To get started head towards the area called as Museum Square, to get started. 9 AM Rijkmuseum

If there is a landmark museum, known for safeguarding the ancient Dutch Culture intact, Rijkmuseum is the appropriate destination. The place holds masterpiece works from Johannes Vermeer, Frans Hals, and Rembrandt. Open to adults for 20 Euros, and the museum is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM on regular days. However, 3rd April to 28th August the museum is open till 9 PM on Fridays. As a visitor, you can skip the queue and purchase online tickets, costing 1 Euro lesser than the counter ticket. You can book the time blocks from 9h to 11h, 11h to 13h, 13h to 15h, and 15h to 17h. Museumkaart Holders and Amsterdam City Card users have exclusive booking benefits. The former cardholders have exclusive easy entry access, while the latter ones still require standing in queues.

3 PM Bloemenmarkt

Punting in Cambridge is one of the best ways to see the city. A punt is a narrow flat- bottomed boat that reminds you a bit of the gondola in Italy. A punt generally fits up to five adults where one stands at the rear and propels the boat with a long pole.

The design of the punt was developed in the medieval period to allow for easy navigation in the shallow water areas. This is the most relaxing way to spend a quiet summer afternoon, poling down the river weaving the historical sights of Cambridge

The botanic gardens is owned by Cambridge University and consist of 40 acres of gorgeously green, pink and yellow plants. This is an Arcadian paradise hidden behind a nondescript entrance at the station end of town.

  • Kettle’s Yard

This is the most homely art gallery you’ll ever find, run by the director Andrew Nairne. Both the house and the gallery reopened in February 2018 following an expansion of the facilities.

Kettle’s Yard galleries, shops and cafes are open Tuesday – Sunday, 11am – 5pm

Kettle Yard used to be the residence of Jim and Helen Ede, thanks to Jim’s job as a curator at the Tate Gallery managed to fill their home with artworks and later turn it into what it is today.

  • The Fitzwilliam Museum

The Fitzwilliam Museum is the art and antiquities museum of the university of Cambridge, located on Trumpington Street opposite Fitzwilliam Street. It was founded in 1816 and includes one of the best collections of antiquities and modern art in western Europe. This museum is the home of diverse trinkets, ornaments and paintings and offers free entry. The museum is closed on Mondays otherwise open 10 am to 5 pm all days except Sunday when it opens at 12 pm.

 

  • Corpus clock

The Corpus Clock is a large sculptural clock outside of the Taylor Library at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University, in the United Kingdom, at the junction of Benet Street and Trumpington Street, looking out over King’s Parade. The Corpus Clock is one of the most distinctive public monuments in Cambridge and has been admired by residents and tourists since its inauguration in 2008.

 

  • The round church

The round church is an Anglican church of the Holy Sepulchre. Since 1950 the church has been designated a Grade I listed building, and is currently managed by Christian Heritage. This is the second oldest building in Cambridge, built before the likes of Newton, Darwin and Milton were even alive. The Fitzbillies is the most Instagrammable cafe in the entire of Cambridge, this cafe is always packed and there might be queues for the weekends, so be prepared. This is where the arts students go to have a coffee and a chat between lectures and some of them even use the Fitzbillies to study in. this place does great big brunches, bloody marys and exquisite coffee. This place has been famous for its Chelsea buns since 1921 and no trip to Cambridge is complete without a visit. Favourite brunch dishes include the Full English Breakfast, Eggs Benedict and Smashed Avocado on Toast.  The brunch menu is served right through until 4pm with lots more dishes including soups, salads and delicious savoury tarts from lunchtime. Tea, served on a three-tier stand with a glass of champagne, or a cup of tea and a slice of cake, we’re sure to have something to delight.

This live music and arts venue is the place to see live comedy, music, theater, spoken word, movies, and more. The junction has three main performance spaces, Junction 1 with a standing capacity of 850, Junction 2 which is a seated theatre with a capacity of 220, and Junction 3 which is a smaller multipurpose space. This independent arts venue is one of the best in the UK, outside london.

  • The Green Man at Grantchester

This lovely village pub is the perfect place to grab a pint after a walk or punt along the river of Grantchester. This 400-year-old pub with a beer garden that leads to the River Cam and a crackling fireplace is open 11.00 to 23.00 every day except for Sunday when it opens at 12.00 am and closes at 22.30. The price class is medium on the drinks and food, grab a pint and a nice roast dinner before heading back to London, to finish of your Cambridge experience.

Getting To Cambridge from London

Although London is quite close to Cambridge, only 63 miles apart, the actual travel time can take longer than you’d think.

Train

Jump on one of the many Great Northern/ThamesLink Railway services that runs fast trains to Cambridge station from LondonKings Cross every few minutes, daily. The journey only takes a maximum of 90 minutes, if you’re lucky you will be in Cambridge within 50.

If Kings Cross is not the departure station for you there also run hourly trains from London Liverpool Street station, operated by Abellio Greater Anglia. This trip takes roughly the same time as the one departing from Kings Cross. This is the best station of choice if you are on a budget since they offer the cheapest choice of tickets.

If you buy your round trip fare in advance as two one way tickets the fare will be around £14 from Liverpool street compared to a round trip ticket purchased at Kings cross which averages on round £24.

Some new services are now being run from St Pancras international to Cambridge but many of these services include changing trains at Kings Cross and they are slightly more costly than the others.

Bus

Would you prefer to travel by bus to Cambridge choosing one of the National Express coaches that operates from london to Cambridge might be a good idea. Tickets cost between £4.70 and £17.59 each way depending on if you buy your tickets in advance or last minute. The buses for the higher price usually involve a change at stansted station which could be good if you are flying out directly, if this is not in your itinerary it would be a better choice to take the direct bus for £4,70 each way.

The national express coaches accepts PayPal payments which makes it easy to book a bus ticket from anywhere. The trip takes around 1 hour 45 minutes up to 2 hours 20 minutes between Victoria coach station and Cambridge city centre.

   

Car

If you are reaching Cambridge by car you need to hit the M11 motorway and drive northeast if london for 63 miles. The entire drive should take about 1 hour and 45 minutes depending on traffic, which is usually quite bad on this highway. The best choice would probably be to take either the train or bus.

Parking in Cambridge is quite easy to find with a few different options to choose from.

Norfolk Street

This on-street parking costs you  £0.50 for a half hour with a maximum two-hour stay. This is a great option for the Burleigh and Fitzroy Street area.

Pound Hill

There aren’t many on-street parking spots here, but it is an affordable option north of the city centre. It costs £0.50 for a half hour with a maximum two-hour stay.

There is also free parking in the evenings on Chesterton Road and Glisson Road

Southeast Asia, the name spells out the charm of a tropical landscape, vibrant versatility, and romantic getaways that you can ever think of. From playing a significant part in history, the region of Southeast Asia is everything and more than you have read in any travel or history books. I have previously shared a guide on the best way to see Thailand in 3 weeks, or unmissable experiences in Phuket, to reasons why you will love Bangkok.

We started out exploring with Beijing but depending on where you are flying from, you can also start with Thailand or Cambodia. Below is also a quick glance at the 3-week itinerary of Southeast Asia.

I am sure backpacking Southeast Asia in 3 weeks is on many people’s bucket list below is a quick glance at the how to spend 3 weeks in Southeast Asia visiting China for quick exploring before embarking on Cambodia, Thailand with the possibility of extending to Vietnam.

Below is a detailed guide for how to do Southeast Asia itinerary in 3 weeks.

 

WEEK 1 Beijing & Siem Reap

 

Day 1-2 in Beijing

The 3 weeks in Asia kicks off with Beijing. Getting to Beijing is easier than you think since it has access via air from airports across the world like that of Amsterdam, Chicago, London, Delhi, etc. We had flown in from Budapest but have just easily done this is from London.

Since the next stop is Cambodia after Beijing, you can apply for 72-Hour visa exemption at the Beijing Capital Airport. Using this free visa, you can travel through Beijing and visit the local sights. However, this 72-Hour visa exemption will be applicable to the people from selected countries only. So, make sure that you read my post for additional details as you apply for the visa to Beijing and even as you purchase the next ticket to Cambodia. This gives you around two days and a half in Beijing, which will allow you to travel through top tourist attractions in Beijing. 

