3 in Santorini will be to go exploring around the land and taking to the beaches for some relaxation.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

Stretching out Basking under the Greek Sun with a cold drink is one way to end the time in Santorini. Yes, there are various places worth visiting, and no end to the hectic things to do.

With only 3 days in Santorini, the best way to end it is to experience the minerals of the volcanic sand around the island in all their glory.

From black sand, red sand, white sand and the usually coloured sand thrown in. The Kamari beach is a great start for everyone who wishes to have a stunning view of the pristine waters and cliffs. You may have stopped by here when touring the island on the sunset boat tour.

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

Nearby you also have Perissa beach with its black sand beach. Bear in mind that some of the beaches aren’t serviced beaches, as in there are no loungers or beach, one of these is Red beach as beautiful as it is.

My favourite beach was Black sand beach aka Perissa beach. There are restaurants there, there are markets, loungers you can rent.

You can even hire snorkeling and diving gear and go a little adventurous if you cannot wait to explore the Santorini Waters plus that beautiful black sanding between your toes…SOLD!!!…For a detailed guide to Santorini beaches to help you chose s perfect spot to unwind before leaving then check out my guide to the best beaches in Santorini.

Staying Santorini Longer Than 3 Days?

If you are visiting for 4, 5 or even 7 days, then be sure to add a wine-tasting tour to this 3 day itinerary for Santorini. You can add a day wine-tasting the homegrown wine of Santorini right at the wineries nestled at the neighboring hills.

These wine-tasting tours are on offer by all the hotels and tour operators at Santorini. They will be driving you to the finest wineries, take you through a trip to the cellars, and show you some of the samples to taste and possibly even buy some to use later.

Overall, the trip to Santorini is one for the bucket list and as some as the island is, there is plenty to do and I really recommend making the time to just lounge on one of the many beautiful beaches and taking in all the beauty this greek island has to offer than trying to see everything in so little time. Definitely one worth coming back to.

How To Get To Santorini

From Athens

Travelers may take the flight from Athens and reach Santorini’s airport in Fira. Besides this, other charter flights fly to Santorini from time to time during the tourist season.

Santorini is also accessible from Piraeus and Crete via ferry. Look out for my detailed post with different ferry services and times.

From Mykonos

I have a detailed posted here with details of the ferries and flights from Mykonos. This also includes details of ferry services whether fast or slow service from Mykonos. Also, bear in mind that flights from Mykonos to Santorini also stop in Athens.

Where To Stay In Santorini

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

Santorini 3 Day Itinerary - Santorini Greece

I have a guide to hotels in Santorini here which includes budget, mid-range and luxury hotels. If you want to save money then I would highly recommend considering Akrotiri.

It’s on the other side of the island. You will have stunning views of the Caldera for a fraction of the price in Oia, Thira.

If you budget is not a problem then hotels in Oia and Thira will have you wanting to grab the nex greek and rushing to the blue-domed churches to marry that sucker you can stay on the island and live happily ever after.

That is unless you already brought a husband or boyfriend then, in that case, get him feds so that he can’t complain at how long it will take to get the money shot with some many beautiful angles on over at some of these hotels with a view of the Caldera.

Bear in mind that Santorini hotels sell out very quickly so you need to look well in advance when planning your trip.

Things To Do In Agra India - Taj Mahal | Agra itinerary for 2 days and places to visit in agra in one day

There is a bit more Agra just a quick visit to the Taj Mahal. Whether you are doing a day trip from Delhi to Agra, or part of a golden triangle trip in India, if you are heading to Agra then this post for you! Top things to do in

Agra in one day including sample Agra itinerary for one day and Agra itinerary for 2 days. Includes all the best places to visit in Agra on a day trip, things to do in Agra at night, perfect for those doing the 2 day Agra itinerary and the best Agra tours to check out. Tips on all the Unesco world heritage sites to check out, how to do an Agra trip from Delhi via the railway station easily accessible in both cities.