 

The Forbidden City and Imperial Palace: The first destination to explore on foot has to be the sprawling and mystifying palace that has been around since the illustrious Ming dynasty. There plenty of tours in Beijing to help you make the most of your time. Of course, the actual palace had been burnt and then in the 18th century, it was built back to its present glory.

One thing that you will find is its impressive facade and glamour complete with interesting murals and artistic decor everywhere you see. The absence of the trees in the main central courtyard will be revealed before you the actual dimensions of the palace. Many gates have nine gilded and very ornately decorated doors.

The names that these gates and halls have like the Gate of Divine Prowess, the Meridian Gate, are sure to inspire you in some way or the other. The Five marble bridges and the highly decorated gold throne of the Imperial Palace are all things to take snaps and stows away in your memory.

From here, visiting yet another marvel is The Great Wall of China. However, as you travel to the historic spot, you can have a platter of the famous dumplings or Peking Roast Duck. There are scores of malls and markets within the city that you might drop in to have a grand time shopping.

The Great Wall of China: It is an architectural wonder and the only manmade monument that is visible to space. This is truly something and when you visit it, the wall is going to astound you. Of course, you cannot walk the entire length, but you can surely visit a portion of the wall that passes through the north of Beijing city. The wall gets names to the places it passes through, and so you can visit one of the sections like Badaling Great Wall, Mutianyu Great Wall, Simatai Great Wall that passes through Beijing. The opening times of these sections through the wall are different, and so it is better to get a  tour to Great Wall or a local guidebook or the tour operators for a drive to these sections of the wall.

 

One of the Zhou dynasty’s dukes between 770 and 221BC commissioned the wall. Then the actual work and the Great Wall that we see today came up during the Ming dynasty. Through the length from the wall, there are watchtowers and fortresses to ensure that the earlier monarchs kept an eye open for the advancing enemies.

A captivating visual treat is this visit to the Great Wall. The entry is closed for the evening, and so you must not make a plan to visit it very late in the evening.

Tian’anmen Square: The “Gate of Heavenly Peace” or Tian’anmen Square is one of the highlights of Beijing city. As a city center, Tian’anmen Square played a major role throughout the Chinese history. This is one of the largest squares of its kind throughout the world for the biggest rallies and parades. The Gate of Heavenly Peace of Tian’anmen Square gate is on one side, and the Great Hall of the People on the other side makes it a stunning place to visit at sunset. You can see the hoisting of the Chinese flag in the morning and the lowering of it in the evening completely in a ceremonial way.

As you wrap up your stay in Beijing, try to visit one of the many markets in Beijing like Panjiayuan Flea Market, Hongqiao Pearl Market and more to shop for everything from superior bags, fashionable clothes, and other accessories. After all of these, you can get ready for your next Southeast Asian destination of Cambodia.

Day 3-7 In Cambodia

 

The country of Cambodia is located in Southeast Asia, and it is a peninsula, which has Laos on one side, Thailand on the other and Vietnam on the third side. The Khmer Dynasty ruled over the country for over 600 years during which the country had developed culturally and otherwise. It saw the influx of two very popular religions Hinduism and Buddhism leading to the rise of many majestic temples that you must certainly make a point to visit.

 

Day 3 and Day 4 Sihanoukville: Sihanoukville in the north has a plethora of beaches, and if you cannot do without your dose of beaches, then this is where you can stay and start with first. There are many beaches in this strip like the Koh Pos. There is a small bridge leading you from the mainland to the Koh Pos where you can simply relax by the beach or visit one of the shacks and dive in some of the fantastic seafood like Fish Amok, Kampot Pepper Crab, or other delicacies like Khmer Red Curry, or Nom Banh Chok in its genuine form.

Among the beaches, Cambodia will not disappoint and here in the Sihanoukville area itself, you can find Victory Beach, The Serendipity Beach, Ochheuteal Beach, and other such beaches.

Day 5 -7  Siem Reap: Your 3 weeks in SE Asia is incomplete without a visit to Siem Reap. Besides the beaches and the abundance of it, there are other attractions like the Angkor Wat temples. Head off to Siem Reap by air or by road as per your wish and time. Siem Reap has a great concentration of temples that have Hindu roots and even strains of earliest Buddhist art and architecture flowing around.

Angkor Wat temples in Cambodia are an attraction and is one of the iconic symbols of Cambodia in any tour guidebook. The Angkor Wat temples are one-of-a-kind and nothing left in the world like these in Cambodia. The Ta Prohm temple in Siem Reap is among the most famous temples as it was featured in the Tomb Raider movie. The temple submerged in the tight embrace of trees within a forest is what adds to the beauty of this temple.

Last but not the least, the Preah Khan temple is another important place that you might wish to visit whose architectural genius will stay with you for a lifetime. WEEK 2 – Thailand, Bangkok, Phuket

Day 8-11 Bangkok: Now that you have had your fill of the mystic land of Cambodia, get ready to enjoy more of it,  and embrace the stark diversity as you enter Thailand. While Cambodia has, a charm of its own, Thailand is more boisterous as a tourist spot, and it does not disguise its intentions at any cost.

So, the first stop in Thailand will be in the bright and welcoming capital of Bangkok. Here you can spend at least 2 days. The city has gained fame for its beach resorts, and the massage and Thai spas that everyone in the world knows about. You too can start your trip on a refreshing note by signing up for a spa here. I have shared a guide on the best areas to stay in Bangkok to make the process of finding a place easy. If you do stay in Bangkok longer, I highly recommend considering Airbnbs in Bangkok. Then you can proceed with your sightseeing trip in Bangkok.

The golden temple dome of Wat Arun must definitely be on your trip. Stop by and find yourself drawn to this magnificent shimmery gold temple located by the Chao Phraya river.

If it is not yet noon, then you can surely visit the Grand Palace and even stop by to pray and be more mesmerized by the Emerald Buddha temple. Now that the day is coming to an end, a trip to the most beautiful Bangkok Ocean World will reveal before you the best marine life that thrives in these parts.

Begin the next day with a trip to the Wat Pho temple, where you can find a golden statue of reclining Buddha. This is a must-visit on your trip here.

The next must-go to destination is the Floating market, at the Khlong Lat Mayom, or the Bang Khu or various other places. You can try one of their local fruit juices or simply hang around to experience. There are plenty of tours from Bangkok to the floating market I recommend leaving early!

WEEK 3 – Phuket, and Krabi

Day 12-16 Phuket

 

One of the best aspects of visiting Phuket is you will find that you cannot help but relax. You can enjoy the city in four days, with a couple or more days devoted to experiencing the beaches that dot this mountainous island.

You can start for the Patong city and spend time going for one or the other water sports like snorkeling, surfing or even going for parasailing. Then proceed to have lunch at one of the many shack restaurants before heading out to the famous James Bond Island. The stunning rocky cliff emerging out of the waters and more of beautiful shoreline will wow you here.

From here if you go to Patong City, then do not forget to stroll through the bright Soi Bangla road where you can get the best of pubs, bars, cabarets and everything in between. You can even spend a day exploring the Portuguese homes of the Old Town part from the city.

The next morning you can start on a visit to the Phang Nga Bay where the limestone cliffs and romantic rocky caves abound in the rainforest area. Then move on to Koh-Phi or the Phi-Phi Islands. This is a gorgeous island, and it is surrealistically beautiful. Spending a day or more in one of these many islands should ideally be on your wish list.

Day 17-21  Krabi Islands: Do not hesitate to spend at least four days here they say, and you can get here from Phuket via the speedboat. You can directly come to the Krabi islands from the Phi Phi islands. Krabi islands are perhaps one of those places that is a complete package when it comes to offering the most attractive destinations.

The places include Railay Island, Phai or Bamboo Island, where you can have a grand time sailing or even exploring the forests. Do not miss on the Emerald Pool and then visit the Buddhist temple or Tiger Cave for you to do some soul-searching.

Alternative South East Asia Itinerary

Vietnam: After a visit to Thailand, and soaking in the sights and sounds of Thai beaches, you shall now find more variety in Vietnam. Vietnam offers nature lover plenty of unique sights. There are interesting places to visit like Halong Bay and take to the many amazing Halong Bay cruises the place is famous for.

You can spend a day here, exploring many caves and dense forests along the beach that overlooks one of the best beaches in these parts. Nha Trang is another grandly picturesque spot that you must not miss. Besides the beaches, there are mountains and plenty of tourist attractions to entertain you for those wishing to explore for longer.

After the beaches, you can check out the urbanized region of Hanoi. Here, you can come across the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, and the Mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh will take you to the pre-independence era. A day trip to Ho Chi Minh City will be a great option for you to check out the World War memorials and explore the local markets and nightlife that set a pace with the city. Planning Your Trip To Thailand

  • Flights: I highly recommend arriving in Bangkok than Phuket to save you on too many connections unless you are already in Asia. We live in London so we explored Cambodia, China before arriving in Thailand. We could just have easily got flights from London to Bangkok. You can find most major airlines on Expedia flying from major cities into Thailand. Also once you are in Thailand, Air Asia had stupidly cheap flights from Bangkok to Phuket too.

 

 

  • Tours: I have shared tips on amazing tours in Bangkok that won’t break the bank and a great way to maximise your Bangkok itinerary.
  • Food: Gastronomy in Thailand is out of this world! Food alone is also a great reason to visit. From street food to amazing restaurants.

 

  • Transport: Getting around Bangkok is super easy as there are plenty of transportation options. Trains, tuk-tuks and taxis. Thus a word of warning though, also make sure you check or negotiate the price on the tuk-tuk before getting on. The same for the taxi or insist on the drive using the meter to avoid being taken for a ride! No pun intended. 🙂

 

  • Budget: When it comes to budget this is a difficult one to one to estimate as my style of travel or type of hotels may not be the same hence the variety of options on the blog to help you travel within your means and budget. Food is cheap, transport is cheap, services are cheap, hotels are plenty from budget to luxe with plenty of options for cool Airbnbs in Bangkok if you want a home from home feel.

Thailand Itinerary For Bangkok And Phuket

While Bangkok and Phuket are the main focus you cannot head to Phuket without exploring the Phi Phi islands. With that in mind I have also included excursions to make this a Bangkok Phuket and  Phi Phi itinerary/.

 

DAY 1 Bangkok

Day 1 in Bangkok would be all about exploring the temples and other historical monuments here. Bangkok has a lot of temples because it is a predominantly Buddhist country. When visiting temples, make sure to dress appropriately, that is, covering your body adequately. Many places may not permit you if inappropriately dressed. 

 

Chao Phraya River Cruise

Chao Phrya River is the river that flows from the mid of Bangkok. Most people prefer having a dinner cruise for Chao Phrya River but for this itinerary, the best time for this river cruise would be early morning or afternoon.

 

Chao Phrya River cruise would allow you to witness sky-scraping towers of Bangkok with the crisp early morning orange sun rays shining upon them.

Also, since Bangkok can get pretty hot and humid during the day, in the morning the weather would be pleasant enough for you to cruise the river.

 

Your Chao Phrya river cruise would start from Sathorn Pier. You can either hire private tours or take ferries just like the majority of the public. Along the bank of the river, you would find a lot of chic restaurants, wooded houses, and temples.

You can grab something to eat from any of the stalls or have breakfast prior to cruising in any of the restaurants near Sathorn Pier.

Or, after the cruise, you could treat yourself to some royalty at Michelin starred restaurant Blue Elephant that has franchises all over the world, promoting exquisite Thai cuisine with a colonial façade.

Grand Palace

Bangkok’s Grand Palace surely lives up to its name since the palace complex consists of about 100 buildings. It was constructed in 1782 and served as a royal residence in the past.

Now, the royals use it for special ceremonies only and it is available for public tours most of the time (from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm) for 500 baht.

 

Grand palace and the buildings inside it are built as per traditional Thai architecture techniques, decorated with gold and diamonds. The palace’s center is the temple of Emerald Buddha I.e.

 

Wat Phra Kaeu, which holds significant importance in Buddhism community and Buddhists from all over the world visit the temple to pay their respects to the Emerald Buddha.

Wat Pho

When you are done exploring the grand palace, hire a ferry or simply walk towards Wat Pho – the temple of reclining Buddha since it is at a distance of ten minutes.

In this temple you will see the enormous (15m tall and 46m long) reclining Buddha plated with gold and ornamented with jewels, lying in the nirvana position.

 

Wat Pho is also the official school for teaching authentic Thai massage and Thai medicine. And when in Thailand, it is a must to get the relaxing Thai massage and there is no better place than this to get it.

Wat Pho is open every day from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm and the ticket costs 300 baht. If you feel hungry by now, there is a small eatery near Wat Pho, The Sixth, serving delicious Thai dishes. There are plenty of tours for Wat Pho that combine ferry, guide and other additions.

 

Wat Arun

Now take a ferry to visit Wat Arun, the temple of Dawn. This temple would leave you in awe; there is a majestic Khmer style tower in the center that has stairs.

Climb the stairs to reach the top and get a striking view of the city from up there. Visiting hours are 8.30 am to 6.00 pm and the ticket price is 100 baht.

Chinatown

The best way to spend your first night in Bangkok is roaming the streets of Chinatown. Located on the opposite side of Wat Arun, across the river, this place essentially wakes up when the sun sets down.

It is also one of the oldest areas in Bangkok, which means you will see old temples, buildings, markets, Cantonese style houses and narrow streets lined with stalls.

 

Chinatown is filled with upscale chic eateries as well as small stalls that serve delicious authentic Thai food. Some very famous food options are curry at Jek Pui Curry, Crab noodle soup at Odean, oyster omelet at Nai Mong Hoi Thod, duck noodle soup at Nai Mao Duck Noodle and traditional Thai desserts at Sweet Time. If you are in a mood for a drink or two, visit the rooftop bar of Sky View 360° Restaurant.

DAY 2 Bangkok

The second day in Bangkok would be all about shopping since there are a lot of markets and shopping malls in Bangkok.

 

Chatuchak Weekend Market

Chatuchak weekend market is the biggest market in the world and there is literally nothing that you cannot find here. With that said, also know that it is very easy to get intimidated by this place because it is huge, always crowded and hot and humid most of the time.

 

It is open on Saturdays and Sundays only. Head to this place as soon as you wake up. It is divided into 27 sections. The art section has great paintings and ornaments made by locals which would make great souvenirs.

There are many restaurants and food stalls in case you get hungry. However, don’t forget to try the infamous coconut ice-cream, Spanish paella and of course, Pad Thai.

Siam

If Chatuchak becomes too hot and crowded for you to handle, or you are not in Bangkok for the weekend, you can opt to go to Siam instead. Siam is the shopping hub of Bangkok.

Apart from having air-conditioned shops, local and international brands, restaurants and spas, each mall has a unique element of its own.

 

Siam Paragon shopping mall has South-east Asia’s largest aquarium, Central World has an ice-skating rink, Siam Center has televisions to display how an outfit would look on you without even wearing it, Siam Discovery has Madame Tussauds Wax Museum.

 

Near Siam Square, you will find Jim Thompson’s house, an American who significantly promoted Thai silk trade. His house is converted into a museum; there are a souvenir shop and a nice restaurant as well. 200 baht entry ticket also includes a Thai traditional dance performance in addition to the guide of the monument.

Asiatique Market

Bangkok has a lot of night exclusive-markets. Asiatique is a relatively new market that starts from 4pm until 12 am.

Here you will find souvenir items since this market was constructed to target tourists. There are many restaurants and pubs as well; and also, a Paris Wheel.

 

Bar With A View – Mahanakhon Bangkok SkyBar

Bangkok has an amazing nightlife option from nightclubs, bars, and restaurants with not only an amazing view but great food too.

DAY 3 Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Floating markets are very common in Southeast Asia, and there are many in Bangkok. Visit Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in the morning and start your day with the vibrant meals that vendors make while paddling the boat.

You should also try the exotic Asian fruits and vegetable, which you might have not seen before. Boats’ fare can range from 200 to 800 baht.

 

Lumphini Park

Lumphini Park is Bangkok’s biggest and greenest park. It is swamped by locals as well as tourists; to make the most out of this serene place amidst the metropolitan. Take a stroll over here in order to relax and unwind a bit.

Wat Saket

At 10 minutes’ drive, the Golden Mountain temple is located. It is named so because of its location, which is on top of a mall hill and you need to climb 344 steps.

On the way up to the temple, you would find small statues of smiling Buddhas and big bells. When you reach the top, you will be mesmerized by the view up there. Near Wat Saket, there is a restaurant called Thip Samai which quite famous for its Pad Thai.