A lot of travelers have the iconic Taj Mahal on their bucket list, the love story alone behind this magnificent tomb is enough to draw millions of people to Agra.  Having seen the beautiful Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, I had much more of an appreciation for the Taj Mahal as Humayun’s Tomb was what really gave birth to the idea of creating the Taj Mahal. You can read about that in my post. I wonder if that hadn’t come before it, as to whether we would have the Taj Mahal today.

There are many things to do in Agra city beyond the Taj Mahal from experiencing views of the beautiful Taj Mahal as you sip afternoon tea at Oberoi Hotel, to mingling in Agra’s markets to taking in the reach history of Agra Fort. You can visit the Agra on a day trip from Delhi or your can stay a day or two. You can check out my post on how to get from Delhi to Agra by train, car or bus.

Things To Do In Agra In One Day | Places to visit In Agra In A Day Trip

Ideally, you will want to spend at least 2 days in Agra so that you can fully appreciate the beautiful sights in Agra but if time is limited the below are also things to do in Agra in one day. If you have more time I would highly recommend you revisit Taj Mahal the following day but perphaps from a different angle like from across the river. Also below is a sample Agra itinerary for one day on how to spend a day in Agra.

The Taj Mahal

First things, first. One cannot visit Agra and not visit the Taj Mahal, a Unesco world heritage site. Yes, it may be crowded at times but all noise and the pitta-patta of feet loses its volume as you are just in awe of the beauty of the Taj Mahal. The intricate details of semi-precious stones inlaid into marble. The details and thought that weight into everything all the way down to the gates and fixtures on them to represent how long it took to build from start to finish.

Truly a sight to behold and one that cannot be rushed. Take it in from all angles and if you can from across the river. I have linked above to my post on our Visit to see the Taj Mahal in addition to my tips for visiting the Taj Mahal.

Explore Agra Fort

Having braved the crowds or the Indian Summer, depending on your visit. A visit to the important 16th-century Mughal monument known as the Red Fort of Agra. This is a short rickshaw ride from the Taj Mahal. This powerful fortress of red sandstone encompasses within its 2.5-km-long enclosure walls, the imperial city of the Mughal rulers.

The forbidding exteriors of this fort hide an inner paradise. There are a number of exquisite buildings like Moti Masjid – a white marble mosque akin to a perfect pearl. If you are with a knowledgeable tour guide you will learn about the many Emperors and their many wives and the lavish lifestyles of past time. Truly fascinating listening to the stories, they almost bring the building to life and suddenly you can imagine how people lived within the walls of the Fort.

If you cannot bring a guide I would highly recommend coming with a guidebook. Buildings without the stories behind them have no meaning and no soul to them. Don’t forget that Agra Fort was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty till 1638 so if buildings could talk…

Things To Do In Agra India - Taj Mahal | Agra itinerary 1 day and agra itinerary for 2 days Things To Do In Agra India - Taj Mahal Things To Do In Agra India - Taj Mahal

Fatehpur Sikri In Agra

In addition to Agra Fort if time permits, I would also add another UNESCO treasure in Agra that is Fatehpur Sikri.

The Taj Mahal features on almost every Indian itinerary; its emotional draw is unimaginable. However, there is another monument, not too far that fascinates travellers with its story. The 440-year-old World Heritage Site Fatehpur Sikri, or the City of Victory, was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar in the 16th Century after the prophecy, of a Sufi saint living in the village of Sikri came true and Akhbar’s heir was born.

The first planned Mughal city came as a tribute to the saint, featuring public buildings, residences, mosques and royal palaces. The Jama Masjid here is one of the largest mosques in the country.

See Tomb of I’timād-ud-Daulah aka  Baby Taj

Another one of the cool tourist spots in Agra, India you need to check out is the Tomb of I’timād-ud-Daulah is a Mughal mausoleum in Agra. Often described as a “jewel box”, sometimes called the Baby Taj, the tomb of I’timād-ud-Daulah is often regarded as a draft of the Tāj Mahal. Baby Taj is the tomb of Mir Ghiyas Beg and was built years before Taj Mahal.