 

Vertigo-Banyan Tree Hotel

Your last night in Bangkok calls for a rooftop drink. Vertigo and Moon bar is located on the 61st floor of Banyan Tree Hotel. Apart from world-class champagne, the place restaurant offers exquisite seafood items as well.

DAY 4 Phuket

Take a morning flight from Bangkok and spend your first day exploring Phuket and its culture. If you happen to start with Phuket but layover in Bangkok, check out my guide on things to do at Bangkok Airport.

 

Bang Tao Beach

Phuket is known for its beaches and resorts. Bang Tao Beach is one of the biggest beaches in Phuket. The water is pristine and the sand is clean.

The best part is, this beach is less crowded and quieter as compared to other beaches in Phuket. Hence, have your perfect sea-side morning on this beach. There are a few top-notch restaurants and resorts over here as well.

Old Phuket Town

Old Phuket Town has a rustic charm to it; you will love strolling down the colorful streets that are full of life and speak of Thailand’s vibrant culture. Thalang Road is lined with houses and shops from the 18th century, built-in colonial-Portuguese style.

You will find many art stores, coffee shops, and handicraft stores in Phuket old town. Bohemian Arthouse is a small and cozy café cum art gallery cum bookstore. Tu Kab Khao is a restaurant that has a Victorian façade and offers Southern Thai cuisine.

Siam Niramit

Siam Niramit is a Thai cultural performance; the show is 80 minutes long and consists of intricate sets, heavily-costumed actors and animals; that depicts Thailand’s traditional culture with reference to history.

You can also opt for the pre-shoe buffet; which has an extensive menu consisting of local and international cuisines. Tickets prices start from 1200 baht.

DAY 5 Phuket

Day 2 is all about adventures in Phuket. I have talked about unmissable experiences in Phuket here but below is additional inspiration and if you want to dedicate at least 5 days to Phuket alone then I have the perfect Phuket itinerary.

 

Phuket Freshwater Fishing Park

Phuket Freshwater Fishing Park has pretty big fishes in its waters and doesn’t matter if you have no experience with fishing, the staff would be more than happy to guide you and give you tips and tricks for catching an enormous fish. There is an on-site restaurant as well.

 

Flying Hanuman

If you are an adventure junkie, you would love zip-lining through the dense jungles of Phuket. Flying Hanuman offers various zip-lining packages, they are super popular with tourists so visit their website to have more information.

 

Windmill viewpoint

Nothing better than watching the sunset quietly on the island’s shore. Windmill viewpoint is a lesser-visited viewpoint which means you get to witness the sunset on Andaman sea in full romantic mode.

Pa Tong

Head to Pa Tong beach to have dinner at any of the chic restaurants that line it and you can spend your night there chilling at the beach.

You can take a stroll on the Bangla road which is famous for its nightlife. There are nightclubs and outdoor bars to enjoy the night with a drink or two.

DAY 6 Phuket 

Visit the famous tourist spots in Phuket on day 3. If you are visiting Phuket for a honeymoon of looking for inspiration on the perfect couples guide to Phuket.

 

Bang Pae waterfall

Bang Pae waterfall is the largest waterfall in Phuket island. Going to this waterfall early in the morning can give you some freshness by acquiescing yourself to the mother nature. You can dip in the water; it is cold and clean and there are fish inside.

 

Upside-down House

Baan Teelanka is a major tourist attraction in Phuket island. It is a three-story house in which the furniture is installed upside down.

You might feel a bit dizzy but this place is a must if you want cool Instagram pictures. The entrance in the house costs 340 baht. There is a mall, central festival, at 8 minutes’ drive. You can go there to grab something to eat in the food court or for some retail therapy.

Big Buddha

Big Buddha statue is located on top of Nakkerd Hills, so you can hire an ACV bike to reach the statue. Later, you can head to Nakkerd sea-view restaurant which offers good food at affordable rates.

 

Chalong Bay Distillery

This place produces quality rum from 100% sugarcane using traditional techniques. You can join a tour to explore the place or take part in cocktail classes.

 

Monkey Hill

You might feel heavy after gulping down all the rum so why not burn it off by going to the monkey hill. You will find many monkeys who are used to getting fed. But be vigilant of your stuff as monkeys can take your belongings away in the blink of an eye.

Nam Yoi restaurant is located near the monkey hill which offers delicious Southern Thai food. Try their famous tom yum soup with seabass for dinner.

DAY 7 – Phi Phi Islands Day Trip From Phuket

At Rassada Pier, ferries are available for traveling to Phi Phi islands. Reach there early in the morning to spend the whole day on this archipelago. There are a lot of things you can do in a one-day Phi Phi excursion:

• Have a dip in the clean waters of Pileh Bay Lagoon. Pileh Bay’s sandy beach is also an attraction to just lay down and soak in the sun.

• Hike to the Phi Phi viewpoint which offers stunning views of the island.

• Diving is one of the most popular activities on Phi Phi islands. King Cruiser wreck and shark point are two famous diving points.

• Kayaking is another water sport, offered at Tonsai beach and Loh Dalam Bay.

• Stroll around Tonsai village, you will find restaurants, souvenir shops, art galleries, and tattoo parlors.

• Spend your night partying on the beach-side open-air bars like Slinky Bar and Apache Beach Bar.

You can either book your own private boat or book a tour the day before so that they can pick you up from your hotel early in the morning. I shared tips on out tours to Phi Phi Islands as well as Phang Nga Bay for James Bond Island.

How To Travel From Phuket To Bangkok – Flight Bus Car

Below are some tips on how to get to Phuket from Bangkok with journey duration times. I also recommend use the Omio website as that will give you information on one page with different modes of transportation, costs, duration provided by various airlines, bus and taxi options.

 

Bangkok to Phuket distance: 844Km

Bangkok to Phuket via train: There is currently no option for a train from Bangkok to Phuket.

Bangkok to Phuket via bus: Note that this is a long trip! The Bangkok to Phuket bus fare is £29.68 and the journey is 14 hours! For that price I would recommend you just fly as the price for the bus and flight are not too far off. It is cheaper to fly to Phuket from Bangkok as you can easily get flights from £20.

Bangkok to Phuket by plane: You can easily fly from Bangkok to Phuket and the flights are only 1 hour and 20 minutes. Flight fare prices are from around £20 and you can find airlines like NokAir, ThaiVietAir, Air Asia and more flying that route on Omio or Expedia.

Bangkok to Phuket via ferry: There is currently no option for this as the two are on opposite sides of Thailand coastlines.

How Many Days In Bangkok and Phuket Is Enough?

So, how many days in Bangkok and Phuket is enough? Well if you consider that a flight from London is some 15 hours when you arrive, you will likely be tired and possibly jetlagged.

At a minimum, you will need at least 2 days for Bangkok and a day trip or tour just outside Bangkok to markets and other nearby temples on the outskirts.

 

Then, there is Phuket, from Bangkok its only 1 hour 2o minutes so easy to get to by plane. As far as how long you stay, I would recommend at least for days minimum.

Why? You will need a full day for the Phi Phi island tour, a day for the Phang Nga tour and then the other two days are for exploring the markets and Old Town of Phuket and then Patong and beaches.

I would say ideally best to do two weeks in Thailand and if possible extend to 3 and for inspiration see my post on 3 weeks in Thailand.

Day 1 In Athens  – Things To Do

9:00 AM Propylaia

While touring in Acropolis, one of the first places to visit in Athens in 2 days is the first magnificent gate structure that you will come across. A man named Mnesikles was the architect of this project, which started in the year 437 BCE, but was unfortunately left unfinished. The reason behind its incompleteness is the Peloponnesian war that raged 5 years after its construction.

The structure was almost complete except for some final changes. Some theorists believe that the structure could not be completed due to saving resources for the war. To quote one traveler, “It is the only way to describe the grand entrance to one of the most brilliant locations on our planet.”

9:15 AM Parthenon

Parthenon is a temple at Acropolis built 2500 years ago in honor of the Greek Goddess Athena. You cannot afford to miss this site. It is among the top must-see in Athens in 2 days.