Mir Ghiyas Beg, a Persian nobleman was Mumtaz Mahal’s grandfather and Emperor Jehangir’s wazir (chief minister). His daughter, Nur Jahan, who married Jehangir, built the tomb between 1622 and 1628, in a style similar to the tomb she built for Jehangir near Lahore in Pakistan. Mumtaz Mahal who we know, died in 1631 in, during the birth of her fourteenth child is now synonymous with the Taj Mahal.

Built by Shah Jahan had as a mausoleum for her, which is considered to be a monument of “undying love”.  India is filled with many more of these beautiful tombs around the country.

Things To Do In Agra India - Taj Mahal

Shop for marble and Persian-style carpets in Agra

With the history build the material and methods used to construct the Taj Mahal, one cannot miss on on the many shops selling marble fixtures. From jewellery boxes to plates, and chairs. Most of these shops will most likely have someone on hand to demonstrate the process of in-lay in Marble with various stones.

Explore The Indian Markets and Jewelry Stores

Among Agra attractions is, of course, the markets! We all love a bit of sparkle and one cannot go to India and not come back with some jewellery. Whether for yourself or as gifts. Like any small town in India, the core of old Agra is a warren of lanes, each with thriving local markets.

Browse the exquisite Bazaars of Kinari and Sadar and check out the embroidered material and inexpensive leather goods. The Rawatpara markets is rich with the aromas of spices and the hustle and bustle of a wholesale vegetable market at Sabji Mandi.

Also worth hunting out are the jewellery store with beautiful precious stone jewellery. I manage to huggle my way to a beautiful sterling silver tennis bracelet with aquamarine, one of my favourite stone, which would have cost me a pretty penny in England.

How to See Florence In One Day –  Things To Do In Florence In One Day

As big a Florence is, it’s not so big that you cannot see the majority of the main sights in Florence in one day.

The city is filled with so many treasures that while you cannot see everything in one day you can certainly the most out of a short stay in the city. Below I will take you through some of the places to visit in Florence in 1 day.

It would also highly recommend you to more than one day in Florence but understandable some trips are short, especially if you also want to combine it with a trip to visit Pisa or even Rome both of wich can be done by an easy train ride.

Ideally doing 2 days in Florence or even 3 days in Florence like we did would be better but for the sake of those that want to make the most of  Florence in a day, these are my recommendations on things to do in Florence in 1 day.

I want to provide tips on how to maximise your short stay or visit to Florence. Whether you are looking for what to see and do in Florence in one or 2 days or if you are looking for tips on tours in the city as well as what to do in Florence at night.

Most visitors to Florence will come through via Pisa as well did on the train.

If you are starting with Florence you can also do other day trips from Florence to Pisa and other places close by. I have also included Florence tours below.

My tips are based on an itinerary that starts int he morning but you can of course vary and change things up a bit according to how much time you have in the city.

8am  – A morning in Florence starts with panoramic views at Piazzale Michelangelo

Depending on which hotels in Florence you choose to stay at, grab some breakfast from the hotel or one of the local Italian cafes nearby and head to Michelangelo Piazza for an early morning view of the city’s skyline.

You can even head there early for sunrise. Piazzale Michelangelo offers panoramic views of Florence. Its located across the Arno River from the center of Florence.

If you are choosing to stay in Florence I would highly recommend a hotel near the River Arno. This way you are somewhere in the middle with Piazza Michelangelo on one side of the city and Duomo Square on the other.

No better way to start or end your explorations of Florence with a panoramic view of Florence at sunrise or sunset from Michelangelo Square.

From here head down to the river to Ponte Alle Grazie. From here you have perfect views of Ponte Vecchio. After taking in morning views across the river you are close by to Santa Croce Church.

Santa Croce is such a beautiful sight in itself not only for the detailed facade but this is also the burial site for Michelangelo, Rossini, Machiavelli, and the Pisan-born Galileo Galilei and many other greats.

The church is open to tourists when there are no prayer services taking place during the day.

Next to the church is Piazza Santa Croce, another one of one of Florence’s famous. If you havent had breakfast now is your chance as there are cafes, Italian leather shops and museums nearby.

11.30 am – 2.30pm – An Afternoon In Florence For Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio & Markets

Any Florence in a day tour need include a visit to Piazza del Duomo, Campanile, Uffizi Gallery and few more spots.

Whether you are doing 1 day in Florence, Italy these places are simply a must!  So from above, once you have explored Piazza Santa Croce, head along the river walk and walk towards Ponte Vecchio but before you get there, stop by Uffizi Gallery and check out the some of the most important works of an Italian Renaissance painting.

Allow at least an hour to 2 hours here then head to Ponte Vecchio.

From Ponte Vecchio head to San Lorenzo Market, made up of two halves. One half being Central Market (Mercato Centrale) and the other half being San Lorenzo Market.

Central Market is an indoor market and San Lorenzo is outdoor. Between the two markets, you will find stalls selling food, clothing, notebooks, souvenirs and various leather goods including bags, belts, wallets, jackets and many souvenirs.

By this time you are probably in need of lunch. Grab a bite and spend a few minutes exploring the market before heading further into town.

3.30pm – Exploring Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore  During A One Day Itinerary In Florence Italy

Among what to see in Florence is the unmissable church among things to do in Florence. With only 1 day in Florence a visit to Florence is not complete without exploring  Duomo Square. This is considered the heart of the city.

The square is a complex that includes five buildings. The Church of Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo), the Baptistery( considered to be one oldest building in the city and renowned for its doors), Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Church of Santa Reparata and the Museo dell’Opera.

Visiting the Dome is limited to a few visitors a day so tickets for this need to be purchased in advance. Otherwise, you also have the option to climb the Campanile which also offers amazing views of the city and the Duomo.

After checking out the complex, complete your afternoon with exploring the shopping centers, boutiques nearby in addition to of course checking out a few Italian Gelato store nearby.

Enjoy a moment of people watching while sipping Italian coffee and chill before embarking on an evening on the town in Florence.

You can also opt to learn all about cooking amazing Italian food. For more on that check out Joanna’s tips on how to choose the best cooking class in Florence.

So walk through Via dei Calzuioli, one of the most elegant streets in the historic centre of Florence: 400 metres long and lined with shops, it connects Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Signoria.

Best Time To Visit Florence

Florence is beautiful at any time of the year you visit. I have written about visiting Florence in winter, and one thing to note is that the days are a lot shorter and it rains a lot so exploring on foot is not as pleasant as beautiful as the city is.

My favourite time and in my opinion the best time to visit Florence is in spring and summer as the weather in Florence is a lot better.

From the end of March, April, through June, July, August and early September offer the best months to visit Florence.

Just bear in mind that this is also the period when crowds are greater too. So visiting in March April/May and end of August and September is probably more idea before the kids are on their summer breaks.

Getting Around In Florence | Getting To Florence

The main station in Florence is Santa Maria Novella (SMN), located in central Piazza della Stazione. If travelling or arriving via train, you will most likely come through this station.

Florence offers great access to other cities via train. You can easily take the high-speed trains from Florence to Bologna in 35 minutes, Florence to Rome in 1 hour 20 minutes, Milan in 1 hour 40 minutes, Venice in 2 hour 40 minutes, Naples in 2 hours and 50 minutes and Turin 2 hours 55 minutes.

Buses: There are plenty of electric buses moving around Florence. You can get away with exploring the city on foot.

While this is great during sunny days in Florence, not so pleasant during the winter months. For when you are tired of walking or want to explore beyond the historic centre. You have the C1, C2, C3 and D line bus routes in Florence.