9:30 AM Temple of Athena Nike

This is another major temple dedicated to Goddess Athena. However, the uniqueness of this temple is, the idol of Athena is displayed as victorious in the war. The Greek word “Nike” actually translates into “victory.” It stands on the edge of a high cliff and is placed at the southwest corner of Acropolis. It is the smallest temple in Acropolis constructed by Kallikrates, the same man who constructed the majestic Parthenon.

The construction of the temple was finished by 420 BCE. On the southern wall, you can see the sculpture of Greeks fighting with the Persians, and on the other side, you can find Greeks fighting with other warriors. As you climb up the wall, you can see several poses of Athena, most notably being a pose where Nike is seen to adjust her sandal. The interior designs are relief and charming.

10:30 AM Theater of Dionysus

If you are wondering about the first theater in the world, this is it! The Theater of Dionysus is located at the foot of Acropolis, where you can sit on the steps and admire like the audience. Another one on of those cool places not to much on the things to do in Athens in 2 days.

11:00 AM Areopagus or Mars Hill

This is a sweet spot to view the whole length and breadth of the majestic Athens. At this spot, Apostle Paul had given a sermon

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of Heaven and Earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.”

This was some historical fact to cater to your curiosity!

11:15 AM Plaka

In the Plaka neighborhood, you will find a plethora of restaurants, bars, and cafes. You can have Greek salads with baklava and delicious Greek yogurt with honey. For tips on what to eat see this cool Athens food guide. This place is definitely must see in Athens in 2 days.

1:15 PM Temple of Zeus

Out of 104 columns, only 16 of them are present. 2 columns are present in the southwest corner and the other 13 in the southeast. Here, one column will be seen to have fallen, which has a history behind it. Due to a major earthquake in the 19th century, one of the columns toppled. The temple is around 2500 years old! It is also known by the other name, “Olympieion.” The architect responsible for its architecture is Roman emperor Hadrian. Although the kind of Syria started the work in 174 BCE, his death resulted in a halt. Hadrian, the great Philhellene, completed the magnificence. It is the largest temple in the city and one of the greatest temples ever built in ancient history.

2:30 PM Hadrian’s Arch

The Roman emperor Hadrian constructed the Arch in 131 AD. It was constructed as a wall separating new Athens from the old. It is located in the south of the National Gardens at the entrance of Temple of Olympian Zeus at Amallias Avenue. On the side of the arch, you will find these words

“This is Athens, the former city of Theseus.” The other side not facing Acropolis reads

“This is the city of Hadrian and not of Theseus.” It is a 59 ft gate made of marble.

 

Pro tip: When you come down from the Acropolis you will notice plenty of restaurants you can take your pick and grab a quick bite and hate out to the next stop on the Athens itinerary.

 

 

 

4:00 PM Athens National Gardens

If you want a welcome respite of calmness from the noisy crowds that you have will no doubt have encountered in Acropolis, walk past the Parliament building. You can take a stroll here at the beautiful green gardens, which exit to the Panathenaic stadium. It is located at a stone’s throw from Syntagma metro station. The garden has a glorious history behind it. It was named as “The garden of Amalia.”

Amalia was a queen who was the wife of King Otto. She is said to have spent at least 3 hours a day taking care of the garden! When you enter the garden from one of the seven entrances, Vasilissis Amalias Avenue entrance, a 25-meter high Washingtonia Palm trees will steal your attention. The royal highness herself planted the majestic trees! The garden has around 7000 trees, 40000 bushes, and other plants of 519 species. Catering to your enjoyment, the place also has a children’s library along with a cafe.

5:00 PM Syntagma Square

Syntagma square is the heart of Athens. It is Greek for Constitution Square. The first Royal modern Greek king, Otto, in the year 1843, christened the place. Here, you can witness the ceremonial changing of Guards, which is a necessary watch ritual. They perform at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. On Sundays, you can see them wearing a traditional Greek war outfit from the 1821 era. On weekdays, you can observe their normal modern attire. The uniqueness of these soldiers lies in the fact that they remain stationary for 1 hour. After every 1 hour, they change their positions.

 

6:00 PM Panathenaic Stadium

It was here at this stadium where the first modern Olympics took place in the 19th century. It is also known as Kallimarmaro. It is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. Having been excavated in the year 1869, the surprising part is, the marble structure is still standing even after a big 2000 years! Though some modifications have been made, it is clear enough to see how it stood the test of time.

Day 2 In Athens – Places To Visit

9:00 AM Monastiraki Market

There are many things to do in Athens in 2 days! If you are asking yourself what to do in Athens in 2 days, you can start your Day 2 by exploring Monastiraki Market. Whichever side you turn, you will find a plethora of markets and shopping centers. Even if you are not buying anything from here, it is recommended to explore this unique place still and maybe even pick up a Greek souvenir or two.

In Monastiraki square, you will find Athens flee market where you find splendid souvenirs and outdated electronics. While making your way inside the flea market, you will come across Ancient Agora. This place may seem peaceful now, but historically, it was a busy commercial place with bustling people gossiping and shopping around. Historically speaking, the Ancient Agora was a place for political gatherings, and Roman Agora located on the eastern side was a marketplace.

You can easily access Roman Agora from the Ancient Agora towards the east side or walk 2 minutes from the Monastiraki metro station. The Roman Agora was constructed with the funds of Augustus and Julius Caesar in around the first century BC.

1:00 PM Adrian’s Library

Located in the northern corner of the Roman Agora, the library of Adrian houses not only books but also legal state archives. It is the largest library in all of Athens. It was constructed in 132 BCE by Roman emperor Hadrian as a plan for rebuilding the city. Admission to this site can be granted with a 30 EUR Acropolis combo ticket permitting entry to this one and five other sites. The library is built in an area of 10000 sq. km.

 

3:00 PM Temple of Hephaestus

Located just above the Ancient Agora, this temple has its awe. It is, in fact, the best-preserved ancient temple in the whole of Greece. This temple is dedicated mainly to Hephaestus, the God of Fire. Talented Iktinus, who also contributed to Parthenon, designed it in 450 BC. Its sculptures were made up of Parian marble while its structure was from Pentelic marble. Reconstruction and excavations at this historical site are still carried out to preserve the beautiful History.

 

4:00 PM Adrianou Street

Being one of the oldest commercial streets in Athens, Adrianou street is unlike any street in your country. Here, people from other countries in the world take a stroll and relax. The street has a wide range of shops and stalls. In case you feel hungry and tired, try grabbing a delicious coffee!

5:00 PM National Archaeological Museum

The National Archaeological Museum in Athens is the largest in all of Greece and is considered one of the most important museums devoted to Greek history. It was founded in the year 1829 after a revolutionary struggle between Ottoman and the Greeks. You can find more than a whopping number of 11000 exhibits here, ranging from the prehistoric era to late antiquity.

It will cost you around 10 EUR to explore it. One of the most prominent artifacts to be displayed here is the Antikythera Mechanism. It is believed to be the world’s first computer and was lying under the sea for more than 2000 years! One notable artifact is the Mask of Agamemnon, which is a golden death mask. It is believed to cover the face of a dead person.

Getting Around In Athens

The best way to get around Athens is by walking! You can get a great vibe from the city by exploring on foot. The entire Acropolis, as an archaeological site, has great sight watching to offer. The area can be explored on foot without any requirement of transportation. For getting around the city, the metro is the quickest and the efficient way. It is easier to travel around Athens in metros than in Paris! Syntagma station at the heart of Athens will not only be convenient for you but also a wonder.

The station is a display of wonderful artifacts and antiquities! Unfortunately, the bus in Athens as transport is not convenient, as the bus tops may seem hidden and difficult to find without the help of locals. Although the transportation system has improved since the 2004 Olympics, there is still room for improvement. Instead of the bus, you can take a ride in trolleys and trams, both of which are very affordable. In 2018, even though Uber has been suspended in Greece, taxis are available 24/7.

Best Time to Visit Athens

The months of July and August can see a temperature spike of more than 40 degrees Celsius. Instead of dropping a visit in the blazing hot summer, it is best to visit in April and June when the temperatures hover around 20 to 25 degrees. If you want to experience the best sightseeing, November can be your best bet, but you will need to be prepared for cold nights and heavy rains.

Two days is a short time in it comes to exploring the beautiful city of Venice but it is a start. Below, I am sharing tips on must-see in Venice Italy in 2 days with some tips (and tricks) on how to arrive in Venice in style, getting around in Venice and many more as you read on.