For the best bus to explore majoring of the attractions in Florence, get the C1 bus as its most convenient for visiting many of the museums in Florence.

An ordinary ticket cost 1.20 Euros and is valid for 90 minutes. You can also get family tickets valid for one day costing 6 Euros for a family of 4.

There is also the Nottetempo ticket valid for one day. Make sure you validate your tickets when you get on the bus. Note: you need to purchase your tickets before getting on the bus.

Driving in Florence: Note that the historic centre of Florence is considered ‘Zona a Traffico Limitato’. Which means that its a restricted traffic zone. That means bicycles, electric vehicles, motorcycles and scooters are allowed to enter but not cars. I wouldn’t recommend hiring a car in Florence unless you are using it to explore beyond Florence.

Trams: There is the Tramway T1  Leanardo connects SM Novella Station in Florence to Sandicci and the T1 Vespucci connects the Airport to SM Novella Station.

How to get from Pisa Airport to Florence:  You can get to Florence from Pisa via train. From Pisa Airport you need to get to Pisa Centrale station and then take the train to Florence. For more details check out my post.

Getting To Florence

There are plenty of Budget airlines that will get you to Florence. From RyanAir, EasyJet and more.  You have access to two nearby airports to get to Florence.

From Firenze Airport, you can take a shuttle as well which runs every 30 minutes, with a journey time of 30 minutes.

You can buy tickets onboard the bus. Tickets are 6 Euros for one way and return is 10 Euros.  You can check airlines flying from your city to Florence via Expedia.

Great Ocean Road 1 Day Itinerary

October 25, 2016 by admin 4 Comments

Great Ocean Road Tour | The Scenic Route From Melbourne

The second installment of the posts on road tripping on an Australia’s Great Ocean Road tour. Australia’s most famous road tour routes.

I recently shared the first installment a few weeks ago which included a video with views of the 12 Apostles from a Helicopter.

The pictures in this post are from ground level while driving through the famous B100 road and wheezing past cute seaside towns, postcard picture kangaroos in open fields, tree-hugging koala bears and those beautiful beaches that we are used to seeing on Home and Away.

The beaches are plenty! Many you will have all to yourselves this beautiful stretch of the road gives you.

Great Ocean Road Tour | The Scenic Route From Melbourne

Great Ocean Road is one of those Road trips that you have to do in a lifetime. Even if you are limited on time, at the very least, a Great Ocean Road trip itinerary for 1 day is a must!

The history behind the road is also beautiful in itself in that is serves as a permanent memorial to those who died while fighting in World War 1. It was built by returned servicemen who upon return, many had no jobs and lacked the skills to get back into work.

It was through campaigning and lobbying by Alderman Howard Hitchcock to bring about the idea to get the servicemen involved in this audacious task of building this road and bring about an end in the isolation of many of the little towns in this part of the country.

It’s quite sad that he never actually got to see the end of it. However, it is said that they drove his casket road the whole stretch of the B100 Great Ocean Road.

The Perfect Great Ocean Road Itinerary For 1 Day

I would strongly advise you leave as early as possible if doing this tour via self-drive. Instead of embarking on the trip on my own as my friend wasn’t going to join me, I opted to do a full-day tour of GOR instead to save me having to drive for hours on my own.

The tour lasts about 10-12 hours. I left my friend’s place where I was staying at in Melbourne at 6.30am and rode the tram to the tour offices.
We then set off around 7am driving past quiet beaches, charming little towns, coast-hugging lighthouses, snaking through forests of eucalyptus trees.

We had a chatty Australian tour guide giving us the round down of a little history of Australia.
From how the Aboriginal lost most of their land, to how most of the Koala bears have chlamydia to the best surfing spots in Australia, as well as how surfing has spawned some of the best sports surfing brands out there.

If you are able to do this road trip and take your time over, say, 2-3 days, I would highly recommend it. On this occasion, though I only had time for a one-day road trip.