There are plenty of things to do in Venice; museums, going for bacari, gondola rides, Vaporetto tours for a unique holiday and a unique opportunity. While Venice isn’t as big, all the cool things to do in Venice are all closely fused today around the Grand Canal and inter-connect by over 300 bridges! Yes, even with the perfect guide of a 2 day Venice itinerary, its impossible to see it all. 

Venice is very much an open-air museum, there are many things to see and do around every turn. If you are short in time I highly recommend taking advantage of the many amazing tours in Venice to maximise your time and visit to Venice. From food tours, Gondola rides, skip the line museum tickets and many more.

What to do and see in two days in Venice?

If you are visiting Venice as part of a day trip and like to additional tips on how to spend a day in Venice then also read my one day guide. To make the most of the 2 days in Venice you must organize as much of yourself before arriving and then so that when you arrive you can just get exploring and kick-off to exploring using this  Venice 2 day itinerary.

Make sure you know what area in Venice you want to stay in, figure out how to get from Marco Polo Airport of if coming via Verona, how to get from Verona to Venice by train, car or transfer.

 

Day 1 In Venice – Things To Do

Once you get off the train in Venice Santa Lucia or if you arrived by car or bus to Piazzale Roma (the train and bus stations are divided by the Calatrava bridge) you could start the Venice tour by walking towards San Marco.

Instead of the usual itinerary, we propose a detour to the left to enter the Cannaregio area, where you could visit the Jewish Ghetto (the oldest in Europe), outside the tourist chaos and immersed in a mystical atmosphere (after the Guglie bridge). Do not miss an opportunity to do the food tour in the Jewish Ghetto.

 

In the ghetto, there are 5 synagogues and 1 museum or try as a snack the desserts, especially biscuits, handmade and which respect ancient recipes, such as “le recie de Aman” or “ears of Aman” (bundles made of shortcrust pastry filled with jam, almonds, poppy seeds or chocolate) which are the sweets of the Purìm festival.

Then continue towards the Rialto Bridge, where before the bridge you could find (only in the morning) the Venice fish market to breathe the typical Venetian air and see how the inhabitants locals buy food amidst the “screams” of the traders. If, on the other hand, you are not interested and you are more interested in shopping, the area around Rialto is full of shops with big names and a photo from the top of the bridge with a fantastic view of the Lagoon.

 

From here, a few minutes on foot you will find the beating heart of the city: San Marco square! Here you will find the Clock Tower, the Basilica of San Marco and the Doge’s Palace. This is an unmissable on the list of must-see in Venice Italy in 2 days.

Thousands of tourists arrive in Venice every day and San Marco square could be crowded (especially during big events such as Carnival) and visiting the main attractions could involve long waits, so better to buy an online ticket to Venice tours that would allow you to skip the line and shorten the times a lot and thus avoid the queue.

Grab a quick lunch

Venice in some areas (such as San Marco) is not cheap at all, but with a little wit you could discover places where you pay little and eat well, ideal for those who have little time and want to enjoy a quick lunch.

Alternatively, being in San Marco you could try the famous Hard Rock Cafe (the smallest in Europe) which is right on the edge of it. For connoisseurs and for those who have already been to other places in Europe, you will surely remember that it is one of those places that attracts a lot of people and it is normal practice to wait for the table for some time. To avoid the queue and not waste too much time, you should buy a ticket that includes a meal at the Hard Rock Café with priority seats.

One of the things to see in two days in Venice is one of the most beautiful and important bridges in Venice, Ponte dei Sospiri (bridge of sighs, 1 minute from Piazza San Marco). Legend tells that if two lovers go by gondola under the bridge at sunset, their love will last forever. While in truth it was the sigh of the prisoners who crossed the bridge knowing that it was the last time they saw Venice. To end the tour and walk the last of the bridges that cross the Grand Canal (after Calatrava, Rialto and Accademia) head towards the Santa Croce area (railway station) and you will find the Scalzi bridge: its name is due to the fact that the bridge it overlooks the Church of Santa Maria di Nazareth, where the mass was officiated for many centuries by the order of the barefoot Carmelites.

A tour with the Vaporetto

Once you arrive at the Scalzi bridge and then at the station, from here you could take line 2 from the railway jetty which will allow you at a low cost to take the panoramic tour by boat of Venice (about 60 minutes).

You can buy the ticket at the automatic ticket machines located outside the pier. Otherwise, if you already start with the idea of using the ferry, then book your ticket on the website of the public company ACTV that performs the service.

 

Pro tip: The best way to get around Venice is of course on foot but you will no doubt need to use Vaporettos. For tips read my post on how to get around in Venice.

The aperitif to end the evening

In Venice, the aperitif is a real ritual. If you want to enjoy a spritz or a “shadow”, you will find many bacari and taverns to toast the day just spent between a snack and a glass of wine (we recommend the area around Rialto) but search for a spot in the inner alleys to avoid the crowds.

If you like spritz or wine, but also the thought of putting something in your stomach you don’t mind, try the typical “scartosso”, that is, a foil with fried food, accompanied by a glass of wine or try one of the many typical Venetian Cicchetti (sardines in saor, crostini with cold cuts, meatballs, etc).

You can have dinner in one of the nearby taverns from 15 euros. Take a good second and a drink. Venice is not so expensive.

 

Day 2 In Venice – Places To Visit

Breakfast

Among the various alternatives on where to have breakfast in Venice (for those who do not have time to waste) are to try the pastry shops scattered throughout the city (or the classic bar).

For lovers of more classic Venice and who do not mind the wallet, instead, the advice is to sit at the tables of one of the historic cafes in Piazza San Marco, such as the Caffè Florian, just as the main characters of the history of the Italian and foreign literature and art. If you manage to book a hotel with views of the Grand Canal, likely many of these will offer breakfast with a view!

You cannot say that you have been to Venice if you doing a Gondola ride tour that will accompany you to discover the city from the water, giving you glimpses of the city that you could not see on foot or by Vaporetto.

Lunch In Typical Osteria Or Trattoria

On your second day in Venice, you could once arrived at lunchtime or draw on the ideas of the quick lunch from first day (in places where you eat well and pay little) or choose some nice restaurant like Ristorante da Mario alla Fava.

As an alternative to all this, you could do like the Venetians and go to some typical tavern or trattoria, which perhaps has a fixed menu of the day, which with a dozen euros or a little more will make you try some local specialties (among others,  Sardines in saor or cod).

Fancy a little shopping?

Once you have lunch, before visiting another historical place, one of the things to do in Venice in 2 days is to relax and do some shopping (the shops are open all day). Here it depends a lot on what your tastes are and what you mean by shopping in Venice.

There are those who want to buy the classic souvenir from Venice and those who want to see the windows of the big brands such as Chanel (San Marco area), while among the calli of Venice you could also find some shop that presents handmade objects (Murano glass or bags Leather). I could not resist and have come away from Venice with a couple of leather handbags much to the annoyance of my husband who had to wait for me to decide before buying them all in the end.

Il Paradiso Perduto – Fondamenta della Misericordia 2540

Close to the Jewish Ghetto, this place offers an excellent and vast choice of Cicchetti, from fried foods of all kinds (try the “gran fritoin”, their workhorse!) To meatballs, from “mozzarella in Carrozza” to creamed cod. It is also a trattoria and you can stop for lunch and dinner, however we advise you to book a table or to arrive very early because it is always full. Alternatively, you can eat your fried food sitting on the bank of the Fondamenta as many do. It is open from 11 to 22 and is closed on Tuesday.

1 Day Copenhagen Itinerary Guide

With the city pass in hand, you are ready to begin your day with a Danish breakfast comprising of oatmeal porridge, eggs, salmon, and bread. If you want authentic breakfast, head out to The Grød or the Café Norden in the city center. These are famous ones and open up early by 7.30 on weekdays, and around 9 AM on weekends. To make the most of your one day Copenhagen itinerary, I highly recommend doing a tour in Copenhagen as that also allows you to get your bearings around the city very quickly with the help of a local guide. Also are no great expense.

9.30 AM Little Mermaid

The first among things to do in Copenhagen in 1 day is to visit the most iconic spots here. The Little Mermaid statue is undoubtedly one of these spots and taking a selfie with the forlorn-looking mermaid sitting in the backdrop. This bronze statue, commissioned in 1913, is based on the famous fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson.

Sculptor Edward Eriksen had created this work of art that draws scores of tourists daily at the Larsens Place waterfront to view this statue. Visit this place early in the morning if you don’t want people to photobomb you or fight for the perfect shot. From here, you can head down to Amalienborg Palace.

10.30 AM Amalienborg Palace

As you walk or even drive down to Amalienborg Palace, you cross the tall spires of the Gothic church of St Alban’s. Make sure to reach the Amalienborg Palace by 10.30 AM to get a vantage position with the camera. Every day, the changing of the guards’ ceremony takes place here.

This Amalienborg Palace is one of the four different buildings in one sprawling courtyard. The towering statue of the founder, King Frederick V, looks imposing in this courtyard. The Royal Guards or the Den Kongelige Livgarde guards come from the Rosenborg Castle for this ceremony.

You may take time to explore the other palatial buildings where the other royalty had once lived and ruled over Denmark. The Amalienborg Museum is worth visiting if you want to see how the Danish royalty lived.

If you have the Copenhagen Card, you can get free entry to the palace as well as over 80 other places of interest in the city along with public transportation in the city limits. The ticket price for adults is 95 DKK. For the age group of 0 to 17, the entry is free of cost, and the entry for students is 65 DKK.

Your first destination of the day is at Rosenborg Castle and King’s Gardens. You can get a ticket to combine the visits across the castles at 170 DKK. Take a walk through Christian VII’s palace and lose yourself in the pages of the 1600s. This was Christian IV’s favorite castle, and he was here whenever he felt the need for some relaxation. Frederick III and Frederick VII also stayed here. You can have a look at the crown jewels here in the museum.

12 PM Frederick’s Church or Marble Church

From the courtyard and gardens of the Amalienborg Palace itself, you can see the spire of Frederick’s Church. Located in Frederiksstaden, the Marble Church was made under the supervision of King Frederick V. This was the part of the big plan of naming this entire area as Frederiksstaden in 1749. The church is open all year between 10 AM and 5 PM and on Fridays and Sundays between 12 PM and 5 PM. The striking feature of this church has to be the distinct green dome visible from the Amalienborg Castle and the Opera house.

From this Round Tower, you can go to one of the longest pedestrian streets in entire Europe, Strøget. You get to shop from here or grab a snack from the scores of cafes and restaurants here. First, let’s start with a few things you should know about the capital of Belgium. Brussels is also the political capital of the European Union. It is said to be an international city, because around a million people reside in Brussels, of whom many are from different countries and very few are Belgians. Over time, as various cultures mixed, one of the most multicultural cities in Europe emerged.

You will recognize the multicultural character of the city perhaps mainly in the languages people speak. Official languages in Belgium are Dutch (57%), French (42%) and German (1%). Language is one of the most important facts of life in Brussels and Belgium. Brussels capital region is officially bilingual so all road sides and documents are written in French and Dutch. German is only spoken in the Ardennes area by 1% of the population.

A stately, quiet atmosphere. The lower town of Brussels, the ancient heart of the city, is home to its most famous area, the Grand Place. This is recommended for those looking to stay nearby the city centre and the Gare Centrale area (central station). For many of our trips, we have opted to stay on Louise Avenue as we found access to shops, cafes and easy walking distance to attractions with a stay at Grand Place also being a great option too.

The atmosphere of the streets surrounding the Town Hall is good, mainly touristic. Near the stock market (Bourse), there are two less touristy areas of great interest: Saint Géry square and Sainte Catherine, two areas with the authentic Brussels atmosphere. You will find the most recommended breweries and restaurants of the European capital mixed with a modern atmosphere. Nothing to do with the “butchers” street next to the Grand Place.

If you would rather get familiar with the city and hear some useful information about the main attractions before you venture on your own, book a walking tour, there are also options for free walking tours. Although free, please don’t forget to tip generously. The earliest time at which you can do it is 10am, which would give you enough time to explore all the places during the rest of the day. This 2.5-hour Brussels Free Tour will show you all the top attractions in the old city. Local guides will take you to must-see spots such as iconic Grand Place, the Mannekin Pis and the birthplace of everyone’s favourite comic adventurer, Tintin among many others. 

Of course, whether to go on this tour or not, is entirely up to you. We will list all of the most important attractions in the itinerary below, therefore do not worry about missing them in case you decide to choose the self-guided tour only.

 

 

 

Getting around

When it comes to your visit in Brussels in a day, Brussels has an excellent, fully integrated transit network—Métro, tram, and bus—and the network operates daily 5am to midnight, after which a limited NOCTIS night-bus network takes over until 3am, heading out to the suburbs every 30 minutes.

Maps of the transport system are available free from the city tourist office on Grand-Place. 

Buying your ticket: In the various metro stations and at the STIB information offices at many newsagents. Another way to do your one day sightseeing in Brussels is by exploring the city on foot.

Morning – Start Your List Of Places To Visit Early

Grand Place and the surrounding buildings

The geographical, commercial and historical center of Brussels – real icon of the city and a must see in Brussels in one day. Also one of the busiest places and a square that you will probably encounter again and again when you are touring the city. If you have time, it may be a good idea to visit it in the day and at night, simply because the atmosphere is different here at different times of the day. Pay attention to the buildings that surround the square, and especially the Town Hall, which survived a French attack in 1695, while the rest of the buildings had to be rebuilt.

Another prominent building on the square is the Maison du Roi or La Casa del Rey. This was built in 1536 and, for many years, was the residence of the monarchs. Today it is the Museum of the City, which you are welcome to visit if that’s something that you are interested in.

You can enjoy more than 2,000 beers from around the world. Delirium Café holds the Guinness World Records for the number of beers available for tasting: 2,004 record obtained in 2004. You can choose from the Trappists, famous Belgian Abbay, strong brown beers, fruits or lighter from Belgium and the world. Brussel’s multicultural hot-spot – be it an exhibit, a concert, a screening or any other cultural activity, this is where they will premiere. The Henry Le Bœuf Great Hall (2,200 seats) is a must-see in itself – a beautiful oval concert hall with marvelous acoustics. Not only is the centre well worth seeing but the area is wonderful to roam around, too!

The Magritte Museum is dedicated to showing the works of the famous Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte. Centered in Paris, the surrealist movement began in the 1920s and incorporated an element of surprise and unexpected connections. Known for his humorous and witty images, Magritte challenged the viewer’s perception of reality. He is known for saying, “If the dream is a translation of waking life, waking life is also a translation of the dream.”

 

BELvue Museum

The Atomium – a must-see!

The Atomiun in Brussels is one of the most famous structures in Belgium. Created for the 1958 International EXPO by André Waterkeyn, it is much more than a production of its time – it is futuristic, scientific and maybe even a little bit strange. It stands 102 meters tall, made up of steel spheres. They say it is the unit proportion increased by 165 million of an iron crystal particle. 5 of the spheres are open to the public. Observe the play of light through its windows and marvel at this monument’s grandeur. The cathedral’s treasure lies in the Holy Sacrament, and includes religious masterpieces, such as the Virgin and Child by Teutonic artist Conrad Meit and the painting of The Legend of Saint Gudula, by Michel Coxcie. Another beautiful part of the architecture is the collection of 16th, 17th and 19th century stained glass windows, which depict different religious passages.

The Palace of Justice of Brussels

Or Law Courts of Brussels is the most important court building in Belgium. The size of it is impressive – 160 by 150 meters and a total ground surface of 26,000 m² is located on the high Town of Brussels, the building is visible from most parts of the town. The best views of Brussels are found on Poelaert Square, where the main entrance to the building is located.

Important: it is currently under construction, however, you can still see the beautiful dome and feel the size of the whole building.

Best Time To Visit Tallinn

The best time to visit Tallinn in Estonia is from June until September, when you will have a soft or pleasant temperature and limited until little rainfall.

The highest average temperature in Tallinn is 22°C in July and the lowest is -2°C in January. Our visit was in August but as you can see from the pictures, we pretty overcast. We had a bit of sunshine and then showers hit but it fizzled out a few minutes later.

Getting Around Tallinn

Tallinn is pretty much a large village (when it comes to size), meaning that it doesn’t take too long to get from one place to another.

The best way to move around is to walk, as it also allows you to discover parts of the city that you wouldn’t normally pay attention to if you were on the bus.