Which was supplemented by other road trips around Sorrento, Geelong, Yarra Valley and a few other spots that I can’t quite recall the names of?

You can read about my other adventures in Australia’s Sydney on the blog. If you decide to the longer version of this trip check out this handy guide on places to stay along Great Ocean Road.

First Stop: Torquay and Bells Beach

The first stop is the surf centric town of Torquay which marks the beginning of Great Ocean Road. If you are doing a tour, you may have a quick stop here that may allow leaving the bus to check out Bells Beach.

Belles’s Beach is located on the southern coast of Victoria and near Torquay. This is where you will find the world’s best surfers carving up the waves. This is also where the Rip Curl Surfing Competition is held.

If you are on a self guided tour, you have the option for a longer stop as well as take advantage of what is on offer.

Here you can also learn to surf in Torquay, home of Australian surfing. Lessons range from about 2 hours for about £35, which is not a bad price.

Pass Through Cute Towns And Villages Along Surf Coast

With only one day, there is not enough time to see everything, so you pass through Anglesea where the Marine National Park is located, the skip through Airneys Inlet where Split Point Lighhouse is located.

Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch

The historic Memorial Arch marks the start of the Great Ocean Road. Pretty much all tours will stop here for people to take pictures and as the Arch is on the coast, right next to it is a lovely beach to check and stretch your legs from the long drive from Melbourne.

Next Stop: Kennett River To View Wild Koalas

Kennett River is located halfway between Lorne and Apollo Bay along the Great Ocean Road. This is a quick stop for a toilet break and of course, check out the native animals are certainly.

You can spot koalas, king parrots, rosellas and kookaburras here. Many are around the trees and perfect for a little selfie with the cute furry bears in the background. From here it is onwards towards Apollo Bay.

Great Ocean Road lighthouse| The Scenic Route From Melbourne

Cape Otway Lightstation

While there are plenty of attractions along Great Ocean Road, you cannot miss a stop to visit Cape Otway Lightstation.

This is Australia’s most important lighthouse and established in 1848 above Bass Straight. There is a cafe here also known as the Lightkeeper’s Kitchen, with limited options but nonetheless offers a nice stop to refresh.

You can also experience the thrill of going up the spiral stairs in the lighthouse to the balcony offering amazing views of the rugged coastlines. If you are lucky you can also spot whales frolicking in the water below.

Drive To Port Campbell To Explore The Main Attractions Of Great Ocean Road

After a quick lunch from Cape Otway, is a drive towards Port Campbell National Park. This is where many of the must-see attractions on Great Ocean Road are located and all very close by to each other. Not to see are:

The 12 Apostles
The name was given to limestone rock formations which have been carved out of the headland by the fierce waves of the Southern Ocean.

The erosion of the limestone cliffs of the mainland began 10–20 million years ago, the stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs.

The 12  Apostles are located a cool 275 kilometres west of Melbourne, but even the four-hour-long drive doesn’t deter visitors. The rock formations have been shaped by nature into stacks that rise up majestically on the dramatic coastline.

While you are here, I highly recommend taking the scenic helicopter of Great Ocean Road. Check out my post for more details.

The Arch
Located only 6 kilometres west of Port Campbell, this natural rock formation was formed through erosion, much like the 12 Apostles at its best during rough seas when the waves crash in and around the arch. For great photo ops, take in an excellent view back towards the 12 Apostles.

London Bridge
Witness London Bridge, originally a natural archway and tunnel in an offshore rock formation, however, it collapsed in 1990 and became a bridge without a middle.

Loch Ard Gorge
Stand on top of the cliff and you’ll be amazed at the sheer size of the cliffs and the narrow opening out to sea at the Loch Ard Gorge. In rough weather the crashing waves put on quite a show.

Gibsons Steps

Take 86 steps down to the beach below to be dwarfed by the 70-metre high vertical cliff line. Walk along the beach to the enormous offshore rock stacks – Gog and MaGog.