 

However, if walking is not for you, or if it’s chilly and rainy outside, there are other ways to reach places.

Buses, trolley-buses and trams, all of which use the same ticketing-system. Trams provide the simplest way to get around downtown areas.

From the centre, most major bus routes leave from the terminal under the Viru Centre, or from Vabaduse väljak (Freedom Square).

When it comes to tickets, the simplest version is the 1-hour ticket which can be bought from the driver for €2.

How To Get To Tallinn

Flight Into Tallinn: I travel from London so this is based on that. There are plenty of flights from London to Tallinn from FinAir, SAS, Turkish Air, and many others. You can check Expedia or Ebookers for slight deals.

 

Ferry From Helsinki To Tallinn: We took the ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn via Direct Ferries. We booked it in advance online. The journey is only 1 hour and 45 minutes.

If you have an EU passport you will breeze through security but if you have a Schengen visa, and better yet have an African passport prepare for a little more scrutiny as many in passport don’t seem familiar African passports.

 

This considering, how we had some rather less than pleasant interaction with not only Finland’s passport control and security the airport, but the passport control at the ferry terminal both leaving and coming back from Russia via Finland.

Other than that, the travel experience in the country wasn’t bad. The ferry from Helsinki to Tallin was 64 Euros for a return for 2 people.

When you arrive at the Tallinn cruise terminal, getting from the terminal to Tallinn city centre, is a short walk into the old town.

 

Ferry From St Petersburg To Tallin: Before visiting Tallinn, we had been to St Petersburg on a short cruise, which also operates an option to do Helsinki to St Petersburg for 3 days and then on to Tallin.

This is operated by St Peter Line. You can book this online as well as gives you the option to visit Russia without a visa.

 

Instead of heading to Tallinn from Russia we got off in Helsinki and explored a few days before heading to visiting Tallinn from Helsinki as detailed above.

We paid 300 Euros for the overnight cruise from Helsinki to St Petersburg without the Tallin option. Prices will depend on the cabin you get and cruise length.

Morning

Old Town and the surroundings

 

Viru Gate

There is no better way to start this route through Tallinn than entering the old city through the Viru Gate. Several of the gates that gave access to the medieval city of Tallinn are still preserved.

But without a doubt, the most beautiful is the Viru Gate. As you walk through the gate, you will likely travel in time.

This gate was part of the fortification that surrounded the city in the 14th century. Tallinn was the most protected city in Europe after the Middle Ages, and some of the 26 towers on the wall can still be seen and visited. The best known are Nuna and Sauna.

 

St. Catherine’s Passage

If you pass through the Viru gate and turn right, in 5 minutes you will encounter of the most special places in the capital. St. Catherine’s Passage is a small cobbled street, almost “secret”, which will make you feel like you’re a part of some sort of fairytale.

Of course, keep in mind that, being small and quite touristy, it may attract some other visitors too, meaning you may not be alone there.

If you want some quiet time there, or a perfect photo, go early in the morning… or in the middle of winter! Along this historic street, you will find also find a plenty of craft shops, which is a perfect if you want to bring home something unique.

Freedom Square (Vabaduse väljak)

At the edge of the Tallinn Old Town, where the old buildings connect with the new ones, proudly stands the Freedom Square, a symbol of liberty.

In the Soviet times, it was known as the Victory Square that used to host parades during the holidays like the Victory Dayand the October Revolution.

Now, it is a popular meeting spot and a place to relax. You can sit on a bench or in a cafe, enjoy the lively atmosphere, visit open-air concerts in the summertime, or have a look at the monuments, art galleries and the churches surrounding the square.

 

Town Hall Square

Whether you visit Tallinn in one day or over a few days, this place is not to be missed. Tallinn’s Town Hall Square is spectacular. It is the heart of the Old Town.

Apart from the obvious town hall, the square is surrounded by beautiful colorful houses of former merchants that add a precious touch to the square.

In fact, since the medieval period, the town hall square has been the main meeting place of the locals. And it continues being one. Sit on one of the terraces to have a drink and simply enjoy the atmosphere.

Börsi käik

On the pavement is a timeline from prehistoric times with important dates and events (in English). The timeline, somewhat optimistically, stretches to the year 2418 and the 500th anniversary of Estonian independence. It’s well worth a detour, and there is a nice museum shops half way down too.

 

Master´s Courtyard

This quiet courtyard in the Old Town is a little piece of Tallinn as it was centuries ago, when people appreciated the work of craftsmen, who put their heart and soul into everything they made.

You can still see the medieval architecture and enjoy the cozy atmosphere. There are different arts and crafts workshops, guest rooms for accommodation, and the famous café Chocolaterie in the yard.

It can be a little tricky to find it. You need to be walking north on Vene street while scanning the walls to your right for a small gateway. Grab a bite to eat, have a drink, relax, and get ready to continue your tour of Tallinn.

If you hadn’t considered a food tour in Tallinn, then perhaps now would be food for food stop. Considered to be a top restaurant in Tallinn, and reasonably priced. Everything on the menu is exquisite.

Servers leave personalized notes on the napkins, butter, and freshly baked bread is brought to the table along with compliments from the chef.

 

The whole experience is an absolute delight. Book a table one week in advance. It will be worth it. The doors open at 12:00 and that’s the only time you might be able to get a table without reservation.

St. Olaf’s Church tower and observation platform

The gothic steeple of this church, which was completed in the early 16th century, once made the church one of the tallest buildings in the world (soaring to 159 metres, according to some sources).

 

Historians disagree, however, on the details and interpretation of the measurements, and some even think that the steeple has never been higher than 115–125 metres. Nevertheless, the church has always been a grand structure, and its 124-metre tower is considered one of the icons of Tallinn.

 

In summer, visitors can climb a winding staircase to the tower’s observation platform to enjoy views of the city. The church and observation platform are closed in winter.

Kadriorg Palace – Best in Summer

Originally built by Tsar Peter the Great as a gift for his beloved Catherine, Catherine showed no interest in the place whatsoever, and today, Kadriorg is used as an art museum, which is open until 6pm on most days, apart from Mondays.

The palace is surrounded by large green areas and flowers, perfect for those looking to relax and enjoy some quiet time.

 

You can get to the palace from the Old Town in about 30-40mins if you walk, or jump on a tram, which will take about 20mins.

For that, you will need to walk to Linnahall station (4mins away from St. Olaf’s Church and Gelato ladies), and wait for Tram 1. Drive for 6 stops and get off at Kadriorg.

Toompea hill and places to visit

Toompea Hill has always occupied a special place in the conscience of Tallinn townsfolk and it is from here that the city has traditionally been ruled – from the first wooden fort constructed in the 9th Century to today’s incarnation of Toompea Castle, which houses the Estonian Parliament. Definitely worth a visit.

 

On the Lossi Plats (Castle Square) stands the impressive Alexander Nevsky’s Cathedral. Constructed in 1900 by the Russians, in imitation of St. Basil’s in Moscow, the project was a crude attempt to stamp Russian identity on the city and to suppress Estonian national spirit. Whatever its political meaning however, its aesthetics are beyond reproach.

Kiriku Plats (Dome Square) and the Finnish Embassy

Here, you will find the magnificent Gothic church of Toomkirik. This ‘Dome Church’ miraculously survived a 17th Century fire that ravaged the rest of Toompea and stands as fine example of an Estonian Lutheran church, complete with a floor paved with tombstones.

 

Before you think about heading back down to the Lower Old Town, one essential thing remains to be done – and that’s take advantage of the superb views on offer from Toompea’s lofty vantage point.

The Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms are a highlight of the Upper Old Town offer a spectacular view of the city, especially magical at sunset, but also awe-inducing at night time.

 

Kohtuatsa

Provides excellent views over the red roofs and towering spires of the Old Town as well as of the gleaming highrise buildings in the new part of the city. In the background is the Gulf of Finland, the port and the Pirita district.

Unforgettable views are guaranteed all year round, whatever the weather.

 

Patkulin

From Patkuli viewpoint you can have a magnificient view over the old town of Tallinn, the Baltic Sea and the harbour.

You can also spot the biggest train station in Estonia – Balti Jaam. Also TV tower and Song Festival Grounds can be spotted from here.

This is the second most well-known viewpoint in Toompea and is a little bit less crowded than Kohtuotsa viewpoint.

Luxury