Also right at the start of Great Ocean Road, you can also add Rainforest Walk to your itinerary, explore the Great Otway National Park.

What To Pack For Your Great Ocean Road Tour

  • Wear comfortable clothing and if visiting during warmer months, wear loose clothing that can be layered for when the temperature drops int the evening.
  • Bring a bottle of water and a snack or two. Even though you will stop for lunch and refreshments, this is a long drive when there may not be a lot of opportunities to shop.

  • Wear comfortable shoes that can also easily take on and off as you will be walking in sand and up and down steps to get to some of the viewpoints.
  • Bring a bathing suit and quick dry towel as you may want to partake in surfing lessons, the last thing you want is to start hunting for a swimsuit or trunks.

  • Bring battery/power bank and additional USB cable to charge any additional gadgets you might have.
  • Pack a hat and some suncream, the sun in Australia can be relentless.
  • Of course, pack a camera!

Tips on booking your Great Ocean Road tour

  • First, things first, this is not a drive I would recommend doing alone, its pretty long and tiring even with a group, let alone taking to this long coastal road alone. If you do, please make sure to take lots of breaks to rest along the way.

  • If you are In Melbourne then head to the Visitor Centre in Federation Square. They have plenty of leaflets on just about any tour you can do in Melbourne.

  • Pick up the leaflets and compare how many stops are included in the tour. Most will include the rainforest, a couple of beach stops or surfing stop, a stop at the lighthouse, Gibson Steps, Loch Arch Gorge and the 12 Apostles.

  • Check out the price of adding a helicopter ride over the 12 Apostles. The helicopters used are the same but some tour companies will charge between $99AUD or $130AUS.

  • The Visitor Center are usually only allocated a number of seats by the tour companies as they also sell tickets for the same tours. So if you happen to find that the places are sold out for the tour you want when booking from the Visitor Center, then book directly with the tour company as they may still have a spot for that tour from their own allocation.

  • For example, if each tour has about 10 places, they may sell 5 or 6 places from the  Visitor Center while they also hold and sell the other spots left.  You can also check out day trip tours on Get Your Guideand Viator.

Great Ocean Road Accommodations |  Where to stay great ocean road

There is plenty of beautiful scenery as you explore The great Ocean Road so naturally, you will want to stop and explore. This will mean stay overnight along this stretch of the coastline.

There are a few towns along the way to make the choice easier. I would love to re-do this trip as I met a couple of people who were doing Great Ocean Road tour on a much slower pace.

There are plenty of options for where to stay. From camping,Airbnb, guesthouses, hotels, and hostels.

If you are self-driving, this is a long journey I would highly recommend at a minimum doing an alternative to one day and doing 2 days itinerary of Great Ocean Road instead, this way you can add a bit more to your itinerary as well as to not rush through the one-day itinerary because you don’t have a lot of time or have the pressure of returning the car.

Another option for those that prefer to rent motor homes, there are plenty of caravan parks along the route where you can park up, rest and refresh.

How To Get To Great Ocean Road

If you are doing a tour, you really dont have to worry about how to get to Great Ocean Road but if you are doing a self-guided, self-drive tour of Great Ocean Road, the journey is fairly easy.

My friend and I had done have of it by rental car before taking a detour to Gunamatta Beach. So, by car from Melbourne to Great Ocean Road, you simply take the Princess Freeway and Geelong Ring Road to read the Surf Coast, Great Ocean Road and beyond.

If you are choosing to fly in, the best airport is Melbourne and from here you can collect a rental car and go exploring.

For getting to Great Ocean Road by public transport, there are trains that run regularly between Melbourne and Geelong, Colac, Warrnambool and from there you can take the buses that run the coastal route.

I would only advise this if you have a longer flexible itinerary and are staying along the route because you need to factor in waiting times for the buses in addition to what time places close along the route.
